I was wondering what exactly counted as posting. Like, for example, do I have to specifically post an entire thread (such as this one) or does replying on someone else's thread count as a post?

Replying to another's thread counts towards the post count. It's just stuff like PMs and profile messages that don't.

Since they can only be viewed by the site owner, admins, mods, and yourself, they don't count.

Yes, this counts. You can view your post count on your profile (for some reason it's called Messages there, but it's your post count).
