History:
Tristania was born to two demon parents. Her childhood was relatively uneventful, but she did have trouble adjusting to life after the transition. When supernatural beings became more accepted in the world and she was actually allowed to wonder around, she struggled to cope with the change and did start acting out. At the age of 18 she was sent to a reform school, but they ended up kicking her out of the school because she was too much of a problem child in their eyes. She started teaching herself a bit of magic in order to try and trick her parents into thinking she had changed, but she was using it to cause problems at her new school, but because the school couldn't link it to her they haven't removed her from the student body.

Tristania was known as the trouble maker of her family. She had three older siblings who were star pupils and hadn't been kicked out of any schools, but that was not the case here. Tristania had been to a school before this one, Onotaga Community College, the same school her three older siblings had attended. However, after a few months they kicked her out, stating she was a danger to other students. They recommended that her parents keep her out of the public for awhile in order to teach her a bit of control, and they did try it, but she took to other activities and such things.

So, instead they enrolled her in a more open minded school, Valencia University. It had been a few months and Tristania had learned a few tricks from some witches in the school. They had been teaching her different spells, mostly harmless, but some that could be considered more dangerous. She didn't use too many of the dangerous ones, but she had used them from time to time. It was funny, she listened more to the witches than she did her own parents. It was a shame when you thought about it. Tristania was a demon, and her parents were demons. She never listened to them about anything. She always listened to others, even though they didn't have her best interest at heart.

However, today she was sitting in class, playing with her pencil, not really paying attention to the people around her. Her eyes were focused on the pencil in her hand as she started spinning it in her fingers. "Come on," she whispered as she looked at it and sighed before breaking the pencil. "God damn it." She mumbled before grabbing out a new pencil and repeating the same experiment.

After a three-week delay, he was finally going to be able to begin the semester, his first semester at university. It was such a strange experience being in a terrestrial city, as opposed to the aquatic areas he had long called home. Even as he crossed the campus on his way from the Mystic dorm to the academic area, he could not help but stare at the trees that lined the brick walkways, foliage growing thicker as spring progressed. Various students scurried about as they headed to class or even to the student union building as they tried to catch breakfast before the day began.

He made his way a little more carefully along his way than some of his classmates might have, given that he was still a bit less than proficient at walking. He was not exactly used to using legs but had decided that in order to grow as an individual, he would have to leave his comfort zone. This meant going to a large, terrestrial city on the advice of an upperclassman from his home town. Despite a careful gait, he seemed to be nothing out of the ordinary. Although he had hoped that he would not draw much attention in this new environment, the delay in his enrollment had thwarted that.

He checked his schedule one more time to confirm the building and room number before he pushed open the glass doors and made his way toward the staircase, following the signs to the third floor and then to the classroom indicated on the schedule. When he arrived, it appeared that a majority of the students had already arrived and taken the seats they had established to be their own over the course of the past few weeks. He took an empty one on the side of the room by the window. The idle chatter that occurred before class continued and he heaved a sigh of relief as he took his seat. He hadn't tripped and there were no stares or awkward silences.

Tristania sat in class still spinning her pencil, giving up on the power she was trying to use after one or two more broken pencils. She looked up at the clock and sighed as she threw her head back. There was her chaperone, in order to make sure she went to class and stayed. It was mandated by the school, given her track record as of late. She waved to the tall man who looked pretty beefy, and if you took s closer look you could tell that he was half tiger, or atleast that’s how he appeared. He was a shapeshifter who maintained a constant appearance of half man, half tiger. If you looked at his eyes you could tell, but he didn’t have the fur or anything else really, except the weirdly sharp claws.

Soon though Tristania turned herself to look to the front of the class to the teacher, who had just entered with a stack of books and papers. From the looks of it she was used to carrying this much stuff. Most of the books were for this class, with one or two being for her next class. She took in a deep breath as she knew this class would drag on, it was an hour and a half class after all. This specific class had to do with controlling magic along with other abilities and learning to make your natural abilities meld well with spells you were using.

