Blake Walsh

The question caught her off guard. Why didn’t you tell me? her eyes stared into his as he saw the misery in his eyes but somewhere behind it all, he was hopeful. Blake shifted to move to sit on a bar stool, feeling exhausted. He was talking to her, which was a relief in itself. She was almost sure he wouldn’t give her a chance. He reassured her that it would’ve been okay, that he would have stuck with her through it all. Blake bit her lip harshly as she held her emotions in. The loyalty and devotion Jackson showed her was not deserved and yet, she couldn’t leave him.

Licking her bloodied lips lightly, Blake shook her head slowly. ”Because my voice didn’t matter till now.” she murmured to him. Swallowing hard, a hand reached up to touch the bruises forming in her face, “Because even the slightest bit of honesty could get me killed...and Carter was close to finishing me off tonight.” Blake tapped her finger on the counter a moment before looking up at Jackson again.

“I came here three weeks ago, ready to do what I’ve always done. Get in and get out. That’s how it’s always been, no diving deeper into my clients details or wars. They were never my battles to fight, only to report on...Tonight,” she took a deep breath as she recalled the confrontation outside with Carter. “Seeing Sinead...like that...I had to confront him and see where that got me?” Blake let out a bitter laugh before shaking her head again and sighing, her eyes once again finding Jackson’s.”I envy these Porters you know? I see the family and I just wonder when it would be my turn...Jackson, it’s been three weeks okay, and I get that. “ She shrugged her shoulder. ”I’ve never felt this way in this amount of time...so sure, so hopeful.” Blake then paused in her words and hopped down from the bar stool with effort.
”I don’t deserve your affection, I don’t deserve your kindness and I don’t deserve to stare into those blue eyes or see that amazing smile that lights up a room...but if there is one thing I know I deserve, it’s to be happy. And god dammit, so do you.” Blake began to turn away with that, ready to let him live the life he wanted.

Kieran crossed his arms. He had watched Blake make her return and her heartfelt plea. It just made him sick, he thought, how cruel some people were. He casually lit a cigarette and tapped his foot.

"Be careful, Jack," was all he said before disappearing out the side door and through a line of policemen. He had had enough of them tonight, all of them. He loved his family, but the histrionics that this feud with the IWU was bringing out were beginning to get to him. He was also nonplussed that his cover was surely blown and he needed to retreat.

He took a cab to his hotel where he packed as quickly as he could, the confused bellhop was easily greased to keep his mouth shut about the affair. He thought about returning to the Porter house, but he wanted his distance from them given all that had been going on. He then thought about the risks of returning to the flat he had picked out as a hideaway. He had told Blake the address, given her a key. Maybe his small act of kindness would be enough to keep the secret, even if she was a committed double agent. Either way, the late evening found him and his rented Bentley at a respectable Edwardian era apartment block within spitting distance of the Irish Sea. He could smell the salt in the air and hear the chatter of the gulls as he used his spare key to gain entry to the flat.

He sighed, setting everything down. He was alone in a strange city, pulled out of his typical comfort by an exhilarating debut as a confidential informant. He had held someone at gunpoint today... He turned on the light in the bathroom and stared into his own keen brown eyes. His tie was untied, his hair disheveled. He stepped back into the bedroom and began taking off layers. Lonely and scared, tired and excited, he found sleep in the armchair of his rented flat with a loaded gun in his hand waiting for the knock on the door.

Jackson smiled as she laughed at her own pain. He had to admire the courage it took to call out a psychopath. As she went on to explain that she didn't deserve his affection, his smile faded away. He should've just let her walk away. After everything that had happened, the ugly truth being revealed, anyone would've thought he was a nutcase if he stopped her. This may have been true, but no one here knew her like he did. "Fuck..." He muttered as she got further away. Lightly banging his fist on the bar table, he quickly shot around it. He jogged until he caught up with her, grabbing her by the hand. In one swift pull, he turned her into him. One Blake faced him, he grabbed her face and passionately kissed her. "Don't walk away from me like that. You belong right here," He said as he broke away and pressed his forehead against hers.

He moved his hands down, intercepting hers before they could fall. "I don't know about tomorrow, but right now, this exact minute, I don't want anyone else, but you." He looked down at her hands, rubbing them delicately with his thumbs. "Ah, Blake... What're you doin' to me?" He chuckled, shaking his head. He looked up at her, his blue eyes staring into hers. "I'm not supposed to be like this." He ran his tongue across his lips, smiling once more.

"I wasn't sure what to do until I watched you walk away. That was one of the worst feelings I've ever had." He looked around at the destruction around them, mostly caused by panicked patrons. "I don't care about what you did. As long as everything your saying is the truth." He looked up at her eyes once more, trying to find any hints of deception behind them.

Carter had ordered a glass of scotch while he waited, eagerly anticipating his boss's venture over from afar. As Jared made his way over, his steel eyes traced him until he took his seat. He made it a point to take a sip of the scotch before answering, feeling quite parched. He blew the remainder of the smoke from his mouth and rested the cigarette on the ash tray. "Well, the Mayor is dead. Puked his guts out all over the floor." He picked up his glass once more, taking a hefty sip of the fiery liquid. He scrunched his face at the sharp taste, pressing his fingers to his esophagus to help it go down.

"Porter didn't take a sip though," He looked up at his boss as he picked the cigarette back up off the ash tray. "Some broad took the glass from him. Probably dead right now. What a waste of poison," He subtly shook his head. "Blake also went a little rogue. I have reasons to believe she is colluding with the Porters. Although, she may have sealed her own fate tonight." Carter sat back agains the cushion, scratching at his beard. "If we want to dispose of the Porters permanently, we need to use something a little more... Reliable." A sinister smirk ran across his lips.

Despite the lack of emotion on Nikolai's face, even he wasn't immune to her adorableness. "That's good. Schoolwork is important. It teaches you to finish what you started." He looked down to her, puffing large clouds out of the corner of his mouth. He slowly nodded his head once she brought up the story about Brady. Family and business were always a tricky in his realm. The way he saw it, if your brother or sister wanted to take power away from you, swindle your chances of success, they were no longer family. "Conor is a wise man and a good role model, but I think you stick up for yourself better than he does."

