interesting read... I must say that I agree with the idea of getting help from psychatrists , they are professionals after all, however it is also a fact that there is an overuse in drugs and chemicals, as well as an out-of-bounds diagnosing.

Agreed, but as the article went on to say, to properly treat mental health and well being takes a team overall, especially depending in what is going on.

I know, I know. If the trouble I am having with my friend is any good example, mental health is an extremely complicated subject (though really, why wouldn´t it be, am I right?). I just believe techniques involving people´s mind and psychology would be better suited to dealing with most cases, rather than trying to deform their bodies.

I know pills can help. I have been on them in the past for both depression and anxiety. It is a tricky subject with a different answer for each person. I think it is unfair to ignore the use of medication. They are tools like anything else. And each case is unique.

I am not suggesting they are entirely rejected, merely that they are a last resort. Anything risking damaging someone´s health to save other health should never be employed so long as other options are available.

Psychiatrists do not often prescribe anything that will adversely affect the person taking medication. They work in coordination with the rest of an individual's medical team to ensure that.

With children, there are often instances of overdiagnosis, or being too reliant on medication, but this is also partially due to the fact that if a parent can't get their kids pills from you, they'll just find another psychiatrist who's less careful. It's risky to put children on medication because they can adapt to it or it can impact their development.

By the point you're an adult, that risk is lessened significantly. Unfortunately, therapy alone does not often work as well as it needs to, because there is a neurochemical problem that only medication can fix. What tends to be most effective for a lot of mental illnesses (depression and anxiety in particular) is dual treatment with medication and cognitive behavioral therapy.
