Caught in a storm

It was the annual Feast of Ullr. It was primarily a hunting festival so most families were getting ready to participate.
Ofcourse there would be food too. Most took this time in the morning to set up their shops or get ready for the hunt.

At only seven years old Kiersten was already an experienced hunter among her three brothers. Being the only daughter of the chieftain, she was pretty much only interested in the same things as her brothers. Which meant fighting, hunting, and generally more fighting.

"Oi Kiersten. You done sleeping yet?" Her father Ragnar Frydenlund yelled. Kiersten had been busy practicing her axe throwing skills in her own room at the second floor of the house.
"Coming!" She yelled. She picked up her axe by the nightstand and quickly jumped the ladder.
Ragnar was busy eating breakfast. A bit of ham and some bread.
"You should eat. The festival will begin soon. You should hurry and up and meet with your brothers, everyone will be at the forest by midday.

Kiersten took a stroll around the village. She could see people setting up shops, a group of people watching two men duel, and people making their way to the forest, even if it was abit early. She didn't feel like heading there quite yet. Infact she was known to be quite late to everything so it wasn't like people would be surprised to see that she took her time.

Hopefully she could find her brothers, they all tended to wander on their own so she doubted they would all be in the same place.
Ofcourse she expected to encounter the other children around her age, although she didn't really know too many of them very well. She spent most of her time hunting or training with her brothers.

IMG_9953.JPGAsfrid Solvidottir had been going around the outskirts of the village since dawn. Her father had woken her up to go hunting, as per usual, but had ended the hunt early due to the village festival going on later that day. She had never really liked big crowds, preferring the quiet and calm atmosphere of the forest. She did bring down her first deer that day with an arrow to the heart and at only six years old, her dad told her it was quite an accomplishment. She told herself she could and would eventually get as good as her father (and accepted her competence as good enough for her age), good enough to take down boars by the dozens in a full moon's cycle. She was slightly disappointed that it was only a teenaged deer, and not a full grown bull, like the two her dad had brought back for the festival.

After returning after five hours of hunting, Asfrid had helped butcher and dress the meat. She had wanted to continue helping her dad with the preparations, but he just made a slight motion with his head and motioned towards the village. "Go play." He then continued on with his tasks. She knew that was he queue to dismiss herself and pretend to make friends and socialize with the village kids. She honestly didn't feel the need to 'make friends'. She had her dad and Haff (their hunting partner). She was fine with just them.

Huffing out an irritated breath she went out to the outskirts of the village, where the festival would take place, to snoop around and maybe 'confiscate' some treats along the way. She skirted around and took hold of a couple of sweet rolls, and climbed a tree. She settled along it's highest branches, and took a breath and a bite of her pilfered goods. 'These were worth it...'

Aldrnari, much like many of the other children, wasn't exactly in the middle of the hustle and bustle of the festival—actually, no, they were probably closer to the woods than the circled tents. Either way, they shied away from the noise of the festival, biting their lip. All of the commotion was upsetting the hunting birds, which several of the people who paid their parents—clients? Clients—had left them in charge of keeping in top shape for the ensuing hunt.

That wasn't going well, even with the poor child mimicking the cooing and preening of a mother of the same species as well as they could at the time. Tiny, gentle fingers ran through the ruffled feathers, smoothing them back down in a bit of a desperate attempt to keep them at least on the perch.

That didn't really go all that well, being honest. The birds were more interested in taking off blindly than staying. Oh, why hadn't Ragnar let them put a hood on his eagle? She was making most of the ruckus! The only thing keeping her on her perch was the anklet.

Arii's own bird, quite a small Red Kite—Keele—wasn't having a good time, either, but at least she stayed on her perch. They clucked anxiously, quite unfamiliar with the eagle, but attempting to calm it nonetheless. If worse came to worse, they'd have Keele grab a hood from home. She was smart enough... and she liked treats enough for it.

Actually, damn the consequences, this bird needed to be calmed down now, Aldrani decided as the large eagle nearly pulled the perch over and onto another bird.

The trainer wove between the perches and to the one at the back, where Keele was perched and alert, but still, the hood keeping her from panicking and taking off. "Keele!" They commanded, the bird coming to attention as they carefully unstrapped the hood and freed them from the anklet swivel. "Seek." They waved the hood in front of the bird, breathing a quiet sigh as she took off in the direction of their hut. Their father had taught them how to train that one, and they were very grateful for it.

Now, they just had to wait.

And hope that Ragnar's booted eagle didn't cause an incident.

1616449664595.png Rune arose with the sun as the rooster crowed, it was his alarm of sorts when his mother was off doing official duties, and considering a festival was occurring today he wasn't surprised to find a bowl of warm stew and a hunk of bread waiting for him as he got dressed and walked to the dining room, seems she just left. She would be preparing remedies for hunters that got hurt as it happened every year when someone decided it was a good idea to wrestle with a boar or deer to prove their strength. Worst case was when someone was nearly killed by a bear, still Rhun had to appreciate the fact they were so brave.