Once she asked him if he stood up for himself, his cold eyes slid up to the metal gates. "I do what I need to do to protect my status. I find that if you show what you're truly capable of at least once, you rarely have to exercise your power after that." Before they could walk any further, he heard one of his men call out to him, informing him that they had found his briefcase. He looked down to Emery, crouching down to her eye level. "No matter what terrible things happen, whether it be to you or your family, never forget who you are." He reached around his neck, removing the pendant. He opened up her tiny hand and placed the necklace inside. "Let this be a reminder of your power. I look forward to doing business with you, Ms. Callahan." The pendent would hold a scripture in Russian engraved into the stone, translating to 'May My Violence Bring Peace'. He nodded to her, before walking off in the direction of his car.

Blake had every intention of walking through the doors of the casino if Jackson wanted her to, not looking back. Luckily, the blonde woman didn't have to go as far as she thought and a warm familiar hand wrapped around hers tightly. Blake smiled softly as Jackson pulled her back to him, she spun around and placed her hand on his chest to stop her momentum before his lips were on hers. Blake winced slightly but kissed him back deeply, taking her time pulling away from it. Once Jackson had, his words touched her heart and she blushed a deep red. He held her hands in his own, holding it towards their chests. Her eyes watered again as he spoke such sweet things to her. Blake let out a laugh as he asked her what she was doing to him, claiming that he wasn't suppose to be like this. She held onto any response she might have as he continued on.

Silently, she nodded, as he hoped that everything she was saying was true. "That's my truth love, and I'm sticking to it." She said to him lightly before she leaned in and pecked him on the lips once more. Her eyes then turned to look around at the wreckage and she frowned. The memories that were now reminding her of everything that had happened tonight certainly put a damper on things. "You wanna get outta here?" She asked him seriously as she remembered the suite Kieran had let her stay in. Blake was confused by the man, but was grateful for her generosity despite his wrong doings. Reaching into her bag, she grabbed the keys and dangled them in front of him.

"Kieran gave me these...said he was planning on leaving but decided I needed it more, which is true." Blake looked around the almost empty casino and bit her lip. "IWU isn't messing around anymore Jackson, with Ciara gone, the real threat has just surfaced." The blonde looked to Jackson nervously. "Carter snitched because he was sure you would kill me...if he knows I'm alive now..." Blake looked at the keys in her hand, they weighed heavily on her skin as she wondered what to do. Blake wanted to go to her own home, lay in her own bed...but hiding out for a few days was wiser. "So...free suite and no one to share it with, care to join?"

rsz_1b4fadf2224bf798e86f07c3fbeca2b8d.jpgThe reassurance of her words was a relief. He watched her gaze move to scenery around them, able to see the guilt in her shimmering eyes. At the mention of Carter, his nostrils flared. He would forever remember that man as the one who struck Blake. "Little prick," he muttered, shaking his head. Despite the stressful situation she presented, his smile reappeared as she explained she had no one to share the empty suite with. "I think I could that," He said with a wink, placing a quick kiss upon her lips. Jackson looked both ways at the Porter guards around them, finding the best course of action to slip away. Deciding that the side exit would be easiest, seeing as it led directly to the parking lot, he took Blake by the hand and led her outside.

As they stepped back out into the bitter cold, Jackson rested his arm over Blake to keep her warm. The Cresta was easily recognizable, being one of the last cars in the VIP section. He released Blake and moved to the passenger side. "Lead the way." He tossed his keys to Blake, allowing her to be one the few people to drive his car. He climbed in himself, hoping that she would be able to peel out of the parking lot unnoticed.

After a few minutes of driving, they arrived down at the tall building. "Christ, let's remember to thank Kieran. It'll make him feel better if he knows I stayed as your bodyguard," He chuckled, unbuckling himself from the seat. Despite how excited he was to spend the night with her, he still understood the severity of Blake's position. His eyes cautiously rounded the corners of the building as they stepped inside.

He let her lead the way up to the suite number four. After sliding in the key she was given, the door creaked open to reveal a kempt room. He knew the man was practicing to be a priest, but the tidiness was beyond impressive, considering Jackson's impulsive behavior when it came to cleaning. "Well, this is a nice fit, innit'?" He looked around the room. The nightstand was fitted with a bible, the old paper pages worn to a soft, thin sheet. He made it a point to put the bolt lock on the door and keep his Walther PPK next to the bible.

The unmistakable click of the hammer sounded in the dark and a figure thence unseen emerged in the doorway. The sillhoutte carried a pistol.

"You've got three seconds to..." the man paused. He reached over a flicked on the light, bathing the room in yellow glow from the overhead.

"Jackson?" Kieran asked, startled. He looked then to Blake, then his features softened and he rolled his eyes slightly with a knowing look. "It was a 50/50 chance whether you two tried to show up here."

He stowed the gun in the waistband of his pants and tugged on his suspenders with his thumbs. His shirtsleeves were rolled up and he looked disheveled like he had been asleep. He crossed his arms in bemused annoyance.

"We'll have none of that here tonight. The sheets are brand new."

Jared Armstrong

Jared let a faint smile play on his lips as Carter explained the Mayor had been killed, as per his request. "Well, damn. That's terrible news. It was supposed to be a big night for him, with the fundraiser and all. But, if one associates with dangerous people such as the Porters, it's only a matter of time before someone harms them." He accepted his drink from the waiter and immediately took a sip from the glass. "It sounds like this city needs a new mayor in light of Anderson's unfortunate death. Perhaps someone who can put a stop to all of this crime," he said, with a wink.

The man's face took on a more serious demeanour at mention of James managing to avoid the poison and that some woman had swallowed it instead. "Well, that's disappointing, but Porter's death would have been a bonus to the primary objective. Any idea who the woman was? With a bit of luck, it might have been his wife - her death would be sure to distract him for long enough." As he listened to the details about Blake, he placed his glass on the table and pensively rubbed his chin. "What do you mean she went rogue?! Is this related to your cut lip?" he asked, his tone sounding stern. "Are you sure she's been colluding and not simply getting close to them because that's what she was told to do? Either she's working for me or she's pushing up the daisies."

