Kieran Joyce
Kieran always tended to take his smoking outside, even though it was not considered impolite in his family to smoke in the living room, or even in the kitchen, he realized that some people didn't care for the smell and he wanted to be respectful. The family was interesting to Kieran. Many of the relations seemed to be adopted or honorary and the omnipresence of family friends gave the house a very homey feeling. It was a family cobbled together, and that suited Kieran who was lonely as an only child.

Smoke curled around his hat and bombarded the roof of the porch as he walked farther out from the house and towards the small garden, keeping his eyes fixed on the stars and the low Dublin skyline. He walked amidst roses and stopped occasionally to caress the petals of the flowers between his cold-cracked hands. At one point he stopped, knelt, and pulled up a cluster of wild onion that was choking off a budding hydrangea bush.

He finished one cigarette and lit another, and with each puff, to pass the time, he prayed a Hail Mary. Somehow, he felt God had led him to this place and had wanted him to meet these people, as blood soaked as their reputation was. To what end, he could not fathom. Yet.

He dropped his second cigarette after it had burned away to nothing and sat down on a garden bench. His hat fell low over his eyes, and before long he began to fall asleep.

James folded his arms as Jackson reported that everything was done as requested. "I've already had the cops on the phone about the shops, so that seems to have done its job. Was Tommy okay with it all?" he asked. It was also good to hear they'd dealt with the Ballymun brothers and hopefully they'd fall into line now. With the news that Alec had been taken care of, he gave a single nod, but his face didn't give anything away as James himself wasn't about to express pleasure for what had been done.

Upon hearing Jackson say he was surprised that he'd requested such an execution, James turned to pour himself a large drink and knocked it back like it was a glass of water, taking in a deep breath as the alcohol hit the back of his throat. "That's because I'm not him, Jackson. What I asked you to do to Finnegan is something I'm going to have to learn to accept about myself." James had killed many men in his time, but they had been quick, fair, tidy and as under the radar as possible. The only act which came close to theatrical was slitting Vincenzo Romano's throat at the alter of a church. That was personal and that man had earned his death after causing James and his loved ones lifetimes of suffering. In a roundabout way, he supposed this was personal too. "I'm not proud of it, but it's what had to be done. James reached to the photo frame standing on his desk and turned it so Jackson could see the picture of him with Lucy, Delilah, Mallory and Arlo. "When Nikolai visited today and explained about his lack of money, he made it specifically clear my family was at risk if we didn't start getting more. I'm not excusing it, Jackson, but it had to be done." James picked up the photograph and looked closer at his family. "If it so happens a similar act is unavoidable later, I will do it myself. I won't put you in such an uncomfortable position again."

Jackson fiddled with the glass, slowly nodding his head. James looked like he was almost ashamed of the hit. Alec Finnegan was causing a lot of issues and had to be silenced, but to hang him from his own shop like a Christmas ornament? Disrespecting a corpse like that wasn't the Irish way, or the Porter way for that matter. He knew enough about the Russian Mafia's code to not question James' decisions. When they ask you to do something, you do it. The Irish Mob had honor, morals even. Nothing, absolutely nothing, was above the Russians, though. They'd murder children who hadn't even developed the speaking ability to yell for help. They were animals and Jackson had his own personal feelings about being associated with such vile people. He could see why such a fearless man like James was so afraid.

He looked up as James told him he'd take care of the hit next time. "Nah you're a family man now. You 'ave no business getting your hands dirty like that. Just keep me in the loop... If that Russian bloke is pulling strings, let me know who i'm doin' this for. I'm willing to handle threats to our business, but don't ask me to do what they do. I won't neva' hurt a child, and nor will you." He knew he wasn't the one to call shots, but if James was really shook up about this, who knew what he'd be willing to do for them next? Jackson had to make sure James didn't lose sight of who he was or what he knew was important. He rested his glass on the table and walked over to James. "I'd do a lot for you, mate - just make sure you're acting in the realms of what you're happy wit', not out of fear. Nikolai's a cold bastard and if you let 'im get his grip on ya', he'll make us do a lot worse than whackin' some prick and dangling him in front of his neighbors." He moved the bourbon off the table and filled James' glass back up. "Don't worry too much, though. We did what we needed to do and they'll get their money. Let's just move on and get ready to throw ya' wife a kick-arse party." He could see the worry in his eyes, but biting their nails wasn't going to solve anything. Jackson slapped his glass against James' with a "cheers".

James nodded his head when Jackson reminded him he was a family man. Truth be told, James didn't mind getting his hands dirty and doing jobs himself. He believed that if he was going to tell others to do something, he should be willing to do the same job himself. Every now and again he would do a job, just to remind his employees he wasn't the type to sit back firing out orders. "Mate, I'll make sure to give you the full lowdown beforehand, in the future." When Jackson mentioned them not hurting children, James stood up straight and his expression turned cold, a mixture of shock and offence. "Fucking kidding me? You know I would never stoop that low and I would never ask anyone to do so on my behalf. If I lost my damn mind and so much as suggested such a thing, you have my permission to blown my brains out." James shook his head. "Jesus... This family will never harm a child."

When Jackson filled his glass up, James gladly accepted it. "Thanks, mate," he thanked him, flashing a brief smile. "We've got the message across to everyone, including Nikolai. He'll get the damn money." James smiled as they brought their glasses together on Jackson's mention of the party. "Ah, Lucy's going to have a great party. There's nothing better than having everyone around the house having fun. I've got a little surprise up my sleeve too, though I'm hoping you assholes don't put me off."

A devilish grin crossed his face as he recalled something from his brief conversation with Aliana earlier. "Hey, I think Tommy's trying to get in with Ali. That should be fun to watch tomorrow," he said, grinning. It was all meant in the warmest way. Pretty much every guy in the gang had been embarrassed or teased in some way during their employment. Tommy had so far escaped that kind of initiation.

