Yes, your experiences affect you, but that doesn't mean all that defines your identity is even physical, much less that it is located in the brain

Oh the smell, didn't bother me at first, but after the nose surgery....I have to wear some form of protection over my face from now on cuz the smells get enhanced and it literally stings

Nonetheless, everything is complex patterns and sequencing formed from the synapses of the neurons.

Yeah it'spretty bad. I have horribly bad allergies, so in the summer, there aren't many things I can smell, sadly, that was one of them.

But food smells so much better now -waters at the mouth-

But still guys... A bloody pink mass is not the nicest thing to look at after you had your lunch :/  cutting open an eye was cool, that's clean and all, bloody brains to too far for me...

It isn't mechanist. And the reason it isn't is because we can abstract. The capacity for abstraction is one that allows us to conceive things that have no equivalent in the physical world whatsoever. The amount of connections necessary for that would be infinite. Therefore, no material thing could encompass such capacity, which we unquestionably possess

Meh, I think it's just a matter of opinion.

Oh the amount of fish contents I've investigated, now that is a bad smell!

I'll ask the same neurology professor who told me what I know, get a confirmation from the one with a phd in the matter

And by the way it's not connections, it's electrical patterns meaning the same synapse can jolt more than once, the human mind does have a capacity, we just haven't reached it yet due to short life span a human has in conjunction with the amount of "storage" or in this case "pattern induced storage" has. No matter how hard we try we will not be able to max out the human brains pattern memory simply because we can't live long enough for it

Honestly, I'm a simple person. I'm happythat I'm able to have complex thoughts and feelings. I'm not to interested in the science behind it, I'm fine with others going into that field instead so it can be fixed if something goes wrong

I'm with Rayna here, I absolutely love biology and science and knowing how things work but some thing are too complex to understand for simple human beings, if it works then it works and if not we need to know how to fix it.

Haha well I'm a biologist

Whoa, didn't expect that at all! *sarcastic*

Honestly, cool job you got, I'm thinking about studying biology aswell but I'm not sure yet. Especially since there is no tolerance for a christian view in biology, everything can and has to be explained and there is no space for higher powers which kind of buggs me sometimes :/

Haha I'm catholic, hell I wear my Templar crosses everywhere I go. Trust me it's ok to be religious in the lab just don't go around telling the creationism story, that's how you piss off a scientist. Even the pope himself has acknowledged the existence of evolution

Well, that still doesn't explain an infinite capacity , which is again, what would be necessary for abstraction.
The Mechanist
The Mechanist
Abstraction is combination of what you can think of, something that might seem like a new individual thought is actually just a mixture of all your other thoughts, so the same synapses are taken and merely rearranged

No it isn't: as I explained, there is no equivalent. This isn't mermaid and unicorns we're talking about, where you take physical things and glue them together. We're talking the entirety of metaphysics, the idea of infinity and perfection , etc... none of those have any basis whatsoever on a physical level, they can't be derived from it. Morals, justice... none of that has a physical basis

gotta agree with that actually, there was some kind of phylosof that said that if you take away everything you can't be certain about (pretty much everything because it could all be a trick from your mind) then you can only be certain of one thing and that it that there is a 'thinking thing' something that alows you to thing, the next thing you can be certain about is that we have some idea of what perfection is like, even though we are not perfect ourselves, and that idea can only come from a higher power, which is God. according to him (I forgot his name) it's more rational to doubt about the existence of the chair you're sitting in as to doubt about the existence of God. it's funny, and logical at the same time ^^

just wanted to throw that into the discussion ^^

Again, everything is done through synapses, all of it an origin whether you believe it or not, everything has a capacity, except maybe the universe cuz it's theorized that even that is still growing. Whatever your BRAIN thinks of, synapses and patterns, whether it's two synapses jolting or a combination of two million sysnapses all jolting in a specific complex pattern where maybe 1.5 million of these synapses are jolting 25 thousand times jus to remind you to cover your mouth to sneeze.

Very well, the discussion is going nowhere. Yes everything has a capacity, but as I said , the one required for abstraction is infinite: hence the impossibility of our minds being merely physical.
