To be perfectly honest with you, that part of the lore is still being written. The colonies are probably the most underdeveloped part of the world and the tribes themselves even more so. Unless you desperately want your character to be from one of the aboriginal civilizations, I would avoid it.

I'd say it's an uncanny, albeit extremely minor, sense of familiarity. Sort of akin to a thing of blink and you'll miss it. Scales are the biggest give away and would definitely be the only way to confirm it for certain.
