"-looking for some muscle. I'm Memphis"

He glanced at the muscular blonde taking into account his height and physique then nodded. "You'll do. There seems to be more and more rowdy crowds at my bar these days. I could use someone who can be intimidating."

He acknowledged Erik's statement with a nod and then when he said that Maverick owed him he gave a small smile. "No problem sheriff. It'll be on the house."

He parted from the two men when he got into his truck and started it. It was a short drive to his bar and he happened to make it there earlier than the sheriff and the man named Memphis. He sighed as he glanced at the plastic cups littering the parking lot and the grime on the windows. He needed to clean this place up. Then what caught his attention was a familiar brunette. He recognized her instantly as his food runner a few years back, Everly. Maverick got out of the car and strode up to Everly and looked worried. "Hope you weren't waiting here long. It's quite dirty. I haven't- I haven't had time to clean it." He ran his fingers through his hair then he walked towards the bar to unlock it. "What are you doing back here?" He said as he tried to make conversation. He noticed the white paper on the counter of the bar with the numbers and figures of his loans and immediately grabbed it and tucked it away in his pocket.

Adrielle nodded slightly. She wanted to get the gunk off her hands. It started to sting slightly. Too bad she couldn't heal herself. She nodded her head slowly, afraid to speak to the newcomer. "y-yes." She took the towel and wiped it off. It got a little better but the ocean would help heal it. She squeaked at the mention of being left alone at the shop. Although there were so many friendly sea creatures here, the thought that someone would come in there and think she was an employee made skin prickle. "U-um I was thinking... actually I can definitely watch the store!" Why did she say that? Her brows knitted and she bit her lip. She tried to stand in at the counter and put on a confident face. "You go on. Me and the little guys will be fine!"

Everly had brought her camera out at some point to take pictures of the area. She hadn't paid much attention to it before in past, but looking at it now made her realize how beautiful Crystal Cove was. Though a small town, it's theme shops and businesses were a light and joy to look at. Perhaps her new found maturity was why she'd only come to see that. The trees, the birds, the way the smell of sea salt tickled her nose... she surprisingly missed it, regardless of the painful memories it reminded her of.

The roar of a truck's engine brought her attention back to the present. She watched with gentle eyes as Maverick pulled into the bar's parking lot, stepping out of the vehicle and nearly towering over her. Everly smiled. "Not at all. I actually just got here myself. And don't worry about it." As Maverick unlocked the doors and opened them, she took the liberty to grab her belongings and roll them in. Dropping them with a quiet thud just next to the entryway, she gave the place a look over. The sound of paper rustling brought her attention to Maverick, but hit tall frame blocked whatever he was doing. "I'm going to be here for a while actually. Boss wants me to spend a year at home before I start travelling for work."

The tanned woman stood on the outer side of the bar, already gathering some of the cups towards the corner. "How's the business been? I saw you were hiring." She quietly went to picking the cups up and setting them in the small sink behind the counter. "Should I email you my resume? Though I may be a bit too qualified to work here now. You might have to pay me with two meals a day instead of one." The woman said jokingly, the corners of her lips curving upwards as she went for a nearby rag.

The prep talk had been something that happened every single morning and it seemed to be practically ingrained into the mermaid's minds as they waited till they were dismissed by their leader. However, Celeste simply leaned against the wall of the bungalow as everyone broke up and went their separate ways. She didn't exactly have any plans for the day and it was hard to tell if she would the more time passed. She could look for a job in order to immerse herself in the human world, but that seemed like it would be a little difficult for someone like her. After all, she wasn't exactly the type of woman people were eager to hire. Running a hand back through her unruly hair, she retreated into the home and made herself some food. Celeste ventured back out on to the beach and seated herself on the sandy shores, enjoying the food and coffee she had prepared. It was essential for her if she ever wanted to properly wake up. The leader kept her calm gaze on the water, just watching everything that was going on above the surface, particularly the boats she noticed in the distance. The way humans fished was still a mystery to her, finding the whole thing rather cruel and inhumane due to the way they treated the animals. It wasn't even like they put them out of their misery. Shuddering at that thought, Celeste finished her breakfast and collected her things before she went back to the house to take a shower and get dressed. Might as well prepare for going out into the world and maybe learn a thing or two.

The ginger soon found herself wandering around the small town, popping into various shops that were open, simply to look at whatever goods they were selling and if any grabbed her attention. She didn't really talk with many people, other than the occasional conversation about how her day was going and things of that sort. Celeste soon found herself listening in on the conversations around her, finding the various topics interesting and the manner of speaking rather interesting as well since they differed from person to person on most occasions. Unlike many of the mermaids in her clan, Celeste had an undying interest in the culture of the humans and their society. Their way of thinking and reacting wasn't necessarily different from merfolk, but it seemed like that's all she had been told when growing up. Humans had been referred to as monsters by her parents and that's all she assumed they were. Monsters that couldn't go in the water without little portable islands. She of course later learned that these were in face boats but that was beside the point. It didn't take long for the topic of mermaids to be brought up, along with some talk about the odd people that had been at Tidal Potions the night before and caused a ruckus apparently.

