RIP Avicii 1989-2018
18 years. 6570 days to be exact, since the world fell into chaos. Approximately 6570 days since Project Archangel launched. It’s not as if he could ever forget. Counting them was just another way to keep himself sane. Cooped up in this facility every day, and well....turns out being one of the last of humanity didn’t mean he got special treatment.

Number 12 sat quietly, taking a moment to rest before meal time. There were cuts on his arms from the day’s training, always pushed too hard. He sniffled and wiped his eyes, pulling his sleeves down. There was supposed to be a big announcement that day. He’d rather not miss something else.

He entered the large room where they usually shared their meals. His eyes sought out Number 13, spotting him and sitting down. “What do you think the announcement is?” Number 12 asked, fidgeting with his sleeves. He was rather nervous about the day ahead. Perhaps training would get harder. Maybe it was something else.

Covered in sweat, and bleeding a little from her right nostril, Five allowed herself a moment to sit down. She was in her room, nothing but a tiny cubical with a bed, wardrobe, and desk. In her room, she didn't have many things. She had some kind of teddy bear. She assumed one of her parents gave it to her. She had no memory of them, and she didn't really want anyone seeing it, so it was usually shoved into a desk draw where her birth certificate sat, to remind her of her birth name, which didn't seem to matter here as she was only ever called Five. And that was it, all she owned. The rest: The clothes, the furniture, everything had been provided for her as she grew. The lack of individuality here was stifling.

Five collected herself quickly, swiped at her bleeding nose with a tissue and changed into something not caked with sweat so that she could head out into the main eating area. Another thing she had no choice in, the food. Complaining about it did no good, unless you were genuinely allergic like she was to milk and cheese. That had scored her a glass of orange juice for breakfast at least a couple times. Their nutrition was well looked after, of course. The trainers didn't exactly want the kids falling over dead due to lack of iron or something.

The two sitting there already that she noticed were Twelve and Thirteen. Neither of them really spoke to her if they could avoid it, but they liked to take solace in one another. As she passed the table, she heard twelve ask a question. It was directed at Thirteen, of course, but would that really stop her from butting in? No way. "Don't be nervous, Twelve, it's probably just more of the same dressed up as something new. They have a flare for the dramatic rough here, if you hadn't noticed in the last 18 years." She gave him a wink, then plopped herself down on one of the chairs, putting her feet up on another free chair. She had all the appearance of someone who was careless, but usually what she portrayed was the exact opposite of what she really felt. This time was no different

13 positively devoured the high-value paste on his plate. The specifics of the paste were optimized for him, the ideal food to sustain his accelerated metabolism. It was bland.

As 12 sat, he briefly nodded in acknowledgment. After listening to him, 13 answered.

"Probably our mission," he said. "How are you feeling?" Despite seeing himself as a monster, he could still care for his comrades.

"Hello, 5," 13 said. "How was training today?"

He then polished off the last of his food paste, and stretched his hand. He'd been practicing transforming his skin to hardened bone, but he'd made a mistake. His entire hand was converted to dead bone, which was quite a nuisance to rectify. At least it was reversible.

17 sighs as he stretches and sits down on his bed after cleaning his room them stares at mirror in front of him "What do they want today" He thinks to himself before he gets up and grabs a book off his desk before he makes it fade away into his hand. He turns to his open door and strolls out with black sweats and a white hoodie that says "Sonder" in yellow. While strolling down the hallway he throws the hoodie halfway on to cover his ears but still have most of his hair out.

While walking he stops at a door with the sign saying "Meal pick-up" he cracks the door to see who was inside and then steps in. He quietly walked towards a empty table and sat on top of it with his feet hovering right above the ground and the same book he had picked up from his disk suddenly dropped into his hand from nowhere it seems. He runs his finger over the middle of the book then cracks it open to where a small red page holder was and take it out and puts it into his pocket. Instead of reading out loud where start to notice his presence he just sits there and scans the the book minding his own as the the 3 others talk at a table across from them.

