Realistic or Modern The Cop and The Girl

She nodded as he talked about nice and mean birds, she knew this, but it felt nice for him to talk about it. "You're a nice people" She said affectionately. "Thank you."

As they walked and he offered his chocolate she couldn't help but giggle. "You're funny." She said gladly taking the chocolate bar and eating a little bite. She saw her group and prayed that he wouldnt see them, not wanting to have to go back.

“Haha, thanks!” Rafael cheered in response to this sweet little girl calling him nice and funny. That had to count for something, right?

“You’re welcome.” He said, responding to her thanks.

“Hey, let’s see about getting some more from that fella over there!” Raf said, pointing to the candyman and drifting their path towards him. He knew he'd have to reunite Luna with her group eventually, but that didn't mean he'd have to step away.

"Ok" she said, but as enthusiastically, he was putting her back with her group want he? She followed him, holding his hand all the way

She then looked back where he first found her and saw the really good candyman. "Hey look, there the best candyman!" She said pointing toward a skinny guy wearing a hoodie, who looked like he hadn't shaved in a month.

“Oh, okay?” Raf said, a little curious about the guy she was pointing at. “Well, let’s give him a shot, then.” Needless to say, he was a little baffled. But maybe she knew him? Maybe that was her dad..?

Still, he wasn’t about to let his guard down. And if this fella was up to no good, then Raf might as well find out, right? He glanced down at his sidearm, just to make sure it was ready. As they approached, he puffed up a bit, ready for a confrontation, should it come to that.

He didn't notice them upon approach, and as they got closer Luna seemed to brighten up. "Hi Steven!" She said.

"Luna! Good to see you again sweet...." He stated to say before turning and seeing a small man mountain next to her. "Who's you're friend?" He asked nervously.

"This is Rafael!" She said as if that were enough to introduce him.

Steven. Rafael made a mental note of that. Luna and Steven seemed to like each other enough, so that’s a good sign…

It tickled him that Luna took the liberty of introducing him.“ Hi there! I’m Officer Rafael Navarro. Just keeping Luna here safe while she tours the zoo.” He patted her shoulder, then offered a handshake, smiling.

Steven looked rather nervous for a second but quickly hid it. "Nice to meet you officer." He said taking the hand he offered. "Now Luna, you couldn't have come here for more candy could you?" He asked teasingly. "You look like you've had at least... 10 lollipops already!" He said poking at her stomach with her giggling in response.

Raf chuckled at their antics. Steven didn’t seem like such a bad guy, and Raf felt a little guilty for judging him on appearance so quickly. “Luna, here, said you were the best candyman!” He said to Steven. “So, how do you two know each other?” There wasn’t a bit of aggressiveness in his voice – he was genuinely curious.

"Well, I come to the zoo fairly often, and so does her group" He said indicating the troop of children. "But her group is riddled with bullies, I guess they start young eh?" He said looking rather sad about the whole thing. "Anywhose I expect you found her much the same way I did." He said looking down at Luna. "Was it Tommy again?"

Luna nodded "Yeah, him and his group of friends." She said, resentment obvious in her tone.

He shook his head. "Well you know what we say Two times the color...."

"Two times the awesome." Luna responded.

"That's right" He said giving her a knuckle bump. The phrase indicating her unique eye color that awrded her with much teasing.

“They do start young...” Said Raf, sighing and thinking back to his own childhood bullies.

The obvious affection between Steven and Luna was endearing to Rafael. He was glad she had someone supportive in her life – every kid needs that.

Raf turned to Luna and asked, “So, Tommy and his friends… Do they give you trouble often?”

"Yeah... they always make fun of me and do mean things to me." Luna responded sadly.

"I know whatll turn that frown upside down" Said steven, before reaching into his hoodie and pulling out a lollipop wrapped up. "And this time it's red, but it tastes green." He sais miling and handing it to Luna.

She took it, her frown indeed turning upside down, and immediately stuffed it in her mouth. "Mmmm this is so good! Oh! and since Rafael is a grown up you could give him your really good stuff right?"

Steven automatically looked panicked again before hiding it behind a smile. "Well I would but we're fresh out, sorry."

“Well, it sounds like I might need to have a little talk with Tommy and company.“ Raf stood tall, looking in the direction of the herd of children. Not too far off, he caught sight of his police partner, Marlon, stuffing something into his pocket. But Marlon wasn’t in uniform – he was undercover in civilian clothes.

