[div class="scroll"]It had taken Kai a while to adapt to his new surrounding university. Sure, he had multiple tours of the grounds as his friends from taekwondo. But now he was off on his own… it was… Well, daunting. Not to mention it felt like he was in a completely different world. Having been in America for six months almost wasn’t enough time for him to get over the culture shock. He found himself missing his hometown in Sydney, Australia, quite often. But, I suppose his new friends made it easier for him as they invited him out and taught him the ways of America. He really wished they had taught him how to get his classes on time though. It was his first day and he had been late for the only two classes he had today by at least ten minutes. He was going to blame it on the fact that everything was just so overwhelming. New places, sounds, smells… Not to mention the university system in America was different to how they went about it in Australia. He had been spending all of his last year of high school being caught he needed to get good TEE scores to get into the university of his choice. And then to arrive in America and to try and convert his scores and see what he could or couldn’t do – and having to apply and go to interviews? That didn’t happen in Australia. Luckily, he had managed to get into Murdock University. Why was it a good thing? Well, it was a five-minute skate from his house. And the other reason being it had a great physical education section which Kai thrived on. However, even though he had golds and aspirations of being a physical education and health education teacher, he still had to take the normal base classes like maths, science, English, so on and so forth. And so, he sat in the back of the class (not by his choice, mind you. He had been painfully late after getting lost – again – and the only seats available had been the ones at the back.) and listened carefully to what the professor was talking about. “Now, if you log into your Murdock University apps, you would’ve seen the first assignment which is due 50% of your marks. The assignment is due in week seven and your partners have been selected by random. So, for the remaining half an hour of our session, please come down to the front to find the lists to find your partner. Finally, come and find me and you will pick a script at random from my little bucket here” Professor Pierce announced, shaking the small dark bucket in her hand. “Alright, come on down then.” One by one, people began to leave their seats to inspect the list and find their partners. Kai followed the herd, waiting patiently for his turn while also gazing around himself. Well, this was going to be tricky. He didn’t know anyone in this class. How the heck was he going to find his partner based on just a name? A small frown came to his face at the thought of actually having to interact with people to find his partner. Dear lord, no. Releasing a soft exhale, Kai realized it was his turn in line to check the list. His dark eyes darted over the page, trying to find his name. Ah! There it was. Kai Yang and Bea Callerta. Okay. Beau. So he was with a dude. That’s great. Because he would probably have a heart attack if he was going to have to do this assignment with a girl. He wasn’t the greatest at speaking to those of the opposite sex. However, he could deal with working with a boy. Now… to find that said boy. Moving away from the line, his eyes danced over the crowd to try and find a guy that would resemble a Beau of sorts. Wait a minute; what do Beau’s even look like? Well, the Beau he knew back at home had dirty blonde hair, brown eyes and was super laid back. I suppose that’s what he thought when he thought of the name ‘Beau’. Pursing his lips together, it seemed as if he was going to have to ask someone. Well… great. “Excuse me,” He asked the closest person to him… which happened to be a girl. Yikes. You can do this Kai! Have courage! It’s like talking to Andrew but with boobs.. “I uh… Hi, sorry. I’m… I’m sorta new around here… uhh..” Oh God. Had his Australian accent always been this thick? Now he was listening to it and having it on repeat in his head, he wanted to shove socks in his mouth and never speak ever again. “I um… I got partnered with a Beau? Do you know him by any chance?” God, please say yes and then let me move on to my next life

It was barely even afternoon, and it had already been a long day for Beau.

She had spent the night with Noah — something that always made her day just that much harder — and she looked like a hooligan. Beau’s day started with an alarm. Hers. Noah never set his, but somebody needed to be responsible, right? It was hard enough to force the plush covers off her still-sleeping body, but even harder to wrangle together an outfit that looked decent with Noah’s clothes.

Even worse was the fact that she’d cried off her mascara twice already. It was her fourth year at Murdock, so she had started the year expecting another 50-cred assignment. It seemed that time of year had finally came around, and Beau could only try to ignore the fact that she’d finished with a 74 in English due to the project her sophomore year. It was a bitter memory, but even worse was the way her stomach dropped when the partner list was put up.

The class always seemed to double when it was time to look at the list. The air was filled with anxious chatter as everyone filed into a clump, desperate to find their names and their partners. Beau rose slowly, sticking to the edges of the crowd with her eyes settled down. All of her friends knew they’d be fine anyways — Cassidy was basically a savant, and Maya always seemed to end up with a partner who did all the work for her. But even though Beau wasn’t the best academically, she just couldn’t take credit for somebody else’s work.

She quickly pulled out her phone, opening Murdock’s app and skimming through the assignment. A moment later, she pushed her phone back into her pocket with a gulp. As Beau put her eyes back towards the ground, she felt a warm hand slip into hers. She smiled wanly, stepping forward with him as they slowly got closer and closer to the list.

And before she could know it, Beau was pulled from her reserved bubble. It seemed her partner had found her first. ”Beau? Beau’s right over there.” She looked with a pained expression to see Cassidy pointing at her with a grin. Beau gave a weak wave, her head starting to spin as she tried to weasel out who was asking her the question.

In a moment that felt like an eternity, a small boy emerged from the crowds. Her nervousness was quickly replaced with a tinge of confusion — who was he?