The teacher pushed her glasses up on her face a bit and looked over the class, taking attendance and then stopping at the new stupid and shook her head. “Good morning class, today we have a new student joining us. Sir, if you would like to introduce yourself and give us a fun fact about you.” She said as she smiled, providing a friendly face among all the faces in the class which had turned to where the teacher pointed, and seemed almost intimidating. Well, almost everyone was looking at the new kid, not Tristania who just kind of stared to the front of the class, just listening. She didn’t particularly care to make friends here after all.

He practically jumped up out of his seat, having the whole class' attention drawn to his seat at the periphery of the room. Although he had expected to do introductions, for some reason it felt much more daunting than what he had pictured in his mind. There were so many curious and scrutinizing pairs of eyes trained on him and he could feel the strength leaving the legs that he was not particularly well-accustomed to as of yet. Although he was more of a country boy, he had at least done his research into fashion and was dressed in a sort of aesthetic casual outfit, a simple T-shirt with a koi in traditional brush style underneath a navy hoodie and black jeans.

"Hello everyone," he began rather awkwardly in a strangely melodic voice. It sounded almost as though he were singing with gracefully executed inflexions that flowed like water down a river that had long ago carved a path through a sturdy mountain. "My name is Noir, and I'm from Lantaile," he continued. While his full name was Noirivinganisveil, that was not the easiest thing to say, so for the sake of anyone who actually wanted to communicate with him, he shortened it. Although he wasn't exactly from Lantaile, the small village of Peraquarie was not particularly well-known so he chose the closest major city. "This is my first year at Valencia University. I hope we will get along well." Although he said that he was from a bigger city, the greeting was customary in smaller cities and rural villages in the siren communities. He hoped that it would simply be passed off as a siren mannerism.

With that, he returned to a seated position. He had already pulled a notebook and pen out of his bag but he hadn't gotten the textbooks required for the class yet. He didn't feel terribly embarrassed by the awkward introduction but at the same time, he didn't want to meet any of the curious gazes either.

The teacher smiled softly and nodded her head, “well welcome to the class Noir, we are glad to finally have you here.” She said before looking at the rest of the class, “now class, if you could open your books to page 394 we will be learning about a more dangerous side of magic, fire.” She said as she looked at the class and then to Tristania, “and Tris, if you could share your book with Noir please.” She said giving the young demon girl a firm look.

Tristania sighed as she rolled her eyes a bit and opened up the book to the page and then looked at the new kid. There was an empty seat between the two of them, luckily. But she wasn’t going to be moving. “Come on,” She said as she sat there and placed the book on the edge of the table, and just looked ahead of her in class.

The teacher pulled down the projector and then waved her hand for it to turn on. An image of the page appeared on the projector screen, otherwise known as a SmartBoard. She picked up a pen from the tray and turned to the class. “So, fire and magic tend to go together quite well. However, without the proper control fire can deconstruct a spell quickly.” She said and then went to the board and underlined a word in the text. “Simply put, when integrating fire into a spell you have to be methodical and do it slowly. If you try to force it who knows what you might do.” She said as she kept facing the board as she highlighted more information on the page projected onto the smartboard.

"Oh, ehm, right," he mumbled before he switched seats. He left his backpack hung under the desk he had just vacated and brought his notebook and pen with him. He would grab it once class ended; there was no sense making more commotion than he had to as he slid into the new seat.

He tried to hide his amazement at this strange technology but there was still a slight sparkle in his eyes as he observed the technologically enhanced board. Where he had come from, there was no such thing, due in part to the fact that they lived underwater and in part to the fact that the spells required to maintain a similar interface were far above any of his teachers' pay grades. Even as he admired the new piece of technology, he still followed the lecture, scrawling the important details in a surprisingly neat hand. It was reminiscent of something out of an antiquated text, back when literature was produced and copied by hand.

It was quite an interesting lecture for him, seeing as fire was the complete opposite of his aquatic nature. He had never even thought of integrating such a thing into any of the spells available to him. He was not even sure whether he would be able to put the content of this course into practice. For now, he would just take notes. He would at least get to apply the theory during the practical classes; although, it was highly likely that he would make a fool of himself in an attempt to go against his nature. It was much easier for seraphim and the like to utilise all the elements in his experience. Sirens, naiads, and dryads were much more limited in their ability to infuse elemental magic into spells.