12 shifted his sleeves down a bit more. “I’m alright. J-Just a bit tired from this morning.” he looked down, suddenly finding the table very interesting. “H-How are you?” he didn’t look back up. “W-Was training o-okay today?”

It was obvious he was lying. None of them were ever alright, not at this facility. There were drops of blood soaking into his sweater, though he did his best to hide it. He knew how his fellow ‘siblings’ could worry.

Seven awoke from another rough night of sleep, these dreams she had been having lately were wrought with various tribulations. She sighed scrunching the bridge of her nose with her thumb and index finger. “Not another migraine”
They had been getting worse as of late in correlation with the nightmares. Hearing herself up she got dressed into her attire everything a drab and bland coloring. Stretching a little she washed her face checking herself in the mirror. She looked rough but still managed a soft smile that was warm as always like the morning suns rays upon grass after a light dew had graced upon the green flowing fields. Her eyes shone this emerald hue.
A younger man about the age of 19 groaned as he was easily slammed to the ground his breath knocked from him immediately as he had struck.
“Again!”

“Okay..I’m ready”
The instructor called out in an authoritative voice.
Her brow beaded with sweat as she took her fighting stance once more and prepared for the onslaught of sparring partners to set upon her.
Seven trained against three partners everyday in the morning in hand to hand combat, after she did cardio training as well as an obstacle course. Following that was more combat training and then strategy and tactics. Now complete with the morning routine she headed toward the cafeteria if that is what it could be called and upon entrance her entire demeanor changed the smile that was dim altered to a beaming brilliance.

“Morning everyone, hope everyone’s training went well” Seven breathed socially as she moved through the line and made her way to her seat, reiterating her greetings to the others again as she passed finally coming to rest at her seat the one she sat in everyday. She looked over the food packet and shrugged happily before opening it and beginning to drink the paste.
Once done she finished the glass if water and juice on her tray. Seven leaned back in her chair afterward her eyes moving around the room with a sigh. The others looked worse than she did. I hope they are doing alright....I wonder if they are worried about the announcement today
She knew twelve and thirteen probably didn’t want to be spoken to and five was already doing her best to engage them this morning. A few others passed by giving their own greetings which Seven returned happily as well as answering a few questions one of them had about the course requesting tips on certain obstacles. She was more than happy to help even offering to show them next time they do it if the guardians allowed.
This was her life day in and day out... but it would all change with this announcement of course she did not know it at the time but something felt different about today that she couldn’t place. An air of uncertainty not only from her fellow siblings but the instructors as well. It was tension and it seeped from everyone in waves.

“ATTENTION”

Everyone with a few brain cells knew who the voice was. The Man in Charge. No one knew his real name, but that’s what they called him.

“Now I know all of you have heard that there is an announcement today. Well, this is it. This will be more important than any of your other activities or assignments ever. You will be going outside.’

‘Now, here’s the catch. You will be going out in pairs of two with one Guardian each. Some of you will not be going. Here are the teams:

Number Twelve. Number Seven. Guardian Gabriella. You will be Team A.

Number Seventeen. Number Thirteen. Guardian Decon. You will be Team B.

The rest of you, proceed with daily schedule.’

The transmission cut off.

Five got nothing more than a few words out of twelve and thirteen, but that was the usual. She let them talk amongst each other as she ate her assigned slop for the day and rested her aching head. Briefly, she acknowledged Seven as she walked in with a curt nod of her head. She had always felt mildly jealous of how Seven seemed to appoint herself their mother, and how when they wanted advise or help everyone seemed to go to her. Five usually acted a little more coldly to Seven for this reason.

That didn't exactly change when she heard the announcement either "How the fuck do only they get to go outside??" Five slammed her fist on the table. One of the guardians gave her a very stern look and said "Enough, five". Begrudgingly, she sat down, shovelling the rest of her food and drink down her gob angrily.