Now that seemed to be a bit strange. She wondered if Erik had already been informed about the strangers. With her new information, the woman exited the shop and began walking in the direction of another shop to ask questions. These questions were mostly about the large boats she had seen that morning and she wanted to know if they had done anything wrong. Damaging the sealife was something that she wanted to be aware of. Being someone that viewed the ocean as their own, there was no way she'd turn a blind eye to anything happening to it. Though she had been walking a lot and it was starting to make her legs hurt. She wasn't used to walking such long distances in one sitting. Usually, she would swim from the bungalow or catch a ride into town with Erik. The woman silently cursed herself as she walked to the emporium, trying not to get sidetracked by anyone else she ran into on the way there. It wasn't exactly the best time to stop and chat. When she finally entered the shop, she was shocked by the fact one of her clan members was already there. "Adrielle? Why are you here?"

At the Everly's mention of pay his heart dropped and his brows furrowed. There was no way he could pay her. He could barely afford what he was owing to the drug gang. They had sent him a reminder already last week. He was going to be late on his payments and he knew the Ryu Skran wouldn't take too kindly to that. Moreover it was clear he needed at least two people to help run the shop. Recently he'd been not only taking care of the bar but the gang wanted him to return some of the favors they had given him. It was a troublesome situation to be sure but if he had a chance to take the money to pay for his dad to stay alive a little longer he would. He was sure his face betrayed his thoughts of worry and he was about to tell her he couldn't afford it when he noticed the curve of her smile. Relief filled his body and his shoulders which were tense before relaxed. The corner of his lip tugged upwards and he spoke. "Although I can't pay you double, you're welcome to work here. I'm looking for two more people anyways and I just hired a man who goes by the name of Memphis. He's one of the newcomers to the town." He picked up another rag and a bucket filled with hot soapy water. He dipped the rag, then rung it out and began to was the windows. "Thanks by the way for helping me clean" It was embarrassing to say the least that it showed how badly he needed help. His father owned this bar before him but when he was sick it had shut down. Maverick had opened it up again in his place.

When Adrielle saw the red haired mermaid in the shop she made a sound of delight and rushed over and gave her a enthusiastic hug. The smell of the mermaid washed over her and she felt comforted that someone she knew was there. She whispered quietly so only the Celeste could hear, "So much has happened." She gave a mournful glance towards the basement. "There was a stingray with a smashed fin and he had this green stuff on him. I healed him a bit in front of the humans" Adrielle said quietly, regret laced in her voice. "I couldn't just let him hurt and die. I don't think they saw anything though." She added quickly. She had always respected Celeste and thought of her as family, especially since she had lost her own. "Besides I thought I could help these creatures heal when no one was looking..." Her voice was hesitant but she looked over at the store. "Besides it's the closest I could get to the ocean when we're not allowed in there." Her voice was full of emotion as she murmured that as she hugged Celeste harder. She made sure all the words she said to Celeste wouldn't be heard by the humans. "The green substance is hurting Marine animals.. all kinds" she said louder so everyone could hear. But she left the last part for Celeste to decipher that it meant merpeople too.

"Not for the money huh? That's... noble of you, I doubt anyone else in this town shares that ideal." Aimlessly wondering is what you could describe Eleni's actions, but she stayed close to Elijah, close enough to hear him at least. Not only was he claiming to have more copies of this rare book (though if he's not lying, the book would be written in Greek, how would he be able to tell?) She didn't trust humans, it was not clear to them obviously, a means of survival, but curiosity may win over in this case. He had, three, maybe even four rare books, maybe he had more? Of course, this could just be a ploy by a creepy old man to have a pretty girl hanging around for no reason. "Your library huh? So you don't have every book in your collection out here? That's really an intriguing offer." Her voice got closer to Elijah, the woman poking her head around a corner to look at him. "So, is this a job offer? Or just an offer to share some knowledge?" Honestly, he didn't seem like too much of a threat, and if he became one, well, she was a shark after all. "My name is Eleni, by the way, Eleni Laskaris. I don't think I've ever actually introduced myself."

The Captain's House
Lighthouse Hill
Crystal Cove U.S.A
The Captain woke up to the smell of burning; He had been having a nightmare where a monstrous mermaid, the creatures he had vowed to hunt to the ends of the earth, was burning down his House with him and his Grandson's in it. The Captain immediately slipped on his slippers and rushed down the stairs towards the source of the smell, concerned that his nightmare was coming true. When he arrived downstairs, he heard the voices of his two grandsons arguing coming from the kitchen, where the smoke was leaking out. The Captain sighed; he knew what happened. He immediately stormed into the Kitchen and saw the toaster belching out smoke and his two grandsons, Hank and Saul, already dressed for the day arguing. The Captain immediately clapped his hands and said to the boys in a voice that gave away his life as a sailor,

" What in blazes happened here me boys! I told ya not to use the toaster!"
The two boys looked at each other before Saul, the younger brother wearing a pair of prescription glasses, pointed at Hank, the older brother with wearing a leather biker jacket, and said,
" Hank put a piece of toast in the toaster. I tried to warn him, but he did not listen."
Hank was about to say something, but before he could, the captain just clapped his hands together to silence him and walked over and unplugged the toaster. He heard Hank storm out of the house and ride off on his motorcycle. He sighed; he would have to do something about that boy someday. He then nodded at his second grandson and went back up the stairs and got dressed. He then went out of the house wearing his signature blue sweater and olive green pants. After a bit of a walk, he made it to the Book store. He walked in and said to Elijah, completely ignoring the Greek woman," Ahoy Elijah! My book on ships in a bottle come in yet?"