He sighed as he dipped his bread into the soup and began to munch on it. Even though it had been a few years he still missed his dad dearly, he wished he could bring his father back to his original self more than just a spectral form, but he had to get stronger for that, even though his mom forbade it he would bring him back, he had to. There had to be a way to, even if he had to travel the entire world to do it. By the time he finished daydreaming he had finished his food and was ready to head out and help with the festival. He grabbed his cloak and staff and headed out.

He wasn't a hunter or fighter much like the others, but he was adept with the sling on the end of his staff and could use spirits to help guide the stone to help him hunt small game, so he would at least bring a few things to the table today, but he was far more interested in helping Bragi and learning all of the traditions of the Skald that his father didn't get to teach him due to his untimely demise. However as he made his way to the festival grounds he saw his mother and Bragi were busy talking and he looked over to the prepared food and he stared at the sweet rolls before he noticed a small hand swiping a few of them. He was forbidden from taking any, but he wasn't about to pass up the chance to take from a thief. He silently followed Asfrid and watched as she climbed the tree. "Hey, can I have one?"

Asfrid had been calmly sitting on what she dubbed her tree, munching away on some of her hard earned sweet rolls. She had taken four, for them to last all the way to the beginning of the festival, and so the she wouldn't have to interact with anyone before her dad came to collect her. She truly only wanted some of that boar dad had been able to take down single handedly this morning. It looked so juicy....

She had started to drool some, thinking of the honeyed boar meat her dad was certainly preparing for them at home, when she heard a voice speaking from the ground of her tree. Her face scrunched up in confusion. 'I'm suppose to be the only one that knows this spot...who the hecks?" Asfrid then took a peak down from her perch and saw the local healers boy there. She had been fixed up by his mom a couple of times. The most recent when she had gotten a little too close to a bear cave entrance and got stung by the near by bee hive when she startled them.

She squinted at the boy, and thought about it. 'I should be nice....he might be the healer in the future....but not to nice....dad would be proud of me.' She was grinning internally at her turn of good will, but her face was still scrunched up while looking at the boy. "........sure.." She had four anyways. She threw a sweet roll down towards the boy, and took a bite of her own.

1616639657596.png Rhun smiled at Asfrid as he caught the sweet roll carefully to not get his hands sticky and leave evidence to get scolded over. He nibbled at the sweet roll as he looked around the hiding spot. "Make sure to avoid Bragi or my mom if your hands are sticky from sweet rolls, they'll give you a scolding." He warned her since she was nice enough to give him one of her spoils of thievery as he sat down under the tree. He wasn't likely to stay long since he didn't know her overly well since she was often gone from the village and he wanted to join Bragi soon.

"You going to hunt with others or on your own when midday comes?" He asked as he continued to slowly enjoy the treat. He himself was likely going to hunt small game alone, though he would help others against large game if they asked. He looked up to see the sun was getting ever closer to midday so he discreetly called up the spirits of small birds to head out into the forest to look for small game, from there he could catch the creatures at their den where he could catch a few. Still it was always more fun when there were more people, so he wold gladly join any groups or anyone who would to take him.

"You're Asfrid right? You go off with Moldof for a long time so we don't see you much in the village." Rhun inquires somewhat rhetorically, as he knew who she was but her name he wasn't sure on. "It must be nice having a direwolf as a partner, mom wouldn't let me get a pet." He lamented, his mother meant well but was always so strict when it came to things at home. "I'm Rhun by the way." He declared with a polite smile.

At one small stand, filled with various forest varieties of herbs, ointments and other medicines, was sitting very bored and unhappy girl. It was Ruth, wierd kid who used to appear very rarely in the village. Only few people was knowing that she lives outside in nearby forest, along with her grandmother, Aila. Old lady was little known but good herbalist. Aila was raising girl from her early childhood, hoping that one day she will replace her. Like her grandmother, Ruth also wasn’t a famous personage in the village. And although she appeared here much more often than her tutoress, girl rarely talked to anyone and she didn’t play at all with the other children.

Today, because of festival, she was standing there, trying to sell anything. But none was interested in her products. Good hour passed since she came here. Nothing has changed regarding the sale. Ruth with anger could only sitting near plants and being bored.

Suddenly, she got an idea. A little more excited, teen looked from her stand in search of a "new client". Ruth’s attention was caught by a certain blonde-haired girl who was walking near her. The brown-haired girl pursed her lips in stress.
Just don’t look at her face... She thought to cheer up her-self and corrected fringe to cover the scar on her forehead.

