Today has been nice.Kind of.

Moving in has been a huge hassle. Like, first, I have to wake up early, and I know I might be writing this and someone is gonna think, "oh Sera's just a quaint little wussy who can't work a 9 to 5", and that's kind of true but I have to bust my butt out of bed at THREE IN THE MORNING!! Because the only flights available were toward five to seven, and with traffic and WAITING, I'd have to get there at least an hour early and I really wanted to push this day to be the day or else my schedule would get thrown to the curbside. So I came in early, and I got my boarding pass in. Awesome, smooth sailing, my bags made it through the metal detector. I'm doing AWESOME. Great. My pass beeps once and turns out, I have a new seat assignment. Not a big deal. Then I realized I hate my life.

Got my carry-on on the overhead. Slick! I'm about to put my headphones in and my neck pillow, and sleep like a baby.

Then the guy an aisle next to me throws up.
Long story short, it was a long hell of Febreeze, perfume, and coffee grounds. I don't even want to write about it, god, I hate my life. Four hours of pain.

Okay, but I'm over it. I already cried about it on Snapchat. But cutting that all out of the picture, I'm going to have to wait at LEAST a week un̷t͢i͏l until my stuff gets shipped in. Until then, all I really have are my clothes, some headphones, my make-up, my laptop, my trusty Middy (Just got this controller for 30 bucks used from an old musician on Marketplace, mmhm, I'm very smart), and a guitar. Oh, and I guess my phone.

So, I already phoned in about the apartment room, and the landlord was nice enough to send me pictures of the place. I mean, it's empty, but I wasn't really expecting a whole lot. I guess I'll have to shoehorn in some furniture, not to mention that the apartment room belongs to me! He told me there was also gonna be a roommate. Hopefully, they're nice. I think there's only one bathroom, so...Keep that crap clean. Please!

I'm stoked, but not stoked.

I got a ride to a restaurant nearby the apartment. They were a nice Hawaiian family shop who sold poke bowls and ramen, and as nice as they were, I was so checked out. They were saying something about lilikoi and guava smoothies.

It was 9:45 and I was already ready to crash on the floor. Save meee.

At least she had something in her stomach. That ramen was actually really good. Definitely brightened her spirits up, but she felt like shit right now, so she just reserved her priorities to getting her bags up in her room.

"I think it's...This place..." Her landlord did her the honor of leaving the key in the mail box, which Sera wasn't entirely on-board for, but whatever. If Landlord trusts the neighbors, then so be it.

"Key, key, key..." She unlocked the door to her room, taking a deep breath even before she turned the knob. "New life, Sera. New life!"

She opened it to the vacancy of an entire apartment. And to see someone else there.

Okay, relax, Sera. Confidence!

"Oh, h-hi. You must be the roommate?"

I turn to ask the question, so anxious, my thoughts. Your lips were soft like winter, in your passion, I was lost.

Surreal didn't even begin to explain the deep feeling in Devin's chest. He should feel some sort of newfound freedom, he finally had a place to call his own instead of crashing on someone's couch, and yet . . . He stared at the silver key, running his finger along the grooves as he stared at the empty room. The shining sun from the window illuminated the whole space, and he could feel the warmth of it all, but he still felt strange standing around. Like he was in an off-limits place. Like he was trespassing in his own home.

He sighed at the thought, gently putting his amp on the floor, followed by the guitar case and his carry-on. The only saving grace in this whole situation was the fact he had nothing to bring with him, just some extra clothes and everything he needed to make music. Some might have called it careless, but what was he supposed to bring? It wasn't like he had a real home that housed all his belongings.

"Let's see if the stove is working," he muttered to himself, stretching his back as he walked. The plane ride was exhausting, making him question the move altogether. If he knew he would have been stuck next to an arguing couple who couldn't control their kids the entire 2-hour flight, he would've simply stayed back home, playing just for tips.

"Shit, I'm gonna have to sleep on the floor too," he groveled, knowing the back pain that awaited him. It would be wise to go buy an air mattress or even a mattress topper until he could afford a real bed. He searched through the various cabinets, searching for any leftover pots the previous owner left, and as luck may have it.

"Score," he grinned to himself, pulling out the small pot, and turning the oven on until he heard the click of the door. His brow arched, hearing the stumbling and stuttering of his supposed roommate. "Hello," he responded, looking over her. "You're Sera, right?" That bright pink hair was unmistakable, "I'm Devin," he waved slightly, grabbing his carry-on off the floor. "I was going to make some ramen real quick, you want some?"

"Devin." She nodded in some hesitating agreement.

Landlord didn't tell me the name. Okay, well, he looks cool! Gives me the vibe of someone who plays acoustic under a metro station.

He definitely was staring at her hair. Out of obligation, she adjusted her bangs.

...Could she fit another bowl of ramen in her stomach? Yeah, yeah, she probably could.

"Yeah, I'm Sera, um, Sera Pick, like the guitar pick. Sure, I'd be happy to have some ramen, um, it smells great."

I don't think there's any noodles in it yet.

...
..
.