James Porter

1526998176613-png.443297
James had stayed outside with Ryan for a time as the ambulance was driven away - rushing Sinead to the hospital. James nodded his head as the man mentioned putting the casino on lock-down. Whilst he processed everything that was said, his mind was focused more on his family than anything else at that moment. Then Ryan reassured him and reminded him that Sinead was strong and they should be too. Perhaps it was due to a lifetime of loss and pain, but he wasn't feeling so optimistic about the whole thing. Whilst James would reassure his loved ones in the same way Ryan was reassuring him, he deep down didn't believe Sinead was going to survive this one.

*****

James had been walking around the casino with Detective Donnelly, looking out for any clues to assist the cops. The face of the waiter who had served the poisoned drinks was ingrained in James' mind and he didn't doubt the man was one who he'd seen with Jared Armstrong. He was also certain this was in retaliation for the IWU's explosives being destroyed. James suddenly stopped on the spot when the Detective made the comment about needing an explanation. "Then find a fucking explanation! Do your damn job instead of asking me to do your job for you, whilst blaming me for the fact you have to do your job. Sinead was poisoned by a drink intended for me. You were here and your colleagues were here. If anyone should have noticed anything suspicious it should have been you lot." He shook his hand in frustration. "I'm done talking to you until tomorrow. Right now, the only thing I can think about is my family and the fact my sister-in-law could be dead right now. Your priorities are not mine. Not right now." James left no time for the Detective to argue and instead made his was to the casino office so he could call the hospital for an update.

James eventually found Ryan in a more secluded area of the building. It was clear the evening's events had taken its toll on the man and it was a familiar feeling. "Mate, how are you getting on? You good?" he asked him. James' expression would show he was asking on a personal level more than as his boss. He let out a deep breath. "I just spoke with the hospital and Sinead's in a stable condition. It sounds like she'll need time to recover and potentially have some more treatment, but she's going to pull through. She's a fighter," he assured him, feeling a sense of relief himself. "I gotta admit. She had me seriously worried. Had us all panicked, really."

Upon arriving at the said suite that Kieran was letting her borrow, Blake was relieved. She hoped she hadn't looked too obvious as her eyes scanned everywhere around her as she drove to the suite. If Carter made it seem like she had blown her cover on purpose, which she knew he most likely would, it was best to not go to her own apartment for a few days. Blake couldn't even think of what she was going to do next. The suite was nice and cozy and kept tidy. Blake saw all the light colored decor and looked down at her bloodied clothing and skin, her nose scrunched up as she thought how rude it would be of her to get blood on anything in this room, so as inviting as the bed was, she stayed standing as Jackson made his way towards the nightstand. "Very nice, almost sad to ruin it." She said, a mischievous smile forming on her face.

Blake wondered how horrible she looked at the moment, she was sure to have bruises already and the blood was still caked to her face. Looking at Jackson, she couldn't help but compare herself to him in that moment. She really wanted to get out of her clothes. Blake walked towards Jackson slowly, before wrapping her arms around his neck, letting them hang as she looked into his eyes with a smile. "I promise you, the packaging is ruined, but what's underneath it isn't." She winked before looking towards the bathroom. "However, before we break in this suite. I would like to make myself more presentable...first impressions are everything, don't want you to be distracted by the blood on my face and miss out on anything hmmm?" With that, Blake released him and turned towards the bathroom. Her eyes continued to look at him as she tip toed slowly, before she smiled widely and took off without warning towards the bathroom, encouraging him to follow.

***

Blake had just heard the door click open when she paused in her undressing. "What was that?" She asked Jackson with wide eyes, before looking towards the closed bathroom door. Blake turned to search for a gun but realized Jackson had left it on the nightstand. "Shit shit shit!" Blake whispered to him before she moved to stand behind him. "Can you get a look?" She asked him, as he was closest to the door. She tip toed behind him as he went to peak out the door. She leaned against him lightly as he leaned out and looked, but suddenly her foot slipped on the tile and she was sent falling into him, causing Jackson to practically fly out the door. Blake gasped loudly as she fell to. She was terrified up until a familiar voice called out Jackson's name.

The blonde's eyes went wide as she looked up to see Kieran looking rather amused at them. Her eyes then went down to the dress that was currently on the bathroom floor and she gasped, reaching for it, she picked it up quickly and covered herself. Cheeks turning bright pink, Blake stuttered, "H-How nice of you to check on me," But then she furrowed her brows together in confusion, "Wait, you had a feeling we would come here together."

Sinead Callahan

1527036487334-png.443564
Sinead wasn't sure herself why she'd seemed surprised Peter was there. "I don't know..." she said, looking slightly confused. The effects of the mild sedative making her thoughts a little muddled. She quickly blinked as she saw the tears rolling down his cheeks. "Oh, Petey..." She wished she could reach out to give him a tight hug to help him feel better.

Sinead bit her bottom lip when her husband reassured her that she was safe and would recover. Her throat felt so painful and she hated how her voice sounded, so hoarse and broken. It was the same whenever she got sick and had a sore throat; it always made her feel grumpy and annoyed when she couldn't speak or sing in her usual sweet voice. When Peter began to sob, she felt herself become choked up, trying to hold back her own cries and tears. She took comfort in the way he squeezed her hand and then lightly rested his head on her belly. "You couldn't have protected me," she told him, pulling an unhappy face as she once again heard her croaky voice. "I shouldn't drink so much," she observed. She closed her eyes for a moment as she focused on the feel of his skin as he held her hand. She didn't think she'd get to feel that again. When she was back in the casino and being forced to be sick, she couldn't find Peter's hand and that had scared her so much.

"They can all come in. I miss them..." She opened her eyes and smiled when she was told the others were also at the hospital. "Thank you," she said upon hearing Peter wasn't going to leave her. She knew she would rest easier if she wasn't confined to the hospital bed alone. She squeezed his hand when he said James and Lucy could watch the kids. She knew Skye and Shannon would be around too, so was confident the children would be well looked after. "Do our babies know?" she asked. She missed them already and hoped they wouldn't be upset with her for potentially leaving them for so long. She hoped they weren't scared or worried about her not coming home.

Peter suggested trying to get her sent home early so Finn could take care of her instead. "Yes..." she agreed. Her husband knew more than anyone how unsettling she found hospitals. She'd told him about the horrible time she'd spent in the psychiatric hospital and how much it traumatised her. She still felt like the doctors in that place had been scary, abusive and anything but caring.