Integrate fire slowly and methodically, he wrote, following along with the teacher's underlining. It did not really make sense to him as he tried to imaging mixing fire into the spells he knew. He just hoped that he would not make a fool of himself in front of the rest of the class.

The teacher continued on through the lesson and after about 30-45 minutes of lecture she looked at everyone. "Now, I know not many of you are able to use fire as your dominant magical ability, but I would like to demonstrate. Would anyone be willing to volunteer to assist me?" She asked as the teacher dealt primarily with forest magic. She had displayed it many times in class before, but today the lesson was fire, not nature. So, for this particular demonstration she needed someone who was closely attuned to fire magic.

She stood there for about a minute and a half without anyone raising their hands and sighed a bit as she closed her eyes for a moment. This definitely was the tough part of teaching a bunch of children that were, in some way or another, delinquents. Most of them just resisted showing anything, even though she did actually grade based on participation. It didn't stop them though, and while it was annoying she always just ended up picking someone to answer questions, and for this particular example she would have someone help her with this particular demonstration.

She looked around the room carefully, scanning for potentially good helping hands, and honestly the only one she could think of was Tristania. After all, being a demon meant her affinity was with fire magic and she would be a perfect example of what not to do should anything go wrong. However, should she really pick her and put on her the spot? Yes, she should because Tristania had been in this class since the beginning of the semester and demonstrated a vast knowledge, that should would argue rivaled her own, but she didn't ever use it.

"Tristania, if you would approach the desk please." She said and Tristania looked up from her book and sighed as she rolled her eyes and got up reluctantly. "Now, I'm going to cast a spell and I want you to very slowly integrate your fire magic into my spell." She said as she looked at her and Tristania crossed her arms. "I didn't raise my hand to help." She said and the teacher looked at her. "Tris, you are going to help with this demonstration, no questions asked." She said firmly and Tristania rolled her eyes once more, but didn't say anything.

So, like that the teacher started chanting, a simple spell that was used to summon a familiar. "Now, try to influence the familiar to have flames for fur." She instructed and Tristania looked at the teacher and sighed as she looked at the slowly forming familiar and held her hand out. She didn't even any anything or make any funny hand gestures. She held her hand out front of her and as soon as the familiar formed the fur immediately ignited, but the familiar was unaffected. It had worked, her fire magic had successfully integrated with the spell. This was what the teacher was talking about though, the fact that Tristania had the knowledge, just didn't use it responsibly.

As he watched the progression of the spell, he became more disheartened. Watching the ether being morphed from its neutral form into a fire was impressive, to say the least, but he was having difficulty feeling the exact transition from neutral to fire. It felt as though there were no commonalities between the elements he was accustomed to and this one. He had read about infusing lightning with water magic and although it seemed far-fetched, focussing on the natural brute force and flowing aspects of water, he could imagine merging the two concepts, but this would definitely be a huge challenge to overcome.

Perhaps he would find an isolated area on the campus where he could practice without anyone observing his repeated failures. There was bound to be somewhere to practice, right? There were study rooms in the library for academic pursuits, practice rooms for the performance departments, and even facilities for the more athletically inclined. He had not gotten a chance to fully explore the campus, as he had been absent from new student orientation, but he had seen pamphlets about the campus before. From the literature distributed by the university, he was not aware that the school had a reputation for delinquents. All he had looked for was a university with any sort of scholarship he had a decent likelihood of receiving. As cliche as it seemed, he was a scholarship student at a school for rich delinquents; or at least delinquents from the supernatural side of things.

Noir decided he would try asking his roommate for any location recommendations. His roommate seemed nice enough, a Seraph of similar financial background. He knew more than he let on about the student body but had decided that he did not want to scare the new kid away. If Noir were to leave the university, there was a chance that he would get an unsavoury roommate, something he had experienced during his first year at the institute. The two got along well enough from the start and Noir hoped that things would stay like that. There was a certain level of romanticisation in his head about going to a university far from home.