She literally can't think of anything else to say.
Her awkwardness and overt introvert presence was about as obvious as the sunrays from the windowsill. Promptly, she set her bags to the side, clearing her throat as she was essentially using all of the tasks she could perform right now to give her more time to come up with another sentence to strike up the conversation with, or literally anything to pad out this silence. It's almost like she was getting writer's block.

"Um- So Devin, what do you do? Did you just move in, or...Uh...Wait, no, I guess you'd have more furniture if you lived here, but um- So Devin, what do you do?"

SMOOTH SAILING, SERA!!

Her mentality is sweating bullets.

"The water is just starting to boil but - yeah I'm sure it'll smell great," he responded with a shrug. His hand shoved into the bag, rummaging through wires, clothes, folders, and other nicknacks until the plastic bag was pulled out. "It's kind of crushed so we can just split it," he suggested, opening the pack.

"I got here five minutes ago? I guess pretty moved in already," he joked slightly gesturing to his few things. "Don't have any furniture or anything, honestly," he spoke, "We should probably get a cheap dining table so we don't stand up the entire time," he explained before raising a brow again. Did she not see the amp? Probably not, the covering made the object easily blend into the shadows after all. His eyes pulled back to the pot, pouring the noodles into the bubbling water.

"Officially? I'm a musician I guess. On the side . . . I'm probably gonna have to get some retail job," he sighed at the thought. He didn't have a car, so he would have to work somewhere in the area, but all the places in the area seemed dull. The only mildly interesting place was someplace a few blocks down, what was the name? Ah, he didn't remember, but it was some restaurant with art plastered all over one of the walls, extremely eyecatching, but did he want to work as some sort of server? That would be depressing. Devin Halliday, an absolute rockstar by night, server by day.

"What do you do? Streamer or something? You kind of look the part," he cracked another joke, this time with a small chuckle. It was kind of funny, at least.

No, no, her ignoring the amp wasn't just a misplay, it was her clever and insecure smartness juices running through her head in order to segue him into talking about the music he played.

I definitely didn't just miss the amp entirely and I definitely didn't just notice it right now. Sera, you're butchering this, and I don't think a cheap dining table is gonna fix it!
"Officially? I'm a musician I guess. On the side . . . I'm probably gonna have to get some retail job."
"W-wow, that's- that's awesome! The...Music part, not the retail part, that's uh- yeah, that sucks."

💦💦💦💦💦💦

Sera was pulling out all of the stops for this public speech, wasn't she?
"What do you do? Streamer or something? You kind of look the part,"
"Heh, do I? T-thanks, I guess, but no, nah. I just really like these sorts of calming colors, and I feel like it helps push my voice out as um..."
She paused, her fingers doing all these wacky movements as she was trying to backtrack from a potential tangent.

"But, k-kind of! Surprise, I'm also a musician, and I do stream! I liiiiivestream myself doing music production, I play acoustiiiic, I do siiinging, I've got a little bit of the synesthesia- er, not to say I'm special- but, yeah, the synesthesiiia stuff, and I really like making short promo viiideos for indie artists!"

Oh my God, don't give him your whole resume, you dumbass.

"Uu-uhh, I-I should also get a job at the retail place, um-"

Embarrassing to admit, but she hadn't even thought about where to get a job. She had a style that could be best described as...

[
[GOTTA GET READY FOR THE FLIGHT [Surprisingly cute doodle of an airplane.]
work? fuuuck it, i'll totally figure it out hahahaaaa let's get packing! ! !

...Shoot first, ask later.

"H-hey, how about I get your phone number, and Iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii will go get a table, and, like, an air mattress, oh crap, I'll need a truck for that, and neither of us have a vehicle, huh? Well, I can definitely carry a table! I'm sure I can get an Uber to the nearest store for a portable table, so it should be fine!"

"Sounds like you're trying to get me to hire you," he chuckled slightly, leaning against the kitchen counter. She was . . . odd. Not in a bad way, the only person he knew that acted this way was the guitar player in his band, he was sure they would get along well. But, he doubted living with someone like this should cause any problems, she seems nice even, if not a little easy to fluster.

He stared down at the pot, gently stirring the noodles, attempting to cut them as they cooked. Even though they had broken off while dry, the noodles were still pretty long. "But it sounds like you do a lot of stuff, like a lot of stuff. I've always wanted to try video editing but I think I'd get in over my head," he spoke, sprinkling in the sauce pouch.

But, it would be nice living with another musician. Finally, someone that could understand slaving away for nights and nights over notes and chord progressions that didn't make sense with the rest of the instruments but that's what the lead guitarist wants. He huffed slightly to himself, recalling the now distant memory as he glanced over to Sera.

"I'll come with you so you don't have to carry it alone," he nodded, turning the stove on low. "I wanted to eat this first but - I'm realizing we probably don't even have plates," he sighed slightly. "Please tell me you've got some sorta furniture coming or we're going to have to spend all day today at a thrift store."

As much as Devin was fine with the idea of sleeping on the floor, he didn't want to sit on it all day either or eat out of pots and pans every day. Maybe it was a bad idea to just come with an amp, guitar, and microphone . . .