Elijah
Elijah moved from behind the counter and approached Eleni. He was only a few feet away from her now, standing there with his hands on his hips. "Both," he replied to her question about whether it was a job offer or an offer of knowledge. "
Harika. I am Elijah." He introduced himself to her, revealing he at least knew how to say something in Greek. Elijah wasn't full of himself. He knew he wasn't proficient in any language except English, but he knew plenty of words and phrases in more languages than one might expect. It came with the territory of having and reading books of every kind since the age of four. Before he could ask if she accepted his offer, his old friend barged into the store asking about his books.

"Yes James, your book has come in. It's the one wrapped up behind the counter next to my chair on the small barrel." He gestured to the counter. "Eleni this is captain James Waterson. He's an old friend of mine. James," he called out to the captain after letting Eleni know who he was, "this is Eleni. She's my new assistant."

"Θα ήταν ευχαρίστηση," She gave him a smile, it felt weird to exchange such a kind gesture to a human, and despite his comment earlier about the scales as jewelry, he seemed okay. For now, at least, only time would tell if this was going to be worthwhile. But, if he paid her it would be a more constant income than what she had been doing, though there was a very good chance she wouldn't stop picking up the odd jobs around town. Most people paid well, and the few who didn't, she quickly called Erik to resolve things if some mild threatening didn't help. And his attempt at Greek (though Eleni was fairly certain it was a Turkish phrase) shows he had at least some hope of a good relationship between them. Just as she was about to ask what she could help him with, a man she had seen around town a few times entered. The Captain.

The people in her clan knew of him, mostly his odd behavior at the beach, and his horror stories about merfolk. He was one of the people she chose to avoid, his grandsons not so much, but she was also wary of him. Thankfully, he completely ignored her, asking Elijah about a book on ships in bottles. That was a hobby of some humans that Eleni never truly understood, in her youth and even now. What was the point? They were nice to look out, but the hassle seemed to her too much for such a little reward. Anyway, Elijah answered his question and then proceeded to introduce her, so Eleni had no choice but to interact with the older old man. "It's nice to meet you Captian, " She said with a bit of a forced smile, briefly glancing around the room to avoid eye contact as he went for his book, then the woman looked back to Elijah. "So, what would you have me do first? The shelves are all nicely organized, and this place is very clean. Back problems don't stop you do they?" She said this with a playful chuckle, telling him not to take anything she said too seriously at that moment.

Evelyn started with the bar, wiping it down with the hot rag and gathering any trash or glass along the way. She kept a small smile on her face as she watched Maverick's expression ease up as he got her joke. "Memphis?" The woman replied with a hint of curiosity in her voice. She repeated the name quietly to herself, wondering if she'd ever heard it before. It was unfamiliar to her, but the Tidal Potions' owner must have predicted the question that was about to leave her mouth as he explained he was a newcomer. "You said he was 'one of the newcomers,'" she began, soaking the towel in the hot, soapy water before wringing it out. "Does that mean there are others?" Because she'd been gone for nearly two years, she wouldn't have recognized any new faces. It wasn't as though that didn't apply further back in the past, however. She did tend to keep to herself, so not noticing a new crowd was definitely something she'd do. Still... it was rare, and almost strange, for Crystal Cove to have more than a small family move in each year. Perhaps it was a tourist influx.

Of course!" Everly said when Maverick thanked her. Cleaning was something that came as a third nature to her, right after writing and photography. It was rather therapeutic and helped her take her mind off things, especially when she was feeling stressed and neither writing nor photography helped. "I didn't want to go home yet anyways. Mom and Dad got me the house next door, and I don't know if I'm ready to move into it or not." Her voice trailed off at the mention of her old home. It was common knowledge that she'd lost her parents and that the Davidsons took over the house, waiting for the right time to give it to her. The boating accident was still a sensitive subject for her though, and it was clear in the way her shoulders drooped slightly.

The woman perked up a little, quickly changing the subject and playing off her sudden shift in mood. "It's just so big, you know? Living in a house alone is much, much different than an apartment." She chuckled, finishing off the last table and moving onto the sink for dishes.

"Oh, right. When would you like me to start coming in for work?"

He gave her a friendly smile as the grime started to finally melt away from the windows. "In my 25 years of life Crystal Cove has never had newcomers that stay for more than vacation time. Except this past couple of years we got quite a big group of them. One of them is the sheriff, Erik, who's on his way over. The other is Memphis who I'm thinking is going to work as a barback/busser. He's got the muscle for it."