"Well, I guess you need to relax after the shit I've had you doing today. And I need to spend some time with Lucy, before she starts to forget what I look like." James put his arm around Jackson and patted his shoulder as he lead him out of the office. James stopped in his tracks as he saw Lucy and Mallory speak. He removed his hand from Jackson's shoulder so he could fold his arms across his chest. "Oh, hey there, Mallory," James greeted his daughter, his voice was intentionally over-friendly and patronising. He then cleared his throat to speak in his normal voice and he looked to Lucy with a raised eyebrow. "Did you already speak to her?" he asked his wife. He was wasn't going to completely disregard the fact that Lucy may have already had the conversation he was itching to have with Mallory. Lucy's discipline was just as important as his. They often shared the burden of being the lecturing, mean parents. Only, James seemed to have the edge of being the scary one. "You missed a perfectly good dinner, Mal. Please, enlighten me as to what was so important."

Peter smiled and tried to relax himself now wanting to spend the evening with his beautiful wife and listen to the music they were so very fond of. After a few cocktails for Sinead and a few drinks for himself, his wife had grown a bit tipsy, and it was adorable. "As you wish." He smiled softly to her suggestion of heading home. Peter got to his feet pretty steadily, but Sinead tipped and wobbled a bit, causing the man to reach forward to steady her. Grabbing her arms gently, he kept her upright as she suggested he use his strong arms to pick her up and carry her home. "I would love to carry you home love but I think the car is still waiting for us to be done, I can certainly carry you to the car though." He chuckled with a wink, letting her wave to Wesley on the way out, he chuckled as she made another observation about him. Then as soon as they were out the door, he scooped her up in his arms and carried her to the car waiting in the lot.

Sinead wobbled about as soon as they got home, ready to head to bed as she sat taking her heels off at the bottom of the stairs, but a voice caused Peter to fall behind and look to the lounge. Walking there quickly, his face etched with concern for his daughter as he looked around at the things before him. Peter listened to Savvy explain what happened and Peter felt his heart break for her. Peter let out a soft sigh before moving to sit down beside Savannah, careful not to step on or touch any of the pictures. Without a word, he pulled the girl into his lap and held her much like he did when she was just a baby. Rocking her back and forth, he spoke into her hair. "Why wouldn't I want you here? You are just as much my family as Brady and Emmy. I raised you little girl. He reminded her before continuing on, "Aunt Lucy and Uncle James aren't Delilah, Mallory or Arlo's real parents and yet, they still call them mom and dad. Being family isn't always defined by blood and your brother should know better than that because his cousin's aren't blood related to him either." Peter eyed the picture of Angel, the once jealous feelings that would boil over were extinguished at the moment, knowing his daughter needed him now more than ever. "I know I can never replace your actual father, but I will always see you as my daughter and nothing else. I love you Princess, remember that okay? And so does Brady and Emmy, they are just a bit too young still to fully understand things like this. But as a big sister, its your responsibility to remember that they are still young, and they love you."

Lucy listened to the excuse her daughter gave her and wondered if that would hold up in the court of James, probably not, however, Lucy knew what it was like to be young and reckless and have a father who went out of his way to make sure you were safe. Lucy would try to ease the blow for her daughter, only if James needed to be calmed. A smirk formed on her lips at the mention of Mal avoiding her father till her birthday tomorrow, using it as a tool to aid her in lessening the blow. "I'm not sure it will be-" James' voice cut her off and Lucy offered a faint smile of apology her way, knowing that she was most likely in for an earful now. Lucy turned to smile beautifully at her husband and nodded her head when he asked if she spoke with her. "Spoken to." She sighed softly before James asked where Mal had been. Lucy cleared her throat and decided to speak for her daughter.

"She was out studying with her friends and lost track of time..." Lucy explained to James as she moved to stand beside him, her arm wrapped around his back lightly, hoping her touch would keep him from snapping at Mallory to much. Being on the receiving end of an interrogation with James was nerve wracking especially since Mallory was guilty of something. "I still think you could have at least called, but clearly no one can pick up a phone anymore." Lucy grumbled, thinking back to how Conor didn't call her either. From the corner of her eye, Lucy spotted Jackson and wondered if he found her lecturing her daughter just as funny as lecturing Conor; not that she cared, she knew she could handle herself just fine. She offered him a small glare and would leave him wondering what it was for as she turned back to Mallory.

When Peter sat next to her and then pulled her on his lap, Savvy let him rock her and comfort her in her time of need. She sniffled again as he reassured her that she was as much a part of the family as her siblings were. She very lightly nodded her head as he told her he'd raised her. Peter had always been around in her life, which is why it had upset her so much to hear Braden tell her she couldn't have Peter as her dad. She wasn't overly happy with Braden, but when she was reminded she was older than her siblings, she let out a relenting sigh. "I'll try not to listen to him next time. I just wish Emmy wouldn't touch my things - she has lots of things already." Savvy wrapped her arms around Peter and snuggled up to him for a moment. "I love you, daddy," she told him. After a time, she pulled away and smiled at him. "I just wiped my tears on your jacket," she admitted. Aware is was past her bedtime, she began collecting the photographs together and placing them back in the box so she could take them back to her room. After hearing a thud from room above, Savvy snickered and looked to Peter. "Mummy's drunk, isn't she? I'm soooo telling Conor she came home drunk!" she joked, thinking of all of the times Sinead told Conor off for it.

ezgif-1-8b73398649.gifAfter putting Savvy to bed, Peter would retreat to the master bedroom to find Sinead wasn't there. She was still pottering around in the en-suite. When she eventually emerged from the bathroom, she mucked around a little in her drunken state, happily singing and dancing. She eventually climbed onto the bed and practically sank into the mattress, face-first into the pillow. "Tell Lucy happy birthda-" her muffled voice was heard, before she fell asleep.

