BRIEF HISTORY​

aster is the youngest of two children; her sister, jocelyn, is 15 years her senior and, by all accounts, the two of them came from an extremely broken family. their dad was in and out of jail for most of jocelyn's youth. he was released on parole when the eldest of the two sisters was 14, impregnating their mother with their second equally accidental child over a decade after she'd given birth to the first. their mother was in her third trimester of her pregnancy with aster when he was arrested on drug charges on top of violating the terms of his parole, earning him another 25 years behind bars.

unable to afford the exuberant cost of a ride in an ambulance, jocelyn, who was only 15 at the time, was the one who drove their mother to the hospital when she went into labor.

swayed with a naturally addictive personality, their already absent mother turned to drugs to cope with the stress of raising a teenage daughter and a newborn. she was arrested and charged with gross negligence and child endangerment when she was found OD-ing on heroin by her daughter jocelyn after she returned home from school and called the police (aster was six months old at the time and present, unsupervised, in the apartment), the two girls were placed under the temporary custody of child protective services while she underwent trial.

found guilty and sentenced to 10 years with the possibility for parole after serving five of them, their mother was sent to jail and aster and joss were integrated into the foster care system.

jocelyn was sent out on her own when she turned 18, and, desperate to keep what little of her family still remained, put herself through trade school and took on a number of part-time jobs until she'd saved up enough money to afford a two-bedroom apartment. eventually landing a stable, decent-paying job, jocelyn was just shy of 22 and aster six when her motion to take legal custody of her sister was finally approved and she managed to pull her out of the foster system for good.

aster was a troubled child and even despite jocelyn's greatest efforts to give her the best life she possibly could, she grew up aware that their situation was abnormal, resulting in a good deal of internalized anger at the idea that they'd been abandoned by their parents. she refused to apply herself in school; this deeply apathetic attitude regarding her education eventually resulting in her dropping out of school altogether in her junior year of high school despite joss' pleas and empty threats for her to change her mind.

with nothing better to do with her time, aster fell into the wrong crowd and began abusing drugs, seemingly following the path laid out by her parents before her. jocelyn, who was now in her early thirties with a husband and child, and who had seen all of this before, quickly picked up on the signs and pressured aster to get her life together before she found herself in the same situation as their parents.

with the impending threat of being cut contact from her niece and nephew looming over her, aster has managed to ween herself off of drugs and land a stable, low-income job. she doesn't go out as much as she'd like to - her old friend group crawling with bad habits and enablers - and has set her focus on keeping clean, her art, and keeping in touch with her family when those all too familiar temptations begin to rear their ugly head.
