Walker

"At some point you have to draw the line at whats best for the group vurses what's best for yourself. That's what I had to do back home. Would it have been better for the group of I had stayed there with them to try and fight off those damn mutant coyotes? Yea probably, but I had to do what was best for myself and get away before I was the next one to disappear." Walker said. He sighed and looked around. "I need to hit something again." He said only half joking. "I need to stay away from Roux or she is gonna end up pissing me off far one day." Walker said letting go of Riley's hand.

Lucida looked at the bag hungrily, but shook her head. "I'm sorry, but no thanks. I don't- I mean." She groaned and put her hand on her forehead. "Damn headache. I can't say what I wanna say. I don't trust people. Not you, per say. Just people. What do I know that you didn't lace the rations with cyanide? Not that you'd do that, and maybe you're telling the truth. I just don't wanna risk it." She turned to Roger. "I'll stay for the night, if your leader won't mind. What was his name, Riley?" She put her hand down. "It's an awful long haul back to my humble hut."

Riley
Walker let go of her hand and the doctor thought about what he’d just told her. Could she do that? Do what was best for her and not the group? Riley couldn’t help but feel it was so unfair. There was so much depending on her, how could she afford to be selfish?
“I don’t know if I have that luxury.” She finally said, looking sadly at her hand. “I have to do what’s best for the people back at camp. If it’s between me and them there’s no contest in that.”
Riley stood and offered a hand to Walker. “You don’t have to stay here. She put you in charge of helping us right? Then you can help us better by staying with us.”

Walker

"Yea I reckon you're right" Walker said taking her hand to get up. "Were taking that god damn humvee though, and I don't give two shits what any of them have to say about it." They walked back down of the roof and Walker paused. "Let me pack some stuff real quick and I'll be out." He then went to his quarters and started packing what little possession he had. Couple pairs of jeans, a few shirts. He packed all of his welding equipment into a bag. He then strapped his new M16 to the side of a backpack, and his shotgun to the other size. Finally he grabbed up all the ammunition in his room, and a few hideout mason jars of moon shine. Walker then made his way out to the humvee and threw his stuff in the back seat. "Ready to go?" He asked Riley.

Wyatt let out a low whistle while giving the door Walker broke the side eyes. "I hope that's not my job to fix. Belligerent fucker. I'll have a talk with him." Wyatt moved carefully through the now ravaged door, looking for Walker, and presumably, Riley. Strange that his room seemed to be almost empty. He managed to make it halfway to where the Humvees were parked, where he thought about what those crazy fuckers were doing, and broke into a run. "Walker! Where the hell are you going in such a hurry? Talk to me, what's the plan?" Desperately trying to see if it was possible to keep the big Texan from defecting, he lead Walker a little closer to the Costco, putting some distance between him and the Humvee.

"Roux put me in charge of helping them, so that's what im going to do" Walker said crossing his arms. "Plus I need some spaces between her and myself, or else that doorway won't be the last thing getting hit." Walker stopped walking so as not to get any further from Riley and the humvee. "I ain't puttin' up with that bully horse shit. Never have, never will. Cause one day she is gonna run into a bigger bully, who isn't gonna take her shit, and I promise that won't end well. It never fails."

"That's fine, just remember whether or not you can stay depends on what Riley, or Viv think" said Roger. Escorting them back to the bridge. Muffin chuffed, and panted as they went in her normal vocal fashion. He wasn't really worried about them, Muffin wouldn't be comfortable around them so fast if she smelled guns on them. And if they tried to pull anything then it would be two on two. And that was only if you counted Muffin as one person. Damn fat bear weighed as much as two grown men anyway.

  • Damien spoke to the girl in an attempt to erase her suspicion of him poisoning the food. "Well, they are MREs. They are sealed and packed tight, it is in fresh condition when you open one. Also, why would I poison my only source of food? I just happened to cross paths with you two." He continued. "Oh well, if you don't want to accept my generous offer, it's okay." He stood up and followed the boy. While walking, he realized that they haven't exchanged names yet. "What are your names?" He said to the two.

"Fair enough, there is always a bigger fish. I get that. But understand the price of failure for her was to never have this lifesaving antivenom made in the first place. Maybe that was over the top, sure. But goddamnit Walker, I don't think anyone alive today can really complain about some Machiavellian principles here. Good cause or not, you said it yourself earlier. Nobody works for free. Keep them safe, especially her. Shes valuable. To everyone." Cross slapped Walker on the shoulder and walked back inside.