Jackson couldn't help, but smirk when James said he had a surprise for Lucy. He had hoped it was something extraordinarily thoughtful, that way Jackson's meaningful gift would go unnoticed. It wasn't so much that he wanted to impress her or the rest of the family, more so the fact that he cared about Lucy and wanted her to have what he wrapped up, even if he wasn't the one to give it to her. Jackson laughed along with James when he brought up Tommy and Aliana. "Right, hope it doesn't bother the lad when he finds out she use to hop in the sack wit' Conor twice a week." He slammed back the drink and turned it over on the place mat. Business aside, he truly enjoyed the time he spent with the Porter family.

Jackson let James escort him out, laughing along with him until he caught Lucy's serious gaze. He saw Mallory beside her and raised his eyes in a "Uh oh". He quickly stepped aside and allowed the two to discipline their daughter. Despite Jackson cracking up about Lucy getting crossed at Conor, he understood their need to control their child. He decided it wasn't his business and went to move up the stairs, but not before catching Lucy's deathly glare. He put his hands up in a passive manner, insisting that he didn't find it funny. As he turned around, however, a small smirk seared across his lips. He then grabbed his bag and moved it up the stairs.

Mallory looked towards the open door when she heard her father’s voice, she internally groaned as her father appeared and folded his arms over his chest. She had become used to this posture when he was annoyed with her and she knew she was in for it. Mallory put on a sweet smile as he approached them, not missing the apologetic look that her mother sent her. “Hi daddy” she said in a sickingly sweet tone, a small smile played on her lips as she watched her mother and father converse.

She was glad that her mother had her back on this, Mallory’s mind was still swimming with tonight’s events that she didn’t think she would be able to handle her father on her own right now. “I’m really sorry that I didn’t call but I completely forgot about dinner” she explained after her mother mentioned calling. She raised an eyebrow at her phrasing , wondering who else had annoyed her mother today, her money would be on Conor. He was just as often late for dinner as she was these days. She decided it was best not to ask now knowing that her parents would see this as her trying to get them off the subject.
“With Finals coming up soon I just want to be prepared so we were tutoring each other” This wouldn’t be a lie since they were tutoring each other in a sense just not on topics that her parents would be thinking or want to know about.

When Lucy placed her arm around him as she explained where Mallory had been, on the girl's behalf, James couldn't help but think she was trying to soften him up. He wasn't sure if he bought the story, but a mixture of the day's stresses and respecting his wife's judgement meant he wouldn't press the issue... too much. "How can you forget dinner? I mean, it's only been a daily occurrence for most of your life," he said, but allowed a smile to be present on his lips. She was in luck tonight, that was for sure. "If you need money to buy your own books, just let us know, won't you?" James suggested to Mallory, motioning to her empty hands. There was actually a distinct lack of any study materials in sight. "Meanwhile..." he began, placing his arm around Lucy's waist. "I've had a busy day, so I'm retreating to bed. You make sure you get a good night's sleep, Mal, love. We've got a party to enjoy tomorrow!" He discreetly gave Lucy's hip a squeeze, hoping it would let her know he wished for her to join him. "You coming to bed, Lucy?" he asked her.

*****

James let out an exhausted breath as he finally got into bed and sat up beside Lucy. As he thought of the day's events, he placed his arm around her shoulder. This hadn't been the best day and the orders he gave to Jackson hadn't been his proudest moment. "We need to up our game, Lucy. Mal sneaking off out, it just can't happen. Between the Russians and the other gangs, we need to make sure everyone is safe. You know I don't want to have our kids locked away, but we need to do whatever is reasonable to protect them." James kissed Lucy on the top of her head. "I also think I'm going to be in Sinead's bad books soon. I need both Conor and Pete to start pulling their weight again. I need people I can trust working for me and Pete was always someone I could rely on. So there's no nice way of saying it, but Sinead's going to have to just accept it. We've let them both have their house and the jazz club without asking for anything in return, but now I need them to help us out here."

James softly rubbed Lucy's arm and decided to finally ask about Conor. "So, i never got around to asking how your chat with Conor went. Is he going to do us all a favour and sort himself out?" he hopefully asked.

Ali watched as Conor nervously rubbed the back of his neck and replied. Why was he acting as if things were going to change, she wondered. Sure, now there was a kid in his life and the ex back but surely he wouldn’t think about the two of them getting back together right? After all, she didn’t even tell him about the kid until a while later. Of course, that was the selfish part of her that didn’t want to be alone. She spoke her thoughts as she stood up to fill her glass again, making a note to bring a bottle with her tomorrow. “Well, I’m very excited to meet her. Your daughter, I mean. Not the ex.” There was something hidden in the way she said ‘ex’. A slight hint of annoyance, perhaps? Maybe even anger. Regardless, it could still be picked up. “Assuming I can meet her?” She asked not jumping to conclusions. “I’m glad you told me, though. Now I’ll understand better when you’re not in my bed. You’re with your daughter.” She turned and tilted her head, looking at him.

Hearing that everyone wanted him to stop his shenanigans, she nodded. “Of course they do. We all do. Conor, you’re a reckless brute of a man who’s going to get hurt really bad some day.” She said honestly. The words were meant to be harsh, considering she didn’t believe in sugar coating. She rolled her eyes looking at him, drinking from her cup. “I would have said something, but we know you don’t listen to me unless it’s something good.” There were times where she wanted to give him lectures, but she was afraid of what could happen. If she showed she cared too much, she might accidentally fall in love with him. Though, with her thoughts and this knot in her stomach, she wasn’t so sure that she hadn’t already. Finishing the contents of her glass, she stood up again. “But, we should discuss this more tomorrow after the party. Unless you’re coming home with me?” She asked raising an eyebrow. In that moment she wouldn’t mind if he said no, truly just wanting to sleep but would invite him either way.

