He also enjoys candy, chips, but surprisingly not soda. He's also lactose intolerant, but he still consumes dairy. Augustine Van Allen is a single child to two parents nearly his complete opposite. Lawrence and Imogen Van Allen; Lawrence, a police officer of their local town, and Imogen, a diner owner. Lawrence had a (in Auggie's words) mother load of inheritance from his grandfather, not to mention his parents had very steady jobs, so money was the opposite of a problem for the Van Allen gang. They had a comfortable home and if they needed anything, it was up for grabs without hesitation. Money was in no way an obstacle for the Van Allens. However, in Auggie's eyes, affection was a bit of one. From birth, Lawrence was a busy man. He was always out working, and no matter how respectable his work is, it hurts his wife and son when he's rarely available to them. Imogen, on the other hand, had little dents in her pocket from leaving the diner she worked at to spend more time with her son. Despite Auggie getting the most attention from his mother, the family had three major events every year: a summer camping trip to the lake, a fourth of July barbecue with fireworks, and a New Year's Eve huddle. Despite doing these things, Auggie had his eyes set on other things.
As a child, he had the energy of his mother. He was the apple of her eye, and he looked up to her so much it was absurd. He was a carbon copy of her - the same smile, the same sparkle in his eyes, the same imagination and hope. Then there was his father; stern, serious, blunt. Auggie was nothing like his father, though there was an odd bit of love between them. Perhaps because Lawrence Van Allen showed emotion to no one but his wife and son. He was raised in his mother's diner since she refused to leave him at home with a nanny, and couldn't leave her business entirely. Her son was destined for greatness, a foodie sort of greatness. He would sneak nibbles of food here and there, and frequented it even when he was older.
When hard times came, Auggie fell in love with food. It was what kept him sane. When his family moved neighborhoods, he was forced to attend a different middle school than his friends. Around this age of puberty, Auggie found it insanely hard to make friends. He was scared of rejection which wasn't something he'd felt before. He would instead resort to food and snacks, greasy burgers, fries, hot dogs, candy - you name it, he was stuffing his face with it. Neither of the Van Allen's enjoyed seeing their son go from out with friends to in the house eating and playing video games. So, they signed him up for swimming lessons. Something to get him more involved with others his age and be more active. Luckily, Auggie loved swimming - the rush of the water made him feel happy, and he was encouraged by those he swam with. It was invigorating. And though he wasn't surrounded by hundreds of new friends, he did make a few. Enough to be the kid he used to be.
When high school came, Auggie was known for swimming. He was also known for his comedic remarks - word went around that he was funny, and people enjoyed having him around. Auggie certainly didn't mind the praise or attention, either. He accepted it with open arms. It was also around this time that Auggie became a candy dealer. Not something to go into detail, but he would go to dollar stores and buy discounted candy, then return to school and sell it for about three dollars. People were desperate enough to take it. More importantly, however, Auggie met a new best friend. He went on a stroll through the park, came across a pet adoption event, and saw a puppy with striking blue eyes. He didn't ask his parents, he just went and adopted the dog. Well, he ended up needing them to sign the papers, but they didn't turn him away. He pulled one of those Auggie faces, a little pout and a beg. Lawrence wasn't falling for it, but Imogen couldn't say no. And what Imogen said was final. Auggie named the dog Moonlight, because of his eyes. Though ultimately he nicknamed the good ol' rascal Moonie. From that day, they were inseparable. Auggie would feed Moonie a million treats while he filled himself up with food, and then they'd go on a long run before swim practice. Typically, Moonie went wherever Auggie went (as long as it was allowed). Auggie would take Moonie to the diner sometimes, or to the park, sometimes even to swim practices. Auggie loved Moonie and vice versa. There was no stronger bond.
Now, here's a run down of Augustus' day to day life: Now that he's in high school, his mother regularly goes to work. He has a big house with a nice pool all to himself from the moment he wakes up until nightfall. No one's home except him and Moonie. So, he wakes around five thirty in the morning, makes himself a major breakfast (typically pancakes and sausage), feeds Moonie, and then they go out on a run. Just the two of them trying to work off any potential weight gain. Augustus will get dressed, kiss Moonie farewell, and take his raggedy car off to school. Is he greeted by anyone? Usually one or two people, but no one other than his close friends. He prefers listening to music to get himself relaxed, but once class starts, he starts acting like a clown. He's not a big fan of clowns, but he's certainly the class clown. Making jokes and remarks to get people laughing, though most of the time the jokes are unintentional, and actually genuine thoughts running through his crazy mind. Meanwhile, Moonie is usually at home trying to eat the stash of snacks hidden in his bedroom. Augustus gets through the day selling people candy and taking nibbles of his own private holding from his locker. That's his school day. Then he'll go home, head down to his bedroom in the basement, maybe go for a swim with Moonie and have some snacks, and then go to his mother's diner for a good meal. Swimming practice usually follows school during swim season, but the time flies when he's having fun. Auggie likes watching movies with Moonie before his mom comes back home, and once they start heading to bed, in comes his father. Sometimes Lawrence will come home with donuts for his son, as if to say he's sorry for being gone all the time, but he doesn't want to show him how he feels because affection can be a waste of time and painful. Then hit the replay button for the following day, and the day after that, and the day after that one, and so on.
Auggie's life is clouded with food, his dog, and the people at school who enjoy his personality enough to want to be around him. Auggie wouldn't consider himself popular - he's no football play, for certain. Not a basketball play. Just a swimming foodie with an equally as goofy dog. His mom had trouble getting pregnant with him and the doctor had recommended that after Theo, they stop trying to have another baby, as it would be an extremely high risk that would result in death to either the mother or the baby or both. Theo was dotted on and spoilt from day one, from his parents, his aunts, his uncles, everyone. Despite being raised spoilt, Theo kept a level and humble head, never acting out or becoming entitled.
Immediately, when he was older, Theo took a liking to sports, football being his favourite. His dad would come home after work and they would play a couple games, practising for when he made the team in Elementary school. On weekends, Theo would take swimming lessons down at the local pool for an hour and on Wednesday, at the local sports centre, he would play baseball. Theo grew up active.
Joining Middle School, Theo found out that loving sports equalled popularity, to which he took to like a fish in water. He loved the attention and friends he had, always over at sleepovers or being invited to birthday parties. This, however, started going to his head. He expected to be invited to things and when he wasn't, he dissed the person and made sure everyone turned on them, no matter who it was. This made him slowly become unpopular. As he lost friends, and it wasn't sports season, Theo began to explore the local library, finding mystery novels that became his favourite.
It was in High School that Theo found out about the case of Daphne Blake, when he watched the unsolved crimes on Youtube. It was an enigma, how no one had solved the case, how no one knew what had truly happened. He gained an obsession for it, a case he couldn't put down, a case that took over his mind that summer. However, that summer he realised something; He didn't want a career in sports, he wanted to be an investigative journalist. He wanted to solve mysteries and write about them. He wanted to be just like the Mystery Gang. His parents however, did not want that for him. They wanted him to get football scholarships for college, they wanted him to go professional, unlike his father who never made it to professional.
The pressure from his parents caused Theo to retreat to the novels more, to start trying to solve mysteries (though they never were solved) and start trying to get out of football. This led to a fight between Theo and the Quaterback, which unfortunately for Theo, landed him in detention, along with three others who he knew had nothing to do with the fight.
