So you've just taken your trip to the nearest recruiter, eh? Poor sod doesn't even know the horrors of-

Sorry, didn't know that the commlink was on. Welcome civilian, we hope that you'll find your time in the military to spiritually help you, and emotionally better you. To your left is the outfitting office, please put on the equipment and head out the front door. A sergeant will ship you to the nearest battlefield.

In all seriousness, that stupid idiot isn't going to last five minutes on the battlefield. You wanna know why? Because their planet has adopted the 'Mass Assault Doctrine™️'.

"What is a 'Mass Assault Doctrine'?"

Why, thank you for asking! A 'Mass Assault Doctrine' or MAD, is a style of warfare which is centered around the usage of high amounts of manpower. "Arion, what does that mean?" You ask, well, to put it in simple terms, a MAD is a type of strategy in warfare that exploits a countries large population to be used as mediocre footsoldiers. Under-equipped, barely trained, and unable to read, these millions of unnamed heroes are willing to die a most gruesome death in the name of their motherland, сука блять!

"Gee golly, Arion. Why is it so effective?"

Though a commissar should shoot you for that obvious tyranny against the motherland, a MAD works so well because it shows the enemies of the motherland that we are willing to scramble and crush eachother to kill them. It shows that we are more patriotic, it shows that we are willing to ебать свою задницу с винтовками! Ahem, sorry.

A MAD works so well because a planet that has an overpopulation problem can easily get rid of it and also fight their enemies off. A MAD employs wave tactics, and 'melee over range', and even death or dishonor! If morale is getting low, simply shoot any deserters, that will get your soldiers to work building trenches!

"Well that seems very fine, but how do I survive in battle?"

Ha! You are most certainly getting hanged for conspiracy after this! So your officer has just ordered chemical weapons be fired, you put on your mask, of course, laced with asbestos to stop you from telling lies thirty years from now, then he gets the coordinates for the enemies entrenched station and fires artillery. Now, you would think that they would wait to charge, but thats where you're wrong. Now, your officer tells you to charge!

So, you're running across a gas-filled, shelled no-mans-land, and the enemy trench is a kilometer away, what do you do?

You weren't issued a weapon, so you take your dead brother's of course! Now you're sprinting through a field, with screaming and the death of fallen heroes all around you, you finally reach the trench and empty your magazine into it before jumping in.

Now comes the fun part, insertion! You are going to take your weapon, hold it by the barrel and run through the enemy trench beating and killing as many as you can find! Now that it's all said and done, your officer shells the position for good measure. Ending yours and many others lives in a beautiful firey last hurrah!

Now, seriously. If depicting MAD combat, it should be about as brutal as this, when talking about savagery on a battlefield I would hope this is a good tutorial. For those of you who do nation-building RP, you should definitely add this to your retinue of tactics and strategy for war. If you've got the population for it, it makes a great scene.

Thanks,

- Arion

There are so many reasons why this is a very cool scene, and I think that making war scenes more or less as intense as needed can add a lot to the conflict, but also so many reasons why this is the most tactically unsound and ridiculous in any modern setting much less any scifi setting.

Obviously it nets you a much more exciting, visceral and emotional scene than what is projected to be realistic scifi warfare. (Boring-looking ships with tinfoil armor calculating orbits and lobbing unmanned nukes, unmanned drones, or RKKVs, or invisible lasers at each other from light minutes away, ECM, ECCM etc.) So often science fiction has to strike a balance between suspension of disbelief and reality to keep things interesting. (Anywhere on the sliding scale of scifi realism between Star Wars and the Expanse is generally safe territory for your scifi, although star wars is a bad example because in 75% of star wars battles logical tactics go out the window.)

The point of warfare in a scifi setting is to show that alien scum who's boss how the advanced technology affects the tactics and strategies involved in warfare. If you want to have trench warfare involved in a scifi setting you basically need to remove from your setting modern day tech like armored fighting vehicles and air support much less future tech. At which point you might as well just write a world war I story or create a fantasy/alternate universe with world war I levels of technology. But war often breeds innovation and is a constant cycle of opposing factions attempting to develop weapons and tactics that will counter the other until one faction is defeated or gets tired of fighting. So unless you've got some Orwellian government pulling the strings and making an endless pointless war to keep the populace occupied, and stifling innovation, its infeasible at best a terrible tactical choice that would get the general/commander of any sensible faction discharged or mutinied against at worst.

Well, the only real option here is to JOIN CHAOS!

Great post, by the way. MAD is truly a hell on whatever planet you're in.

But that is not what MAD means. MAD means Mutually Assured Destruction, and is used to describe conflict that is guaranteed to destroy both sides. In reality, most cases of MAD go down to nuclear warfare, in sci-fi antimatter warheads, crazy bioweapons, planet destroying orbital bombardments and superweapons, as well as nuclear weapons are in play. What you described is attritional warfare doctrine, which relies on using larger manpower, resources and industry to whittle down your enemy and break him.