Gabrielle was stood to Attention next to Decon, her face was unreadable as she scanned the archangels faces, but truly, she was concerned about this mission. She had been briefed this morning. Pulled out of training and told. Now Seven, she was mature enough to handle the outside world, maybe. But some of these children, because they were still just children to her, were unstable. Wasn't it too soon for this? They were remarkable, but did the boss realise they were not simply a weapon but human children?

None of this, Gabs let show on her face, that she was good at. She turned to the crowd, Five was already making a scene. Silly girl... didn't even understand what she was wishing for. Just wanted it because her siblings had it. Her inferiority problem was useful at the start for her training, but it was getting out of hand quite rapidly. Luckily another guardian shut her down.

"Seven, Twelve" She called out "Please follow me to the debriefing room once you have finished eating" She said, before turning on her heel and heading there herself.

Twelve, who always ate little, joined her immediately. He walked a bit faster to keep up with her. A barely noticeable trail of red drops followed him; he made a mental note to put some bandages on before he went outside. “Ma’am?” he spoke up, his voice still soft and shaky. “Where exactly is ‘outside’?” he felt a bit ridiculous asking that question. Having been born in the facility, he had no idea what the world looked like. He had seen pictures, but never felt it.

Decon stood next to Gabrielle as he sighed hearing the big announcement. He wasn’t sure if he could handle outside with watching the kids. They weren’t weapons to him and certainly couldn’t handle the world. But maybe he was being too paranoid or maybe he didn’t trust himself, however he still had a job to do. Deek was good at doing his job and he was good at keeping a cool head. He glanced at Five and a wave of sadness hit his heart. This wasn’t fair at all how the rest of them didn’t get outside, Decon did not agree with it but he had to do his job.

“Thirteen, seventeen when you are done eating follow me to the debriefing room,” Decon sighed as he walked to the room himself making sure it was another room.

Forgetting who he was again he continued reading until he heard Number 5 have a outburst he looked over and cracked a slight smile "So full of energy....still a child at heart" he thought to himself and realized that they called his number “Oops I guess the number is my name huh” he reminded himself in his head and then he scanned the room until he found the guardian he’ll be going with and gave him a fellow wave then scans the room for his partner for the mission and notices him sitting down next to Number 12 and 5. He thinks hard while looking back and forward to his book and Number 13 and sighs. He tosses his book behind him but before it could hit the ground it fades into air "Still kind of cool" the quick thought had crossed his mind as he jumped off the table walked in the direction of his partner he lifts his arms up and stretches which he feels a small pop in his arms and lets out a slight yawn.

While arriving to the table he waves with a soft face at everyone and then looks at 13 and gives him a thumbs up "Silent as always" he scolds himself in the back of his mind but still he had his reason and he'll follow through. People who've known him knows what he's saying through his gestures and actions...maybe not spot on all the time but the idea is what matters. Though he sits down and waits for 13 to get up and head out. Then he sees 12 takes off and catches a whiff of a metallic smell "Blood" he thinks immediately and scratches his head "Well Guardian Gab will take care of him if he doesn't take care of himself"

Momentarily distracted by her own troubling thoughts, twelve surprised her, his voice cutting through her thoughts. Looking at him properly for the first time that day, she could immediately see he was injured "Twelve, nevermind that for now it will be explained, why didn't you go to the med bay if you were injured?" She asked him sternly "It is important to look after yourself. How can you go on a mission if you reek of blood?" She shook her head "Come, I will take you in case there is a wait, we don't have too much time." She turned on her heels, expecting that he follow her. She hadn't been an army nurse, but she could deal with most wounds and knew how to keep things clean.

She would meet Seven in the room she had specified. She was glad to see her coming on. The girl had leadership qualities, even if she couldn't see it in her self yet. She would be a good team member for Twelve. Once they got to the medbay she turned, expecting to see him standing there. The room was busy, and there was only one nurse on duty at the moment because it was lunch time, as she suspected. "I'll deal with this Tabitha." She smiled at the nurse on duty, a pretty brunette lady, meek looking but certainly very brave. "Sit down, Twelve, show me where you are hurt, ok?"