Walker

Walker walked back to the vehicle and sat down in the driver's seat. He glanced over at Riley before he started driving. Once they were back at the bridge a tad bit later, Walker got out and opened up the back hatch, examining stache of weapon crates and ammo. "Where in the world do you want to keep all this?" He asked Riley.

"Name's Lucida. Come from a town not too far from Vegas, right on the outskirts." She looked at Damien apologetically. "Sorry if I made you offended, but you have to understand where I'm coming from with the whole food thing. People typically have ulterior motives concerning generosity nowadays. Hell, they always have, but-" She sighed. "Now, more than ever."

"Name's Roger. Used to work out in the countryside. Wildlife center. Now most of those animals are huge killing machines, so I moved down here. She's Muffin" said Roger. Pointing at the bear who perked up when she heard her name. Now he looked down at Lucida. "There are times in life when you have to take chances on people. You wanna talk about nowadays. You stand a better chance of survival in a group for survival. That's nature. The more pairs of eyes and hands you've got the better your chances of living. Sure I got away with being on my own for a few months but I was usually riding around on a grizzly so you could say I cheated a bit. Not that I'm trying to talk you into eating or staying. Just a few things I picked up. But then again when I got back stabbed the 700 pounds of bear came in handy".

  • Damien nodded as the two introduced themselves. He introduced himself to them first, but they gave a little background on how they ended up here. He decided to re-introduce himself again. "Allow me to re-introduce myself. I'm Damien, a former military radio operator. Lived on the base, until the bombs fell. I escaped that place because my life was just a tool for the military. So, I tried to live a normal life after I escaped. Then, the bombs fell. Came back to the base, everyone died, including my father. Tried to salvage the tools that survived." He continued. "After that, I started to make a map as I traveled aimlessly, collecting for supplies, taking out people that poses a threat to me. I've been doing that for... God knows how long."

"Anyway, is the place you were talking about close from here?" He asked Roger.

Riley
She looked with pursed lips at the items Walker had mentioned, wondering where in the world they would put them. It was fair to say she hadn't thought that far ahead, as inviting him to stay was a spur of the moment thing. "If you want to keep them by my desk you can, I'll be able to keep an eye on your things for you there. Other than that I suppose you can just pick a corner to make a space for yourself in." It wasn't much of an answer but it was all the woman had after such a hectic start to the day.
"I'm going to head there now, check on Viv and you know, treat this burn."

Walker

"I meant all the weapon crates but I reckon I can come up with something." Walker said looking around. A corner didn't sound all too comfortable but he figured he could craft up something a little better. He looked up at the bridge. He judged it to be about 30 feet high. If he could figure out how to get up there along with some supplies it would be a good lookout post, and provide him with some privacy away from everyone. He saw an exit ramp a couple hundred yards up the road, a bit to walk but it was better than trying to climb. He walked to the ramp and followed it back up onto the highway. There were enough broken cars to prevent anyone driving up so that was a plus in his mind. He walked along until he got back to where the bridge had collapsed. He looked over the edge and was able to see most everyone, even a few new faces introducing themselves to each other. "This spot will do" Walker said to himself. He had to push a could cars out of the way to get proper spaces, but it was only a couple more feet he needed. He grabbed some rope out of his bag and searched for an anchor point. He found a pickup truck and tied the rope to the rear axle of the truck. He then threw the other end of the rope over the side of the bridge with just a few extra feet touching the ground below. He put on his pair of gloves and took hold of the rope to try and repel down. "It can't be that hard can it?" He thought to himself. He climbed over the side of the bridge and "fast roped" down. Not able to control the speed he hit the ground a little too fast and fell flat on his ass. Nothing was injured though; other than his pride. "It'll take some practice" he muttered to himself as he got up. He eventually gathered up all his materials and managed to haul them up to the top of the bridge using the rope. He built up a nice little hut and connected it to the backside of a delivery truck that was up there. All he was missing was a bed. He roped back down, this time with more success and started searching nearby buildings. He eventually found a residential apartment building and found a bed frame and matress. It took a little more searching but he also found a couple of half decent pillows. By the time he got everything set up in his hut-van the sun was starting to set. "Just in time" he said to himself.

