from a young age, shawn was pushed by his demanding father to pursue middle and high school football. shawn, being an awkward and lanky tween at the time, struggled to fit into the team when he was accepted in 9th grade but as time went on, he adapted to his cornerback position and put up a jock facade.
his childhood was a bit unhappy thanks to his dad’s offhand comments about his lack of masculinity, but shawn had forced himself to nab a girlfriend and act as brutish and rude as possible. upon graduating high school, he was immediately granted a full-ride scholarship to play cornerback for the virginia cavaliers.
his happiness was very short-lived, and his hopes of getting drafted to play for the redskins or any nfl team for that matter was crushed when he suffered a serious foot fracture that left him with permanent repercussions during his second year at the university of virginia. the weight of his father’s disappointment and his depressive mood swings caused shawn to drop out completely from school and move out to the pacific northwest to get away from his family.

the couple and their daughter soon moved out of fidelia’s home and bought their own house near a rural oregon town. during middle school, lucía was constantly picked on for her thick accent and unintelligible english, but things would get way worse for her when ramón passed away from a sudden heart attack. as strict and sexist her father was, lucía was heartbroken and coped with his death by abusing marijuana and alcohol.
