class="tabsContent tabsContent1"][div class=container][div class=textbox]Street lights flickered on one-by-one, illuminating the row of stores and giving the brick road an almost ominous feel. Overhanging the area was a blanket of cirrus clouds that looked like dark strokes against the purple sky. People were walking passed, some holding hands or others holding readymade baskets of candy. The streets of Toronto were beginning to liven up as night began to set and Lyra would be there to witness all of it.

Standing at the window and gazing out and the bustling crowds and couples, Lyra found herself lost in thought. Her hand was moving idly while cleaning the window, honestly smudging the marks instead of getting rid of them. The only times she snapped out of her trance were when people stopped to wave or smile at her, most of them gesturing at her outfit. Of course, she couldn't help but smile back. It was not only part of her job to cater to customers, but it was easier for her to communicate when there was some type of barrier separating her from. Whether it was work, avoidance, or in this case, a glass wall protecting her from the outside world.

"I like your costume!" A little girl exclaimed through the glass, bouncing happily on the balls of her feet.

Lyra let out a gentle laugh and bent down slightly since she wasn't that much taller than the child. "Thank you. I like yours too." They were both, humorously enough, dressed as the same character--Alice from Alice in Wonderland. Unlike the girl, however, Lyra's was a bit more decorative and dark since that was the overall theme of the cafe. The owner wanted to go full out Alice in Wonderland with a darker element.

Watching the girl run off, the quiet ring of bells tore her attention to the front door. She watched the customer walk in and take a seat before wandering over herself with a menu. "Hi, welcome to Cha Cha Latte." The female said as she handle the person their menu.[/div][/div][/div][div

MARIA C.
WITH A FIRE AND THE
POWER AND THE GLORY

God, Maria loathed Halloween. There was something about the exultant children, the bright costumes, the joy, that filled her with a feeling of unfathomable hatred. Well, not hatred exactly, more like jealousy. It was an emotion that burned at the pit of her stomach and made her want to slap the mask off of a trick-or-treater's happy little face. As a child, Maria had never been allowed to celebrate Halloween, no matter how hard she clamoured to dress as a fairy or a princess or whatever took her fancy that year, and join her friends in running around the town.
This was the closest she'd ever gotten. Accompanying a little gaggle of the children from her neighbourhood, none of them older than ten, while their parents stayed home spending their time in a presumably more useful way.
"I don't know why you're so excited about this. It's a silly Pagan holiday." She chastised, drawing a little girl who'd wandered astray back into the clump with one sweep of her arm. Lord, she sounded exactly like her mother. It was true, and that was the precise reason Halloween was off the table for any self respecting Cartwright. In fact, Neil Cartwright had almost had a seizure when a woman had dropped off her son, one of Maria's charges, as the little boy appeared to be dressed as the devil Himself. "Alright, loves, follow me. Let's hit the first house, shall we?"
Bringing up the rear, Maria followed the children up the garden path of a rather pretty redbrick house. No sooner had she set foot on the first tile, a shrill wolf-whistle cut through the air and she whirled around.
"Nice costume, darlin'. Love a schoolgirl."
Disgusted, Maria turned back around to catch up with her group, who were already selecting candy from an offered bowl with ritualistic precision. There was no point in engaging with catcallers, vile little creatures. Her attire was not a costume. White socks, a skirt, a blouse, a cardigan, her crucifix: a respectable, mother-and-father approved outfit. Fucking Halloween.
"Done? Let's keep going then. Come on, don't get left behind, I'm being paid to take you trick-or-treating, not herd you like sheep." Maria's voice, though smooth and melodic, was also painfully authoritative, and the children, bless their hearts, scurried to obey. It was nice to be respected. Perhaps that was why Maria was yearning to become a teacher. She did have a certain soft spot for children, children under twelve, before they became teenagers and lost respect.
As she walked, Maria considered the catcaller's comment. Inappropriate, yes, but it had given her an idea. There was supposed to be a Halloween party in just a couple of hours... Her parents were out for the night, and she did want a little excitement. Perhaps she could alter her current outfit just a little to look more like a costume, and slip into the party. Yes, that could work. With a newfound spring in her step, she ushered her little group up another garden path, and even accepted the offer of a fun-sized Mars bar from a five year old boy with a grateful smile.

The Halloween sun had yet to fully set and yet there were already empty candy wrappers blowing across the leaf-strewn sidewalk. Daphne screwed up her nose in disgust as she kicked a half eaten snickers out of her path. She had made a mistake. It seemed like a nice night so she thought she would walk the long way to the party. But the streets were infested with sickening little snot-nosed children and their inability to pick up after themselves.

She strongly disliked children and couldn’t fathom why anyone would want to have them. It seemed like signing up for years of unnecessary torment. They are disgusting little creatures with grubby little hands covered in germs. Constantly getting sick because they don’t know how to perform a simple function like washing their hands. Sure one could argue that she was a grubby little child once ut that simply wasn’t the case. Daphne had always had strong opinions about hygiene and cleanliness even from a young age.

The female had to quickly jump back off the sidewalk as a child ran barreling through her path. “Horrible little brats” she muttered as she looked down and saw that the heel of her shoe had gotten stuck in a sewer grate. Of course, she would get stuck when she wanted so badly to take refuge off the streets. It was definitely a mistake to not wait until later to head to the party. Bending down she carefully wiggled the heel out of the grate, she did not need a broken heel on top of everything

With a sigh of relief, she stepped back on the street and began to look for a shop that was still open. Daphne could take refuge there until the little sugar-crazed demons had retired for the night. She slyly wiped the dirt off her gloves on the cape of a passing ‘superhero.’ It had chocolate smeared across every inch of its face so she doubted that it would notice a little extra dirt.

As she continued down the sidewalk the streetlamps started to flicker on. It was a good sign as it meant that the children would have to head inside soon and she would be free to wander the streets. Her blue eyes fell on a cafe with its signs still out. Coffee was exactly what she needed to get through the rest of the night. She pushed the door open which caused the bell to jingle slightly, notifying the staff that she had entered. The cafe was decorated like a darker version of Alice and Wonderland for the holiday. The worker girl was dressed as Alice and even Daphne had to admit it looked kinda cute. “Can I get an iced coffee, please?” she said, sliding some cash across the counter as she admired the decorations. “Are you heading to that massive party when you finish up here?”
