Political, I presume?

Not particularly, if you're talking in the a nationsy/kingshippy kinda sense - what gives you that impression?

Poignancy, dear, is the finest of themes when it comes to detailed fantasy settings.

And, it's often strongly explored using politics — both on a large scale, and on a small scale, and sometimes with mercantile twists.

Detailed primarily in the sense of expected post length/writing quality, aha. I know what you're talking about but I've never been massively interested in these mega constructed political fantasies (and also tend to find them rather inaccessible on an RPing front).

I guess there's a bit of politics involved but it's certainly not focal (there is a key theme if you're concerned I'm not taking storytelling into consideration!) - I'm more interested in just playing out some well made characters in an interesting setting with a good conflict and an interesting magic system to play with :)

Impossible. Detailed doesn't often boil down to just writing quality or post length — the themes need to be strong and fresh, the plot needs to be solid and impactful, and the setting immersive and realistic. Many factors, never quite two.

Politics has always been a favourite of mine, and it generally indicates, when well done, that there's teamwork within the group — as it's near impossible without communication. Politics furthermore add tension and a bold twist to fantasy RPs. It encourages stress, weight, and gravity, which are key factors in good RPs.