"I love you too, baby," she replied to him. She then flashed a smile as she waited for him to let the nurse know she wanted more visitors. The nurse would advise Peter she couldn't have too many visitors as once, in case the doctor needed to get in to treat her. Conor would suggest Lucy should join Peter with Sinead first.

"I wasn't checking on you," Kieran said crossly, to get the record straight. "I'm hiding out here from your friends," he pointed slightly accusingly at Jackson, "and your boss and his kin too. You're all driving me up the wall."

He seemed to crumple into the armchair by the window and sighed tiredly, holding his head in his hands. "I didn't have anywhere else to go, so I came here. I figured you two might shack up somewhere else," he leaned back, "sorry about crashing that party."

The young man leaned back and showed the tiredness and haggardness that made him look ten years older. Being a spy was as stressful a job as they come, no doubt, but unlike Blake he wasn't screwing his targets.

rsz_1b4fadf2224bf798e86f07c3fbeca2b8d.jpgJackson smiled as they kissed. "Don't sweat it, love. I was anticipating taking off that dress once you walked out wearin' it." Chucklingly, he lightly bit down on her lower lip. Already shirtless, his hands drifted to his belt. Unfortunately, just as he unbuckled it, they both heard the sound of the hall door creaking open. Literally caught with his pants down, he turned to face the door. As Blake began to panic, he lifted his finger up to his lips and shut off the bathroom lights. Course this had to happen right now. After pressing his ear to the door, he heard Blake's whisper. He lightly nodded his head and gingerly opening up the door ever so slightly. His visible eye immediately shot down to the handgun on the nightstand, knowing he'd never reach it in time. In the cover of darkness, he was confident he could get the jump on their potential attacker. Before he could, however, Blake fell against him and forced him out of the bathroom. After being completely blindsided with Blake on top of him, he was certain they were as good as dead.

Jackson cocked his eyebrow at the familiar voice, at first unsure who it belonged to. Once the lights were thrown on, he looked up to see a surprised Kieran aiming a loaded handgun at them. As the man rolled his eyes and told them that he knew there was a 50/50 chance, Jackson helped Blake up to her feet. "Come for the show then?" Jackson smiled, although positive this wasn't the time for jokes. He looked down to the sheets as Kieran mentioned that they were new. "Ah, we knew that. We were gonna break 'em in for ya'." He also knew that comment wouldn't bode well for him, but he just couldn't help himself.

His eyes followed the man as he collapsed onto the armchair. "Alright, mate. I guess it makes more sense for her to stay at the Porters anyways." He looked to Blake, feeling a bit guilty for giving the clearly exhausted man a hard time. Looking back to Kieran, his expression was far more serious. "We should get breakfast tomorrow, if you’re up for it. Got a lot to discuss." Suddenly realizing how bare he was, he raised his arms slightly. "Nothing to do with this," He assured him.

After getting dressed back up and giving Kieran a final goodbye, he escorted Blake back to the car. She may have had ties to the IWU, but right now the Porter mansion would be the safest place for her.

Emery Callahan

1527040027108-png.443587

The concentration on Emery's face as she listened to Nikolai was quite intense. Definitely at a deeper level than one would expect from such an energetic and chatty child. The truth was, Emery was very perceptive and always listened to what people were saying to her, even if she didn't show it or chose to ignore certain parts. She quickly nodded her head upon hearing she was better at sticking up for herself than Conor was. "You don't know, but when you're little, you gotta show people they can't boss you." She figured Nikolai had never been little as he was pretty tall right now.

When the Russian explained about protecting his status and exercising power, she mostly understood what he was saying. She figured he was a 'big boss' like her Uncle James was. When one of the men called out to Nikolai, Emery frowned. "Rude! Your friend shouldn't interrupt people when they're talking. Tell him I said so, 'cos he needs to learn that."

Nikolai went on to tell her never to forget who she is, even if bad things happen to her, and she wearily smiled. She wondered if he meant the bad things like Michelle's auntie dying. She opened her mouth in awe as the man placed the necklace into her hand. "Woah, thanks!" she told him. "I won't forget." She closely inspected the pendant as she ran her petite index finger across the stone. "Okay. We can then do business right here," she agreed, referring to the spot he'd earlier told her he often discussed matters with James in. "Bye bye, Mr. Nickle-eye!" she said, quickly waving as he walked away. She then concentrated on fixing the necklace around her own neck before looking back to the Porters' house. "Oh, boo! I gotta make sure the doggies are behaving," she muttered before running back to the house.

Conor Sullivan

When the doctor had given the news about Sinead, Conor gave Peter a firm hug. He was beyond happy and relieved for Sinead, Peter, as well as the children. When Peter went straight to see Sinead, Conor gave Lucy a long and tight hug, knowing the both of them had been suffering the same turmoil for their sister and were now experiencing the same sense of relief. He sat himself to Lucy's side, with Alex at her other side of her. They waited a while longer before they were told Lucy could also go see their sister. "Tell Tinkerbell we're rooting for her and love her to bits," he asked.

With it just being the two of them, Conor scooted next to Alex and placed his arm around her, pulling her in close. "Thank you, Alex. For everything. Driving me here, reassuring me, helping Luce..." He kissed the top of her head. "I'm sorry our night didn't go as planned, but I'm glad you were with me to keep me sane." He stared towards the wall for a time and exhaled deeply. "I really thought we'd lost her. My heart is still trying to slow itself down now." He rubbed her shoulder. "Those bastards still have to pay for this. I want them to suffer."

tuxedo.jpgBy the time James found Ryan, he'd had tentatively reigned in his emotional outbreak. While he'd looked a right mess, Ryan was able to quickly wipe most of it away when he noticed James. When he tried to move his body to stand, Ryan found that he was more drained than he initially thought. He cracked a bleak smile at James. "Yeah. It's just been one of those weeks, a little too eventful. Know what I'm saying? To be honest though, killing the bastard responsible for this shitfest would do me and the world some good. I also want to punch Conor in his wenching face, but I think whiskey will have to do for now." Ryan had not meant to blurt out his animosity for Conor, but he was too mentally and emotionally fatigued to exercise tact.