He paused and listened to her. Vaguely Maverick remembered something about her parents dying years ago. "Yeah I know the feeling. Every day I come back home and my Dad isn't there. He passed away about a year ago. I'm still learning to figure out what to do with the house and his stuff. Been so busy here at the bar."

That much was true. Every time he went back to his house it hit him in the gut. The house had long since lost the smell of his father, but all his belongings were in boxes. He hadn't even touched the boat they were working on together since his father had fell ill.

"I actually most of the time sleep here, just because it's so busy."
And the fact I can't have those dogs sniffing around my living area.. he thought to himself.

He turned his attention back to her question. "Can you start tonight?"

Every day that passed meant there was a higher likelihood of the Ryu Skral coming in person to ask for their money back and the warning had just come in a few days ago. That meant every hour Maverick was glancing over his shoulder to make sure they wouldn't cause trouble for anyone else but him.

"And what if they do?" He smirked in response to her little back problems comment. "What I need you to do first is familiarize yourself with all the books in the store. You're going to be reorganizing it all. Each section you organize, you get access to. I don't expect you to be done in a day. There are more books in this old building than hot meals you've eaten in your life." He chuckled to himself. Elijah could tell she was giving a forced smile. Everyone knew the Captain, but he noticed several people who never formally met him. Eleni was one of them. He was just as suspicious as the Captain but he had more tact. He was covert and perceptive, quiet and patient. The Captain was the exact opposite. Loud and aggressive and direct. Not that he disliked his old friend, he just knew that in order to get information you needed to be more clever than anything else.

A mess of brown hair and arms were soon the only thing that Celeste could process as she stood there. Naturally her arms wrapped around the smaller girl, listening to her carefully. The woman had more or less adopted a motherly role towards Adrielle without even meaning to. She merely had been attempting to be a good leader that bonded with those in her clan and somehow she ended up with a close relationship with the girl. Oh well. It was nice to have someone depend on her. "Green stuff?" At the mention of some chemical or substance caused the woman to stand up a little straighter, blue eyes trained on the various marine animals she could see in the shop. What type of chemicals would harm animals that badly? She didn't know a lot about the commercial fishing practices that went on in the cove but she assumed they weren't exactly the best or safest for anyone. "Did you get hurt?" When Adrielle mentioned that the substance was hurting animals of all kinds, she figured that she was saying it was hurting the mermaids as well. "Has someone else been infected by it?" It felt like so much had happened while she had been leisurely walking around and enjoying the morning sunshine. Looks like morning walks were canceled and would be replaced by patrols or something. She didn't like the fact that things were happening to the clan members while she wasn't there to help them out and neither was Erik. "Are you okay? Are you staying here at the shop?" If the younger was going to stay there, Celeste felt inclined to stay as well, worried that something would happen to her if she left for even a moment. "I should probably contact Erik and explain what's going on down here."

The comment had been a slightly mumbled one, mostly due to her being lost in her other thoughts, attempting to make sense of the situation. It was just so odd. How could something hurt a marine animal that quickly and also hurt a mermaid after it tried to heal the injury? It didn't make sense. She never heard of something like that. It gave her a headache as she stood there, mind reeling as she went through each scenario, trying to determine the most practical one. But there was no practical solution that she could come up with. She lacked essential information which was really frustrating in itself. How was she supposed to learn more about what was going on if she didn't even know what caused the issue. "Do you have any idea what could've caused such a strong reaction? Like a chemical or something?" She wasn't a healer but Adrielle was, so maybe it was possible to determine what type of thing inflicted that much pain and damage to not only the ray but also to an adult mermaid. It must be potent and rather dangerous, which meant they'd have to figure out a way to remove it without damaging themselves or anything else.

At Celeste's question the bundle of hair and arms looked up. "Truth to be told..." she winced when she touched her arm, "My arm hurts... but the substance? It stings quite a bit" The part of her hand where the green goo was on had turned an angry red and if one looked closely they could see the shimmer of scales underneath. "I don't know what it's made of.. only it stinks of humanity." she wrinkled her nose at the thought. "hmmm... Not anyone I know of yet has touched it except for me.. but I guess we'll see at the gathering tonight." She gave a little shiver. "We might have an outbreak on our hands if we continue to come in contact with this stuff. Moreover I don't know truly how to heal it besides using my powers. I don't know what it is so I don't know what herbs to use besides the general ones." She tipped her head and her slightly wavy brown hair cascaded down her shoulder. "I guess going to the bookstore should be the first place to go to." She glanced back towards the door. Hopefully no one was listening to their conversation. "I'm watching the store for the humans.. I had hoped maybe I could keep an eye on these little guys..." her voice seemed to falter as she looked towards the basement. "They're down there... I just... I just wanted to feel close to something like.." her throat closed up and and she choked, unable to finish the sentence. "A-anyways... as for the substance.. it must be a chemical of some kind. It must strip the skin or at the very least irritate it considering it's forcing the scales to show on my hand." Her hands did sting but worse they glistened slightly if someone were to look at it in the light. She'd have to be careful considering where she was.