Riley and Viv
Once Riley found herself back in her makeshift office she smiled at Viv, putting on a cheery face. She said nothing for a few moments, merely pulling out supplies to treat the minor burn on her hand.
"Well?" The older woman spoke up finally, raising an eyebrow as she sat clutching her own injured arm. "How did it go?"
"Went fine, they just wanted a share of antivenom and some of the fresh food we grow in exchange for supplies. Kind of a no-brainer, honestly." Riley forced her lips into smiling still, not letting onto the fact that she had just been threatened. Of course when Viv motioned, using the hand of her uninjured arm, to the burn on Riley's hand she tried to laugh it off. "Ah, just an accident. Someone was smoking a cigar and dropped some ash on me by mistake. You know how it goes."
"I get the feeling you're lying about how well this went, so I'm assuming it could have gone better. Fair enough?" Riley wasn't faking a smile anymore when Viv said that, and instead let out a sigh. "If you think it's a fair deal though then I'll take it, so long as they don't try to rob us blind. Guessing they sent someone to keep an eye on us, heard the humvee come back."
"No, not like that. I invited him here, had a bit of an argument with his boss. Anyway, I'm going to go check on Roger." And with that Riley left Viv alone again to sit in her chair like a kid in timeout.

It was when she checked on Roger that she saw a few new faces with him. "Anything happen while I was gone? I see some new faces here." She stuck a hand out at the two newcomers, offering a handshake to whoever would take it. "I'm Riley Scott. I'm a doctor here."

Roger nodded. "Well not much. These two showed up, but I don't think they want to cause problems" said Roger. "How'd your deal go. Favorable I hope". Muffin looked up. The girl human was back. She smelled weird. The bear made a grunoting noise, at Riley. Not really getting up.

'No doubt about it; it's hot as hell and getting worse'. Rachel remarked to herself as she wiped the clinging sweat from her brow, though this was hard to do properly with the shifting motion of the pick-up truck as it occasionally shuddered along what remained of the highway. Looking out from the front passenger window and gazing out into the never-ending desert; Rachel rubbed her head against the glass in a attempt to divert her attention from the searing heat. The scratching noise brought over her Husband's attention who glanced across from staring out into the nothing-ness ahead of them and tried to get a insight into what was wrong.

"Do you want to take a break? i'll try to find us somewhere nice to relax.." Yegor's thick Ukrainian accent struggled with pronouncing certain words but Rachel got the gist of what he was saying. Pulling herself off the window and slowly twisted her neck round to glance at Yegor, the two looked at one another for a few moments before Yegor looked back at the road ahead of them and spotted something in the distance. Squinting his eyes and leaning forward slightly, he could pick out some sort of compound near a destroyed wooden village. Rather than replying to his initial question, Rachel peered out as well and asked;

"What is it? What do you see?"

"Some sort of... military base.. and to the right is a small town.." Yegor leaned over and pointed towards what he could see with his spare hand as he began to bring the pick-up truck to a slow pace of about 30kp/h. Wouldn't be wise to stroll into a place that he had no knowledge of. Staring out and pondering in his head, he didn't even notice Rachel reaching into his coat pocket and retrieving a pair of binos. Bringing it up to her eyes, she managed to get a better view of the so called military base, it wasn't big; a few buildings surrounded by what was left of a barbed wire fence. Nothing too elaborate. Something else did catch her eye though; a pair of bodies just outside of the main gate. She mentioned it to Yegor who simply nodded and decided that heading out on foot would be a better idea than waltzing in with a loud pick-up truck to wake-up all the neighbours. Using his foot to wedge the driver's door open, Yegor reached back behind him and grabbed his trusty AKS-74. Rachel's face turned a little white as she watched Yegor retrieve a magazine from the center console of the truck and locked it into the gun. Looking across, he noticed his wife's distress and tried to comfort her by stroking her cheek whilst trying to win her over with words.

"I'll be careful, just going to make sure that the area is safe okay?.." Yegor gestured to a large gym bag stashed in the back of the pick-up truck. "Stay here and keep a eye out for me." Not saying anything else, Yegor leaned over and placed a kiss upon his Wife's lips before stepping out of the truck and slowly made his way down the dilapidated high-way road. Nodding to herself, Rachel stepped out of the truck as well and headed towards the boot where there were several boxes, backpacks and storage crates hidden under a blue tarp. Unhooking a few bungee cords, Rachel shifted the tarp to one side as she got her hands on the large gym bag that Yegor pointed out earlier; unzipping the sides and peeling back the top cover; she blinked for a few moments whilst she gazed at the weapon hidden within. Rachel carefully reached in and pulled the Remington Model 700 sniper rifle from the bag, she looked at it in surprise before shifting her view back at Yegor; who was now roughly 300 meters from the truck and about half-way to the military base. 'What the hell is he planning? One moment he's wanting to find a place to rest, the next he wants me to cover him... with this!?' She held the rifle as though it were diseased and returned to the front cab of the truck, using the steps to the passenger seat as a foot-hold, Rachel postioned herself against the top of the door frame, using the door itself as a gun-rest as she hesitantly looked through the scope and peered around the landscape. Sighing slightly, she brought her head up from the scope and watched her Husband as he got further and further away.