Twelve felt his cheeks burn in shame. He continued to follow her, head held down. “I-I didn’t w-want anyone to worry about it. It’s nothing that doesn’t h-ha-happen every day.” he said quietly. It wasn’t a big deal for him, the shadows hurt him at the slightest strain. “H-Hi Ms. Tabitha.” he waved to the nurse, whom he knew well at this point.

He sat down obediently. Disrespect, or well, disobeying wasn’t in his nature. He knew what happened to those who misbehaved. Twelve rolled up his sleeves to reveal the cuts all along his forearms and hands.

13 largely ignored 17 as he walked to the debriefing room. Although he’d known 17 for ages, he felt little need to fraternize with him, or anyone else for that matter. Still, they would be going outside together, and that meant that they’d need to cooperate. He turned to 17.

“Can your power turn inedible matter to something edible?” 13 figured that would be useful to know, if they were stranded.

Walking to the debriefing room with Number 13 was rather a drag but it was to be expected knowing him as long as he have. Number 13 never gave much attention or care to anyone even when put in training together Number 13 always kept that wall up. "Asshole" the dark thought crossed his mind randomly and he shook his head of the thought and took a breath.

He then regained his focus when he saw Number 13 asked him a question. He pondered on if he should speak he even opened his mouth for a second but then just nodded his head and cracked a slight smile "So that's what fuels him....so simple....kind of funny" . He then pointed at Number 13 for a second and rubbed his stomach while slightly smiling. Enjoying the joke even more he made a apple appear in one hand and a banana in the other and held it out to him raising his eyebrow and moving his hands up and down like he's weighing them out.

13 narrowed his eyes, and suddenly snatched the apple. In a few bites, most of the fruit was gone, and 13 slowly extended a hand for the banana. His eyes were focused exclusively on the yellow fruit.

Decon turned behind him to see the two fight as he sighed. Number 17 reminded him of himself especially to other guardians, He didn’t like that. He then walked to the two boys and smiled at them, “you two are going to have to get along or else the mission won’t be very good for ether of you.” Decon then leaned against the wall hoping they can reach an agreement on something, well he hoped they would figure it out as he wondered what Gabrielle was doing to keep her archangels in line. Decon was quite worried about the two and wanted to help them solve their issues, although it would be hard. He saw 13 snatch the fruit and eat it as he furrowed his brow and did not know what he meant by making fruit appear. He was like weighing it? Why though Decon thought to himself.

Seven was snapped from her inner thoughts as Five nodded respectfully? She always seemed to have it out for the older sibling but why Seven had not yet figured it out. She would have to ask her about it later as the speakers feedback kicked on. The announcement resounded throughout the cafeteria. After it had finished she let out a shaky breath, and her eyes rested on Twelve. The younger man stood immediately following the guardians orders to which Seven did the same as she passed by tables other shared their comments and mostly complaints about why they could not be the ones going outside. She followed silently only giving a “Yes Mam” to her comments as they detoured to the medical area to bandage Twelves arms.
What had occurred during training that caused these injuries? Sure she had sustained injuries before but never anything like that. They looked almost deliberate. “Twelve... your powers caused this...”
She expressed softly to herself making the assumption as her own powers often did the same when she overused them.
“Looks like we are partners for this mission”
Seven added nonchalantly as she waited for more instructions her visage never betraying that soft warmth of friendliness but inside she was on fire. Her mind flashed wildly between confusion, frustration, concern, excitement.
She wanted to go outside but always felt the trepidation the guardians held about it in their gaze whenever she found the courage to ask.

“I have to admit I am curious to, I haven’t been outside since I was four years old” the girl commented absentmindedly to herself while she awaited the others.

Seeing how quick Number 13 took the apple he couldn't help to break into a laugh and then dropped the banana but made it disappear before it hit the ground so he can cover his mouth. Then he saw guardian Deacon standing at the wall and then smiled and threw his arm around Number 13 and smiled. Then he brought the banana back into his hand and slid it into Number 13's pocket before he continued walking to the briefing room. He then turned around and shot a grin and to both Number 13 and Guardian Deacon.