He did not let his mind wander too far from the lecture and instead focused on feeling the flow of the ether. There had to be some connection he could make in order to channel the incompatible element. His previous education had taught in a more traditional manner than what they might teach in a big city. The theory was based more on a sort of spiritual connection as opposed to hard theory. Although initially, the studying was more difficult, it turned out that for many, learning from the more antiquated curriculum led to more competent and efficient use of magic or at least magic that was closely tied to their own element. There were, of course, those who had a perfectly adequate grasp of their own elements regardless of their educational background and some of those who were incompetent even with the traditional method.

Tristania looked at the familiar for a moment, wondering if it would be okay. It seemed okay after all, not like it was in pain or anything. She then looked at the teacher for a moment. “Does it feel any pain? I mean, this obviously isn’t it’s natural form. So, does it experience any degree of pain?” She asked curiously as she was mean, but she had a soft spot for animals. After all, animals had very minimal defenses of their own when they were tamed. Animals in the wild had more defenses than home animals. So, while she could be mean to other people, she could never harm an animal.

The teacher looked at Tristania, a look of amazement that the girl who had been silent for so long, had finally spoken. No one in this class had heard her voice before. It was sweet and soft, but some how had a bit of an echo behind it like someone else was speaking as well. It was part of her demonic abilities. She could distort her voice to make it sound like someone was speaking behind her when there was in fact not.

“Well, Tris, no the familiar does not feel any pain. Since the fire magic you possess and my summoning spell merged completely, there was no issue. If there had been one issue in merging your fire magic with my summoning spell, then yes the poor thing would be in pain, but I also would have stopped the spell if I suspected at any point that there would have been an issue.” She said smiling as she placed her hand above the flames. “In fact, the flames won’t even burn me because this is my familiar and since the magic and spell were merged successfully, my familiar will not harm me even with her fur on fire.” She said as she smiled softly, “now would you care to try and summon your familiar and let me demonstrate more for the class?” She asked and Tristania looked at her confused.

“My... familiar?” She asked confused and the teacher looked at her for a moment and paused, forgetting that demons didn’t typically summon their familiars at young ages like many magically inclined children. “Alright, well let’s try summoning yours for the first time and then we can try merging my magic with your spell.” The teacher said and Tristania nodded her head.

Soon the teachers familiar stepped down from the desk and sat by her side. The teacher smiled to everyone, “alright everyone, it’s not every day you get to watch a familiar be summoned for the first time.” She said clapping her hands together. “Now, Tristania, it’s important that once you summon your familiar you make the pact permanent quick.” She informed and then nodded her head.

Tristania looked at the spell circle on the desk that the teacher had drawn and took in a deep breath, focusing. She said the words that the teacher read to her from the spell book and slowly her familiar started to form. However, unlike the common ones, her’s looked more like a tiger. Though it was still small like a cat, then the teacher nodded her head. “The pact,” she stated and Tristania nodded her head.

“You, my familiar, are to be by my side through peace and war, love and date, never to leave my side. I give you the name, Lyrania.” She said and her and the familiars eyes glowed red for a moment and the tiger stepped down from the desk and roared loudly before growing to its full size and taking it’s place by it’s master.

The class marveled at how big the familiar was, since most of theirs were the size of common house animals. It was very rare that a familiar was the size of a wild animal, but demons were known by few. They usually kept to their own communities and as a result, what seemed so common to Tristania was actually rare for everyone else in the class. The teacher was the only one not too surprised as she had studied with demons for awhile.

The teach smiled softly, “Alright, does anyone have questions?” She inquired as she looked st the class. “It can be about either spell that was just performed or about the lesson itself.” She said as she figured before trying to show them one last example of merging magic she would allow questions. After all, it wasn’t every day that the class got to witness a familiar get summoned for the first time and while many of the students had their familiars, it wasn’t like they were to remember exactly how they obtained theirs since it varies by race and culture.

After everything was said and done the rest of lecture went relatively quickly. Soon the teacher smiled to everyone, “Alright have a nice day class. See you on Tuesday.” She said as she had cancelled class the rest of the week due to personal reasons. So, Tristania picked up her bag and started leaving class with her familiar and baby sitter in tow.