Then young herbalist called out to stranger; “Hey you! Blue-eyes blonde!” Girl turned to her. For a moment, Ruth doubted, but quickly overcame her fear. “Exactly, you! Come here” A little surprised stranger approached her. It looked like she was the same age as her. “Did you ever heard about Eir’s shining salve?” Ruth said with a hint of mystery in her voice.

Thorvid

The festival was today? It seemed like they had just had this festival not to long ago, oh well! Thorvid sat up in his bed an glanced around his room a moment, almost dazed as he heard his father calling him. Heaving a heavy sigh, young Thorvid pulled himself from the bed an threw on some of his hunting clothes. Plain black pants with heavy black boots and a simple white shirt. Exiting his room he made his way into the common area of their home. Ingolf, his father stood tall and proud. Dark brown locks fell past his shoulders and a large bushy beard concealed much of his face, With bright blue eyes Ingolf watched his only son grasp his dagger and look up at him "That's my boy, ready for the hunt?" Thorvid nodded an smiled excitedly, Thorvid was always trying to impress his father, Ingolf was a family man and just about anything his children did made him proud. Valkyrie was still to young to participate in the hunt but Ingolf made sure to bring her back a souvenir from the forest, either a type of stone or an antler if he could find one dull enough that she wouldn't poke an eye out.

Making their way outside, the sun beat down on Thorvid's skin an he smiled calmly. Ingolf stomped his way outside as well and headed in the direction of where everyone was helping to set up. Glancing down to his son he raised an eye brow before gesturing to the table with food "Grab a snack before anyone see's" A small chuckle erupted from the large man before he waved his hand "Go play until you hear the horn to signal the final preparations for hunt" Thorvid nodded before turning to move toward the table, grasping a sweet roll or two and a chicken leg he then scampered off to be secluded. Making his way toward the starting line for the hunt he then veered off into the tree's to seat himself next to a rather large tree, munching quietly on his food he glanced upward toward the sky, hopefully he and his father would bring back something worthy to the village. Thorvid wasn't always so quiet and reserved, he did like to chat but more so with the grown ups than the other children of the village, he found some of them rather odd but he wouldn't speak of such things out loud. Thorvid did however catch a glimpse of Kiersten and it made him smile a little, he though she was pretty and admired her strength and determination.

Hana Petrova
She/Her - 13
Hana's cousins were whooping and hollering about the festivities, playing swords with sticks on the ground and being menaces in the crowd, which distracted her aunt long enough for Hana to slip away. She peeked around the stalls, stomach rumbling quietly but she ignored that in favor of looking for other children. Her aunt refused to let her mingle with the other kids in the village and she hadn't been very social before her parents died. Now she was looking forward to meeting other kids her age. Who knows, she might even make a new friend!

Dodging past adults, she spotted a pale blonde girl standing by herself and made her way over to her. ( SomebodyElse SomebodyElse ) "Hi um, are you an orphan too?" She stumbled and then immediately clapped her hands over her mouth. You don't just say that to someone, Hana you idiot. "Oh I'm so sorry, I meant to ask for your name!"

circle-cropped.pngHalfdan Aldersson

Rising from his bed Halfdan woke in his lonely longhouse, one of the many things left his parents left behind. The longhouse was smaller than most, but it was stock full of oddities from foreign lands, from trinkets to coins and even clothing they were all placed and stacked up around with no thought of style or grace, the place was a mess, to say the least. Rolling out of bed the boy snatched his saex from a nearby table and went over to a nearby rack which was adorned by an assortment of dried meat and fish. Slicing off a small piece of meat and nibbling on it, satisfied with the taste he then sliced off a bigger piece he then wrapped it in a piece of cloth for later.

With some of his morning routines done Halfdan made exited his house, though not before grabbing a 3 pronged fishing spear on his way out in hopes of catching something for lunch. Though once he noticed the hustle and bustle the realization of the festival finally hit him. With a defeated sigh he leaned the spear right next to his front door, guess a fishy lunch wasn't on the menu for today. Still, Halfdan made his way through the village, passing all of the stalls and stands not paying much attention to them. Approaching the starting Halfdan figured he'd probably catch a rabbit and call it a day, he wasn't really a hunter after all but like most Norsemen, he could at least make some basic traps.

Out of the corner of his eye, Halfdan spotted a somewhat familiar face, another kid around his age who was eating under a tree. Thorvid was it? Halfdan was rather familiar with all of the other kids around the village. With nothing better to do, he decided to strike up a conversation to kill time until the hunt was ready. Going around and approaching the tree from behind Halfdan noticed Thorivd's gaze, and upon following it he landed on the chieftain's daughter Kiersten. "So are you just gonna stare at her?" Halfdan said, making his presence clear as well as poking some fun at Thorvid.