Yegor looked back occasionally as he walked and smiled to himself as he watched Rachel retrieve the rifle from the back of the truck and set herself up on the door frame. He was proud that she was getting into the swing of things. If this was a few years back, Rachel would have out-right refused to pick up a gun and would've left it all up to Yegor, not that he minded at first; inexperienced shooters normally were the cause of 'accidents'. Though considering that the end of the world had made things that much more dangerous, he learned to rely on his Wife alot more now; not that either of them wanted to arm her in the first place. He gave her a short wave before turning back to approach the two bodies by the road leading up to the base's gate. Yegor didn't want to take any chances and charged his rifle to seat a round into the chamber; he figured that the loud, clunking noise would've been enough to make someone pretending to be dead to flinch or something. Since neither body moved, he took a step closer and glanced back to the pick-up truck to double-check that Rachel had a clean line of sight to where he was. Leaning down, he poked the first body that he came across; a American soldier in uniform. Taking note of the man's name patch 'M. Johnson' and his rank insignia of lieutenant. Yegor grinned slightly as he reached down with a pocket-knife and removed the silver coloured insignia and quickly pocketed it before patting down the body. Finding nothing of use, he gave the corpse a sharp-shock with the back of his heel to make sure it wasn't getting up any time soon before stepping over the next one. He firstly noted the array of lacerations, bruises and the obvious gunshot wound the head. Using the barrel of his AKS-74; Yegor gently pushed the body's worn out woodland coat open and searched through the man's satchel bag. He blinked to himself as he found a pistol, several medical components and a few cans of food. 'Food but no water? Poor choice'. Yegor looked through the man's pocket but didn't find anything worth taking and decided that each body had been previously looted but not thoroughly enough apparently. Sighing to himself, he took a moment to drag both bodies from the road and kicked up some sand to at least cover parts of the corpses.

Yegor looked back at the pick-up truck and gestured with a hand to signal for Rachel to come over. She nodded, dropped down into the cabin and shuffled herself across to the driver's seat where she slowly drove forwards whilst she watched Yegor enter the base. Moving quickly from corner to corner; Yegor's military training kicked in as he systematically searched the few buildings within the compound. As he did so; he noted that the armoury had been already looted and the majority of what had been left behind was either too damaged or too large to be worth the effort of salvaging. Still, it granted shade from the bearing sun and didn't smell all that bad so Yegor nodded to himself with content as Rachel brought the truck into the compound's main yard. Setting out from what looked to be a garage of sorts; he guided Rachel in to a parking spot and smiled at her smugly as she stepped out to meet up with him.

"It's a nice place, it would be worth setting up here for a few days don't you think?" Yegor's pride with the new home made his face glow like the arrogant prick that he was sometimes. Rachel dodged the ray of smugness and made a inquiry which wiped the smirk from his face.

"What about the bodies, don't you think it's dangerous here? What if the people that did that came back?" Rachel crossed her arms and the two exchanged looks as Yegor paused to look around.

"They already took most of the gear here, the bodies were already starting to decompose so if the people that killed them left a long time ago.. I doubt they'll return anytime soon.. but.." Rachel's stoic face made Yegor reconsider the situation, after all; he knew deep down that her instincts had saved not only their lives on many occasions but also several others back in Ukraine. It had been a long time since he thought about the Clinic in his hometown of Rozdil. How they met and how he felt guilty for leaving his war-torn country behind to start a new life. He shook his head as he was brought back into reality by Rachel clearing her throat.

"Okay, I will double check the fences; make some repairs okay?.. Now, i'll leave it up to you to find somewhere nice for us to rest." Yegor nodded to her and patted Rachel on the shoulder as he left the garage to do what he could to the fence; it wasn't in the best shape but nothing that some extra cable couldn't fix. Searching around through tool-boxes and storage sheds; Yegor began work to reinforce what little barbed wire fencing was left and reconstruct any major gaps using parts that he found all over the compound. Meanwhile Rachel had been using the time to find a cool spot to relax for a little whilst she took stock of the situation. It wasn't that bad of a building that they decided to call home for the next few weeks. Sure, it stuck out like a sore thumb but at least the doors and windows were adequately well maintained. She smiled a little as she found a set of keys in one of the main office which certainly helped keeping areas locked up and secured whilst she then returned to the pick-up truck and began to shift the various crates, bags and guns lying around.

All in all, it seemed that Yegor's plan of gun-dealing was going to earn them both alot of chips and now with a secure place to set up shop; it certainly took alot of weight off both their minds.
