Idea Imperial court rp

Has anyone thought of or know of an imperial court rp. Where there is the Chinese emperor, his wife, his concubines, his children and all of the politics. You could also have people play the guards, maids, prime minister or princes serving him; it could be a wide spectrum.

I believe it would be quite interesting as there would be constant plots for power, deceit and betrayal. Yet there would also be love, growth and character development.

Just a thought, does anyone know anything like this or want to create anything like this?

Petroshka Petroshka seems like your area of expertize.

Yes. I'm going to be very blunt though, that's what most GMs hope for, then the RP just kind of stagnates. The reasons are varied, from the GMs leaving it too much to the players, to leaving too little to the players, to the sheer fact that there is little real reward or incentive to be the deceiver and the betrayer, especially when there is no guarantee against metagaming that gets overlooked far too often by GMs.

I'm no expert, just interested in it. Haha.

Also, that's quite disappointing, seeing as I feel like you could do so much with it. Oh well!

You can do much with it. However that itself is not, for any idea, enough to make it flourish. These kind of court RPs though, at least from my experience, are particularly notorious for nobody really being able to make head or tails of how to operate it. I do personally one of the biggest contributors has to do with people wanting to make some big intrigue plot with all these mysterious characters, plans within plans and hidden agendas, but then kind of expect to each be able to pull their own end and hope for it to somehow connect into a intrigue plot. Just a personal opinion there though.

I’d say there would have to be more than just the conflict of people scheming behind each other, like an overarching story rather than people with plans to betray.

There could be something threatening...etc, someone has a claim to the throne or a neighbouring empire or kingdom could be preparing for war. This could mean that throughout the whole rp there would be a twist or turn on the kingdom or the people rping.

I think it would be better for the setting to be more wide than isolated in the court

Maybe, I just feel like the inner people of the court would make it more interesting. That's my opinion anyways, I dont actually know how it would play out :P

If you don't mind me asking, why?

just that i think it would offer more variety in both character options and conflict, but im not saying it has to be, just what i think would work out better

I always love these kinds of RPs, unfortunately they usually fail because with a larger cast there is a higher percentage of people that just stop posting because the RP isn't focused on their character. I find the difficult part is finding enough people you can actually rely on to post and contribute to the RP.

I wish people realised that all characters somehow contribute to the rp. Like, each person has there own effect.

I did something similar where I played a prince and queen, one partner played a guard and the other partner played someone else. It was slice of life and kind of worked out well because there were only three of us and we took turns posting; I would post, played 2 would post, player 3 would post...then back to me.

I'm currently in a rp quite similiar, it has 5 of us but it works out pretty well

You have to be a strict GM for this kind of RP to last, and it can be a lot of work. They last a little longer if you have a list of a available (in depth) roles and a group willing to talk to plan the RP together. You can't just say Concubine #3- Maybe say Concubine #3- Mother of the Emperors's second eldest son who would do anything to assure her child is the next Emperor. Something like that.

You're obviously a lot more professional in this area than me.

So it would be like:

Emperor: *personality*
Empress: *personality*

Yea kind of. Less personality and their direct role in the RP. In my example you now know that Concubine #3 Likely has it out for the Eldest son and has probably assassinated a couple of people (or other children)in secret already. Now *her* son might not be in agreement with all that. Give enough info that they know what to do with their character but not so much that they feel restricted. :>

I get you now. I don't think I could create one as I'm a newer person and would probably do it in a way to irritate everyone.

If you ever start a RP though I'll definitely join Haha x

I'm already GMing two other RPs, but I'd be more than happy to help you expand on your ideas! You can also check on the nation building forums for help.

The problem people have is not that they don’t think they contribute- that they do. But whether their contribution has real weight or whether it is recognized, is a question that can make or break an RP for someone. If you were fine just writing content for yourself, you wouldn’t be role playing, you would be writhing a book. And this shows both in the direct recognition of actions and in the impact those actions have on what happens.

Not gonna lie, I love the idea of this.

However, it is very difficult to find players who are able to play out political dramas convincingly, in my experience. If you can get a few people together who you know are good at that specific kind of RP it could make an awesome setting, and I wish you good luck if you intend to go ahead with it!