Ryan was glad to hear that Sinead would recover and an exhausted chuckle escaped his throat to show his relief. "It's good to know that she'll be alright. We'd be all the lesser for it if we'd lost her." He flashed a tired yet cheeky grin at James. Ryan was elated and while he still felt sluggish, the news raised his mood considerably. Making his way towards one of the nearby doors, gestured for James to join him. "Well, let's finish up here. I'm sure everyone else wants to go home as well. Beside, I'm curious as to how much whiskey I can drink before the police decide to pack it in." He paused for second to rethink his last statement. "Unless you'd rather go see Sinead now and I'll tidy up here."

Alexander Quinn Armstrong
Opry Tux.jpgThe family dinner had been going as expected, at least Quinn thought so. His sister and father had not gotten broached any uncomfortable subjects that he or his mother would need to defuse and it was making out to be a peaceful evening. As their father was politely putting a hamper on his sister's plans for the weekend, Quinn almost second guessed the information that he'd collected over the past couple of days. This thought was interrupted when his father excused himself from the table to speak with Carter, an associate from the IWU. Quinn had met the man a couple of times in passing and something about the man had always sent a chill down his spine.

Shaking the unpleasant image of carter from his mind, Quinn turned his attention to his sister. "Don't worry, Lily. I may be able to cover your shift on Saturday. As long as it's fine you, mother. He smiled at his mother charmingly. Quinn wasn't as skilled as his sister when it came to baking but his ability to make the common stock items was passable. Besides, he was generally able to entertain customers if their orders were delayed. He returned his attention back to his sister and Quinn's smile turned impish. "Of course, father has a point about studying. You ought to at least set aside a little bit of your busy schedule for it. If nothing else but to avoid the 'living to your full potential' discussion with him." Grace is a clever girl. Quinn knew that, but she lacked a certain focus and he'd liked to give her grief about it occasionally.

Quinn's curiosity finally bit him when he scanned for where exactly his father had gone. It didn't take long to spot his father's face. It bothered him that he'd left the table when he was so adamant about taking the family out for dinner and even dismissed someone who had tried to talk business with him when they arrived. What could be so important? Why couldn't it have waited? And with that skeezeball of all people. His father was acting peculiar and Quinn wasn't sure if this was a recent thing or if his father had always been like this and he'd only recently noticed. "Excuse me, I shall return shortly." Quinn removed the cloth napkin from his lap and set it on the table before turning directly towards where his father was sitting and, with practiced grace, moved towards the table his father and greasy cohort had occupied.

beautiful-hayden-christensen-photoshoot-hayden-hayden-christensen-photoshoot.jpg
Lucy held her brother tightly when Peter went back to see Sinead, the relief that was felt inside of her was enough to make her cry. Tears brimmed her eyes and spilled over as she buried her face in Conor's shoulder, wishing James was with her as well. Once she contained her tears, Lucy sat back down and Conor and Alex sat on both sides of her. The blonde couldn't help her emotions, they were all over the place and at the moment she just felt like one giant tear drop just waiting to fall. She was saved from having a nervous break down when the nurses allowed Lucy to head back. "I will." She said, her voice thick with emotion as the nurses lead her throat the halls. Lucy wasn't one for hospitals either, the white one white was tacky for one thing and she had been in one too many times for her liking. If by some miracle, the procedure works and she becomes pregnant, Lucy knew she would have to tough it up for check ups and such, but delivering, she saw no need to be in a hospital for that. She didn't want to bring a child into a place she absolutely hated. The blonde found herself thinking way to far ahead, getting her hopes up about finding positive results at some point. She couldn't think on the subject any longer as the nurse opened the door to Sinny's room.

Stepping inside, she let the nurse shut the door behind her before staring at her sister a moment. Her heart crashed repeatedly inside her chest as she confirmed with herself that her sister was alive. A hand was placed over her mouth as tears began to form again, stinging her eyes. She let out a muffled sob before quickly rushing over to give her sister a light hug. "I'm so glad you are okay!! We thought we were going to lose you!" She said through her tears. "What was I gonna do without my baby sister?" She asked Sinead before moving to hug her again, being gentle with her. Placing a kiss on her cheek, Lucy sniffled and looked towards the monitors. She wasn't 100% sure of what she was looking bt but nothing was repeatedly beeping...so she was sure Sinead was truly fine.

Peter had stepped aside in those moments to let the sister's interact. He watched from afar as he tried to compose himself. Turning towards the wind, he looked out into the dark for a long time, staring at his own reflection. The redness around his eyes, on top of his nose, the lost of color on his skin. He drew out a shaky breath and bowed his head with a huff. His Sinead was safe and sound now, there was nothing to fuss over. Peter wanted to release the anxieties he was having, as they were starting to take control of him. Turning back to the girls a moment, he decided to focus on their conversation, smiling lightly.

James Porter and Sinead Callahan

James knew exactly what Ryan meant when he mentioned it had been an eventful week. "I know what you mean. I'm sorry for dragging you back here, mate. I imagine being here right now is going to make Chicago seem like a holiday camp," he half-joked. "I want those responsible for this dead too. Hopefully before Detective Donnelly manages to engage his brain and figure this whole thing out for himself." James fell silent for a moment as he processed Ryan's minor outburst about wanting to punch Conor. "Have you tried talking to him about this first? Perhaps try to understand the situation? You're entitled to feel this way towards him and I will not tell you to simply accept Conor's relationship. I just wonder if things are beyond resolution?" He let out an exasperated sigh. "If you don't feel there is a chance of that and you do still want to punch him... Any chance you could hold off for a bit? There's a lot for everyone to process and emotions are running high enough. Conor isn't the best at containing his own anger and aggression."

James replaced his seriousness for a warm smile as talk turned to Sinead pulling through. "You're right there. Sinead may be a little sassy, but she's the sweetest and most caring person I know. Since before I was even the head of this family, I watched her diffuse situations simply by reminding people of their humanity and to follow their hearts. If we lost her tonight, I know I for one would have thrown any restraint out of the window. But the fact is, she was still harmed and when innocent people are hurt, none of us can sit back."

James looked around the casino when Ryan mentioned tidying the place up. "You're welcome to stay and tidy up, if you don't mind. Right now, there's only one place I should be and that's at the hospital, with Lucy and the others.