His attention soon turned to Luna and Steven. His gaze locked on to Steven in particular, and asked with a little laugh, “Oh? What kinda really good stuff do ya sell?”

Steven looked down at Luna then back up at Rafael, before swiching to Luna again ."Hey, sweetie, wouldya mind grabbing one of his lollipops for me?" He asked pointing at the other candyman. "They're not as good but they're part of the recipe."

She looked at him curiously "Alright" She said before going to get one.'

"Alright im a lousy liar and you already know whats happening so lets get on with it."

Raf watched Luna as she left, off to fetch another lolly. Recipe? He wondered. He wasn’t aware of any kind of lollipop-using recipe…

Marlon stood off to the side, trying not to laugh.

Turning his attention back to Steven, Rafael shrugged. “Just askin’ what you’re selling, mate.”

This has to be one of the nicest cops I've ever met. "My bad, but anyway, the uhh really good stuff you're referencing has just a little but of." He made a drinking motion tilting his head back. "So I don't let the girl around it." He said honestly.

Luna was waiting in line, luckily her group hadn't noticed yet.

(Sorry for how long it took, it's been pretty busy.)

“Well, okay…” Rafael scoffed slightly. “I’ll let you off with a finger wag. You gotta have a license to sell that.”

“It’s a victimless crime,” Raf said under his breath.

Rafael, himself, had done far worse things in violation of the law. And besides, this man seemed to Luna’s benefactor, in some way or another. Raf couldn’t quite piece together their relationship, but he knew that if his mum caught him running around with a guy that looked like Steve, she’d put the kibosh on that friendship.

He leaned in a little closer to Steven, and whispered, “So, do Luna’s parents know about your little friendship?”

Steven looked sadly at him. "Oh... you don't know?" He said looking at her, making sure she wasn't in range. "Her parents aren't in her life anymore... I'm sure you've figured out shes got some rough things, Her parents were highly abusive." He said. "That scar beneath her eye, its because her dad took his beloved pet and sicked it on his less beloved daughter."

“Nah, I just… Met her a few minutes ago.” said Raf, splitting his attention between Steven and the child. He bit his lip as he listened to what Steven said about her parents. His eyes darted back to the sweet little girl.

Yikes.” Those were the only words he could conjure for a minute. “Does she have a place to stay?” He turned to Steven, asking with urgency.

He shook his head. "As far as I can tell she stays at the orphanage with the other kids." He looked sadly at the girl. "It seems there are more kids with sad backstories than happy huh?"

“Yeah, it sure does…” Rafael’s heart sunk for her. Though his own childhood wasn’t perfect, he knew he was one of luckier ones. He, at least, had an adoring mum, a stable home, and food on the table. He paused, wondering if his salary could support a child – after all, he was barely an adult, himself.

“Do you think she’d… Want a home?” Rafael asked. It all felt so surreal.

Steven smiled, for a cop this guy wasn't bad, and he appreciated Luna so that counted for something. "I think all she wants is some one who loves her, I'm afraid all she's got is me..And you now I suppose too." He pulled out a small flask, before looking at Raf. "I promise is legal."He said before taking some and offering it. "Want some? I promise despite my appearance I actually have a house and brush my teeth ." He said with a smirk.

“None for me, thanks.” Raf chuckled, “I’m…”

Not old enough is what he wanted to say, but he caught himself.

“…I’ve gotta drive later.” It was technically true. “Thanks for telling me about Luna. I’ll see what I can do for her...” That wasn’t a hollow promise. He smiled and gave Steven a nod and a wave, then set off towards the little girl waiting in line.

“Hey, Luna, how you doin’?” He said as soon as he got beside her.

"I'm doing good, though this line is really long, I don't mind though." She said all matter of factly.. "did you get any of Steve's really good stuff?" She asked inquisitively.

"Ah, he was sold out." Rafael said to her, glancing back at Steven. "But that's okay!"

He mulled over in his mind how he should broach the subject with Luna. "Hey, after we get some candy here, is it okay if we sit down and talk about something? You're not in trouble - I just want to see how I can help you." He said with a reassuring smile.

She looked worried when he asked to sit down to talk, that meant you did something wrong. But then he said she wasn't in trouble and she diddnt know wether or not to believe him. "Alright..."
