  1. Hello! I was morbidly inspired to do this by a similar thing brought up in the video games section asking about these types of moments in video games, but now I want to hear if anyone of you guys have witnessed from others or you yourself with a character committed. The most disturbing things that have happened in any RP's you have been apart of. Note: This is not meant to be a thread to rant on edgelords or to hate on people who have done such. This is simply to discuss experiences and know of any disturbing things you have bore witness to in a RP. This thing may seem relatively tame, but what happened when I mixed the Secret Police forces of the Nazi Gestapo, the Soviet NKVD, the Soviet KGB, the East German Stasi, and some modern techniques in a dystopian world where I was given permission to run a Secret Police/Intelligence force against dissenters in the RP... Let's just say there were sensory deprivation white rooms for cells, and dastardly torture techniques were employed, as well as deadly efficient means of catching resistance fighters... So basically any rebels worst nightmare to hope that you would never be captured...
  2. So due to some recent issues that have popped up in this thread I'm re-defining the purpose of this thread to prevent further arguments and unnecessary tangents. Please only post your own pet peeves or comments relating to other users peeves. No posts calling out other people's opinions/peeves. No giving unnecessary feedback on "improving" other people's roleplay styles Keep debates on topic and civilized please. No calling out other players specifically based on their opinions or contribution to pet peeves. And as a disclaimer none of the pet peeves listed in this thread are meant to be taken as ironclad laws of "proper" roleplaying. People might dislike something but that doesn't mean that it is necessarily an incorrect or bad habit to have. For everyone who dislikes a pet peeve there are plenty of people who don't care one way or the other or who actively enjoy using it.
  3. So I'm recently coming off a pretty good hiatus in roleplaying. And I keep trying to get back in the groove only to have various things pop up to get in the way. Either my allergies start acting up, I find a new podcast that I proceed to binge watch, or I just have long days at work and I'm just tired by the end of the day. My question is how do you keep yourself motivated when life throws you curve balls? How do you find time to roleplay if you have a busy schedule and maybe not the greatest memory?

  5. Hi there! I am FreckledWizard, and I absolutely love the ending of a character's story to be death. With that in mind, I have had only one character who had died so far, and I wanted to share that character's experience and how he died. Consider it a... memorial? Of sorts. Roleplay type: Realistic, but anime zombie world. Character name: Taro Miyashita What you need to know: He was a child prodigy, trapped in a house among-st the apocalypse with four classmates (who were each different roleplayers), and fascinated with the idea of finding love before he died. He was also kind of a jerk, and secretly the brother of one those classmates. (orphanage/foster care involved) How he died: He was malnourished, wounded, drawn in by a zombie (similar to that of the witch in left 4 dead), infected and then shot by his sister, without her ever finding out they were related. *the killing blow* She moved no faster than a leisurely walk as she slinked past Hisoka, pulling the offered gun from his hand as she went. Chrys bent down into a crouch before slowly lowering herself into a kneel, ignoring her knee's raging protests. She cooed softly and brushed her hand through Taro's hair, working out tangles as she went. Chrys repeated the motion for a good minute, murmuring reassurances over the gurgling of the long gone child and she only withdrew her hand when she pressed the cold muzzle of the gun to Taro's forehead. A backsplash of gore was inevitable but after she pulled the trigger, silencing the damning painful noises, she didn't move to wipe the splatters off her neck and face. The new clothes were a lost cause though, and as she rose from the ground to press the gun back into Hisoka's hand she apologized for dirtying them so soon. The apology was rough, no more than a growl really and when she raised her head the excitable or even the bitterly angry looks that usually dominated her features were nowhere to be seen. Instead her expression was cold, apathetic until it reached her eyes. Her eyes were a completely different story. The brown hues lacked any of their usual warmth replaced by something dark and feral and so utterly unlike her that it was as though something else had taken possession of her. It was a real shame that it was indeed all Chrys in there and the likely hood of her cheery persona making an appearance ever again was getting slimmer and slimmer by the second. Would love to hear your own experiences!
