People take these sticks with strings on them called bows. Then with the other hand they take a stick with a pointy end with feathers at the end. And then they use the elastic potential of the string to apply a force to the arrow that sends it flying to a wooden object called a target.

You may be better off just having your character do the archery. The combat tournament doesn't really seem to suit him, and it means we can do both at once.