Mallory listened to her father when he asked how she could forget dinner, but she decided it was probably best not to answer that considering she didn’t actually know how to answer it. The smile on her father’s face was putting her a bit on edge, it was like he had seen through her lie and had the upper hand , she was probably over exaggerating her but her thoughts were confirmed with his next comment. Mallory’s eyes went wide as she looked down at her hands, realizing she didn’t have any books or even a bag with her. She sighed as she looked back at her father with a small smile on her face, she decided not to insult him with any more of a lie “sorry” she said again as she bit her lip. He had completely got her there, but yet he wasn’t giving out. Obviously there was something on his mind and Mal wondered if it was to do with why he was sending that message earlier. She didn’t mention it however knowing that if he found out that she had been there or the fact that she had helped he would probably kill her, tommy and Montag for allowing her to be present, not that they had much of a choice, she had just shown up.

When he mentioned going to bed, Mal nodded her head “yeah I need sleep too, night love you’s” she said before turning away and making her way upstairs. She went into her room and closed the door behind her, turning off the light as she got into bed.

Conor couldn't help but smirk when Ali clarified she was excited to meet Michelle and not Alex. Then it hit him that there was something more serious behind her comment and he immediately straightened his face. He couldn't really be surprised if she'd had some ill feeling towards the whole revelation. The fact he'd felt he owed her an explanation was enough to show he understood that whilst their relationship had just been casual, they still had history together. Conor cared about Ali and he would never have set out to have hurt her. "I don't see a problem with you meeting Michelle. She doesn't know I'm her father, but she will be at the party tomorrow. I'm hoping Savvy will be excited too - she needs friends her own age." Conor knew it didn't help that Sinead refused to let her children attend school, where Savvy would have the chance to make friends.

Conor nodded his head when she mentioned how she'd understand when he was no longer in her bed. He figured casual sex was now also banned under the "responsible Conor" persona he was being persistently told to adopt. When Ali went on to echo his family's sentiments about him being a reckless brute, he nodded his head and forced an unconvincing laugh. He reached out for the bottle and filled his own glass, not even consciously thinking about it. He knocked back the drink faster than alcohol should be consumed. "Ahhh, but good things are always nicer to hear," he reminded her." Conor shrugged his shoulders, only now allowing his tone to reflect his irritation about everyone evaluating him this evening. "I'd listen to the people around me more were they not basically hypocrites. A family makes its money through crime, intimidation and dodgy dealings. Then, the same people have the nerve to judge me for punching guys who deserve it and protecting those being leched over. It's bullshit, if I'm being honest. However, I will reign in my behaviour and I will try to be more responsible, but I'm doing it for Michelle. Not for Crooked Conway, bloody Montag or even James."

He smiled at Ali when she made the comment about him going home with her, but he shook his head. "I'm afraid Lucy's given me my orders and I'm to stay here tonight," he told her. Conor and Ali had never been in any kind of official relationship and weren't exclusive, but he still felt like this was the end of whatever they'd had. "I felt I owed you the truth, Ali. You've been there for me so many times... We can talk more tomorrow, yeah?" he asked her.

Once he'd seen Ali out of the house, Conor retreated to the bedroom that he'd unofficially claimed as his own some years ago. It felt weird going to bed at a normal time and it took him a few hours before finally falling asleep.

Peter smiled softly when Savvy told him she loved him, "I love you too sweet pea." He murmured and kissed the top of her head before bursting out into a fit of laughter over their daughters' impeccable observations. "Just a little tipsy is, you know your mother loves her fruity drinks." He said lightly and smiled happily before helping Savannah upstairs to bed. Once all the children were tucked in, he walked into their master bedroom to find Sinead wasn't there. His brows furrowed together as he thought about where she could have possibly gotten too when she stumbled out of the bathroom. Peter stripped out of his suit and found a pair of pajama pants to tug on before turning as Sinead spoke. She passed out mid-sentence and Peter laughed quietly as he moved to the bathroom to prepare for bed himself.

Once he was all ready for bed, he gently pushed Sinead over, as she somehow managed to flop onto his side before climbing into bed with her. Pulling her close, he smiled softly and neatly his face into the dip of her shoulder, falling asleep just as quickly as she had.

Lucy had also noticed the lack of studying materials that Mallory had in her possession at the moment, but didn't say anything like James had. A small smirk played on her lips, wondering if these kids would catch on sooner rather than later that their father was very intuitive. Lucy smiled softly as her husband announced he was heading off to bed, feeling him squeeze her hip lightly, he asked if she was joining him. Nodding her head, she looked to Mallory before smiling. "Rest up dear, we love you." She murmured to her daughter before following James upstairs.

Lucy was reading a book in bed when James climbed in beside her, setting the book on her nightstand, she cuddled closer to her husband as he wrapped an arm around her shoulder. Lucy nodded her head softly at his words, her bottom lip jutting out into a small pout, thinking about what their children would have to say about that. He also announced that Peter and Conor would have to start pulling their weight around the business again, a small smile showed on Lucy's lips as he mentioned that he might be in Sinead's bad books again. Then the dreaded question about her conversation with Conor arose and she bit her lip nervously.

"Well...its actually quite interesting." It was hard to keep the smile from her face no matter how nervous she was to reveal such news to James. She was sure he would be happy either way but...the initial shock of it all was what would make or break this situation. "I think Conor is going to make a complete turn around...one that he won't fall back from after he does." Lucy tried to think of a way to phrase her words. "Alex Romano has been here from quite some time apparently...and she's got a little one with her." The blonde looked towards her husband, her eyes making it clear that he should know where she was going with this now.