[div class="scroll"]“Beau? Beau’s right over there?” Kai’s dark eyes followed the direction in which the girl was pointing. They finally landed on a girl – who was weakly waving at them? Maybe she was friends with this girl and thought that the girl had been pointing at her? – and the boy who was holding her hand. Okay, so that was Beau. And that must’ve been Beau’s girlfriend. Awesome. He turned to the girl once again, thanking her (in a rather stuttered manner), before making his way towards the couple that had just been pointed out to him. His vision landed on the boy who he assumed was named Beau and all he could think about was how much he looked like your typical teen from school. Kai almost felt a cold chill run down his spine as his mind began to trace the outlines of past memories of high school. School had never been great. Even though he attended Christian private schools, it didn’t mean that everyone was nice or a Christian. In fact, some of them were far worse than the bullies you’d find at any other school. So, looking at ‘Beau’ right now, he was hoping that it wasn’t going to be like high school again. He was hoping that he might be able to make some sort of friendship with him and that the other male wouldn’t make fun of him, or spray paint his bag, or kick him in the nuts every time that he saw him along with yelling racial slurs. They say first impressions mean everything that’s all Kai had to do. He had to make a great first impression and boom! They’d be friends, right? Finally, he stood before the couple. “Uh, hi,” he began awkwardly, giving them both a small bow. Oh, God. Did he seriously just do that?! Spending so much time in the dojo and around his Korean family, he was beginning to forget what it was like to actually interact with someone who wasn’t Asian. Now they were probably going to think that he’s some ultimate Asian nerd and laugh about it to his face. Okay, Kai, calm down. His mind began to try and soothe him. The anxiety was riddling him up inside and he was struggling to keep it calm and relaxed. Just introduce yourself and let’s see what happens. What’s the worst that could go wrong? You say your name wrong and he ends up calling you something completely Asian and you’re too polite to correct him. And then he spends the next seven weeks calling you by this completely random Asian name and when he discovers he’s been saying it wrong the whole time, he confronts you about. And he calls you out and says that you made him look like a racist. Oh, God. For the love of God, Kai. Please, please, do not get your name wrong! “I uh… I’m Kai!” He managed to push out, his gaze fixed on the boy while drifting back and forth to the girl next to him. Thank God he got his name outright. “So uh, you must be… Beau…?” he asked the boy, raising his brow with anticipation to hear the answer. Because if he wasn’t Beau, then he was going to run out into the field with a shovel and bury his grave right now. Someone just needed to help push in the sand afterwards so he could bury himself, please.

beau felt sick to her stomach as the boy got closer and closer. the situation smelled disaster for them both, and she already felt bad for weighing the fresh meat down with her academic inability. he probably had a bright future -- unlike her. after all, she had a reputation. she was a sort of "pretty houseplant": nice and cute to take care of, but dumb and the type to play along. the worst thing about it? it was true.

beau peered at through nervous eyes as he finally came to a stop in front of her. she squeezed noah's hand with a weak smile. beau had decided that she would just let him do the talking and apologize later. "uh... hi?" he offered before... giving a bow? she heard noah snicker quietly and turned back to him with a frown. "noah!" she mouthed, but to her frustration, all he offered her was a blown kiss.

"i uh... i'm kai!" maybe the only good thing about the situation was that kai seemed just as awkward as her. beau rolled the foreign name over her tongue -- it fit nicely. kai. sweet name. unique. at least there was an off chance he'd get her strange name then, too. even the thought sent her cheeks a corally pink. all the name calling, teasing, bitter memories. but back then she didn't have a reputation. beau might've been a pretty houseplant, but right now she'd only focus on the first word. sometimes it was so exhausting though; all everyone thought of her was pretty. and houseplant. she shook her head, trying to clear her racing mind of its rampant thoughts. her new partner was right in front of her, after all.

but as she glanced up and saw him ask for beau, her, while staring at noah, her face dropped. her cheeks rapidly went from a pale coral to ruby red, and she could hear noah hiss his disapproval besides her. "so much for first impressions, right?" he muttered, face dull as he stared down kai. "have a fun time with my girlfriend beau." each word falling from his mouth was bright acid, and she could almost feel it splash onto her, burning her cheeks redder as he sauntered away.

"beau," she offered with a wan smile before motioning to pierce and the huddles of coupled students swarming around her. "we should probably go get our assignment..." beau murmured, her voice trailing off weakly into the air. taking a few steps towards pierce, beau blinked her eyes closed and took a deep breath. if anything, he's the one who should be nervous. i'm someone around here, finally. people know me.

she turned back towards him with a considerably less red face and offered him a bright, real smile. "sorry about that." her voice was quiet in the loud room, but she spoke meaningfully. reaching out a hand to kai, she nodded her head. "beau. and, i guess we're partners?" what did she have to lose? there no way kai could possibly be more embarrassed than her -- there wasn't enough embarassment in the world for that -- but if half her grade was clinging to this working out, she had to at least try.

Beau was a freaking girl. Within a microsecond, Kai felt his face burn furiously. His cheeks a dark shade of cherry as it spread across his tanned, freckled skin. His dark eyes quickly moved from the boy to… well… to Beau. Oh man, he really did screw up, didn’t he? And then Beau started to speak – and Kai was freaking lost for words. It was like someone had come and shoved their hand down his throat, ripping out his words and running off with them. So, what could he do now? Well, nodding and following her would be the first best option, wouldn’t it? So, he did just that. He nodded to Beau’s murmur and followed her towards the teacher. All the sudden, he felt sick to his stomach. His knees felt weak and he wanted to just find somewhere where he could crawl up into a space and well, die. Okay, maybe he was being overdramatic. But not only had he thought Beau was that guy, it turned out to be a girl. Girls were not Kai’s thing. He just… he struggled. Maybe it was because there were only ever two girls he had ever got along within his life apart from his mum and sister. One of them was in high school, and he had a major crush on her. She was super flirty and he actually thought he may have had a chance with her; until she ended up hooking up with one of the guys from the football team and was pregnant by sixteen. Kai spent so much time trying to figure out what he did wrong and how had he read all the signals so wrong? And then the other girl was Sophie, who was a new friend. But she was gay, and literally acted like a guy all the time. So, he didn’t feel threatened by her. But still, it made him wonder why girls (or most people, to be honest) had this sort of hold of him that made him into a big blob of mess. Beau turned around and smiled at him, apologising for what just happened. And well, it caught Kai off guard; he stopped all the sudden, gulped lightly and looked at her with wide eyes like a deer caught in headlights. Okay. So, proper introductions? Okay… Okay… Okay… You’ve got this Kai. “It’s uh… It’s okay…” he managed to wrestle out, feeling his face gradually get warmer if that was even possible. His head was going to turn into some giant tomato soon. Looking down and seeing the hand, Kai was quick to respond by shaking it with his (not without being that typical Korean child he was and placing a respectful hand onto his elbow as he did so. it was very possible that this project would be living hell for them both. kai looked like he was drowning, and beau felt like she was slowly being asphyxiated. but... what happened to trying? beau set on another smile and blinked at him a few times. "it's alright, kai. not the first time," she said with a small, low chuckle. as the last few people in front of them filed away, she walked up to pierce. the professor gave her a thin smile, and beau reached her hand into her bucket, fishing out a small slip of paper.