Memphis explained what happened to Erik. His hands were looking worse than they had earlier. He would have to go back to the bungalow to recover. Erik drove up to the bar and stopped. He stared at the girl in the bar he could see her through the window from outside. Why does she look so familiar? He watched as she spoke to Maverick he was sure he’d never seen her before in town. At least he didn’t think he had. She turned and he saw her eyes he realized he hadn’t seen her in town because he hadn’t met her in town he met her that day. He had gone too close to the shore that day and saw a boat. He was young and didn’t know what to do so he had simply watched the family from a distance, they were so happy and the young girl had such a sweet smile but her eyes were what kept him watching. He’d never seen a human he had been told how dangerous they were but her eyes looked so friendly. He left the family to go see more of the reef and when he came back...Eriks grip tightened on the steering wheel. He found her barely hanging onto life her friendly eyes had closed shut even though he didn’t know her he worried they’d never opened again. Her mother had begged him to save her daughter before succumbing to the inevitable. He had pulled her to the beach and held her telling her she’d be ok and reassuring her that help would come as if she could hear him. He’d stayed by her side till it was dark when he saw human lights and heard people nearby. Against his better judgement he yelled to them for help and then when they turned he slipped back into the ocean. He watched them as they ran to her and stayed and watched from the waves until the ambulance drove away. He never saw her again. He always wondered what had happened to her on top of a million other things. How could he face her after so many years had passed? He instructed Memphis to stay out and walked into tidal potions.

“Sorry for the wait Maves Memphis and I had to talk he’s not feeling well so I’m taking him back home I can’t stay long I just wanted you to show me where they guys were and walk me through what happened really quick but I see you have a visitor.” Erik stared at the woman in the bar. He wondered if she could even recognize him? She’d been unconscious and he had two eyes last time. He was also a lot younger. He abruptly and awkwardly stuck his hand out to her for a shake “Erik...Sheriff Erik.” He corrected himself “you don’t have to call me sheriff just Erik is fine.” He was always easily calm and composed he wasn’t sure why he felt so flustered introducing himself but he hoped she didn’t notice.

Elaine followed Rowan out to see the damage. It was too late for the fish that had been trapped in the net but Elaine filled a small vial with the green substance maybe she could figure out what it was and what it did to the marine life. Elaine stared at the large fishing boat “They can’t get away with this. They don’t stay out on the water at night so I think I have a plan. Meet me here again tonight when it’s dark!” Rowan took Elaine back to shore where she rushed back to the shop. She Burt’s through the marine emporium doors “Sorry that took so long Adrielle!” Elaine rushed up to her not even noticing Celeste she showed her the green vial “this is the substance those fishermen are using to injure the fish I might be able to figure out what it is I just have to study it a bit.” She turned and finally noticed Celeste frazzled Elaine set the vial down on the register desk and quickly fixed her hair smiling and putting on her customer service routine not realizing she’d been there for a while “hi there welcome to marine emporium! My names Elaine feel free to go through our wares and let me know if anything catches you eye!” After she finished her spiel she read the room and realized that the woman and Adrielle seemed to know each other “oh uh...do you two know each other already?” She asked trying to play off her entrance. That’s the second bad introduction in one day what are the odds!

Chase was not usually one to pay attention to morning lectures. He pretended to, of course, even made a little miming motion of taking notes, but as soon as Erik was out of earshot he immediately forgot everything he had just said. After all, while Erik may have been the clan leader, Chase had been here first, and he knew how to survive in the area. He'd been in Crystal Cove for about ten years now, more or less, and had more of a rapport with the townsfolk than most of the other folks in the clan combined. He trusted his own instincts more than he trusted theirs, and while he had a few things he was worried about (the fishing boats getting closer was a bit troubling) he tended to focus more on the day to day than worrying about the future.

Normally he'd head to the hospital right after the usual morning lecture, nevermind going in the water, but it was his day off today, so he decided to take his time. Rather than going for a swim, though - he preferred to swim at night, honestly - he took out his bike and made his way into town.

He didn't really have any sort of destination in mind - the bar wasn't exactly open yet, as much as he was a regular customer, and the little shops weren't really very interesting when you lived in town full time. He was thinking of just going out to eat when he spotted a coworker walking down the street, making his way towards the Marine Emporium. He raised his eyebrows - Pierce had only been in town a few months, but he didn't seem the type to enjoy knicknacks. regardless, he was somebody that Chase had had an interest in for a little while now, and he slowed down as he drove up beside him, grinning.

"Hey, Pierce," he called out, and Adrian looked back at him for a moment before furrowing his eyebrows in distaste.

"Patterson," he said as dismissively as he could, but Chase was not dissuaded. Instead he parked his bike at the storefront, hopping off and jogging over to the other doctor, who frowned but didn't bother to chase him away. Which was progress, considering how some of their other meetings had gone.

"Didn't think you were the type to enjoy shops like this, Pierce," he says cheerfully as Adrian pushes open the door, a frown still marring his features. He doesn't look too annoyed so much as he does a bit uncomfortable, and Chase figures that's a good sign. He follows Adrian into the shop, offering a wink and a salut to the small group already gathered inside. "Hello there, ladies," he says as he slings one arm around Adrian's shoulders, and the younger doctor frowns and tries to shake him off.

