Personality: Ophelia is a quiet young woman, withdrawn person who prefers to stay to herself. Her voice is hardly raised to shout and her temperament is cool, perhaps a little dull in the eyes of others. Her emotional responses are oftentimes lacking. People have teased her in the past for this. They compare her to the dead that she sees, calling her frigid and lifeless. Ophelia doesn’t take offense to it though and even goes as far as to correct them, telling them that the dead are not always frigid and even as spirits they are more lively than some of the living in a dull tone. Her use of blunt honesty leaves others with a bad taste in their mouth. Sometimes, perhaps too often, Ophelia forgets to take other’s feelings into account before saying something. Especially when people ask her opinion on something, she does not hold back. Combined, these traits leave people to believe that she is cold, callous even. That she’s this unshakable thing with little to no feelings. The truth is that she has difficulty expressing herself, though she does try. She also has a little difficult time reading others so being direct is the best way to deal with her.

Ophelia is cautious of others. Being raised in a family that valued and heavily guarded their way of life means that she behaves in the same way. Ophelia is mysterious and doesn’t go out of her way to share things about herself. It doesn’t help that she’s socially awkward as she’s mostly dealt with family for the majority of her life. Though there is a curious side to her due to this. Having spent much of her life sheltered Ophelia does express interest in learning about the world around her. There’s a part of her that wants to be able to interact with others normally, to learn how to behave like someone her age should. Though there are too many things holding her back currently.

There’s a mental strength to Ophelia that is admirable. Having dealt with spirits throughout her life, some of those having been less than nice, has left her with the ability to endure things that would shake others or upset them at least. Ophelia has the mental endurance that helps with concentrating and dealing with stressful situations.

Lineage: Her family history dates back to the Old World, when the first matriarch of the line was transported from the West Indies to Salem, Massachusetts during the 1600s. She was given the name Mary after being bought by her master at the age of 20 years old. A life of hardships was something that she’d grown used to quickly, she’d adapted and survived. In order to hold on to her roots, Mary would practice her religion in the head of night, where she believed to be safe. Mary was caught and accused of witchcraft, she denied it, saying that the devil was no friend of hers, that she had not signed her name in his book. Instead, she lived among the true devil, tended to his children, his crops, and his needs.

As Mary was taken away and thrown in jail to await her trail, she uttered something in her native language, many say a curse was placed upon those who wronged her. Misfortune came to them swiftly while Mary herself vanished, as if she was never there to begin with.

Ophelia’s family knows the truth of Mary and how she appeared many years later, looking as young as ever. She had gone on to marry a free man of color by the name of Joseph’s Delaven and they started a family. The Delavens are a family shrouded in mystery, as they are secretive about their practice and within good reason. The Delavens tend to stick to themselves though they are known for their prowess in their craft.

Skills: Her most powerful skill is by far her ability to see and communicate with the dead. They appear to her as if they are living and they can offer her wisdom, guidance, glimpses of the past, and dangers to come. Ophelia is also skilled in the area of rootwork, using simple things as dirt to perform spells and create charms. She knows a lot of plants and their magical properties as well.

Magic type: Technically Jamie is a Shintoist, who tend to focus on art, healing, therapy, divination or the occult. He wants to also learn more about Paganism.
Lineage: Jamie’s branch of the Hinode family tree, who have strong Onmyōdō magic (natural science, astronomy, almanac, divination and magic) specifically divination, had to flee from their small Japanese village back in the early 1900s after it was discovered that their magic actually worked. Afraid for their lives they relocated to America. They moved around a little but eventually settled on Salem, Massachusetts as it was a known hotspot for magic. Ever since then the Hinode family has tried to keep their magic a secret. They live away from people and keep within magical circles, never wanting to interact with non-magical beings again.
It’s rumored that Jamie’s family are related to Inari Okami, the spirit of prosperity, rice, tea, and protector of foxes but this is just a rumor. Despite this, the family's familiars are cats and foxes which is a weird coincidence. It is said all children of a Hinode will have strong magic to the point that a lot of practice and training will have to be done to ensure it is well rounded and directable.
Skills: He wishes to be a diverse sorcerer and so he keeps his skills spread out. Of course, being a shintoist, he is connected to the many spirits in the world and can predict what will happen through what they present to him, though this is vague and can be inaccurate. He has weak mediumship however he dislikes it and doesn’t want to associate with mediumship. He can perform many rituals and dances related to Shintoism and is knowledgeable of the entire practice.
Familiar: A ginger cat by the name of Tarot. He is a friendly, chubby cat who likes climbing and chasing mice.
Wand: He doesn’t use a wand in the sense of conjuring magic but does own many belongings related to rituals like goheis which are used for purification.