she backed up towards kai, sidling up next to him so they could both see what their project would be. slowly, she flicked the paper through her fingers, revealing the neat words printed in red ink. beau's hand trembled, and she walked over to the nearest desk, putting the piece of paper down and rushing her hands through her hair. romeo and juliet. in her mild panic, her eyes sought out their only comfort in the room. noah. she glanced over to him, olive eyes glazed with panic like grass webbeb with dewdrops on a spring dawn. but he wasn't worried at all -- noah was laughing, patting his partner on the back. his partner that was a boy. that he knew.

beau sighed weakly, turning back towards kai with an exasperated shrug. "i'm going to be honest with you for a moment. i really need this grade, so we're going to do well on this project. alright?" her eyes lingered on his for a moment before she clapped him on the shoulder. if noah was happy, why couldn't she pretend to be? he'd always said that sad girls just weren't as pretty.

relaxing into the stiff back of the plastic chair, she nestled her chin in her hand, drumming her fingers absently against the desk. "so, we need to modernize the script, no? that'll be a peach, considering i have no idea what either of them are saying." after a moment's pause, she looked back up at him with a smug grin. "one time in like, eighth grade, i got a 14 on a comprehension quiz on this shit." she laughed lightly, brushing her hand through her hair once more. "obtuse, as pierce would say."

[div class="scroll"]To be honest, Kai felt so much anxiety in the pit of his stomach, eating away at him, that everything was just moving in super speed before him. First, they were exchanging pleasantries, then Beau went and got their assignment topic, and now she was – she clapped him on the shoulder. Oh, dear Lord. She touched him. Well, poor old Kai was having a big old human glitch that he really didn’t understand how to function right now. She sat down before him on the chair and began to speak to him once more. Okay, wait. What had they been talking about again? His dark eyes danced over to the piece of paper that Beau had placed onto the table to see what it said once more. Romeo and Juliet. Along with the scene and page that they had to focus on. Okay, this wasn’t so bad. Kai felt like he knew this play like the back of his hand. Beau began to speak once again, which caught his attention. So… it seemed like she needed a good grade while also learning what the hell Shakespeare was actually talking about. Well, lucky for her – she had him. “I uh… I actually did a huge project on Romeo and Juliet for my H.S.C. drama course in high school” Kai began before pausing for a moment. Wait. They didn’t do H.S.C. subjects here. Nor did they have just primary school and high school. The American schooling system confused the heck out of him. “It’s uh… H.S.C…. Higher School Certificate so uh… from year ten we pick our courses and like, at the end of year eleven and year twelve we have assessments and exams and… yeah…” He was rambling again. About stupid little things that no one asked about nor probably cared about. This poor girl was probably already confused with the fact that she was stuck with an Asian that sounded like Crocodile Dundee. Now she was going to have to spend her time trying to decode his stupid ass every time he opened his mouth. Scratching the back of his head, Kai began to think hard about what he could say to cover up the mess that he had just blurted out in the form of word vomit. “I mean uh… So like… I have like an essay on my laptop and study notes from my exams” Okay, why couldn’t he had said that the first time around and not tell her his whole life story? Ah, for you see, the answer was clear. He was an idiot. Okay, not a literal idiot. He was pretty smart and managed to get top grades in all his exams in school and stuff. But he was a person idiot. And they’re the worst kind of idiots to be. Feeling his phone in his pocket once again vibrate, Kai frowned for a moment. Who the hell was texting him so much during class? Slipping his hand into his pocket, he quickly took out his phone and pressed the side button to see the home screen. Andrew. Four new messages from him – but Andrew knew that Kai never liked to use his phone in class. Instead, he just shook his head to himself and placed his phone back into his pocket. Slowly, he gazed back at the girl before him, still feeling nervous as all hell. “So uh… When did you… want to start cracking on this?” he asked. For you see, Kai was one of those people who liked to get all the work done well before the due date. The whole last-minute dash to get things done? Yeah, he was not a fan of all that high stress. He was one of those guys who liked to get it all over and done with and then it would be smooth sailing from there on out.

beau listened attentively, her hands tapping gently across the desktop surface. she needed to calm down. it was her first day with her new partner, and she wasn't even acting like herself. who was this little cowering, trembling girl? it wasn't beau. she smiled weakly, nodding along through her confusion -- hsc? it must've been an australian thing. he did sound painfully australian. the thought gave her a little chuckle, imagining kai wading out with crocodiles like he was some sort of steve irwin.

a grin lit her face as he explained. it made sense, even though the term still felt weird to her. either way, it seemed that maybe, just maybe, she'd hit a streak of luck with kai as her partner. he had an essay and notes? chances were that he at least understood what on god's green earth was going on in shakespeare's writings then, something more than beau could ever promise. hopefully everything wouldn't just fly over her head -- but beau couldn't depend on her measly luck, because who knew -- with a lucky partner like kai, she'd probably be maxed out on luck for another year or so.