He really does not want to be here, honestly, but his father had been bugging him for a souvenir ever since he had moved into the small town, and Adrian couldn't put him off any longer. He had hoped to avoid interacting with the staff and other shoppers as much as he could, though Chase's grip around his shoulders keeps him in place.

When Adrielle heard the shop owner's voice she jumped away from the red haired mermaid and immediately hid her hand behind her back. She glanced at Celeste then at Elaine, and bit her lip. "So how did the fishing trip go?" The shop owner filled her in on her mini adventure along with her bringing back the green vial. "If you don't mind... could I have some and could you also tell me your findings?" Her voice was the most confident it had been all morning even though Adrielle was shaking in her boots asking that question. "Welcome to Marine Emporium!" she blurted out at the two men sounding almost like a half wild cry instead of a welcoming greeting.

"Celeste and I are very close" she said and Adrielle's chest puffed slightly as she stood to her not so very tall height. "She's my family." When her eyes landed on Celeste they relaxed and she gave her a warm smile. It was obvious the mermaid felt at home with the female leader of the group.

Throughout the ride, Kian explained why his hands were green. He'd mentioned doing a brief scouting along shoreline and talked about how they were more boats than usual. Additionally, he brought up the fact that the traps used to ensnare their brethren were laced with some green poison. It stung his right hand as he talked about it, but he tried not to describe it as nothing more than a small annoyance. His hand hand, however, beginning to look red a raw. It looked similar to when he would train with his spear but much more unpleasant. Besides, it appeared as though both Memphis' hands were appearing worse than his own.

When they arrived to the bar, Kian decided to go inside with Erik for lack of better judgement. Perhaps it would've been smart to stay in the truck like his friend, considering the festering of his right hand might bring some unwanted attention. He wanted to meet as many people as he could though. Knowing all the faces in town gave him a better idea how to act in the future. That is, if something were to happen.

Keeping his one injured hand in his pocket, he offered the two humans a nod and smile while holding out his left hand. "Nice to meet you. I'm Kian Wilkstrom. Sheriff here picked me up along the way and updated me on what's going on. With Memphis being unable to work, I'd be happy to take his place for the time being." He waited for both humans to take his hand before retreating to Erik's side. Glancing around the place in attempt to memorize it, he couldn't help but notice the way the aura around his clan leader changed slightly. The male was normally so calm and collected, yet he almost seemed flustered when he introduced himself to the woman.

"Can you start tonight?"

"Tonight sounds fine to me," replied the brunette as she began spraying down the glasses. She was about to soap up a sponge, but the jingle of the bell up front tore her attention away. The door swung open and two tall men strolled in. One was wearing a striped teal shirt with brown curly hair and hazel green eyes to match. The man's freckles seemed to shimmer under the late morning sun and it made Everly wonder if he was wearing glitter or something, but she laughed off the thought. The other man, in contrast, seemed a bit more formal. It was clear that he was someone of authority and she had to assume he was the sheriff when she saw the star on his uniform. There was something else peculiar about the man too and that was how murky one of his eyes were.

The sheriff, Erik, was the first to introduce himself. The man shot his hand out for a shake, which threw the female off for a second. She quickly caught herself and stumbled out from behind the counter, quickly wiping her wet hands with a clean towel. "Oh, hi." Everly chuckled lightly, placing her small hand into his large one. It was calloused and tan, and she could see the faint outlines of scars along his wrist and arm. "I'm Everly Davidson. I'm a native but I haven't been around in a while, so that's probably why we've never met. Maverick was telling me all about you and...?"

Everly took her hand back as she stood in front of the two. The other brunette quickly introduced himself as Kian Wilkstrom, which blew away any prior confusion. All throughout the introductions, however, she couldn't help but glance back at the sheriff. There was a strange feeling in the back of her chest and it was one that she couldn't describe. She'd wanted to confront the feeling, but she didn't even know how because of how unfamiliar it was to her.

Maverick noticed the man with freckles come in along with the sheriff, whose badge glinted in the light. The back of the bar was still a mess, piled with glasses and cocktail mixers along with the keg being empty. Microbreweries with their sour patch ipa and chocolate beer were now in. Nobody just wanted a simple beer. Still Maverick was doing it old fashioned although he was trying to adapt to the new change in taste, especially since tourists were requesting things like: mike's hard lemonade and other strange alcohol choices. Not that you'd hear much of the news outside of this small town anyways. Most people here concerned themselves with everyone else and not the world. This was their world, their oyster if you wanted to call it that. He grabbed one of the wooden kegs and carefully washed it out with a sprayer before refilling it with some of the classic beers. He had a large fridge that he had delivered with some of those adventurous ipas. Maverick made his way to the back carefully putting back the alcohol such as the tequila, gin, and vodka and mixers such as the blu curacao back on in the lower shelves.
"I'm Erik"
Maverick heard the slight hitch in his voice. The sheriff must be nervous. Why Maverick couldn't tell especially since he was busying himself behind the counter. His brow furrowed. He hoped it was some infatuation and it wasn't because the woman was a criminal. Maybe she had gotten in trouble at university? Either way Maves was up to his neck in trouble. At the introduction of another man Maverick turned around and faced him. He looked about his age, and hopefully he had a good head on his shoulders. "Yeah. I'm looking for some help. Maybe you can be on shift tonight. I can watch how you guys do. How much experience do you have being a bar back/busser?"