It was all so overwhelming. He had pages of neatly scrawled notes in his book as he quietly closed it. His shoulders rose and fell as he let out an inaudible sigh. It was not an especially common bit of magic to summon a familiar but it was not unheard of in the siren communities either. He wondered whether he would be using a sort of summoning circle like that or perhaps that there was a different way to do things that was more compatible with the traditional style of magic he had learned in school.

First things first, he would have to go and get his book. He was unable to purchase it when he first arrived because all of the books had sold out. In the bookstore, there was not only the material required for the different classes, but there was also an assortment of books that were on related topics but not necessarily assigned by the professors. At the very least, he would leaf through a few of the more basic spellcasting books. Although he had tested into a class for older students, he had not learned the fundamentals in the same way and would need to brush up on the conventional way things were taught in case there were differences in terminology or the like.

He puffed out his cheeks as he gathered up his things and put them back in his bag, a nervous habit of his that he hadn't noticed. He thought about where he would go after this class. The next was an introductory mathematics class and then following it, he had an advanced biology class. He would go to the bookstore during his lunch break and then perhaps explore the campus a tad more in search of a place to practice spellcraft. Campus life looked comfortable enough from what he had seen thus far and he did not suspect any sort of misbehaviour on the part of the student body, having come from a place where almost everyone was well-behaved.

Tristania sighed as she walked out of the building and looked at her schedule for a moment. “I don’t want to go to physics.” She complained and the body guard looked at her with a firm look. “If you do not attend class then you get kicked out of the school. These were the rules agreed upon by your parents and the school.” He said as he walked with her and then looked at the tiger. “Also, shouldn’t you dismiss your familiar?” He asked as he looked at the tiger. It definitely fit the young woman based on everything he knew about her.

Tristania looked at him and then to the tiger next to her and shrugged her shoulders. “I like her... she gets to stay.” She said as she walked towards her next class. After physics she had another science class, then following that was a math class and then her lunch period where she could ignore the world.

“Alright, as you wish ma’am.” The body guard said, knowing better than to challenge her about her decisions. He was here as a body guard for the students more than anything. After all, Tristania’s abilities were very poorly trained and as a result without trying she could harm someone. In her mind it was easier to just let things happen, rather than try to control these abilities. So, as a result she didn’t push herself to actually control her abilities. On top of that she hung out with some people who were pretty dangerous.

Although he had jumped straight into a lab block for his biology course, he had reviewed the coursework he had missed beforehand and the laboratory block was easier than he had expected. Mathematics was a chore but his school had not offered any university-level maths courses, unlike the biology courses. After the morning blocks, he decided to head to the bookstore instead of the canteen. Nerves had suppressed his appetite so he decided to be productive during this free time.

The bookstore was a vast collection of both coursebooks and supplementary material. There were even some items that could be read for pleasure. His gaze ran up and down the spines of books until he found the title he was looking for. It was a rather chunky tome compared to some of the other books he had used, but this was, after all, university. On an adjacent shelf was supplementary material. He found the title that seemed relevant to merging elemental magic into other spells. It was a tad expensive but not terrible.

Once he had finished purchasing the literature, he went out in search of a quiet place where he could test out the spells from class. From the map, he remembered that there was a more isolated pond on the far side of the campus with no nearby academic buildings or dormitories. It was right next to the edge of the school property near a grove of trees. The glassy surface made the serene scenery picturesque, but he wrinkled his nose a little at the slight malevolence that hung in the air, something that was common in the larger cities.

He put his bag down by a nearby tree and rifled through it for a bit before he found the two books he had just purchased. He conjured a podium of water and froze it to rest the books on so he could read them. One book was turned to the page they had been reading in the class and the other was open to a corresponding page in the supplementary book. The theory was, indeed, quite different from what he was taught. He closed his eyes and began a simple spell, outside of his basic control over the form and movement of water. As much as he wanted to lean on just feeling for the flow of the ether, he drew his mind to focus on the theory of magic. It felt so awkward and rigid that he could almost feel the ether shrinking away from him as he cast the magic.