her face crumpled a little bit when she saw him pull out his phone. last year, beau's partner had not only been an absolute ditz ( like her ) but also spent all her time on her phone ( also like her ). despite her earlier hope, beau couldn't help but wonder if what she thought was luck was really just... a mistake. when was she ever lucky? and out of all times, why would her luck start now?

but thankfully, kai tucked away with phone and spoke up. beau nodded calmly. "i mean, the sooner you get it over with, right?" pulling out a textbook from under the desk, she set the heavyset book on the table with a whistle. "these things are a nightmare embodied physically." her mind started working, mulling over what she already knew of the story. most of it amounted to a watered down version of boy meets girl and boy and girl die a gruesome death. all beau could wish was that their project wouldn't end the same.

"if you want, we can work things out so we can start reading this all," she tapped the book's cover, "and decide how we're gonna do this. like, after school or something. figures pierce wouldn't give us a lot of time in class for something this big." beau grimaced before reaching into the small bag she had slung over her shoulder, drawing out a loose slip of spare paper and a pen. she scrabbled down a hasty list of numbers before palming it over to beau. "my phone number." she offered, her hand outreached.

[div class="scroll"]At Beau’s suggestion, Kai began to slowly nod. She was right about one thing; Pierce wasn’t going to give them time during class. They weren’t in high school – or primary school – anymore and these assignments were all going to have to occur outside of class hours. And it was at that moment that Kai realised something… He was going to have to spend time outside class hours with a girl. It was fine. They could just go to the library. Yeah. Spend all their time in the library. Completely fine. Out in public. Never personally alone with her because that… that would… that would result in… something, wouldn’t it? Even as he stood there, having a mini human glitch in his mind, he felt like he was zoning out slightly. It wasn’t until he saw the piece of paper coming his way that he began to actually realise what was going on around him. He picked up the piece of paper and saw the random numbers sprawled across it. Wait, what was this? He looked up at her confused for a moment, before he saw those lips move in slow motion. My phone number. Well, dear Lord. Kai felt his face burn up like no tomorrow and his ears all the sudden become very, very hot. What’s the matter with you man? he scolded himself, feeling his heart pound in his chest. She’s just giving you her number so you guys can catch up and do this assignment! Yeah, but what if she starts talking to me really casually? Like, she starts sending me memes and stuff? Do I respond back? That’s usually what I do with everyone else? What if I offend her by not being casual – or what if I offend her by being too casual? Mate, you need to relax and actually respond to the damn girl. Wait. Respond? Kai’s dark eyes widened slightly as he felt himself mentally kick that big old lump of flesh that he called his brain. “Oh uh… Thank you” he stuttered slightly before – God dammit, did he just bow again to thank her? He was making a total fool of himself today. He quickly brought himself back up once again before looking down at the piece of paper he held in his hands. His fingers traced along the edges of the paper, fidgeting against it. “I’ll uh… I’ll text you once I’ve finished with my classes today. I uh… I really don’t like using my phone though while I’m on campus” He explained to her – but did she really ask him? The sound of the bell chiming over the announcement speakers began to fill the room. Ah, class was finally over. Pierce began to call out, reminding everyone to start on their assignments as soon as they could to ensure that they wouldn’t lack. The people around them began to shuffle, grabbing their bags and items before heading to file out of the room. Right. He had to find Andrew now at the outdoor area that he had shown him this morning. He looked at Beau once again, holding up the piece of paper. “Thanks again,” he said (somewhat confidently). “I’ll uh… I’ll message you later on. It was great meeting you” God dammit, he freaking bowed again. Kai could feel his ears and cheeks burn furiously and knew it was his cue to leave. With a small little wave, he left Beau’s side and made a straight A-line to the back of the classroom where he had sat for the class. Gathering up his items and placing them into his backpack, his eyes slowly gazed over at Beau. Man, he was praying that he could get out of this assignment alive. Many hours were spent just staring down at the new contact, his dark eyes tracing over the typed name Beau on his phone screen as he tried to come up with something – anything – to text her. With his parents, he was kind and respectful in his text messages. With Jessica, his little sister, he would often tell her that she stank from a brotherly, loving way. He didn’t want to come off as being too forward and way too eager to see her again. Especially because she had a boyfriend. But he also didn’t want to come off as if he didn’t care about the assignment. His anxiety levels were through the roof trying to figure out what the hell to do about this all. Eventually, his Umma had sat down with him and helped him compile a simple text to send to the damn girl. Yumi had told him to basically say ‘It’s Kai from English. Do you want to meet up to look through the assignment?’. Kai thought his Umma was absolutely crazy and that it was way too forward. Which lead to Yumi snatching Kai’s phone off of him and typing out the message herself. All the while, Kai was trying to rip the phone back out of his Umma’s hands but being extra cautious not to hurt the growing baby in Yumi’s tummy. Kai was on lockdown mode when his Umma announced that she had sent the message. He was thinking about different places he could move, how to change his name and how he could change his appearance so no one would ever recognise him. However, moments later, his phone chimed – it was Beau! Hallelujah; Yumi Yang wasn’t just out to make her son die from embarrassment. Like Beau, Kai lived close to their school. But his mind began to tick again – what if she felt uncomfortable coming to his house? Wouldn’t he want her to feel more comfortable? And if it meant studying at her place, then so be it. So, he agreed. And that was how he found himself standing out the front of Beau’s house. He put his foot down on the floor, balancing his skateboard with his other foot, as he gazed up at the house. Quickly, he took his phone out of his pocket to see the time. 4:58 pm. He was two minutes early. Well, to be completely honest, he had been fifteen minutes early before. He had been freaking out that he would be late despite her house only being two streets away. Once he had realised that he was way too early, he had decided to go for a casual, gentle ride around the block. And now he was back. Picking up his board under his arm after placing his phone away, he readjusted his backpack strap and made his way up to the front door. Okay. You’ve got this Kai. She obviously doesn’t live at home alone. You won’t be alone with her. You’ve got this. You’ve got this. You’ve got this. the day had been slow for beau, one she spent blurring time with music and binge-watching sessions. absolutely nothing had happened, and the day had been so insignificant that if somebody asked her what she had done the past 30 minutes, she couldn't answer. she felt like she was swimming in clouds; grey and endless. sure, she was ready and prepped for a full day, but she could barely even force herself off the couch. dickinson was on repeat for the second time, and the bag of potato chips she had clutched between her legs was almost empty. crumbs collected on her shirt, smudges of chocolate sitting on the corners of her lips.