Sinead eyes had fixed on Peter when she felt him let go of her hand, wondering where he was going. But then she realised he'd done so to step aside so Lucy could hug her. She smiled at her sister's embrace and sniffled when her sister said she was glad she was okay. Her eyes teared up again when Lucy asked what she would have done without her. She took great comfort in the warmth of her sister's hug and kiss. "I'm here," she quietly told her, her mouth feeling dry again. "Thank you for helping." She tried to reach her arm out to get her drink, but exhaustedly gave in and let her arm drop onto the bed again. She was sure she would have spilled it down herself anyway. "I know it was gross..." she added, recalling that Lucy had been unfortunate enough to have to force her to be sick. "Love you..." she whispered. Whether or not anyone helped her to drink some of the water, it wasn't long until Sinead found herself fighting the effects of the sedative and the evening's tiring events. For a time, she battled to stay awake and keep her eyes open. "No candy... Tell Emmy no..." she trailed off. Her sentence was cut short when her exhaustion took over and Sinead was soon fast asleep in the hospital bed.

Shortly after Sinead had gone to sleep, the door was carefully opened and James discreetly stepped into the room. He was aware of the visitor limit, but he chose to ignore it and took the opportunity to sneak in when the nurses were preoccupied. He looked to Sinead to see her in an apparent deep sleep. He caught Peter's attention and gave him a friendly hug. "How are you holding up? I'm really sorry, Pete. I wish I'd never let her have my drink," he apologised. He knew he couldn't have predicted it but still felt he should apologise. "Whatever you need, just tell me. You and Tink are my priority right now."

James then focused his attention on Lucy and approached her, bringing her in for a tight embrace. "Luce..." he said, pausing so he could kiss her lips. "Are you okay, love?" He glanced to Sinead again. He'd only really been told she was stable, which had been all the nurse could divulge over the telephone. "Is she going to be okay? Has she said anything? Did the doctor tell you anything?" he asked. He'd seen the state of the Mayor and his instincts were always to expect the worst.

Lucy shook her head slowly as Sinead thanked her for helping her, "Like I would have just stood there and watched you die." She murmured and gently stroked her sister's soft red hair, grabbing the water that her sister had tried to lift and holding it up for her. She managed to help her get a few sips in before placing the glass back on the small table beside the bed. The blonde smiled softly as Sinead told her she loved her, "I love you too." She could see her sister's eyes getting heavy and she knew the sedatives must have been kicking it.Lucy held onto Sinead's hand until she dozed off into a deep sleep. After, she gently released her hand and stood up from her seated position by the bed. Lucy looked over to Peter who looked to be very overwhelmed by everything. Lucy opened her arms to her brother-in-law who took the invitation quickly, sobbing into Lucy's shoulder quietly trying his best not to disturb his sleeping wife.

After a few moments, Peter released Lucy and returned to take his seat beside his wife, making it crystal clear that he would not be moving from that spot until Sinead was cleared to go home. He was just about to ask Lucy about the arrangements for his children when the sound of the door opening to the room caused him to turn his head, his eyes widened slightly in surprise wondering if he had ditched the casino seen to be here for Sinead. Peter stood quickly after James made his way towards him and have him a hug, surprising him once more. Peter shook his head and hugged the man back tightly. "Hanging in there, but please do not apologize for this James...it was not your fault." He said to him honestly. He nodded his head about his offer but kept silent about it for the moment, letting James comfort Lucy.

Lucy fell into her husband's arms weakly but was far too tired to cry anymore. Lucy accepted his kiss with a kiss of her own and offered a very weak smile, "Shaken up..but I'll be okay," Her eyes also looked to Sinead as James did answering his question, "She's going to recover, the doctors want to keep her to run a few more tests but she should be clear to go home soon." Her eyes found Peter as his head suddenly looked to them. "I would like her to be home as soon as possible, they can run the tests but I want them done by tomorrow...being in this place will not be beneficial towards her recovery." Peter looked back to Sinead, "With that being said...Finn can look after her at our home, but the kids might have to stay with you until she's able to be herself again. Is that alright?" His eyes looked worried and Lucy immediately scoffed, "Of course the kids can stay with us. Don't worry about that, just be here with her and we will take care of the rest."

The blonde looked back to James, hoping she hadn't jumped the gun by allowing their nieces and nephew to stay at their home until Sinead was better. "How are you doing? Really?" She asked him after a moment, wondering if he had been freaked out at all about the fact that someone had tried to take his life tonight. She had seen the Mayor, and was so relieved that both her sister and husband had not met the same fate.

Blake Walsh
blake-lively-photoshoot-for-hamptons-magazine-2016-1.jpg
Blake frowned at Kieran as he was quick to tell her that he wasn't there to check on her, she understood his anger, but it made her uncomfortable. She wondered if he would say anything to the rest of the Porters about her working for Jared, her eyes were still practically begging him to not say a damn word. Blake was going to have to come clean eventually, especially if she wanted to be with Jackson. But that was going to prove difficult to do at the moment and she wanted to wait for things to cool down. She knew the kind of man James Porter was and was not looking forward to the conversation she would have to have with him. But she truly needed protection now, and though she didn't deserve it...she would do everything she could before she would give up and let them finish her off.

Blake felt guilty about using the man's generous offer in this way, but she didn't want to be alone tonight and the thought that she was almost completely alone had scared her to no end. The room was secure and with Jackson as extra protection, she would feel safe. But now she knew they were going to have to leave, and being in the Porter house was definitely not going to feel like it use to. "Sorry Kieran." Blake murmured softly before heading to the bathroom with Jackson to change quickly. After saying farewell to Kieran, which consisted of Jackson say goodbye and Blake staying shamefully silent, they headed to the car. Climbing into the passenger seat this time, Blake buckled up before leaning her head against the cool window, still feeling very unsure about where she was now headed.

***

As they drove through the familiar gates of the Porter's huge home, Blake began to become more and more anxious about stepping back inside. She wasn't sure if anyone else had seen them besides Kieran or if he had already informed someone about her statues. Her nerves were going crazy as the Cresta came to a slow stop. Blake stared up at the familiar home before turning to Jackson, "I don't know about this Jackson," She paused, biting her lip lightly,"I'm safe from the IWU here...but if anyone else knows about me, I'm not safe from the Porters." Her eyes found his and they were full of worry.

James watched Peter as he stuck to Sinead's bedside. It was clear to see how much the man loved and doted on his wife. He was certain he'd be the same if it were Lucy in the hospital bed - he wouldn't want to leave her side at all. It was comforting and relieving to know Peter didn't blame him or hold any ill feelings towards him for Sinead being poisoned when the drink was intended for him.