Everly has soft warm hands that were much smaller than Erik’s. He shook her hand gently as if he might accidentally break it. Even though he wanted Kian to wait out in the truck he was relieved to have him in there with him. Along with Maves even though it still felt odd seeing Everly again at least he didn’t have to be alone with her. “Kian is a really hard worker I’m sure he can help you out a lot around here.” He assured Maverick anything to help Kian get the job he owed him that much he redirected his attention to Everly again “I’m not surprised we haven’t met I moved here a few years ago but I’ve always kept more to myself and believe it or not I used to work the night shift most of the time before I made Sheriff.” It was one of the reasons he got promoted to his position. Before he made sheriff there were others he worked with but most of them worked day shifts so it was practically just him on the night shift and that got him noticed quickly by his superiors. There were even less police now then there had been because of all the people moving away to the big cities instead. “Maves could you just point out where everything happened and then I’ll be one my way.” He still needed to speak with Hank and now he needed to message Celeste as well about the ships out there he glanced at his watch and it was already almost 1 now.

Elaine pulled out and second vial and poured a bit into it for Adrielle “there ya go I think it might originate in the ocean somehow because it doesn’t really dissolve but it’s not sitting on the top like oil would be. I don’t know hopefully. I can figure it out just needs a few tests run.” She smiled at Celeste they didn’t really look related but Elaine knew family’s came in many different forms “it’s nice to meet you!” She exclaimed to the woman. Giving her a warm friendly smile. She looked forward tog erring to know these two woman they both seemed wonderful. Elaine stared at the strange substance she’d be running some tests on it later but for now it was a mystery. The door rang as two more people walked in. Elaine smiled and greeted them at the door “Hi there welcome to Marine emporium please browse our wares and let us know if you need any help or suggestions!” She turned and gave Adrielle a thumbs up before walking back to the group.

Chase blinked and raised his sunglasses when Adrielle greeted him, a little surprised.

“Oh, Adri! Funny seeing you here,” he said cheerfully, glancing to Celeste next. “And Celeste too. Didn’t think you two were into the whole tourist trap thing.” He eyed the green vial, having only really caught bits and pieces of their conversation, and not wanting to make assumptions about things without the whole story.

Adrian tried to shrug off his arm again, but was once again unsuccessful as he inclined his head politely to Elaine. He was hoping to just browse and get out of here quickly, but he had a feeling that that wasn’t really going to happen.

He did notice Adrielle hiding her hand behind her back, though, and while he insisted to himself that it wasn’t his business, the red hint of skin that he could see brought his doctor’s instincts up to the surface, and he couldn’t ignore them. He didn’t really like to get involved with patients - especially patients who were involved with Chase, of all people - but he could never ignore somebody obviously injured when he was trained to help.

“Is your hand alright?” He asked, a little awkward, before clearing his throat. “I’m a doctor, so...” he trailed off, and Chase leaned around him to get a better look at Adrielle’s hand. Seeing a hint of scale visible, he quickly turned back to his coworker, putting himself bodily in between them.

“Oh! I can take a look at that, Pierce. This is my adorable little sister after all,” he said as he let go of Adrian and swung his arm around Adrielle’s shoulders instead. As always, lying came naturally to him, though at least in this case it was /sort of/ true. They were all in the same clan after all.

Adrian wrinkled his nose, not looking entirely convinced.

“I wasn’t aware you had siblings,” he said dryly, and Chase shrugged his shoulders.

“Yeah, there’s a whole gaggle of us. Have I never mentioned that before? Anyways, Adri, this is my coworker, Adrien Pierce. Pierce, this is Adrielle and Celeste.”

At least the motion of siblings had distracted Adrian from Adrielle’s hand, that was a good thing. God Chase was glad he only called Adrian by his last name, or he’d mix up those two for sure.

There was a lot going on in a short amount of time which made Celeste's head practically spin. She barely had time to register all the faces and voices that were soon filling up the emporium, all talking to her and bringing things up. God, she really hated when people crowded her. A vial was handed to Adrielle and the red-headed woman curiously looked at it, trying to figure out what it could be. It was so peculiar that she really had no idea what it could be. "It's nice to meet you too. I wish we could've been introduced in a more relaxed way." Her gaze shifted towards the two men, specifically the one that she didn't know. They were quite close to the pair of girls and she didn't know how to feel about it. The fact that Adrielle's hand was having issues made her nervous and she wanted to usher both of them home. "Well, I think I'm going to head out. I came here to check on Adrielle and I did that. Are you going to be staying here longer or do you want to head back home with me?" Celeste looked at the younger woman's hand, worried that she would want to stay in order to look after the animals. That could be risky though. She was worried that someone would notice or she would try and help another infected marine animal and without knowing what the substance was, Celeste was worried that it could hurt the clan healer more than before. She really needed to talk to Erik and figure things out. "I'm going to head out now you two, I'll talk to you later."

