To stay alive you've got to kill your mind.
Bludhaven, 21:23
The silence of night had fallen over Bludhaven, or at least most parts of it. The sky was clear, but a brisky wind was blowing, making old newspapers and tin cans fly through the streets. It was a quiet night and the air was cold, even though the day had been warm and sunny. The asphalt of the small alleys was still warm, which made a contrast to the stormy weather. It didn't look like rain, though. The storm had blown all the clouds away. Up in the skyscrapers, people were sleeping soundly; those who were out on this particularily stormy night, had buisness to do. Some of them were walking home from work, a late shift. Some were heading to pick up some groceries at the 24 hours store. But whoever crossed the path of a particularily strange person didn't make it where they had intended to be. They turned in the middle of their step, their facial expression changed and they started following her. It was a girl, dressed in white sweatpants and a blue sweatjacket, which looked way too big for her. Her face was covered by the hood of the jacket she was wearing and whoever got into hearing distance of her turned to run after the crowd that had formed, spitting insults and hatred. At first, the girl was confused, looking back at the angry mob that was forming behind her. Then, one of them threw something and the girl started to run. The mob followed her, picking up more people on their way. Everyone she raced past seemed to be pulled in, running after her and shouting.
The girl continued running, running like a maniac. Her breaths were leaving her body in hectic puffs, as she took the next turn and stood in front of a huge building.
Left or right? Left or right?
She hesitated, but she didn't have time to think, she didn't have time... Sprinting off to the right side seemed to have been a good decision, as it lead her to the main road. There were even more people, more started following her. Maybe he had been right all along. Maybe she should have been more compliant and listened to him. It was too lat, now and she was too far from home to turn back. Oh how she hated herself for taking that decision, oh how she wanted to go back, now, just to make things right.
Too late, now.
Another horde of people turned and followed her. She hated it here! What had she done to insult them? She didn't look any different than them! Why were they following her?! Slowly panicking, she took a left and landed in a small alley, where a group of people was standing together, discussing things. One of them was holding a gun, the other two were holding a weird package of white powder and money. Something was going on, here, she could feel it. Even though she didn't know what exactly it was, it didn't feel right to her. She turned and wanted to run. Her hands started to tremble when she froze. It was the sound of a gun being loaded. She knew that sound very well... And it didn't make it pleasant for her to be there.
"What'cha doin' here?"
A voice that sounded just as panicked as she was feeling asked her something in a language she didn't understand. But the gun, the gun she knew and it made it impossible for her to think. She turned and ran, followed by the echo of shots, breaking the silence of the nightly city. A moment later, she caught herself contemplating stopping. Maybe this would be over. The pain and the loneliness, maybe this was what she needed to do to pay for what she had done? Was she meant to die here, as a punishment for her mistakes? The crowd that was following her through the streets, that had been following her for quite a while, now, gained again and she didn't have time to think. She ran. Something scraped her shoulder. Pain, a lot of pain. She screamed. The people behind her screamed. It was a mess.
But then the gun stopped shooting and the girl stopped running. Her lungs hurt, she couldn't go on any longer. He had been right, all along. Useless, she was useless! She stood, now, facing the crowd. Her heart was pounding. Why was she always so afraid of everything?!
When the first fist hit her, she felt it. The second and the third one became an ocean of pain. Someone kicked her in the stomach. She went down. This was nothing against that hat on her head. At least this was real pain. They just kept on kicking, more of them came and started fighting each other. Someone shouted something. A voice that sounded like a savior over all those other voices, because it didn't sound angry, it sounded concerned. Another foot hit her face and she saw stars dancing. Then, she passed out.