Ali was actually excited to meet his daughter. Mostly because she would be another kid that would find Ali lovely; hopefully. What she wasn't looking forwards to was meeting his ex, which she no doubt would have to do. Really is because of how she had broken her friend, being more protective than the jealous type. She would definitely need to leave herself a note to be on her best behavior. That and to pick her brother up from the train station. Leo would be coming in and she decided she would take Tommy's advice of bringing him to the party.

She wanted to say more on the topic of his recklessness, but decided he had already received enough chastising for one night. All she could do in the moment was shake her head and deeply sigh. Hearing that he wasn't going to come home with her, she shrugged. There was no fret as she would indeed being seeing him in the morning. The party was sure to be very interesting.

As she was led out of the house, she gave him a quick hug and made her way back to her own home. There were a few things she needed to do to get things ready. His room, the bathroom, little things of that nature. But for some reason when her head hit her pillow, she couldn't fall asleep. Her conversation with Conor was bothering her and she didnt know why. It would definitely be a conversation to have with Montag later.

Kieran thought it had been well into the might when he woke up, but a cursory glance at his watch told him he had been asleep a mere ten minutes. With a groan and a groggy yawn, he hoisted himself off the bench and to his feet.

When he slipped back into the house, he found the lounge predictably empty. He gathered his bags and went to find the guest bedroom which James had described to him during their brief conversation. He found the room at the top of the stairs and down the hall, tucked cozily into an alcove against the eaves. It had a small bed and dresser, an old-fashioned radio and a phonograph, and a window on hinges that overlooked the garden. He turned on the lights and disrobed quickly, putting on a set of pajamas and placing the rest of his clothes in the dresser near the bed.

Rolling into bed, the last thought that crossed is mind was the smell of New York in May and the perfume of May Jensen, a girl he had an affection for in high school. He drifted easily off to sleep.

James turned his head with curiosity when Lucy began to explain her conversation with Conor. He noticed the smile on her face and wondered what positive could have possibly been found in such a short amount of time. He was even more curious as to what could be so big that it would make Conor suddenly come good. When Lucy mentioned Alex, James awkwardly bit his lip, not expecting her name to crop up after all of this time. Then when she made it clear Alex had a child, he shrugged his shoulders. It was great she had moved on, if only Conor had too.

However, when Lucy elaborated, James suddenly sat up in shock and twisted his torso so he was looking Lucy in the eyes. She told him Alex and Conor had a child together, that the kid was almost ten years old. At first, he seemed to reflect Lucy's joy as a smile crossed his own lips. He'd grown pretty fond of family over the last decade or so, and any addition was practically a bonus. "Oh god... A miniature version of Conor and Alex? Do you think Kieran is able to perform exorcisms yet?!" he joked. Soon enough, the smile faded to allow the familiar James to resurface. He sat back in bed and put his arm around Lucy again as he began to properly process the news. "Conor had better get his shit together fast, else I'll knock the sense into him. No more fucking about." James nodded his head, still processing things. Recalling his own childhood without his mother, who he didn't meet until his late twenties. "The kid's ten years old? That's ten years of her life without knowing her father," he observed. "Don't get me wrong, I'm glad she'll be in Conor's life now.... but I've got a bone to pick with Alex. She should have told me when she turned up on our doorstep seven years ago."

Chapter 2: Happy Birthday, Mrs Porter
Chapter 2: Happy Birthday, Mrs Porter
Saturday 3rd October 1959
Early evening - Mild, Dry
********************************
The Porter Residence
1. The largest house is where the Porters live. There's lots of guest rooms so family and friends can stay over - there's no better feeling than a house full of friends! There are also a couple of offices/meeting rooms for those all important business meetings. Let's not forget about that indoor swimming pool - the kids love that. There's also access to the rooftops, because everyone loves a good view... In reality, James loves a good vantage point for security purposes.

2. The smaller, but still fantastic, house is where the Callahans live. It's close enough to the safety and warmth of the Porters but gives the Callahans their own living space. There's still room for guests too.

capture-jpg.398765

3. By the main road there's the only two ways vehicles can enter and both have security gates which are kept guarded. Near to the Callahans' place there's a small building which tends to be where the guards can rest whilst remaining "on-call". This lifestyle requires high security and James Porter is a stickler for protecting his family!

4. Cut off from the right corner of the image are the stables, for the family's horses.

When the party guests arrived at the Porters house, they would be lead into the large living room at the back of the house. A whole assortment of snacks and drinks were already set out. James had talked his kids as well as all of the Callahans into helping him set everything up. The room had been decorated in a pretty blue and purple colour scheme. The record player was sounding in the background, though with the piano in the corner of the room, it was likely the musicians of the family and friends would be playing something by the end of the night. James had wanted the present opening to take place at the start, which probably made sense so everyone was free to get drunk or muck around after. What was more curious was that he was intending on saying a few words. James wasn't one for speeches and entertaining, so most would be surprised...
James Porter

1519768883715.pngJames had decided to stay in bed that morning, deciding spending time in bed with Lucy on her birthday was far more important than his usual workout routine. Really, there wasn't even any question about it. The day had been relaxing and though Lucy had opened her cards, James suggested she opened her presents during the party. As the day went on, he regretted that idea as the thought of all of their family and friends watching began to sink in. Business meetings, dealing with the cops and even aggressive rivals were within whatever one might call his comfort zone. Standing up in front of his family, with the likes of Conor and Jackson sat smirking away, was what really made him uncomfortable. Social gatherings were not his comfort zone and they were the occasions where his introverted side crept out.