  6. Now, I know there is a thread for roleplay pet peeves. I know there is a thread for things roleplayers do that annoy you. I know there is a thread for tropes that you want to see die. But I feel this one is different, because I want to concentrate specifically on writing in this one. These can come from roleplays, from books, or even something that you find annoying when you are trying to write. Do you hate purple prose? Do you hate the 'Damned if you do, damned if you don't' cliché? Do you hate world-building? Do you hate it when there isn't enough world-building (I sure do) Here's an example: I am a detailed writer. I have nothing against casual or simple writers, I do not see myself as superior to them. I come on to this site to have fun and practice my writing skills, not to gloat. Now, I am also a 1x1 rper, and I always put it in my interest check that I'm a detailed writer, and would like my partner to write detailed as well... but many people seem to completely miss that part of my interest check, so I get some not detailed partners. That's not my peeve (though I wish people would read more carefully...). My peeve actually sneaks up on you. What I call: Psuedo detailed. I hate pseudo detailed because it seems to be popular belief that quality=quantity and I'll see posts that have a lot of words, but barely any substance. And then comes what I call reactionary characters. This can be any character, because it depends on how they're written. This character only reacts and is pushed along by other characters and the plot, rather than pushing themselves along. The whole post is usually this character reacting and not really doing anything. Which I can't stand. It makes me want to rip the post out of the interwebs, shake it around, and demand that it does something, damn it. Anyways, tell me your thoughts!
  7. Now, I'm sort of limited on what I mean by this - I'm not referring to the 'cutesy kids that are dumb as bricks and only exist as filler characters' or anything like that. Nor am I talking about the kids that are somehow world-class assassins who also have an IQ higher than Einstein. I'm talking about well-developed child characters, aged 4 to let's say 14. I'm someone who makes a fair few in my RP's as I feel like they sort of bring two worlds together if you do it correctly, and give a lot of different room in the RP in the way of development and opportunities. I've also found that people willing to play a character below the age of 15 is quite rare here. Anyone else here someone who enjoys playing them?
  8. What tropes are you sick of seeing in RPs? I want to make sure I am avoiding or subverting these tropes when I make my new quest. I have a few I roll my eyes when I see: 1. Every girl is a potential love interest. Seriously, that is a monk who has taken a vow of chastity and thinks you are a demon. Yet you flirt with her and try to kiss her. If this character was male, you'd not be trying to change her entire world view. You'd accept the character's place as a villain and get on with the story. 2. Characters with no childhood. Yes, I get not everyone wants to deal with family baggage, so I'm cool with everyone your character is related to is dead. But your character wasn't found fully formed in the bar where the game started. Where are they from? Did they go to school? How was their relationship with their parents? Did they have dreams they didn't achieve? 3. Murder Hobo I get you want to play a combat character, but maybe you can take a few non combat related abilities to flesh out your character? Maybe your cool kung fu monk can drive? Gardens? Is a good debater of religious philosophy because he is a monk?! Same with social characters that can't do nothing but talk. Take some Resistance so you can drink and survive being poisoned at least. 4. The Reluctant Adventurer We get your character doesn't want to be here and rather be at home doing hobbit things. But do we have to have a discussion everytime we need your character to do plot things? /rant
  9. In my opinion, one of the most important parts of a good RP is tossing in a comedic touch. It can be as simple as having your character be a punsmithing memelord (like mine), or as complicated as setting up an entire storyline leading to a hilarious ending (like Rhythm Heaven Megamix does twice). Of course, there's also the random, unplanned moments of improv comedy that count, too. I want to see your favorite comedic moments. We'll start off with what a friend of mine posted in a Discord RP server I host. The only context I'll give is that his character, Daxter is an anthro rabbit/wolf hybrid. Basically a rabbit with a wolf's tail. As for the rest... you're on your own.
  10. I'm curious how all you lovely folks feel about your writing skills. Does low self-esteem run rampant here? Or high self-esteem? Maybe a decent mix of the two? We can also discuss techniques that can be used to build the confidence you have in your writing. I think that would prove helpful for a lot of writers here (including myself, oops.) I'll start. I suppose I vary, but for the most part, my confidence barely exists. I have the same issues with my drawn work as well but I've never been the type of person to have an incredibly high self-esteem. I'm generally clouded by uncertainty and insecurity, which honestly blows. Sometimes I like what I do but that's rare. I try to put out a sense of confidence, however. Fake it till you make it, right? What about you guys?
