Out of wedlock. And so Petra Novakoviฤ was quickly rushed into marriage with a respected -- and more importantly, equally religious -- Alexei Vasiliev. He agreed to pretend the child was his.
The newly-weds moved to America before the child's birth. And to begin with, life was as much as Valentine could want. Her father was emotionally distant, but as a child, a loving mother was enough. Plus, she was involved in ballet from a young age, like the ballet prodigy her mother was -- and she loved it.
Developing her abilities was the worst thing that could've happened. Her parents grew afraid of their own daughter, and she already knew of their stance against powers -- she was fearful of herself too.
Alexei began to be more active in Valetine's life, taking her to visit someone who claimed to have the solution, proclaiming that with God they'd rid the world of the the demonic powers becoming all too common. Eventually her family was fully merged in with the group, and there she was subjected to various tests and programs. Many of which involved so called 'holy' fire, her life often endangered by them. She had an exorcism performed on her. Twice.
After the second time, Valentine plotted her escape. She was clearly in a cult. And a week later, a few thousand in cash with her, she ran. And she quickly fell into theft and conning, her power suddenly becoming her greatest asset, despite being the largest burden before. Val, as she now went by, or V to associates (if she ever has any), never looked back. Or at least, she says she doesn't.

โ Shapeshifting. Meaning, Val can transform her own body into any appearance she wishes, mimicking that of another is easier, or otherwise she can create a visage of someone who does not exist. She hasn't trained it beyond this. She doesn't know if she's capable of anything beyond human appearances, but some have theorised with a push, the scope of her capabilities will expand.
โ Voice manipulation. A subset of her shapeshifting, considering the ability of speech comes from the voicebox--something she can change. Essentially, she can alter how her voice sounds, finding it easiest to mimic someone else. It doesn't mean she can replicate an accent, that requires more practice.

โ Dance. Not exactly something that comes in handy with her current lifestyle, but the strength and sleekness remains.
โ Lock-picking, safe-cracking. She's able to get out of a tight situation. Handcuffs slide off her wrists as though they were never there, and with a few moment crouched in front of a lock, she'll be able to crack it. And, what's a thief without the ability to crack a safe?
โ Mechanics + Motorcycle. Val's choice of navigation and getting around. She picked up some mechanical tricks and certainly the skills to drive since leaving her family behind.

โ Combat. Val is the type to avoid, deceive and escape, rather than stay and fight. So hand-to-hand combat, and use of weapons and guns is something she's not experienced in.

DEXTER HIRSCHEL
[ works at soft labs / dresses like a hipster / somewhat insensitive ]27 year old dexter hirschel is a chemist and andrew's personal lab guy who he exchanges favours with on regular basis. dexter is responsible for supplying him with the drugs or special bonding compounds for his smoke powers should he need it. though andrew is welcome to swing by for reasons completely unrelated.
while dexter has no powers of his own, he's enthusiastic about supers and crime, something that got him acquainted with andrew in the first place. should andrew actually be charged at any point, dexter would be revealed as an associate who was heavily involved with covering andrew's tail. he's an odd mentor of sorts who gives tips and the first person andrew goes to if he needs practical information or advice.
CONAN BRONTE
[ electricity affinity / puts the 'bro' in bronte ]23 year old conan bronte is andrew's close associate who lives two blocks away from his main apartment. met from criminal connections transferred from washington, conan is much in the same position as val, as his stay in los angeles was because andrew had asked him to come along. he's the brute, the extra security detail, the one andrew calls when he's expecting a fight beyond his limits to break out.
despite his irresponsible and rowdy behaviour, andrew is quite fond of conan, often inviting him for drinks on the weekends. it's implied that they had some sort of connection outside their working relationship but neither of them would really tell. they're beyond that at this point.
