Fantasy A Reluctant Coven (OOC Plotting & Chat)

Salutations, Witches.

Thanks so much for your interest. I'm excited to get started! As a quick reminder, I'm looking for partners who:
  • Are eager to collaborate and share their ideas
  • Will communicate when they lose interest or if they'd like to adjust the direction of the RP
  • Are preferably 30+ (subject to change as I'm not sure what the site demographics are, but full disclosure: I am in my thirties)

Before we dive into character creation, I'd like to get your input on the following:
  • Time period/era (what technology is present?)
  • Real or fictional location
  • Type of setting (rural, town, city)
  • Name of the location (dependent on where/when it is, which is why I call it [PLACE] for now)

Next, the magic. Here's what I imagine:
  • Warding is a preventative protection magic. Longer lasting wards require longer lasting spells (think scorch marks or carvings). Temporary wards, used primarily when traveling, are quicker to perform though may require sustained effort (like music or feeding a flame or wearing a token of some kind). I think each House would have its own methods and every witch their personal preferences. This will also allow each of us to create our own systems of magic. They don't have to be different, but I thought it'd be a fun way to distinguish our characters and their Houses.
  • Banishing a rooted wraith (which is what I'm calling a wraith that possesses another living organism, sentient or not) requires multiple witches to perform some kind of syncopated magic (hence the necessity of a coven). I'd love your input on what this might be/look like.
  • Additionally, each witch could have a unique ability.
  • And of course, your witch may have a familiar.

A bit on wraiths:
  • Wraiths are born of strong emotion, so most are primarily of human origin though occasionally an animal death will create one
  • In their nascent state, they are wispy and frail, not unlike smoke
  • After some time (longer for larger organisms), their form becomes more solid though they're still essentially smoke
  • If left alone too long, wraiths can inhabit another living organism (trees, animals, people). They don't have a nefarious purpose; they don't think. But they will kill their hosts if not extracted in time. These deaths always create more wraiths, fully formed and ready to root.

Finally, the Houses and their beef.

The Houses are the seats of the witches of [PLACE]. Magic is not necessarily passed down through bloodlines, though it can be. For [PLACE] to be sufficiently protected, a witch must reside in each of the Houses at all times. This will come into play when we start creating our characters, but here is some preliminary conflict to consider:
  • Rivalry
  • Personal tiff
  • One of the Houses is vacant and there is no word of a replacement witch, leaving the area thinly protected
  • One of the Houses is cursed (details unknown), ostracized by the rest
These are just suggestions. We could go in entirely different directions, but this is just to get things rolling.

I'll leave you with that for now (I hope it's not too much). I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts!