1519768899184.pngAs the evening approached, James had a shower before he could get himself ready for the party. In the bathroom, he stood drying off with just a towel around waist as he stood facing the mirror, the scars that covered his body reflecting back at him. Permanent marks on his body from the torture he'd survived in jail and the further pain he'd suffered at the hands of his enemies, the likes of Vincenzo Romano. Each scarred gunshot wound told its own story too. A lasting mark on his shoulder from the night Lucy's father had been murdered during his own birthday party. Then there was the the permanent reminder on his lower back of the day he and Lucy were shot by Angel at their own wedding - the day that stole his wife's chance of bearing her own children. He would have taken ten more bullets to stop Lucy from taking just one. Right now, he would live through the pain of all of his scars all over again if it meant ensuring not one member of his family came to harm. No matter how bad he might feel about it, he believed what he asked to be done to Alec Finnegan was what had to be done to regain control and maintain everything the Porters had worked for.

Once he was all dressed up and looking rather handsome, he waited for Lucy to finish getting ready too. She knew him by now to see he was nervous about the evening, but she would also know he wasn't exactly a party animal and it had taken until after they were married for him to feel comfortable dancing in public. "You're going to be spoiled so badly tonight, my queen," he remarked, sending her a playful wink.

When they were both ready, James walked with Lucy downstairs and to the party itself. Upon sighting Mallory, James gave Lucy a kiss and then approached his daughter. He hadn't believed her excuses the previous night, but he just wanted to put it behind them on this occasion so everyone could enjoy the party. "Are you doing alright, kid?" he asked his daughter as he put his arm around her shoulder. "I hope you're in the party spirit, because someone's got to dance tonight so it distracts from the fact I won't be!"

Sinead and Savannah Callahan

1519768914082.pngSinead had woken up with a slight hangover the next morning, not really remembering how she got into bed. Still, she couldn't feel sorry for herself for too long as all three kids were up bright and early, wanting attention from their parents. Emery had told Sinead that Savvy had been yelling at her the night before, but luckily Peter had been present to tell her what had happened before Sinead could tell Savvy off. Sinead asked Peter to speak to Braden and get the boy to apologise for being mean to Savvy.

1519768924866.pngBy the time the evening approached, Sinead was looking forward to going to Lucy's party and having a break from the kids squabbling. She was excited to be getting dressed up for a second night and so put on a cute little orange dress and her usual pair of heels which would no doubt cause her to stumble at least once over the course of the evening. In all of her years of wearing high heeled shoes, she still managed to be clumsy in them.

Once everyone was ready, Sinead, Peter and the kids all headed over to the Porters. Emery asked Peter to carry her into the party, doing her usual thing of being nervous about the potential of there being strangers present. Usually, she would forget all about that after a few minutes and be all over anyone she could find to talk at. And that's exactly what she did... though she rushed off in search of the "doggos".

"Good evening, everyone!" Sinead's sweet voice melodically called out upon entering the Porter house. She had an A3-sized gift bag hooked over her arm but that wouldn't stop her from hugging anyone who might happen to approach her.

Conor Sullivan

1519768939277.pngConor woke up the next morning and had to double-take for a moment as that whole concept was a surprise even to him. Sure, most of the house was probably up and ready, but the fact was, he was awake before noon. After grabbing a bite to eat he went out to check up on his businesses as he wouldn't get the chance later. It was partly to get some air and clear his mind too, as he was feeling quite nervous about what the evening had in store. Alex and Michelle would be there, with the whole family. Ali would be there too and he really hoped everyone could get along. Conor hadn't had chance to talk to Jackson alone, but he hoped he'd get the chance to tell one of his closest friends the truth about Michelle before he ended up finding out himself.

As the family and guests started to enter the party, Conor hovered in the doorway as he kept an eye on those arriving. He was briefly broken out of his thoughts when Savvy rushed over and called out his name just in time for him to place his hands under her armpits and lift her high into the air. Savvy took after her mother in that she had a tiny frame and didn't weigh much at all, so to a muscular man like Conor it was like holding a feather above his head. "Ahhh, I've missed you, Princess Savvy." Conor lowered the child down so he could give her a cuddly Conor hug and a kiss on the cheek. Savvy smiled brightly at her uncle and whispered into his ear that Sinead was drunk the previous night, which made him chuckle to himself. He would make sure to tease his sister about that later. "Your mam's a troublemaker, kiddo. Even I wasn't drunk last night." The welcomed distraction hadn't lasted long enough for Conor's liking as Savvy soon rushed off with Emery to find the Porters' dogs. Conor once again returned to his own thoughts.

Thomas Dempsey

1519768955775.pngTommy had worked until the early hours of the morning and he then crashed in one of the guests rooms, as agreed with James the previous night. He headed home for a few hours before the party and it was during his walk that he found out more information than he wished for. He'd learned of Conway's death and he couldn't help but feel like he'd be robbed. The man had been one of the cops who had covered up his mother's death and then swept the whole case under the carpet when they shot down his father. Conway's was the only name he'd been told of and his only path to vengeance. If he picked up enough confidence, he would demand James gives him another name to focus his attention on.

The other news was that of the murder of Alec Finnegan and the fact his body had then been hung up on display. He didn't doubt it had the desired effect, but he was still quite surprised by the action. He only wished it had been Conway found hanging from the store window. Tommy did have to wonder if Jackson was behind the killing as he'd gone off alone. Or perhaps it was Morgan, the guy who was acting oddly and covered in blood. At least he got Mallory home safely, even if she did end up lying to her parents. Still, he reminded him to start being more vigilant where all of the family was concerned.

With people arriving at the house, Tommy offered to guard the gates and make sure only welcomed guests were granted access. He didn't have long left to work and then he'd be able to join everyone at the party anyway. Honestly, he found himself looking forward to seeing Ali there tonight.

Mallory Porter

Mallory had woken up early that day glad that she had not drank the night before and was now hungover free to help decorate the house for her mother’s party.