"Also, here," he fetched his phone from his pocket, carelessly tossing it to the woman. "Put your number in,"

"Sounds like you're trying to get me to hire you,"
IS HE READING MY MIND?! AHHHHHH-

"But it sounds like you do a lot of stuff, like a lot of stuff. I've always wanted to try video editing but I think I'd get in over my head,"
Something Sera can talk about?! Great, she can deviate him from his psychic energies.

"Oh! Well, it's not the most difficult thing in the world, but I guess you would need to dedicate a bit of time into it, and that could really mess up rehearsal hours if you're in a band, so it would be better to just hire a professional to do it...It's fine if you've got a lot of time in your hands like...Uh, jobless me, haha."

She was about to pitch a word in about the furniture, before her eyes locked on to an expensive-looking phone already being tossed in her direction. "WHAAH-"

She barely managed to catch the phone in her hands. "Okay! Got it! Um, number..." Her thumbs tapped away as she punched her number in.

"I'll go ahead and call it to make sure I still remember my number..."

...

"🎶All the things she said, all the things she said, runnin' through my head, runnin' through my head, runnin' through my head-🎵"

"AAHHH, I FORGOT-"

Her hand fumbled into her jean shorts as she furiously muted her phone, her face fully steamed up and ready to cook dumplings.

To be fair, it was really easy to tell why she was so embarrassed; she had one of her songs playing as her ringtone, which in her overly worried mind, gave off massive implications about her ego.

Though, even in a brief soundbite, it was a music that definitely matched her appearance and easily explained why she claimed she did so much; the ringtone embraced a funky electronic genre that could only be best described as a music that swung the hips of people who would listen to it. Snappy, bouncy, good to dance to at a club. Her voice was rhythmic, the instruments were catchy, and the song's buildup was going great, right up until she muted the payoff portion of it.

"Hufff...Hooh...Um..." Sera stared directly toward the floor, slowly handing the phone back to Devin. "Um, yeah, thank you, that's really nice of you to do, and yeah, there is supposed to be some furniture of mine coming in, it's not too much, it's basically some portable chairs, some pillows, silverware, and my parents said they'd send a mattress they had lying around for me, socomingtomorrow,orso,weshouldhavesomestufftofilltheplaceup..."

"Damn we're both jobless?" he sighed, rubbing the bridge of his nose. "It's a wonder the landlord actually let us live here," he turned his attention to the pot, taking it off the heat as the water continued to bubble. However, the blaring song immediately pulled his gaze back to the woman, forcing his brow to arch again. Was that her song? Hearing her speak and hearing the song back to the back - they did sound familiar. Truthfully, Devin wasn't the type to listen to songs like that, he only knew it cause one of the only friends he had allowed a 6-second snippet to play in her room continuously. If the ring tone were any other part of the song, he wouldn't have recognized it.

"Having one of your songs as your own ringtone? I'd say that's pretty good marketing," he nodded, rummaging through his bag again. "I'd do it if my phone was ever not on silent," he joked, pulling some reusable utensils before pouring the water out of the pot.

"I actually have noooo idea what you said, but you're free to put whatever you want in the apartment. We're both splitting the rent here anyway," he spoke, sticking his fork into the small pot of noodles. It tasted of salt and metal, but he wasn't in a position to complain. It was this or potentially spending 20 dollars eating out, no matter where they went. That was the city for you, with better and more diverse cuisine but at a higher price. It sucked he couldn't live off of noodles for the rest of his life.

"Do you have a car by any chance? If we're gonna buy furniture, we can't walk all the way back here holding it," he said, putting the pot down before walking over to her. "If not . . ." he trailed off, taking the phone back, scrolling through the contacts. "I might? Have someone that can help us out. If he's not busy, I know that guy's always picking up extra shifts," he mumbled a bit with another sigh.

"Actually, he might be able to get us some free food from his job. I could really go for an actual meal. I guess we could get to know each other more too."

"...It's a cover..." She mumbled reluctantly.

She wasn't up for trying to repeat everything, so she left it to a "Yeah, I have furniture." Sera sighed. So far, he didn't sound like he saw her as some aloof lunatic with a penchant for ruining her first impression. Two musicians in the same room! This should be fun, right?

After a good look into the pot of ramen, she wasn't even sure if she had the appetite. It probably tasted like...A whole load of nothing and spicy powder.

"Um, n-not a car, though. Yeah, I Ubered here...I guess I should've thought about that...But, uhm, if you do have someone...I'll happily pay for gas. Like, cross my heart. And I mean, I have a friend or two here who lives nearby, in fact, it's 'cause of their recommendation that I managed to get a room here, so, you know, I could ask if they have a truck we could borrow."

Oh wow, he had his own connections. Sera gulped. She could've gotten a meal for free? Very swiftly, she pretended like she hadn't eaten 30 minutes ago.

Extra shifts, huh...Hardworking guy. I can respect the hustle!

"If you want an actual meal, sure, I'm totally down! Um, if he doesn't fill in for dessert, I can pay for it. We can get something to sleep on for the night, and then when we have our necessities, we can go hang out somewhere! Karaoke, maybe?" She offered with an enticing smile.