  11. Hello everyone! I'm new to this site, having taken a long break from roleplay, so I thought I'd get out there and do some discussion. I think I'm what you might call an experienced or advanced player, though I'm a bit rusty. Browsing the forums and partner searches I've seen a few things pop up repeatedly that have made me wonder if I have some ~unpopular opinions~ in regard to role playing based on my experiences of old (which will probably turn out to be totally uncontroversial). 1) I enjoy Roleplays that use tropes and clichéd characters. familiar plotlines and recognisable stock characters make a good starting point precisely because they are familiar to everyone involved. My characters aren't strictly type, and I'm someone who is likely to subvert tropes if I find them, but I like it when I find players playing tropes, even totally straight. 2) I enjoy role playing against ridiculous, unsubtle characters maybe sometimes even more than more realistic/nuanced characters. You know what I mean by ridiculous, they have pink eyes and a dramatic back story, and a personality that suggests nothing mundane has ever happened to them. This overlaps with the first point I think. 3) I enjoy playing with less experienced players hell, even players that aren't very "good". I like the feeling that I'm playing with someone who is excited and learning, and "bad" Roleplays sometimes mean fun challenges. 4) less is more when it comes to characters this is something I take quite seriously. An "over written" or overly developed character can be difficult to play against in my opinion, vs. a character with some gaps that can be filled as you go. These are all pretty idle thoughts. Obviously good role players are good role players and we all love complex, rewarding and generous games, but I think there are other types of fun to be had too (probably I will change my mind after a few weeks and be putting "YOU MUST BE THIS TALL TO ENTER" signs on all my Roleplays, but there you go). What at do you think? Agree, disagree? Argue with me!
  12. Hey all. After talking to another user on the site by the name of Sunbather, something was said at the end that really caught my attention -- and got me thinking. It was something I wanted to follow up on, but include as many people who had an opinion on it, too. It was in regard to demographics. So @Sunbather, if you don't mind and aren't shy, could you expand on that here? I think it would be interesting hearing what else you have to say. I'm not sure 100% what Sunbather meant and felt on that, but I too have my own set of questions related, I want to put to anyone that has a thought. They center on demographics, mainly the maturity of roleplays you see in general around. This site I believe does not have an explicit rating, but I assume is to revolve around PG-13. Knowing this, and seeing the abundance od roleplays around, in your opinion, what do you think about the current levels of maturity? Ip top, I will include a poll for you to vote if you don't want to make your views publicly known, but I encourage you to say what you feel (Poll is Anonymous). When I spoke with Sunbather, this part of demographics is what my mind immediately jumped to, and I don't really mind much, but it is certainly something I've noticed in the back of my head. I talk about the "fluffy and lightheartedness" of RPs in general. There are pockets where things are a little more cynical and jaded, but the majority are beautiful epics where romance is perfect, characters are near invincible, and there's little to no sense of meaningful loss or death. Everything works out in the end, PCs just happen to miss every single terrible thing that has happened and survive on through however long the RP went. There is nothing wrong about this to me. I understand it. Who wants to RP having problems? On the other hand, I've noticed an undercurrent of something else coming about. Kind of like a rebellion to that standard. With topics on macabre in RP, flaking players, OP characters, erotic content, and lack of original roleplays/ideas, I have a good feeling a lot of these are connected. Or at least two different viewpoints starting to pull away from each other, hard. I'm not sure what to make of it, so I ask you roleplayers. Do you feel the general batch of RPs here is too immature, just fine, or too serious and mature? I myself would fall into that "just fine" group because I am aware the level here is not meant to be M-Rated, but lower. Also, if there is at least some form of death and challenge in RP, I can get along okay no matter how cheesy other parts of the roleplay are. However, those looking to go a mature route in some respects I admit, are few and far between. While others still, take the mature route, just so they can say they're taking the mature route. It's very hard to find an even mix. So with that said, how do you all feel? Have you even noticed this? Did you not? Have you known people who've been bothered by this? Is this a major reason why you're not enthusiastic about what you see or can't find "good" RPs? I'm I just utterly wrong on this one? Do you know what I'm talking about? Please post your opinions below. *****This discussion topic is a little advanced but if you have a thought, go ahead and answer. Warning though. Anything off topic, malicious, and derailing is going to be reported. If it has relevance to you but nobody else, please keep it inside.
  13. I'd like this to be a thread where you can share and discuss the elements of roleplaying that intimidate you. Have there been any roleplays whose concept and pitch excited you, but you were too afraid of rejection to pitch a character? Do you regularly suppress the urge to create your own roleplay because you're worried it won't attract enough interest? What other fears are holding you back. And for those of you like me, who view themselves as virtually fearless, what advice can you give to those who lack creative courage?