Jamie is a natural born leader and fiercely independent. He has a thirst for knowledge and wishes to learn more about his favorite interests. He is unafraid to throw himself into new things and loves exploring. Being the best is his main goal but by doing so he has caused a lot of damage to his own mental state and has a lot of fears based on how others may see him. He often doesn’t understand how to empathise with people and says the wrong thing without meaning to. He is still trying to be the best leader he can. His loyalty knows no bounds however and he will fight for his friends if it’s the last thing he does. He is a peacekeeper and dislikes violence however he can be quite sly and is known for the odd harmless prank or deceiving teachers. Being the student voice he can get away with things because he’s not seen as the person causing trouble, his foxy side comes out rarely but it’s fun when it does happen. Jamie also can have quite the temper when things don’t go his way. It’s not a pretty site when Jamie is angry. Perhaps his most hidden trait however is his kindness. He doesn’t show it too often but he will drop everything for the right person. If he does that, he will be your buddy or boyfriend forever.

[HISTORY]
Background: Jamie was an only child and grew up in Salem as a regular kid. He hung out with friends, did well in conventional schooling and was a responsible person. His parents for the longest time tried to keep their son away from magic. They didn’t want him to have to take on the burdens of being a Hinode. However when he was 8 years old he participated in mediumship with some family and friends and presented his magic for the first time and had a seizure because of it. His parents believed it was the sign of strong magic and they knew that their son needed to learn how to control his magic from an early age. From then on he lived and breathed Shintoism. Everyday after school he would come home and spend his time studying the rituals, divination and history of Shinto. He eventually became so close to these rituals, to the spirits that he began to predict things. He was learning divination without even trying. He knew when it was going to rain, when the flowers would be in bloom, when earthquakes would occur. His magic was growing as he aged and his family knew that there was only one thing they could do for him after teaching him all they knew and that was to enroll him into the school they went to which was the Academy of the Silenced. Maybe they could teach him more advanced forms of magic and different kinds of divination.

Magic type: A form of Paganism and Zoroastrian belief consistent with Persian Magi. Zareen holds a polytheists and dualistic belief system with the worship of 12 deities and a biform of evil and good. Her magic tends to focus on divination through the stars, curses, glamours and lethal state altering potions. Zareen can expand her skills through study.
Lineage: Zareen’s lineage dates back to 5BC, her blood line originated from a powerful tribe of Magi practitioners. Zareen is one of the last of her kind. Her mother died during childbirth and her father’s whereabouts is unknown, he left before she was born. Zareen later found out that he had been killed trying to cross the border into Armenia.

Familiar: Falcon named Zana. Zana came to Zareen a month before her 12th birthday. Zareen struggled to rid herself of the bird and it wasn't until she was finally taught about her linage that she understood what Zana's presence meant.

Vices: Zareen can be incredibly selfish and often acts with her self-interest and self-preservation at heart. Her constant distrust for others and inability to commit is obvious in her toxic self-handicapping behaviours shown in all her failed intimate relationships and friendships. Sadly, Zareen tends to build walls around herself and all her relationships are based on personal gains.
Virtues: Zareen is incredibly resourceful and adaptable. Through her three years of travelling the world she learnt many survivalist skills. Her disposition is jovial and cheeky she possess the unique ability to talk her way out of any circumstance. Zareen is intelligent, incredibly cunning and possess the ability to prognosticate, all attributes she uses to guide her in her decision making. Her loyalty is to herself and to who can benefit her at the time. Zareen knows everything about everyone at the Academy of the Silenced. HISTORY ​
Background: Zareen is an orphan who rarely felt love and validation. She spent most of her childhood learning off a wise woman from her nomadic tribe. The women taught her about potions, herbs, survival skills and divination. On her 12th birthday the wise women gave Zareen her dead mother’s old family spell books and educated her about her Magi lineage. From that moment Zareen felt like she had a purpose. She dedicated her time to honing her craft. A few days before Zareen’s 15th birthday the wise women passed away.
Zareen’s growing power and her self-preservation approach to life left the other tribe members scared and wary. By age 15 and half Zareen was exiled from the tribe. Zareen spent months walking through the Iranian desert seeking out other Magi like her with no success. One night when she looked up at the stars for guidance she divined that she would find others similar to her in a land across the sea. The next day she began her trek to the Persian Gulf. On her arrival to the port she stealthily stowed away on a merchant vessel to an unknown land.
Zareen spent the next three years learning new skills, honing her craft and searching the world for her place. Every night she Divined through the stars moving closer and closer to the Academy of the Silenced. It wasn’t until her quest took her to North America that she begin to feel a sense of hope that she was finally on a clearer path to a place where she could belong.