ding! her phone sounded, and she dug through the layers of blankets she was under for it, pulling it out to see a new text from noah. "surprise visit! almost at ur place (:". beau nearly spat out her chips, promptly rolling out from under the blankets and rushing to the sink to wash the chocolate and chips off from her face. just as she was wiping it off, the door opened with a click. noah saw her and stopped in the doorway, beau caught like a deer in headlights. noah snorted, and she started giggling, still clutching a tissue over her mouth.

"look at you, so silly," he said, closing the door and crossing over to her. picking her up by the waist, he spun her around, her giggling and him chuckling as she squirmed under his hands. pulling her down into an embrace, she laughed into his shoulder, pecking him on the cheek. noah hooked her arm around her again, hoisting her up onto the counter and pressing a kiss onto her lips. she giggled again, running her fingers through his hair.

noah pulled away, his brows furrowed. "you expecting anyone?" he asked, eyes on the door warily. beau shook her head, glancing over her shoulder. "take me to the door," she snorted. noah turned around and she slid off the counter onto his back, grabbing onto his shoulders as he started to spin around. she laughed mirthfully, clutching onto a fistful of his shirt as to not fall off. careening to the door, she reached over him to open it, laying her chin on his shoulder before pulling open the door.

kai. her heart dropped at the sight of his face. of course she'd been forgetting something -- that was her nature, and when she wasn't forgetting something, something was bound to go wrong regardless. silently, she slipped off noah's back, taking a gulp before giving kai a weak smile. "oh gosh. i'm so sorry, i totally forgot. um, come in," she gestured, stepping aside and gently bumping noah out of the way.

"i can make some food real quick if you'd like?" beau offered, her voice anxious. crossing to the table parallel to the kitchen, she felt her cheeks flush to a pink-red as she searched for her english textbook. i'm making a fool of myself. i look disgusting, the house looks disgusting, and now kai's going to think i'm one of those girls who just doesn't exist without their boyfriend. and where is my goddamn textbook?!

Nothing weird about that, right? But then there was that look on her face. And on Noah’s face. As if he had ruined some perfect moment the pair of them were having. Had she forgotten that he was coming over today? Well, that was confirmed when she apologised, saying she totally forgot before welcoming him into her home. Well, this was awkward. Kai simply nodded, unsure of what to say about this whole situation. He could sense that his presence was… well, unwanted. If not by Beau, then by Noah who was staring at him with daggers. As Kai slowly walked inside, he gave Noah a small bow to greet the other male before slipping past the taller male. He could feel the hairs on the back of his neck starting to raise as he was sure that Noah was staring at the back of his head, coming up with some sort of way to end his life without people finding out about it. Hearing Beau offer him some food, Kai could feel his cheeks warm up. Wait, why was he so flustered over her just offering him some food? Maybe it was because it was a kind gesture. Or maybe it was because Beau was a girl. He was going to go with the latter. He waved his free hand lightly, shaking his head in short motions. “No, no, please, it’s okay,” He responded. “I uh… I had an early dinner anyways… I have… work afterwards.” Wow, like she really cares that you have work afterwards.. He gulped lightly, his gaze moving from Beau to his feet before a thought popped into his head. His shoes. Did Beau want him to wear his shoes inside? Of course, like the classical Asian he was, his house was a strict ‘no shoes inside’ policy. At the entrance of the house, there was a shoe rack so all their shoes and some slippers to change into once in the house. Heck, they even had spare slippers for people who visited. What if Beau was the same thing? What if she didn’t like shoes on in the house. Kai Yang, you didn’t even ask! You’ve just walked in here with your damn shoes on – you could be acting very disrespectful right now! Wow. His inner thoughts were really letting him have it today. “Uh… do you… Do you want me to… Take my shoes off?” He asked slowly, looking from his shoes up to Beau. And for some reason, he still couldn’t shake the awkwardness that he was feeling when he first entered into the house. He really felt like he didn’t belong here; especially with Noah staring down at him. “Did I come at a bad time?” He finally managed to get the courage to say. He brought his skateboard from under his arm to in front of him, his fingers lightly tracing over the edge. Fidgeting; it was a great way to try and get rid of those jittery feelings he could feel thrashing around in his stomach. “Because I uh… I can come back another day or…” He paused, looking over at Noah before slowly turning back to Beau “Or I could just… get some of it done at… uh… at home… and send you what I do?” Was he offering to do the assignment – the group assignment – for the pair of them? Beau's brow furrowed at his refusal. The tone of Kai's voice was woefully polite, and it rose a sad note of melancholy in her chest. "Oh, alright then." Swinging open the fridge, she took but a bowl of leftover mac-n-cheese, placing it onto the counter and grabbing a spoon from a drawer. She idly mixed it around, the cold, congealed cheese gluing the pasta together in clumps. his question again raised her brow. How nervous is this kid?