Celeste said goodbye to the owner of the store by waving slightly, exiting the building as soon as possible. Once she closed the door behind her, she pulled out her phone and dialed Erik's number, lifting it to her ear as she began to walk back in the direction of their home. She was really worried about what would happen if any other of the clan members came in contact with the substance. What if healers wouldn't be able to do anything since it was hurting them as well? Her mind was racing as she walked, fingers nervously messing with the hem of her shirt, wanting to just talk with Erik in order to figure out what she was supposed to do. Maybe they should just bring everyone back in order to see what the situation was like. What about the scouts and warriors or the mermaids that went swimming in the morning? Was everyone that went swimming affected by it? Was it a pollutant that harmed you without physical contact? Celeste wasn't normally someone that panicked, but she couldn't help it. When there was something in the water that was not only harming the sea life but also the people that were pretty much her family, there was no way she could be calm about it. But she was still calm in the sense that she wasn't freaking out and yelling at Erik to get his ass home. No, she was more concerned about the fact that none of them knew what was going on. How were they supposed to treat it anyway? What happened if the fishermen were all using things with that thing coating it?

"Maves if you just point me where everything happened..." Maves looked up and flicked his chin towards the left back corner. "Over there... in the darkened corner." It was obvious that the left back corner was the place with the least amount of light as one of the bulbs had mostly gone out awhile ago. He planned on replacing it but... like with everything it had been postponed. It still flickered dimly, casting a orange light over the table. Damn I gotta upgrade the bulb He made a mental note to himself. Just as he was waiting for the sheriff to ask any further questions two figures in the doorway caught his attention. They're not the men from last night... he thought as he didn't immediately recognize them. What he did recognize was the emblem on their clothes. It had a dragon circling a skull. The Ryu Skral he thought dimly. He looked towards the two new hires. "Everly it's probably been a few years and I'm sorry but I need you to hold down the bar tonight." He said quietly so not to be overheard by the sheriff. "Drinks are on me for the sheriff tonight. Also... teach him the ropes" he said with a nod towards Kian, "Usually I'm here but it's a special circumstance. It won't be too busy if it's a usual night." He quickly stepped towards the sheriff and gave a small pat on the shoulder. "I gotta get going. Let me know about your findings."
Maverick swiftly walked over to the two men in the doorway, his footsteps barely making a sound.
"Gentlemen" he said as he approached. He stopped in front of them and put his hands on his hips.
"State your business" Both of the males were clad in a sports jacket, a white button up, faded blue jeans and nice shoes. One of the men was about 2 inches taller than Maves, a sandy blonde, and he smoked a cigarette in one hand. His grey eyes focused in on Maverick, with something akin to excitement, yet the look was almost predatory. Lean yet muscular. "Name's Jack. And this here is Brady." The blonde said as he pointed to the slightly shorter man. Brady, who was the same height as Maves was a brunette and had a stocky surfer's body. Definitely can't beat him in a fight.

"Maverick we'd like you to accompany us as we discuss reimbursement."
"Alright.. let's take your car."
He walked out in the sunlight with the two men and entered the green Escalade with tinted windows.

"So let's get this out of the way. Where is the 1,000 dollars you owe this month?"
Maverick paused, his adam's apple bobbing before finally speaking.
"I don't have it."
He had made another payment for bank. That's where the 1000 went.
"We always demand compensation. In many forms."
Jack gave him a wolfy grin as they sped towards the outskirts of town, no man's land really, and parked.
"This should be educational for you then."

Time skip 1 hour later

Maverick groaned as the two men deposited him unceremoniously on the beach. His torso was bare except for his jacket which covered the cuts on his back. He felt the sand go into the openings on his arms and back and he coughed weakly in an attempt to get rid of the sand in his mouth. Hell's teeth He felt like he couldn't even draw a breath without his head exploding with stars and his chest feeling like it was about to burst. His right leg didn't hurt as much as his chest but there was probably a heavy bruise there. "Here's your face pretty boy.." Jack said as he traced a finger along his jaw and held up a mirror. Maverick's face was black and blue along the cheekbones with an ugly split lip. "You also got some nice bruises and cuts all over your body. I made sure you'll remember me when you're dressed to go out. You also have a few broken ribs. I think I like my handiwork" Brady announced and patted Maverick on the head. The two men threw his grey shirt over him and departed. The blood from the cuts on the front of his torso seeped into the fabric of the tee. Maybe it's better if I just end here.. he thought to himself and allowed himself a small smile. He made a motion to get up but his body screamed in agony and he fell back onto the packed ground. Nobody will even find me out here... Maves glanced as he saw the edges of his surrounding out of the corners of his eye. He had never really been here, which wasn't saying much considering he'd never been to the beach all that often.