Once the room had been tidied and decorated to perfection, Mallory made herself a cup of coffee before retiring to her room to get herself ready for tonight. She always enjoyed a chance to dress up and parties were always the perfect opportunity. Mallory had a shower in her en-suite and dried her hair thankful that her golden locks were naturally straight and so didn’t need much work, all she did was pin the top back behind her head, leaving the rest to fall straight down her back. She sat at her vanity taking her time to do her makeup, once happy with her hair and makeup, Mallory got up and made her way into her wardrobe picking out the white dress that she had bought specifically for tonight.

Mallory, happy with her appearance made her way downstairs and into the lounge, seeing how her parents were still upstairs she made her way over to the cabinet and poured herself a vodka, adding some mixer to it to add to the flavor. She wasn’t a big fan of straight liquor. Mallory turned as her parents arrived in and quickly placed her drink on the table beside her. She smirked when her father said that he wouldn’t be dancing tonight and allowed herself to lean into him when he placed his arm around her. “I’m good” she added with a smile “Ah you have to dance tonight, it’s Mam’s birthday after all” she said a smirk playing on her lips “do you have everything ready?” She asked him quietly, knowing that her father had some surprise up his sleeve for tonight.

At some point in the night, she had finally fallen asleep. When she woke up several hours later, she didn't really feel too good. Not a sickly 'not feeling good' but more of an internal thing. She thought it would go away while she waited for her brothers train, but it didn't. Oh, how she was craving a smoke at the moment, but knew it would make her into a hypocrite. Months ago she had quit and replaced the addiction with someone else; alcohol and food. While you weren't allowed to drink in public places, you were allowed to eat.

It wasn't too much longer before the train pulled into the station. She searched around for her brother and when she didn't see him, she was getting annoyed. Just as she was about to leave, she turned and saw him towering her. She jumped and when she calmed her nerves, she slapped his arm. "You little annoying shit." She couldn't help but smile at him and give him a hug, wrapping her arms around him. He rested his chin on her head and swung her a little. "Oh, I missed you two, little sis." Ali pushed him away and narrowed her eyes, pointing her clutch at him. "Excuse you, I was born first. Just because you're taller doesn't mean I won't kick your arse." She told him.

Most of their day went like this as they got ready for the party. On the way, she started giving him the run-down. "Okay, so it's been like a year since you've been here. Things are still the same. James and Lucy are the king and queen and everyone else is like their bishops, rooks, and pawns." Leo just laughed, shaking his heads. "Do you have to speak in chess?" She just scowled as the cab dropped them off. Getting out, the first thing she noticed was Tommy. Smiling at him, she turned to Leo.

"Leo, this is Thomas. You guys remember each other, right? It's only been a year."

Alexandra and Michelle Romano

Alexandra had received a phone call that morning during her shift in the restaurant from Conor, telling her that Lucy had given the go ahead for them to come. She accepted the invitation and finished her shift before returning home to tell Michelle of the news.

Michelle was beyond excited to hear about the party, she loved parties because with parties there was always sweets and fizzy drinks and games. “There’s going to be a little girl your age there” Alex told her daughter to which Michelle excitedly smiled and nodded for her mother to keep telling her information. “Her name is Savannah and she’s conor’s Niece” Alex told her daughter.
“Mam did you know them in America?” Michelle asked innocently to which Alex bit her lip. “I knew some of them yes” Alex said awkwardly, she couldn’t exactly tell her nine year old daughter what had happened between the two families. “And they’re really excited to meet you so come on let’s get you changed” she said as she took her daughters hand and lead her upstairs so they both could get ready.

Michelle-Season-8-michelle-tanner-38462087-534-412.jpg
Alex has originally put Michelle in a dress but after a few minutes of arguing, she gave in allowing Michelle to instead wear her favorite dungarees. Alex finished her makeup and got changed before getting a cab to bring them to the porter residence.
They managed to quite easily get through security, either they had been warned or the small child with her was enough to make Alex look harmless. While they walked to the door Michelle was bubbling with excitement , Alex on the otherhamd was a ball of nerves, she didn’t know how today would go. The last time she had seen Lucy was at the train station in Chicago, James would probably have a lot to say about how Alex had kept Michelle’s name out of things seven years and who knows what the rest of the Sullivans would think seeing a Romano in their home. Alex sighed pushing back her fear as they reached the door. “Remember be polite and if your told something then listen” she warned her daughter sternly before reaching out and ringing the bell

James thought Mallory looked lovely in the dress she'd bought for the party and he was sure Lucy would appreciate it too. It was no wonder people often thought Mallory was Lucy's biological daughter as the two ladies were similar in various ways. He was aware many fathers would tell their daughters to wear more conservative clothing, but this was a family party and he trusted those present. Besides, he drew the line at being controlling over dictating his children's lives down to their clothing. Curfews, chaperones and other safety measures were his focus right now. If he knew where his kids were then he didn't need to care too much about what they were wearing.

"Of course I will dance with your mother," he gave in, with a smile. He could block everyone else out when he was in just his and Lucy's world anyway. At mention of if he had everything ready, he firmly nodded his head. "Of course. The surprise is all ready. I just have to present the gift to your mother now," he said, his cheeks blushing a little.

Kieran Joyce
Kieran had woken up around 4 AM that morning, probably earlier than most of the household. After showering, he changed into a nice black suit with a double-breasted coat and a grey tie, combing his hair back neatly before plopping his hat down on top where it would stay for the rest of the evening. He descended, had breakfast with some of the "employees" of the family whom he impressed upon with his charm, and called a taxi cab to take him to a car dealership. Using the bit of money he had saved from working as a landscaper during summers off, and of course some from his grandmother and parents, he rented a black Bentley coupe which would serve as his transportation while he was in Ireland. He was still getting used to driving on the left side of the road, but he did like these British automobiles, as they were quite smaller than the typical oversized boat that was an American car.