"Mm, yeah, go ahead. you can just put them wherever you want," Beau chimed, raising a spoon of the pasta to her lips. It was uncomfortably cold, but it gave her hands something to do and soothed her nerves. But his next words were what really brought a frown to her lips. Suddenly, she was the one who felt out of place, as if she was invading even in her own home. Dropping the spoon in the bowl with a sharp clank, she crossed over to Noah and leaned into his ear, whispering something quietly. "Noah, why don't you go somewhere else?" With a small smooch, she waved him away, and Noah angrily sulked off to another hall in the house. Beau only assumed she was going to her room to wait and stew in his own anger.

With a wan smile, she turned towards Kai, her eyes soft and sweet. "There's no need for that. Really. Why don't we sit and get started?" She crossed to the small table in the kitchen, putting an airy air to herself. Giving a glance around, she finally spotted the deep blue corner of her textbook sitting under a stack of binders. A relieved smile crossed her face and she grabbed it, flipping it open to a page with a narrow bookmark already sticking out of it. "I already went ahead and skimmed the thing." Beau hesitated a moment, clucking her tongue against the roof of her mouth. "Um... not very good with this, so I just wanted to not seem too incompetent." Her voice was tense as she looked down at the page, acutely aware of Kai's nerves and Noah's seething anger.

A small part of her cursed him for being so damn possessive, but at the same time, she knew she wouldn't do anything about it. She breathed out a sigh and ran her hand through her hair, letting it fall in swaths over her shoulders. "You don't happen to have any ideas for a time period, do you?"

However, as he heard the sound of the spoon clanking against the bowl, his attention was stolen away from taking his shoes off and focused on the girl. Had he said something to make her upset? Oh God. What have you done Kai Yang? You haven’t even been here for five minutes and already you’ve made her feel uncomfortable. he mentally screamed at himself. His dark eyes watched as she moved over to her boyfriend before she whispered something and gave him a kiss. Whatever it was that she said, Noah wasn’t impressed and Kai could feel it from the way the taller male shot him a dirty ass look. As Noah retreated away down the hall, Kai gulped lightly before bringing his focus back to his shoes. Maybe he should’ve just rescheduled the whole thing? Maybe Beau was just being super polite and was only pretending like it was ok? Well, these little insecure thoughts continued to roll around his head as he slipped off his shoes and ensured that they were up against the wall so no one would trip over them. His attention was brought back to Beau as she asked if they should get started. A small nod came from him once more before he began to trail his way over to the small table. He slipped his backpack off his shoulders before bringing it in front of himself and unzipping it. As Beau explained to him that she ‘went ahead and skimmed’ the book, Kai gazed up at her and gave her an encouraging smile. “I don’t think you’ll be incompetent at all… I’ve worked with people in the past who didn’t even both buying the required texts.” he responded as he pulled out his own copy of the book and his laptop. He then placed his bag on the floor and sat down at the table. Hearing her question, Kai froze for a moment. Okay. This was where Beau was about to meet the geek that was Kai Yang. “Uh… yeah.. I sort of… made up like a calendar? Or like… a spreadsheet?” He responded nervously. Oh, man. She was going to have one look at it and think he was a massive nerd and make fun of him for the rest of this assignment, wasn’t she? Releasing a small, shaky exhale, Kai opened up his MacBook laptop. Automatically, the login page came up to which he was quick to type in his password. Once the password was accepted, the screen illuminated with a large background image of a fight scene from Attack on Titan. Great. She probably thinks you’re an anime nerd too now he thought to himself. Well, he sort of was. But that was beside the point. Clicking on the word document logo, the screen opened up a past file which he had been working on. It showed two columns with rows indicating each week; one column began with “to be completed” with the weeks doing down. The other column had a list of things they needed to do before the end of that week. He pushed his laptop more on an angle so Beau could see the screen better, before pointing at the different columns and explaining to her. “So… by the end of this week… We should have read the text, made some notes, and decided on what style we want to focus on. The end of next week, we really should have started with the skeleton of our presentation and start gathering information for it…” He paused, looking at the screen and back to Beau. “I’m sorry… I probably went a bit overboard with this…” he said sheepishly, placing a hand on his neck in an embarrassed state. “I just… I really liked to be prepared when it comes to assignments because of work and like… family and friend life, you know?”

Beau watched silently as Kai walked over to the table, giving him a weak half-smile as he started unpacking his bag. She felt embarrassingly unprepared, and despite the fact she could simply get up and get her things, it felt like doing so would be admitting her already obvious forgetfulness. His words surprised her and she snorted, clapping a hand to her mouth as she did so. "I'm flattered, Kai, but trust me, we'll see how long that lovely little sentiment lasts."

Her brows quirked up as he mentioned a calendar. At first her mind didn't make the connection. Like... just a regular calendar? Why would we need a calendar? She watched attentively as he flipped open his laptop, quickly typing in his password and unlocking it. Beau had to fight not to recoil at the sight of his screensaver: The image of what looked like two cartoonish... muscle-men fighting was definitely not what she'd expected. What did I expect anyways? A resume or something?

She wasn't going to lie to herself, it wouldn't have surprised her. Shaking off the image of the muscle-men, she refocused her vision on the laptop, eyes scanning over the neat spreadsheet displayed on the screen. It clicked in her head, and she nodded, a faint grin spreading across her lips. "Hey, that's actually a really neat idea." Beau shifted in her chair, watching as Kai rubbed at his neck idly. Truthfully, she wasn't exactly sure what he did mean by family and friend life, but she didn't really care to figure it out. Instead she hummed her approval and nodded again, shifting the textbook so they could both see it.