When Lucy told him she was shaken up, James softly rubbed her shoulder to reassure her. He was glad to hear Sinead was going to recover and pending testing, she might be allowed home. When Peter spoke up to maintain he wanted her home and out of the hospital, James nodded his head. He knew how much Sinead hated hospitals and it was a sentiment Lucy shared too. Still, if it wasn't for having Finn in the family, James might have thought twice at the idea of sending Sinead home so soon. Luckily they did have a doctor in the family and he didn't doubt Finn would want to help care for Sinead. Lucy was quick to agree to Peter's request for her and James to look after the three children. Like her, James wouldn't hesitate to look after the Callahans' kids. "Luce is right. You focus on Tinkerbell and we'll look after the children. For as long as you need us to," he echoed Lucy's agreement.

When Lucy asked him how he was doing, James placed his arm around her and lead her over to the window, leaving Peter focused on a sleeping Sinead. He looked to the window, but could mostly only see his and Lucy's reflections in the glass. "I'm fine..." he told her, unable to resist his trademark response to any situation that resulted in pain, injury or potential death to himself. He let out a deep breath before turning to look at her. "I'm pretty shocked, if I'm honest. I think it's still sinking in, really. It was close, Luce. Too close," he quietly told her. "Had the dink been whiskey, vodka... I would have probably downed the whole lot in one go," he admitted. He knew Sinead had only had a couple of sips of the wine, so he knew she was lucky in the sense that anything more than the amount she'd consumed would have most likely killed her. "I saw the state of the Mayor and I know how close I came to that..." It was clear the whole thing was weighing heavy on him.

When James turned to face the window, Lucy's eyes narrowed slightly staring at her husbands reflection as he once again said what he always did during times like this, trying to be the stronger man. Lucy was about to call bullshit when he turned around to look at her, she stood silently and listened as he revealed that he was shocked, mirroring the same feelings she was having. She nodded her head quickly as he said it was too close for him, and she felt the exact same way. He was right if the drink would have been something more along his tastes, her husband wouldn't be here in front of her right now, admitting how shook up he was, admitting that things had gotten far too close. The Sullivan's and the Porters were use to gun fire, explosions that whole lot, not this sneaky poisoning crap.

Lucy took a few steps forward to close the gap between her and her husband before wrapping her arms around him tightly, pressing a kiss to the side of his face gently before pecking his lips. "You are here with us now James, the Mayor is gone, Sinead is going to survive. It was a close call but you once again managed to survive..." Looking over at her sleeping sister she sighed, "You helped my sister live with your quick thinking..." The blonde rubbed the back of his shoulders in comfort as her brows furrowed slightly. "It was way too fucking close. But now we can make sure that it never happens again. We're Porter's remember?" She offered her husband a light smile, "We do the ass kicking around here."

Jared and Grace Armstrong

Grace couldn't help but smile when Quinn offered to cover her shift for her. Surely her father would let her go to the coast now. "Ah, Quinn. Did I ever mention that you're my favourite brother?" she cheekily told him. "The old lady customers are going to love you bagging up their cupcakes. They'll have you married off by the end of the afternoon," she teased him. Her attention was briefly placed on the empty spot where Jared had been sitting. He'd made a big deal about them getting dressed up for dinner and using the evening for family time. Yet they were barely done with the starter and he'd disappeared. She missed the times when he wasn't so engrossed with business. Her attention was brought back to Quinn and she groaned at his comments about her studying. "I can't take qualifications and potential to my grave, so why shouldn't I just have a bit of fun while I can?" she remarked.

*****

Jared raised a very curious eyebrow when Carter elaborated on his comments about Blake. He told him how she'd cried at the attempted assassination and that she was weak, easily swayed. He had to ask himself why she cared so much about the Porters. It wasn't like he had forced her into her duty - she'd willingly chosen to do the job for her unhinged friend, Ciara. Regardless, her loyalty should be to his cause and not the Porters. He was about to press Carter for for more details and what exactly had transpired, but his attention was drawn his approaching son, Quinn. Jared knocked back the rest of his drink before placing the empty glass down on the table. "We'll discuss this further tomorrow, in my office," he told Carter. "We have much to discuss and prepare for," he reminded his right-hand man.

Jared left Carter's table and stopped Quinn in his tracks. "Whilst I know I said no business, I don't appreciate it being interrupted during meetings," he told Quinn. "Unless there's a problem?" he asked, his tone turning to one of concern. "Come on. Let's return to our table. Surely the main course is due to be served by now. I think this place has gone a little downhill lately," he casually told his son, leading him back to the family's table.

Chapter 8: Fresh Challenges - Part 1
Friday 27th November 1959
Morning - Cold, Frosty
********************************
...Two weeks later...
********************************

The Porters House
James Porter

Stephen-Amell-Workout-2.jpgThere was a chill that morning, cold enough for those outside to see the vapour of their own breath in the air. By all accounts, most people would likely leave the house with at least a coat on to keep themselves warm. James' coat wasn't in sight as he worked through his warm-up exercise out in the Porters' back patio garden. Dressed in a t-shirt, jogging pants and trainers, it was almost as if winter wasn't approaching in his world. Still, he was at least wearing fingerless, leather gloves to protect his hands as he pushed through another set of press-ups on the cold patio floor tiles. He tilted his head to the side as he continued with the exercise, allowing an amused smile to cross his face as he saw Braden a few feet away. The boy was dressed in his coat, hat and woolly gloves whilst trying to copy James by doing his own attempts at press-ups.

Since Sinead had been poisoned and Peter was focusing a lot of time to helping his wife recover, the three Callahan children had been staying with the Porters. Ever since that day, James had made a point of getting back into his strict exercise regime, which was his way of regaining control and ensuring he was prepared for whatever was thrown at the family next. Unless Peter had been over to spend some time with the kids, Braden seemed to have taken a shine to both James and some of his closest gang members. A week ago, the boy had seen James working out and had been joining him every morning since. James thought it was adorable and it reminded him of his three kids, who had been around Braden's age when they were adopted.

levi-miller-101667-C.jpgJames stood up and gave himself a breather from the exercises. He and Lucy had both agreed that their kids should be trained, so James had asked Syd to join him when he was ready to work out with him. The man looked to his watch, expecting his son would join in any minute if he intended to do so. His attention was briefly pulled away when Braden asked if he could teach him to fight too. "No can do, mate. Your folks would yell at me if I did that," he assured him, chuckling at the question. He then ruffled the boy's hair before pointing back into the house. "Go on back inside, Brady. Have a rest," he kindly suggested. The boy reluctantly agreed and returned in the house. James, meanwhile, continued on with his warm-ups, buying a little more time for Syd to join him.