Ruth shivered a little from stress and probably a little because of anger. Some other girl just stopped that blonde one. It was probably a little younger than them both, also stranger had short auburn-ginger hair. Wonderful. Another unlucky day. It was unnecessary to break her fear and spoke to that stranger. Kid was still poor anyway. Maybe the blonde hadn't noticed her from the start and had been walking towards the little one?

Ruth huddled helplessly in her seat. Well, maybe she will have something interesting to say, herbalist thought and sighed. She looked at her stand. If this goes on, we will soon switch to a diet. Alia’s granddaughter giggled with a faint hint of sadness in her voice. The only one thing that she could do right now was waiting for what will happen.

Kiersten was moving around in the festival, she could have sworn she heard a voice but then another kid made her way over to her and spoke up. She turned around to see a copper haired child that seemed alittle younger than her.
"I'm Kiersten Frydenlund. No I'm not an orphan, my father is the chieftain of the village." Kiersten said proudly.

The other girl seemed to be alone. At the very least the hunt would be getting setup soon.
"Are you alone, do you perhaps want to join me. I was thinking about seeing around the festival abit before heading the forest to see everyone preparing for the hunt, although that won't be till mid-day."
Perhaps there was something fun to do. There could be some other children around here and there was certain to be some games, events and shops going on. Kiersten for one wanting to see some fights going on. Usually there was people sparring with usually some adults betting on them in a ring during festivals. Kiersten wasn't sure if the other girl was into fighting and hunting as much as she was but even if she was more girly there were still shops everywhere.

A young "boy" was following their father to their shop. Behind Yrsa was bear cub which was already about he size of them. As they reached the forge Yrsa retrieved an apple to feed to bo, their bear companion while their father started setting up. As Njal got the forge a couple people were already showing up to stock up on arrows before the hunt. Since Yrsa had been helping for awhile now they already knew what to do. After they sold the arrows they'd run the money back to their father who'd take care of it from there.
Once things were good and going Njal patted Yrsa on the back. "Boy, why don't you go enjoy the festival with the other kids?"
Yrsa looked up from playing with Bo on the ground. "Sure pa," they responded as they hopped up from the ground. They gave the bear cub a little pat on the head before pointing to a tree in the distance. "Alright Bo! Imma race you there. If you win I'll give you a sweet roll," they declared before taking off. The young bear easily catching up.
Naturally the little bear beat Yrsa to the tree. "Darn, I really thought I could win this time," they said as the tried to catch their breath, "but you won fair and square so a sweet roll it is." With that Yrsa and the bear made their way to one of the stalls so that they could purchase a sweet roll.

In the morning Helga had been awakened by her father. “Are you still sleeping?” He asked with a raised voice.

“No.” She responded half asleep, with her eyes closed. She yawned, opening her eyes and slowly got up. If she recalled it properly, today was the day of the Feast of Ullr. She was not real wild about the idea of socializing with all the kids from the village but didn’t mind being in a crowd. She was also enthusiastic about celebrating as she loved the magical feeling that always accompanied any kind of festivals.

She quickly got dressed and walked to the dining table where breakfast, containing a bowl of soup and some bread, was waiting for her. She began eating, deep in thoughts.

After she had finished, she went out of the house and headed to the forest. The air was cold and fresh. When she arrived in the woods, there were already a bunch of people who were preparing all the needed stuff for the feast. She sat down on a mossy rock standing nearbyand watched their actions with interest.

Time passed and she started to get slightly bored. She decided to look around. While walking, she noticed a girl about her age, maybe a little bit younger, standing next to one of the stalls.

Someone approached to the herbalist's stand. Child looked up to see who had come and then froze. Hard to said if this was because of her happiness that she would be finally able to sell something, or maybe because of her fear and surprise. Girl sat up stiffly staring at the the other with atumn hair. After a while, Ruth asked a little hesitantly; "Do you want to buy something?"

Then, as her grandmother taught her, kid brought some ointments and other medicines closer to the stranger.
There was a slightly awkward silence. Or at least it was embarrassing only for Ruth. Right now she wasn’t in the mood. After the previous situation with “blonde”, several people approached small stall but bought nothing. Ruth was concerned that her herbs would lose interest of another potential costumer again. Finally she took breath and tried to start conversation. Child noticed that it’s easier to sell something when you have contact with other person.

“Eir herself created recipes for them... that's why they are the best around..." She started trying to catch more attention from other girl. Even so, young herbalist felt that she wasn’t doing well at it. Kid looked down, wondering how to rectify the situation.

Talking about the goddess of healing... Her eyes lit up. It would be a pity to miss the idea that she had come up with earlier. Ruth picked up one of the herbs. It was relatively more expensive than the others. "They say that she is able to even bring back life with the help of some wild plants ” as she spoke, girl gently twirled herb in her fingers. “This one is the most effective, as a legend says” Ruth thought again. In her previous plan, child wanted to portray this story. But now herbalist wasn't sure if that was good idea.