Rory Finnegan General.JPG
He returned promptly at 11 after eating dinner out and while many of his hosts seemed to be hiding or setting their own affairs in order, he ranged the house talking to any early-arriving guests and lower-level members of the organization. He got a feel for the sort of people that James seemed to associate with, all good people in general, or as good as murderers could be. He rounded up a small group that stuck together after their own belated lunch: himself, a burly guard, and a tall, thin book-keeper or clerk of some sort. The taller man said he knew piano, so after 1 PM they had enlisted him to practice "For She's a Jolly Good Fellow" and "Auld Lang Syne". The three men were clustered at the piano, wine glasses in their hands and eyes eagerly fixed on the staircase. When Lucy and James appeared, Kieran gave the go ahead and the piano came to life along with the voices of the three men.

"For she's a jolly good fellow!
For she's a jolly good fellow!
For she's a jolly good fellow!

This nobody can deny, ho-hey!

For she's a jolly good fellow,
Yes! She's a jolly good fellow!
She's a jolly good fellow!

This nobody can deny, hey!"

When they had finished they raised their glasses to the couple in salute.

Lucy Porter

Lucy had awoken to a nice surprise, her husband was actually still in bed with her by the time she was awake. The morning had been spent relaxing and enjoying her time with him before they were forced to get out of bed by the rest of the family waking up and party preparations needing to be done. Lucy had managed to stay out of the way of the party planning, only heading downstairs when she was permitted. Opening cards and such were done during the day and she already enjoyed how much her family cared about her special day, just when she thought she couldn't be spoiled enough, something new was presented to her. Then it was time to prepare for the long night of festivities with her friends and family. Lucy had started with her hair which she curled loosely to hang over her shoulders, her most signature hair style. Make up was done next and she kept it natural aside from her signature red lips that she was also known for. Finally her dress, now being that this was only at the house, many might think her outfit to be too "flashy" or "much" but Lucy was comfortable in outfits that made her stand out from the rest.

She emerged from the bathroom to see James waiting for her, a small smile played on her lips as she took in her husband's appearance. "I may just have to keep you up here now, looking all handsome, as always." She reached out and straightened out his tie lightly before patting his chest lightly and chuckling at his remark about being spoiled badly tonight. The blonde's cheeks turned a bright shade of red, "Oh I look forward to it." She murmured happily, feeling grateful for all the people who were willing to go out of their way to make this day special for her. "Well, I think I covered all the wrinkles I could find....perhaps more will pop up now that I'm 34." She said, her lips forming into a pout. Everyone knew how Lucy felt about becoming another year older, it honestly scared her. Seeing the nervousness in her husband's face and body language, Lucy sent him a reassuring smile. "You are gonna do great, this is all your family too, remember? They love you no matter what."

James lead her downstairs where family and friends had already arrived. The singing and piano playing started a lot earlier than Lucy would have anticipated. She smiled happily and clapped for Kieran and the other's who sang to her. Moving over, she hugged her cousin tightly. "Thank you Kieran, that was lovely!" She exclaimed and let James head over to Mallory who seemed to be following in the footsteps of her mother more and more. People often thought she was her biological daughter and she could see why. She had Lucy's tastes and similar features, her independent attitude...Lucy took in James and Mallory talking for a moment and couldn't help but feel so grateful for them. She loved her family, blood related or not. Lucy greeted the other's and was just about to grab herself a drink when she heard a few knocks on the door.

"I'll get it!" Lucy sang out lightly before moving to the door. Sauntering over to the door, she opened it quickly to reveal Alex Romano and who she could only guess was Michelle. Lucy bit her lip to keep from spilling anything and keeping the tears she knew she would have eventually for her niece. Instead Lucy put on a beautiful smile and opened her arms to Alex. "Well well well, Alex Romano, look who's grown up." She teased lightly and gave the woman a light squeeze, hoping to make her feel welcome into their home. Alex may have been related to the man who sought out to ruin her families life, but Alex had been pulled into it just like the rest of them and she was family now, especially since she was the mother of her niece.

Alexandra and Michelle Romano

Michelle held tightly onto Alexandra’s hand as they waited at the door. “Mam why was there people standing at the gates?” The child asked her looking back towards the men. Alexandra looked back towards them and then looked at Michelle, realizing that Michelle had a completely different upbringing then her and so while Alex was used to seeing this, it was completely new to Michelle. “They’re for security reasons sweetie” she told her not wanting to give too much away. “Why don’t we have them?” Michelle asked again, her eyes still trained on the gates. Alexandra bit her lip as she tried to come up with an answer that would satisfy her daughter “our house isn’t as big” she tried and was glad that Michelle nodded clearly taken with that response. “They won’t hurt you though dear, they’re good guys” she told her daughter to which Michelle smiled and turned around to face the door again. While Alex knew that the men themselves were not necessarily the meaning of the word good, it wasn’t just the easiest way to calm her daughter’s nerves.

Michelle-Season-8-michelle-tanner-38462087-534-412.jpg
Before either could speak again, the door opened to reveal a stunning blonde before them. Alex smiled at Lucy as she returned her hug “happy birthday Lucy, you look wonderful” she told her with a smile before breaking from the hug “and you haven’t aged a day” she added honestly. Alex looked her over with a smile, it had been nearly ten years and the woman hadn’t changed at all, Alex was a little jealous as she took in her appearance. She was pulled from her thoughts when she felt Michelle’s hand squeeze hers, she looked down at her daughter before looking back at Lucy. “This is Michelle, Michelle this is Lucy, Conor’s sister” Alex introduced the two, biting her lip as she left out the Aunt part.

“Hi Lucy and happy birthday” Michelle said with a smile, no shyness to the girl at all as she looked at this woman in front of her. “I like your house and it’s cool that men protect it” she added, trying to get out some of her new found knowledge. Alex shook her head with a smirk on her lips as she listened to her daughter talk to Lucy.
