Realistic or Modern A Daring Dance (Goose x Sammy)

ColdEmergency

Best Goose
The sounds of the game carried far past the schools property. An eruption of cheers joined by the marching band's end game tune, signalling to Aubrey that he had, in fact, missed the entire game.

"Shit-" The brunette began to climb the fence bordering the field. He'd done it before, but this time he had a bigger sense of urgency. He was supposed to meet Ben earlier, but got caught up. His feet quickly scaled the chain-link fence, his hands gripping painfully on the metal. Aubrey got to the top and peered over the crowds. It looked like a massive shit-show to Aubrey, there was garbage everywhere, which he knew if he got detention he'd be cleaning it up. All the students were losing their minds and although Aubrey liked a good party, he couldn't help but want to stay away in favor of keeping his ears safe from blowing an eardrum.

He maneuvered his body so he could swing a leg over, pulling himself to climb back down. Making sure his clothing didn't catch on the fence, he jumped to the grass, landing unsteadily. He turned around, immediately wishing he had tried to find Ben while he had a better view. It was like sifting through a jungle of hormonal teens and teachers that hated him. He cupped his hands, yelling towards the bleachers closest to him.

"Ben! BEN! Benny!" He bellowed, trying to jump to see if he could spot a head of copper hair that he adored so much. "BENNEDICT ARCHERBATCH!" He wailed, knowing how much his best friend hated it. He loved teasing the other, Ben's face got red so easily and Aubrey loved it when he looked like a tomato. He also just liked Ben in general. The way he talked when super excited about something he loved, even if Aubrey had no idea what he was talking about, or the way he seemed to get along with everyone. He loved that Ben still hung out with him, even though he had a ton of friends, even if they didn't have all that much in common. They just clicked.

Aubrey had never felt this way about anyone else.

"Benny~" He called out sweetly, looking around once again. He did a double take when his eyes roamed over a group wearing letterman jacket's. Smiling excitedly, Aubrey tried to get to the group by squeezing in between crowds of people, even getting down on the ground to crawl under their mascot. He came upon the jocks, still crawling, and past right by two sets of legs. He nudged the jean clad legs, forcing his way into the circle of sports players. Once inside, he stood up abruptly, dusting off his knees and smiling awkwardly at the two he'd crawled under.

"Anyone seen Ben?" He tried, pointing finger guns at the various teens. "No? No Ben?" He continued to look over the crowd, feeling very out of place and blind. Where was he?

They won the homecoming game.

It wasn’t very surprising. The team was well-rounded and worked great together, due to the friendship that they had among each other. There were a couple of close calls in the final quarter, but the gap in points was too wide for the opposing team to overcome. Victory was loud and many slaps on shoulders and whoops had been passed around. After the game had been called and farewells had been given to the other team, Bennett rushed to the locker room and changed out of his uniform as quickly as he could.

He saw Aubrey briefly over his teammates crowding around him, a flash of familiar brown hair climbing over the fence. He lost him after he hopped down off of it, but Ben knew that he had missed the entire game. Kind of a disappointment. It was one of the most important games of the school year and he had played really well. Ben wasn’t actively trying to impress any scouts that came to any games, but he played the best that he could in every single one. If he ever was scouted then his parents would be elated and he’d have an easy way to go to college.

Though, to be honest, his parents could afford to send him anywhere he wanted to go. He never understood why they were so obsessed with him playing football, but he liked making them happy. His dad, he knew, played when he was his age, and Ben wondered if his father was just reliving his glory days through his son. It would be funny if he was, because Ben did not think he was very much like his father at all.

He didn’t hear Aubrey call for him as he went to the locker room, and he took off his uniform as quickly as he could. He wanted to go meet up with him and figure out why he’d missed the entire game. And, not even the entire game. The whole pre-game meetup that they had planned. Ben had waited around on the bleachers, playing a game on his phone. Instead of being found by Aubrey, one of his teammates found him and pulled him along to go do some warmups. Ben was worried he might have missed Aubrey earlier. Now, he knew that he had not. And he was kind of annoyed.

