Once he was dragged and cuffed, Lucas was placed back in the summoning room. He watched as light was oozing out of hands forcing wounds to close or concussions to vanish and a fricking stone monster was placing mortar on the wall. It didn't even look alive, almost like it was mindlessly running its task. He wanted to do something about this crazy dream he was having, but ultimately nothing changed and if he was trying to change or stop a dream, he really was either experiencing it or someone had slipped him some crazy weird hallucinogens.
Lucas rolled his eyes at all the stuff the summoner said. He just wanted to go home at that point. His wretched apartment served him better than being bound. Lucas looked around the room, looking for escaped until he heard Scarlet mention they were in another world. His jaw just about dropped the floor and the shock made him a little bit sober about his situation.

"I second what the emo looking chick said," Lucas announced to them. "This is extortion, this is bullcrap! Take me home, I've got rent to pay!"

Lucas sighed as he sat down and turned his back. He needed a minute to process all of this. He just wanted to wake up and hope it was just the side effect of some drug given to him when he wasn't looking. What in the world was this? He would take the world's worst hangover over this reality, at least the hangover would end.

One of the imperial knights gave Erika an even glare, hands folded behind his back. He walked forward, then looked at her up and down as if assessing her.

"Take off the handcuffs that are preventing you from destroying more Imperial property? That are actively preventing you from running off to be picked off one by one by the enemy? If you weren't so lucky as to be a hero, you would have been assumed to be a terrorist, and killed on sight. You're lucky to have these handcuffs. You should be thankful for having them."

He stepped back after that and gave the Head Summoner an even glare, this time radiating malice. "Your incompetence manages to bedazzle me, Tilghman. Not only do you summon nonhumans as heroes, but you also manage to make them into thankless incompetents. If this were up to me, you'd be in the underground tunnels of an adamantium mine, getting acquainted with the shaft of a pickaxe, and the business end of a bullwhip."

"Seven-nine, calm down," another Imperial knight said, stepping forward. "This is neither the time nor place for this."

The man, apparently designated 'seven-nine' didn't appear to take offense, simply lowering his head and stepping back into the row. "Do your thing, then."

The knight looked in Matai's direction, then scanned over the rest of the heroes as he stepped out. "You can call me Imperial Knight Seven-Seven, or just Seven for brevity. The situation is simple, so let me explain before we proceed.

"Over the last twenty-nine years and seven months, a magical ritual was continuously taking place in this chamber, conducted by Head Summoner Tilghman in the name of the Empire of Artesia. Every thirty years, the ritual is finished and another one is started immediately. The result of each ritual is the summoning of a group of heroes from other worlds. Something, however, clearly went wrong: non-human heroes have never been summoned before, and it is still several months too early. We do not know why this happened. Any questions?"

Matty listens impassively to the banter between the knights and the head summoner. She finds herself moved to pity the man evidently responsible for bringing them here and then spends several seconds contemplating if it's pity she feels, how pity is classified, how and why she's feeling emotion at all, and whether all of this is some extremely bizarre simulation.

Once asked for questions, the Elven Monk straightens in her robes and speaks:
"1. I would like a geopolitical analysis of the Empire of Artesia made available to me, preferably with any writeups of bordering nation-states. I'd also like details on your economy, sorted by state or region, broken down to listing all communities with more than 100 residents.
2. A history of your magic would be useful. Preferably in print form, though oral history would be acceptable if it's the best alternative.
3. Please describe the role that 'heroes' play in your culture and history, along with the prevailing beliefs on what this current group of heroes is expected to be or do.
4. How many other worlds are there? A catologue of past heroes and their points of origin would be useful.
5. Are humans the only species in the Empire? Or on this planet? If not, a demographic study of their population distribution would be useful.
6. Please state your chain of command or organizational operating structure. I'm especially interested in how the Imperial Knights and summoners report to or are answerable to the civilian government."

After another moment of reflection, Matty nods in satisfaction that her initial slew of queries is sufficient for her situation.

[/div][/div] [div class=Content] Scarlet faded into her desperation, she was tired and all too willing to fall over. As though trying to focus was holding her breath underwater, and breathing was closing her eyes and letting her mind fade away. She took another breath and held it.

It make Scarlet quite uncomfortable to watch one of the men attack Philabert as though this was all his fault. She remembered him sitting on the floor right after the wall had been destroyed. There will always be terrible people, but it would seem the empire might not be the best allies after all.

She listened through the explanation the man named Seven gave. Realistically it wasn't any different than the explanation that Philabert had given earlier. While this most likely validated the head summoners words, it was clear they were still keeping information from them.

Matty gave her long list of things she wanted. She opened her eyes in confusion, as though to wonder why Matty would even want that information. Which led Scarlet to a better question of who Matty was before she came here. Either way Scarlet brushed it off for another time.

It was unlucky Seven would answer Matty's questions. With the comment that they were heroes, which gave them some form of insurance as to not be killed for actions that otherwise would be considered taboo, she decided to ask about the thing Seven hadn't talked about.

She walked up to Seven and made eye contact him to pull his attention away from Matty. "How about something simpler? Why did you summon us? What are we supposed to do?" Scarlet asked. "And I can't imagine you intend to have these on us at all times?" She lifted the handcuffs up. "Exactly how are you supposed to ensure we don't do anything reckless after you take them off?" Scarlet still couldn't conceptualize escaping but it was obvious what she meant to anyone who could.