"We're all good here....Now lets have some fun" Number 17 said in a deep but soothing voice.....it felt kind of good to speak again. Number 17 spoke for the first time in months as he wasn't experiencing much but excitement as he had to resist or his adrenaline would start pumping and he become absolutely uncontrollable.

“You’ll probably enjoy this 17,” Decon smiled at him and 13, “so the boss wants me to send you two outside for a mission...guardian Gabrelle’s team are going too so you will probably work alongside with them also, I’m so glad you spoke again 17 it’s so great to hear you.” Decon was excited that 17 decided to speak since he never spoke unless he was excited. Hopefully the boys would do ok since outside was a different story, who knows what they will think once they go outside. Decon was worried but he trusted them especially after 17 spoke and put his arm around 13, they seemed like they were fine.

Somewhere else in the facility, Komi was making her own preparations.

She had received her own brief the day before the big announcement in a private voice message from the Man In Charge. There were two teams being sent outside and it was Komi's job to keep track of their positions and update them with any new information.

The room Komi was in was a large control room, filled with many computers, screens, you name it. There were other in the room as well, the were just like her. They spent most of their waking moments in this control room, coordinating everything from behind the curtain. However, there have been occasions where Komi would step out and personally meet with some of the Archangels, making sure they were completing their trainings and keeping themselves in shape.

On some of the screens, there were live satellite feeds of the outside world. It looked like a wasteland. Komi was currently situating herself at a control station. Infront of her were some joysticks and other controls that looked like they belonged to a plane. In reality, they were for the overhead surveillance drones that she would be using to follow both teams that would be sent out.

After making sure both drones were operational and flight ready, Komi slipped on a headset, adjusting the mic. Immediately she could hear radio chatter from the other people inside the control room. But they were occupied with other tasks. Komi was the only person assigned to this expedition of sorts.

Gab just shook her head “better to worry while it’s minor than be forced to worry later when it gets infected. Your immune system is likely to be weak to infection given you never having been outside.” She said “it’s necessary to take precautions.”

Seven followed them in and helped twelve with the bandaging. She also asked about outside and, since they were all here now, we’ll, she supposed it was as good time as any. “HumAna have ruined outside,it used to be full of colour, full of beauty. Now outside is barren, full of danger. Nothing grows there.Down here we have our garden rooms, but All of that is either poisonous or extinct up here. Our mission is a simple scouting mission. Check for human life, check for plant life or regeneration.” She shook her head “Make sure you listen to me at all times. Don’t act brashly. You’re life will probably depend on it.”

Twelve finished up bandaging his arms. They were tight enough to keep the bleeding at bay, but not cut off circulation. He rolled his sleeves down over them. He felt a bit apprehensive about going outside, but he was prepared. He assumed he was prepared.

In fact, he was excited. “The outside.....” he whispered. Twelve knew there would be danger, and that was most definitely not a perk, but he was still going outside. “Just a quick check.” he nodded.

“But those aren’t the only dangers right mam?”
Seven responded after finishing tying off Twelves bandages her hand turning his over to check she had appropriately covered all the cuts.
All done Twelve, and don’t worry this quick peek will be over before we know it”
She offered to not necessarily undermine the situation but definitely lighten the mood that seemed to be building. She nodded in affirmation to the guardians order of listening to her when outside but if push came to shove Seven would do what was necessary in order to bring the trio home. She would protect them all with everything she had. If she couldn’t what else were these powers for.
Seven stood ready to move on seeing as the patch job on twelve was a success but now her mind wandered with worry about Gabs words that his immune system could be more compromised should he receive these wounds outside.

“We are ready mam, we have been training for this”
She attested as she looked from the guardian with a serious and focused visage before her features softened looking to Twelve again.

As the banana vanished, 13's face dropped. As 17 threw his arm around him he faked a grin, waving politely at Deacon. After the banana returned, 13 smiled genuinely, and began to eat it.

"Indeed, we're all good," he said.

13 was eager to see the outside, even for a short while. Who knew what was out there?