Though she had been upset to hear her mum was sick, Emery soon came around and bounced back to her high spirits. In a way, she was as resilient as Sinead was, able to bounce back from hard times. She'd enjoyed the 'extended sleepover' and the fact Lucy wasn't so strict on the 'no sweets' policy. Savannah hadn't been as accepting of the situation. When she'd been told Sinead was sick in hospital and then overheard the adults taking about her being poisoned, it had upset the child. Savannah had been very quiet and kept to herself, barely speaking with those around her. One of her biggest fears was losing Sinead or Peter, just like she'd lost Angel and Michelle had lost Fallon. She was starting to worry her mother wouldn't want her to go back home or wouldn't be able to care for her if she did. Due to her shrinking into herself, she'd perhaps proved the most difficult for Lucy and James, being that they were unable to do anything to evoke a smile, enjoyment or conversation from her. This morning, however, Savannah sought out Lucy and when she found her aunt, she gave her a tight, unexpected hug. "Can we do some baking or play a game?" she softly asked Lucy, clearly still a little overwhelmed.

The Callahans House

Sinead Callahan

ss.pngSinead repeatedly gasped for air. Her throat felt like it was rapidly tightening up and her chest was caving in on itself. She tried to call for help, but her throat burned so much that she could only let out a pained yelp. She couldn't breathe and the world around her seemed to be fading to black as even her vision seemed to shutdown on her. She was sure this was it. This time she was dying. With another sudden gasp and a jolt, Sinead woke up from her nightmare. Her arm had reflexively lashed out, knocking the plastic beaker and its contents onto the floor.

Much to Sinead's anxiety, she had been forced to spend the first four days of her recovery in hospital before she was finally permitted to be discharged, on the condition that Finn took care of her. Tests, injections, medicines and observations had fallen onto Finn's shoulder, for which Sinead was truly grateful. It also helped that he was a sweet and fun person to have looking out for her. Between Peter and her cousin, Sinead felt safe and hopeful. It was when she was alone that she lost her faith.

"Finn? Petey?" Sinead tried to call out, her voice still quite hoarse along with the sore and gritty feeling in her throat. She was aware she hadn't left her bedroom and the en suite since she came home nearly two weeks ago. She had barely had any energy to hug her own children. Though she still felt like she'd been hit by a truck, she hoped today she could leave her room for a bit and get some fresh air, before she went crazy. "Would this weakling be able to go out for some air? I'm going stir crazy and I miss my babies," she asked whoever could hear her.

The Armstrong House
Jared and Grace Armstrong

1527301145571.pngFollowing the Mayor's death, an interim had been appointed until an emergency special election could be held in January. It was only a day ago that everything was finalised and Jared informed Faye, Quinn and Grace that he was running in the Mayoral Election. Whilst it may have come as a surprise, it had really been something in the making for some time. The charity work, the businesses, not to mention the support of the working class. There was much Jared had done that had been calculated and with purpose. The city would wake up to the news of Jared presenting himself as another contender to the popular candidate - Phillip Morris, the Garda Commissioner. Morris had a campaign parade planned for that afternoon and if Jared had his way, the whole thing would be a disaster.

Jared closed the newspaper and set it down on the dining room table before taking a sip of his coffee. "How are you doing this morning?" he asked Faye, sending her a flirty smile. He sat forward and allowed his gaze to linger on her pretty face for a time. "I think 'Mayoress' would look good on you, my love," he assured her.

1527303369794.pngJared sat back in his seat and waited for Quinn to show his face. He'd had the feeling his son had something he needed to get off his chest and he wondered if today would be the day Quinn would decide to speak up. He was practically willing it. He was certainly curious as to how the teenager felt about him running in the election. Grace's response had been a mixed one, both excited at the prospect whilst disappointed it would mean business would take up even more of his time. She also figured it meant she had to be on her best behaviour so as to not embarrass or belittle her father's campaign. She eventually showed her face in the dinning room and made herself a bowl of cereal. She hoped she would get the chance to speak with her mother today.

Conor had been trying to distract himself over the last couple of weeks. The thought of losing his sister had weighed heavy on his mind and he couldn't get the image of her that night out of his head. Having Michelle and the other kids around the place had certainly helped distract him. Emery had kept him on his toes and was being as bossy as ever with him, which secretly amused him if he was being honest. This morning she'd asked him to help her make pancakes and she was being super bossy about that too. Once they'd finished, the child demanded her uncle told her friend Jackson to have some of their pancakes.

As instructed by his new, teeny tiny boss, Conor headed upstairs to inform the man of the delightful pancakes awaiting him. Plus, it would be funny waking the guy up, especially when he himself had managed to get up early, for a change. He would be sure to rub that fact in, after months of everyone calling Conor lazy for sleeping in late. "Jackson, mate..." Conor said, as he opened the door to the guy's room. "Emmy and I made pancakes, and the adorable little madam said you have to---"

During the summer months, Syd liked rely on the early morning sunlight to wake him up as it poured through his curtainless bedroom window. Allowing some aspect of his life to be governed by nature rather than mob politics was therapeutic to him in a way he couldn't explain. As winter drew nearer however, and the days got shorter, it became easier to accidentally sleep in.

That November morning wasn't a particularly sunny one, which didn't help, and so when Syd drew himself out of bed and went to the window to check the weather he was surprised to see that his father already had company. He laughed at the sight of his younger cousin doing push ups in his thick winter coat, and despite noticing frost on the ground he quickly pulled on a t-shirt and gym shorts before running downstairs to save his father waiting any longer.

"Secretly training Brady too?" Syd called out, uncontrollable excitement showing in his smile as he approached James. "I don't reckon Sinead will be too pleased."

Syd stretched and shook himself against the cold November air before positioning himself beside his father and joining in the rhythm of his push ups.
