Futuristic Agents of Maniacles: Lore

TheAdept

One Thousand Club
At long last this is the official lore thread for the unnatural universe. First post coming shortly.

Lets start with the basics.

Magic

All around us and beyond are untapped energies which can be manipulated to the will of any who know how to wield them. Thanks to centuries of religion and accepted norms nearly everywhere, very very few people even know these energies exist. One who can harness them, however, has a world of possibilities open to them. Weather control, impossible strength increase, reanimation of the dead, and regeneration of lost limbs are but only the smallest decimal of what one can do. A normal, average human being can learn to do such things and they are not restricted to only certain very unique individuals like some media portrays. That being said it is a slow, difficult process, likely taught by a mage, and what manipulated magic energy is casted as naturally depends on the individual. If a person is immediately more natural to enhancing their own strength, for example, they will need a great deal of study, practice, and more practice to learn to heal wounds. While any human can use magic, only the smallest handful of vampires on the planet are able to. Few know why magical energies exist and fewer are willing to share.

Vampires

Disease or curse? Nobody truly knows.
Plenty of media from books to video games have portrayals of blood sucking monsters that look like men. In many cases this stereotype is eerily close to the truth but there are a host of misconceptions. No faith or religious artifact can ward away a real vampire. In fact many pose as clergy to lure in their prey. The mighty sun won't dissolve them...only sting a little (they are weaker in sunlight.) Luckily for those who jump at our own shadows, a vampire is a human. They are humans who have a thirst for blood, immortality, and physical capabilities that will put any Olympic athlete to shame, but still human. In other words, they still feel things like sorrow, remorse, regret. Strong as the thirst can be, the will of a vampire may be even stronger...or maybe just their addictions. Yes, many vampires will take up a frowned upon habit to ward off their urges. Some drink to incredible excess, others abuse drugs, others have unique ways of handling this. Still, many simply succumb to their urges after a while. In hidden places all over the world are "families" of vampires who hunt in packs and feast on the innocent...and not so innocent. They don't care. Blood is blood. But this doesn't prove all vampires are pure evil, as the majority of those who hunt vampires, are vampires themselves.

Maniacles Corporation

Once known only as an obscure pharmaceuticals company grew into a nationwide corporation throughout the United States and even many parts of Europe, South America and the Middle East. While they are recorded as having been founded in 2008 as a pharmacy on a Los Angeles street corner, evidence has surfaced of them existing as far back as the pioneer days. While they are known for their mercenaries decked out in power armor and their impossibly amazing medicine, their main focus is scientific advancement. This likely has to do with their association with the supernatural world including the vampires, magic practitioners, and other aspects of the world hidden from the common person. Their services were rarely called upon by the US (and other) government(s) up until the Pests arrived. They are another topic for another entry. They are credited with keeping the Pest infestations under relative control from 2085 until they solved the Pest problem in 2112. In the chaos, they managed to rise to a level of power and authority rivaling the US government and even other governments in their respective nations.

Pests

Nobody knows exactly where they originated. One day in 2081 things were going on as usual, then a week or so later, large spider-like creatures with many eyes and tentacles oozing from their mouths were everywhere. At first they would simply swarm living creatures, particularly humans, and devour the flesh. Then they seemed to evolve. Larvae were seen as well, and if one managed to get under a human's skin it was game over for them, but the fun was just beginning for the Pest. The flesh, bone and meat of the host would twist and distort, creating something which only vaguely resembled what it once was, if at all. The Pests were a global problem (not including mage societies). Pests could be captured and studied, but their innards resembled nothing the scientists had ever encountered, despite their arachnid appearance. Eventually one day a massive broodmother was killed on an island somewhere, and the Pests...stopped moving, then decayed shortly after.
The broodmothers look significantly different than the standard Pest grunt. A broodmother can be the size of a three story building, sometimes even bigger, and crawls on many legs, stalks with many eyes dotting it's body, and hunts with several huge tentacles on various parts of it's body. In addition to its monstrous appearance and obvious physical advantages over it's foes, many broodmothers are also telepathic and able to manipulate the weak willed who come close enough.

ROSE

Maniacles Corporation may be the most successful and well-known company that deals with the supernatural, but that doesn't mean they are the only ones. There are various establishments across the globe that deal with the arcane, the supernatural and the unknown. While Maniacles is focused on scientific advancements and profit, ROSE was built for the specific aim of keeping all the scary monsters of the night in check. Being that they are not as rich and successful as Maniacles, power armor and even laser weaponry is a rare sight among the agents of ROSE. What they lack in the financial and hardware departments they make up for in arcane knowledge. Around 76% of ROSE agents are fluent in magical capabilities, and learning magic at a basic level is required to move up the ladder.