Briefly, she pulled out her phone, referencing back to the note of the specific scene she'd made. She tucked it away and her fingers started deftly flipping through the pages, finding the scene a few pages away. Beau tapped it lightly, turning to him with a wan smile. "Guess I'm Juliet, huh? Oh my, I'm such a damsel, what will I do without my handsome knight to save me?" she mocked, fanning herself with her hand. But as the words sounded back to her, her cheeks flushed pink, realizing the suggestion behind the statement. A shadow crossed over her brow and she locked her gaze down on the textbook, heat still dancing cruelly across her face.

He was one of those people who struggled with hearing compliments from other people. He wasn’t quite sure why it was so hard to hear that he had done a great job. Hearing her mocking tone, Kai couldn’t help but smile widely at her with his nose crinkling as he tried to be polite and hold back a chuckle. His mouth slightly agape and he had to harshly blink a couple of times to try and reboot his brain as it began to lag with the pinwheel of death on display. “That’s… that’s a…” he began before his voice fell into a very soft whisper, almost too scared to say what the scene was. “It’s a kissing scene…" Now, he wasn’t sure about Beau – actually, no wait. He was one hundred percent sure – but… He was yet to have his first kiss. He had already witness Beau kiss that boyfriend of hers a couple of times so of course she had kissed people here and there. But Kai… oh, Kai Yang was yet to have his first kiss. He was just a nervous wreck around girls. It only got worse around girls that he liked. But… people didn’t need to know that, right? When Beau glanced over she could see a shadow of a smile dancing on Kai's lips. She grinned and turned back to the book, satisfied that things were going at least a little bit better. Her mind jumped back to Noah, nervous of what he might be doing, but she only kept up her airy grin and pushed the thoughts aside. With a gentle laugh, she parted her lips to speak, but Kai suddenly reached over and started rifling through the book, his eyes wide with panic and something glittering darker.

She raised her hands in play surrender and bit her lip, eyeing him nervously. When he finally spoke, his voice was uncannily tinny in the silent kitchen. "Mm, I'm pretty sure it was," Beau nodded, wringing her hands in her lap. Whatever he was nervous about she didn't know, but now, she was getting nervous too. She started to gently tap her foot against the floor, the nervous habit soothing her as his mouth opened slightly. Everything felt suddenly out of her control, like the whole project was a train that had just taken a sharp turn to hell.

And what he said next? Yeah, it was definitely going to hell.

"Oh," Beau murmured softly, knotting her hands into fists. She turned to him, chuckling nervously and trying to keep the grin on her face from turning into a grimace. "That's fine." She paused. Nodded. "Yeah. This is fine, right?" Part of her wanted to go running to Noah, but she stayed in place. It's fine. Who was she saying that for? Her, Kai, or Noah? Oh my god. Am I seriously thinking like this right now?

She cleared her throat, trying to ignore the warm flush that had spread across her cheeks. There was no reason to be embarrassed. They both were being forced into the situation. It was just a grade. Just a grade. Shifting in her seat nervously, she smiled again, gently shifting the book back so she could see it. "Guess I should've read it a little more thoroughly, huh?" [div class="scroll"]He could feel the heat radiating in his cheeks and slowly moving, spreading to his ears and the sides of his neck. There was nothing to be embarrassed about, right? It was just a kiss. Just a freaking kiss. Sucking in air through his teeth, Kai kept on telling himself that. Just a kiss, just a kiss, just a kiss. Well, he had never had just a kiss and the first and only time he had attempted to kiss anyone, he ended up breaking a tooth in half.

Let me explain.

Basically, he really liked this girl in school, Ashley. She was your typical Australian beach babe; long blonde hair and tanned complexion. She was into everything he was into; anime, surfing, skateboarding and just being a plain goof. Basically, she was the first girl he had ever been able to become comfortable with (even though it took him over two years for that to happen). He had liked her the whole time too and she seemed to see past all his dorkiness and he actually thought he had a chance.

One day, they were hanging out with each other by the skatepark. Ashley walked and Kai slowly skated next to her as they were discussing about just… well, life. They came to a point where they both stood, staring at each other and something had been screaming in Kai’s brain to just kiss her. She looked so beautiful in the sun, and he could see every imperfect detail that made her so perfect to him. He went in for it – he was leaning forward to kiss her and then it happened – he had leant too far forward and his skateboard came out from underneath him. Leaving Kai to fall straight onto his face and mouth covered in blood. It was not a fun sight.

I bet you’re wondering what happened to Ashley? Well, a week later she hooked up with one of the football players from school and nine months later, gave birth to a baby girl. That’s how Ashley was going.

Hearing Beau’s voice, it dragged him back to reality. His brain had been glitching the second he realised that they were probably going to have to kiss. His face was on fire and his mouth slightly parted as he listened to her words. Oh God. Did she think that he was… was offended in some way?! Oh God, oh God, oh God. No, no, no. Way to make her feel uncomfortable, mate he scolded himself. The last thing he wanted was for her to get upset because she thought that he was offended. Or even worse – for her to get offended that he didn’t want to kiss her. Either way, Kai’s mind went into complete and utter chaos.

“No, no, I uhh…” he began, speaking words before even processing them. “You’re not offensive at all! I’d be more than comfortable –” Mmmhm, was that a lie? “- to, you know… kiss or be kissed by you. I’m sure you’re a great kisser. I’m not bothered at all” God dammit, Kai Yang. You’re butchering this! “I mean! If doesn’t matter how you kiss? You could kiss like a fish and that’s completely fine. We’re doing this for a mark and we want to get the perfect score, don’t we?” Okay, idiot, ring it back in. Stop acting like a freak.

Releasing a shaky sigh, feeling his face on fire more than ever before, he looked at Beau with a complexion that almost resembled a puppy scared that it’s master was going to find the mess he made in the other room. “I just… Noah…?” he said in a quiet voice as if Noah could walk in on them at any more. “Would… would he be okay with it? He… won’t you know… want to beat me up?”