Several other of his teammates were either already changed or still lingering on the field in their uniforms. He was pulling his shirt over his head when he sensed a person beside him and he turned just in time to see the arm coming down around him. “Ben!” Conrad, a linebacker and Ben’s table mate in history, wrapped an arm around his neck and was laughing about something. “Dude, come with us to Danny’s party!”

“I can’t,” Ben replied, pushing Conrad’s arm off him. Conrad boo’d loudly as Ben finished pulling his shirt on. “I have something I have to do.” He ran his hand through his hair to keep it off his forehead, then he grabbed his letterman jacket and checked to make sure he had his phone with him. He did. He slammed his locker shut and mostly ignored whatever Conrad was whining about, but then he heard Monroe speaking.

“Do you got a special date planned?”

Monroe was the easiest person to talk to on the team, at least according to Ben. They were in at least one class together every semester since they started high school, and this semester they had English together. They actually talked with each other about loads of other stuff besides class and football. Ben was his friend, and Monroe was his, and they both were not a very big fan of how loud Conrad could be.

“Ooh, a date! With who?” Conrad asked, butting into the conversation, like he always did.

“No one,” Ben grumbled, elbowing Carlos’ side hard. Carlos winced. “It’s just Aubrey. We were supposed to meet up earlier and he stood me up.”

“Aww, a tragedy!” Carlos said, cackling. “Stood up by the idiot!”

“Why do you guys even still talk to each other?” Monroe asked, shooting an annoyed look at Carlos. “Isn’t he kind of dumb? Like, not that,” he said quickly, trying to amend when he saw Ben’s frown. “But, you know. You guys don’t make sense together.”

“Ben doesn’t make sense, Monny,” Carlos said, gesturing to Ben, who was squinting. “He’s a genius but he’s also our beloved quarterback. Tell me how that works.”

“He’s not the only one who’s in AP classes,” Monroe grumbled, rolling his eyes.

Ben copied him and also rolled his eyes, then slung his jacket on and moved toward the door, not bothering to answer. His teammates called their farewells after him and he waved bye to them, then paused once he left the locker room. He took a quick breath.

Okay. Whatever. No one knew about why he was still friends with Aubrey, but no one really needed to know. His teammates knew they were friends since they were kids and that was seriously all they would probably ever know about their relationship. It wasn’t like it was any kind of secret; Ben just didn’t like having to explain why he was friends with whoever he was friends with. He preferred to keep his personal relationships more private than most of his teammates did. It was nothing new, but Conrad was always annoying and still didn’t understand him, even after three years of them knowing each other.

He pulled his beanie out from his back pocket and slid it over his hair, then decided to check his phone to see if Aubrey had texted him at all. Messages from his parents and several other friends, but nothing from the one that he cared the most about. Ugh. He slid his phone back into his pocket and took off across the field, trying to find him among the crowds of students and parents and whoever else had decided to come to the game.

He didn’t have to wander far before he saw a pair of legs sticking out from a crowd of baseball players. They were in their letterman’s and Ben knew Aubrey wouldn’t have paid any attention to the patches on their jackets. His friend probably mistook them for football players, even though most of the football players were now mingling with the crowd or going to Danny’s party.

He considered for a moment leaving Aubrey to fumble with the baseball players. It would be fun to see him realize they were not football players and then try to backtrack and apologize for crawling between their legs. He did seriously consider it, for a solid ten seconds, before he ended up sighing and going over to them. He joined the circle and heard Aubrey asking for him, so he reached forward and grabbed onto his shirt, pulling him out from the other jocks. They all laughed, but Ben ignored them and dragged Aubrey away from them and to an empty spot by the fence surrounding the field nearby.

He let him go and crossed his arms, looking his friend over quickly. Upon seeing nothing immediately wrong with him, he arched an eyebrow expectantly. “And just why, exactly, did you miss my entire game? Where were you?”