  14. Has Anyone ever been turned down because apparently the way you write is just utterly terrible when you know its really not? I have had people turn me down because apparently the fact that I may misplace my comas Is the most evil thing on earth. I have had people turn me down many times just for stupid reasons like that and its utterly annoying. It had happened to me more times then I can count. Now I know I'm not 100 percent perfect with writing but do I really have to be? Everyone is at different level of writing, some are better then others. No one is perfect with it. What is important with me though Is that I have fun with the RP Im doing, As long as I know what your talking about and things make enough sense then that is all I care about.
  15. What are signs of a good RP? Like when you read an RP description, what makes you say, "I want to play in that game"?
  16. I've seen lots of people center RPs around a certain time period, and I think it'd be helpful to have a thread where people can share their experiences on writing for a certain time period, and which resources they found helpful to use. What are some of the challenges you encounter? How do you work through them? What inspires you to roleplay in a certain time? Would love to hear about your experiences.
  17. Hey peeps, do you remember your first RP character? I do, and I thought it might be fun to swap stories. My first roleplay character was for an urban fantasy RP. This was before Avatar, but she could use all four elemental magics - fire, air, earth, and water. Her name was Izzy, and I used a dress-up doll site and photoshop to create a sprite for her. She wore everything I thought was cool when I was in middle school - goth clothes like fishnets and combat boots with neon green trim. You know that joke about "Timmy's first OC?" Yeah. That was Izzy for me. Snarky, wise-cracking goth girl. Must've gotten three posts in, tops. Great precedent to set. Next character was a living cloud of toxic poison who was totes emo, you can tell i totally took a step up in edginess. How about you guys?
  18. I was simply interested in the tropes that other roleplayers find the most interesting to play out with their characters, and thus the creation of this topic. Personally speaking, I enjoy the Face–Heel Turn trope. It signifies a great change in the character and for the types of characters I most enjoy playing it's a great way of developing them. Going along with this I also enjoy the Fallen Hero trope, as it is often a result of a Face-Heel Turn. I feel as though I enjoy seeing a hero become a villain more than a villain becoming a hero, though I couldn't tell you exactly why that is. So how about you guys? What are the tropes that you most enjoy seeing in characters?
  19. What was the first Roleplay you remember participating in, and what was it about?
  20. We all have one of those Rp ideas that can never be reached one way or another. What is yours and why? Mine would probable a DBZ/TWEWY rp because they seem so niche, and also DBZ ends up just being a bunch of dudes punching each other and never stopping. I'd also love an XCOM 2 RP, but IDK if that would work..
  21. One of the biggest personal nuisances on RPnation is where the rper joins & signs into an RP only to have them rarely respond. They are offline for much of the day and when they post on other rps, they completely forget about mine & will only make one or two posts on my RP in a single day. I've had this happen twice with two of my rps & it's annoying as fuck every time.
  22. So, I made a post in an RP, it's a zombie appocolypse in Present day Egypt, but it uses a lot of Ancient Egyptian mythological themes. In the rules i have listed "no godmodding" sounds simple enough right? But what if there were people in my RP getting power from old egyptian gods like Ra, but does THIS: (look on the bottom of page three for the problem post) Break my own rules? have I overstepped my GM duties? The rpers haven't replied to the post, not in the OOC and not a PM, the lack of response worries me and it would be nice to have some closure on this internalized matters.
  23. So I have always wondered if I'm the only one who finds themselves going on hiatus at near seasonal intervals or if it's just a me thing so to speak. The thing is will happen at least a few times in a year where I'll find myself either too busy in real life or just burnt out and without inspiration to roleplay. And then lo I go on another hiatus for a little bit until the inspiration comes back and I'm back and ready to roleplay. So my question is does anyone else find this happening to them? Where they get semi-regular bouts of writer's block so to speak ( wherein you just lack the motivation to post at all not for a specific roleplay ) Or is it really just something that only happens to me?
  24. experiences

I was thinking back on all my many characters I've played in the past, and I realized that despite the fact that I am generally a land person, terrified of the ocean and love fire, the majority of my characters have been water related. Sirens, mermaids, pirates, selkies. You name it, I've played it. So, I was wondering, do you tend towards a certain type of character, ie magical creatures, water characters, tribal characters? If so, what are they?
  25. What was the most memorable Roleplay you remember participating in? Mine was a CoD Ghosts Roleplay on a different site. It was actually a lot of fun and was one of my first Roleplays. And another one was on this website, and it was called Project Atlas or something like that and it was very neat. I liked it a lot even if it ended very soon. OHHH AND ANOTHER ONE ON THIS SITE WAS ABOUT A FUTURISTIC TANK CREW. That one was pretty cool too.