Beau only watched as Kai stumbled over his own words, fighting to keep a smile from creeping across her lips. It was almost endearing, how he was flustered, and she had to fight to keep her back from shaking as she started to giggle silently. She dipped her head down, gasping in breaths, before turning to him and grinning widely. "Yeah. We're gonna be fine. I think Pierce is trying to just torture everyone." Even as she turned to the textbook, eyes scanning over the script and skirting around that one little line that was the cause for everything, her grin held fast. Maybe it was some type of hysteria, but suddenly it all seemed a little bit funny.

But the smile quickly slipped from her lips as he brought up Noah. Soon, she didn't see a flustered, somewhat nervous classmate, but somebody with fear, real and raw in his eyes. The sight nauseated her. She cast her gaze down, trying to ignore the rolling guilt that rose in her stomach. She hated that he was scared of Noah, and she hated that it meant he was scared of her too. Suddenly she felt like some maiden on a pedestal, a princess high up in a tower away from everybody else. A twisted princess, one who even want her crown.

Again, she turned to him, but the wan hint of a smile on her face didn't carry to her darkened eyes. "No, he'll be fine," she sighed, voice unusually airy. Her shoulders felt oddly stiff as she looked down at the table, but her eyes weren't seeing the chesnut grains.

The night was cool and its air brisk, but Beau's mind felt painfully foggy as she stumbled out of the little one-story ranch that itself seemed to be dancing with life. Music spilled out behind her, lighting the silence with echoes of synth and excited cheering. As her ankles fought to stay strong in her little heels, a firm hand on the small of her back seemed to be the only thing holding her up. She turned to him and he turned to her, and they kissed, and suddenly, the hand was under her skirt.

And she remembered sitting in her room, ankles traced with bands of red from the tight straps of her heels, looking out of the window, the twinkling stars blurred by tears. She called and called, called every one of her friends until one of them picked up. She'd barely made it back home. Beau had nearly ran from Noah after that, too flustered to go back inside and wait for her car. As she walked back home in the night, she took her heels off, hair falling in messy strands around her shoulders.

At the time, she'd had so many questions, and it seemed like she couldn't answer any of them herself. She'd called Cassidy, fighting to keep the tears out of her voice as she begged for answers. When Cassidy responded, she could hear the smile in her voice. It was a good thing. It was a good thing, right? Beau pulled the covers over her, blindly trying to put her phone on her nightstand. As it fell off the edge and cracked against the ground, she only listened, not even bothering to wash off her makeup or unpin her hair before she fell asleep.

It had to be a good thing. Right?

Beau blinked, the familiar face of the wooden table fading back into her sight. She absentmindedly curled her fingers around her phone, feeling the narrow cracks that still snaked through its screen. She cleared her throat, grabbing a stray highlighter on the table. Her voice was quiet as she spoke, hovering in the empty air. "So, should we start annotating?"

Shoving dirty clothes into the laundry basket, re-fluffing the pillows on the couch, and making sure that the windows were open to allow the afternoon breeze to come through. With a deep sigh, he gazed around to look at his attic bedroom. He had been very blessed to have been able to get this bedroom. After all, his Umma had wanted to initially turn it into a study for her and Yung-Guk. However, after they saw how much stress Kai was going under from transitioning into his new school, they offered it to him so he could have his own little space. Being the introverted child of extroverted parents was hard, but having this attic room helped. His parents had bought him a king-sized mattress, and he had space for not only his study desk with gaming computers but for a couple of lounge chairs, a television screen, all his consoles and plenty of room to move around. However, he was freaking out at the moment, praying that everything looked okay. Did the powers on the wall look too weird? Or did he look too geeky with all his gaming consoles and computer gaming setup? Well, it was too late to hide it all. Because Beau was coming over for another study session. At first, he had been hoping if they could study downstairs at the dining table. However, his little sister, Jessica, had friends coming over to do their studying (around about five of them for some reason?) which meant she got top priority over the dining table. Releasing a deep sigh, Kai wiped his sweaty palms onto his pants before looking down at his clothes. Should he change? No, not because he wanted to look good for Beau. But rather the fact he had rushed straight home from his class to make sure the room was tidy. You see, he had been in class when he had received a text message from Jessica and his Umma who were both saying that Jessica and her friends were using the dining table tonight. Therefore, because he was one of those people who didn’t check messages until after class, he had to rush home to make sure his room was tidy enough. Taking a quick sniff, he declared to himself that he didn’t stink. But, at the same time, didn’t want to chance it. So, off came his clothes and into the laundry hamper before he moved over to his drawer set to find some new items. Okay. He was set. He had placed on a long-sleeved navy shirt and dark jeans. Once he slipped his bare feet into his house slippers, he began to look around once more just to triple make sure that the place was clean. Okay. He was fine. Okay. He could do this. Okay. Okay. Okay. Oh, wait. Ya-ni. His dark eyes flashed over towards his bed to see a sleeping Australian Mist cat sprawled across. What if Beau was allergic? Or she wasn’t a fan of cuts? Well, he was going to have to do something about that. He had been so thankful that they could bring his cat over to America when they moved. Kai had feared that the pet would have to be given away but, thankfully, they managed to get the paperwork complete and Ya-ni had moved with them. “Ya-Ni… Psst… Ya-Ni.” he hissed to the cat, patting the bed next to her. He didn’t want to totally freak her out considering she was asleep. Her hazel eyes slowly began to slide open, causing Kai to smile. Ah, she was so cute. “Come on, Ya-Ni” he said to her, sliding his hands under her body and scooping her into his arms. Ah, she was in heaven. The cat sprawled in her owner’s arms, her tummy in the car as the boy carried her like a baby. She was so placid sometimes that it was a complete joke. With a soft chuckle in his throat, Kai turned at his heels and began to make his way out of his bedroom. He wondered if Beau was going to be here soon…
