Awaken your Familiar. Become Awakened.
chris'coding
Ayrlosse has been the place to be for centuries. A stunning hub of magic, and where the first Archmage awoke his familiar - a lifelong companion, a culmination of the soul. For many generations to come, Ayrlosse would unlock the powers of familiars, learning the way of soul magic while creating a world that was perfect for humans and their magical companions alike.

Queen Cassie, 12th ruler of Ayrlosse has recently passed, leaving her confused heir to the throne. The 13th ruler of Ayrlosse however, has no familiar, breaking an important cycle and tradition. Every ruler before him had a familiar, and despite the Archmage's best efforts to awaken one, efforts have been unsuccessful. Initial worries were quelled, since not everyone has a familiar within them, but rumours and concerns are rising again. A ruler without a familiar is a sign of weakness, and should other nations hear of this, Ayrlosse will be in trouble.

There is, however, one hope for the heir. The Archmage has pointed them towards the Bloodgem, a powerful rune made from the blood of the Ancient Dragon. The story says that the Bloodgem will awaken a familiar in anyone - even if they're thought not to have one, and when nothing else can awaken one. The heir has requested you, and your familiar, to travel with them in search of the Bloodgem.

Do you accept?

Rules
chris'coding
a set of rules to ensure that the roleplay thrives:
  • Please read the lore tab, especially for a list of potential familiars your character can have! It'll help you understand the story better.
  • I am much pickier with character sheets if you want a dragon, phoenix, griffin, or any mythological creature as a familiar. Please understand that this is not a reflection of your skill - I just don't want everyone having dragons and phoenixes when it's not realistic in this world.
  • You will have to play both your familiar and your character.
  • This RP is literate. I do not expect novels with each reply, but one-liners are not accepted.
  • For a start, there will not be a post order. A post order will be determined if we find not having one to not work out.
  • Magical powers and Merge powers are open for creativity. Merge powers can be very powerful, but nothing overpowered is accepted. Think of the Merge power as an ultimate ability.

Familiars
Familiars are a culmination of soul magic that portrays itself as a sentient creature when awakened. Familiars can only be awakened by an Archmage, Seraph, or Soulweaver. Most people get their familiars awakened by the Archmage of Ayrlosse. Familiars can be portrayed by any animal and often their physical form reflects the Bind's (the person who the familiar belongs to) personality. While there is no difference between a person with a mouse or a small bird as a familiar, and a lion or bear, people have associated larger familiars with better qualities. The only real difference comes in any magical creature familiar - dragons, phoenixes, griffins, basilisks, hydras, and more. These are extremely rare, and often signify an extremely powerful mage, or a pure soul.

Familiars cannot be changed, but they fade away for good if the Bind's soul becomes corrupt. In times of desperate need, a familiar can merge with a Bind to lend them some magical ability. During a merge, the Bind's physical appearance often changes to reflect the familiar.

Disavowed Seraphs and untrained Soulweavers can incorrectly awaken a familiar, resulting in physical oddities of the familiar, to corrupting a soul and destroying the familiar.

The Bloodgem
The Bloodgem is a crystal made from the blood of the Ancient Dragon. It gave life to the world and gave it its magical supply. It is a very potent source of magic and is capable of awakening a powerful familiar in anyone. As such, it is highly sought after though it is protected by the Ancient Dragon itself, and he is almost impossible to find. The Bloodgem is said to always awaken a dragon familiar, though nothing has ever been able to prove this since no one as ever been able to access it. Should it fall into the wrong hands, it can also mean the end of all magic and all familiars.

It is capable of only awakening one familiar in a thousand years. It's location has recently become exposed, so many nations are scrambling for it in hopes of taking its power for themselves.

I'm a huge fan of this concept - count me in! I'm definitely thinking a high-ranking military official, maybe within some kind of royal guard?

Interested! Question; is there any in-depth lore on magic? I'd be interested in being the Archmage, if no one else takes em!

Glad to see so much interest!

animegirl20 animegirl20 That's okay! You can play 2 characters if you see fit ^^

DoggieSundae DoggieSundae The Archmage has an interesting link to soul magic! Give me a bit to write it all down since it's way too early in the morning right now and I'll ping you again!

DoggieSundae DoggieSundae Okay! So the Archmage is very interesting when it comes to soul magic. At any given time in Ayrlosse, there's only one Archmage and they are responsible for awakening familiars. Their familiar is always an Aura Dragon which looks different with each Archmage, but the Aura Dragon's duty and function is the same and there's only one of those in the world. (Soulweavers and Seraphs don't have them even though they can awaken familiars).

Magic in itself is pretty common across Ayrlosse in different forms. Incantations, divination, casting, elemental magic, etc. These are all fairly common and can be studied freely by anyone willing to put in the effort to learn, though Binds generally have an easier time learning any type of magic. Soul magic is unique in the sense that only Binds can learn it, and it's very tricky and volatile. Generally no one teaches it except one Archmage to their apprentice and heir to the title because of the danger Soul magic has.

Effectively, soul magic pulls its energy from the human soul, making it one of the purest forms of magic. It's not drawn from the earth or the environment, it comes from within, and has the ability to grant the user extreme power. Every time soul magic is used however, it pulls from the user itself. Excessive usage can exhaust the source, and once a soul uses all of it's magic, it can't regenerate any more, rendering the user magic-less (which is why it's not recommended for anyone to learn at all except Archmages).

Soul magic, when learned properly, can even result in the user being able to use someone else's soul energy, but currently only the Archmage and one other Soulweaver in Ayrloss really knows how to use this. It's... generally frowned upon to do this. But hey, if the Archmage finds a good reason maybe they can get away with it?
