The Overlord
The day after Hector got that strange letter another was sent to him telling him that he was accepted and was to be ready to go in a week from that day. It didn't say anything about direction only that he just needed to focus on getting to the school, whatever that means. He decided to humor the idea and set to get things in order just in case somehow he did wind up actually leaving. Funny thing was he didn't have much to do so he decided to take a break from writing and see if he could catch up on some reading. One week and over 2000 pages read later he was walking out his door wondering if he got punked. After about 10 minutes of walking down the street he pulled out the letter to see if there was some kind of clue to what he was doing wrong. All it said was that he had to just focus on getting to the school and nothing else. Calming himself down from how stupid that sound he caved and tried.

Removing all thought from his mind he focus on the school and imagined that he was standing at the front door. He did notice immediately something was off as the sound of the city was gone. Opening his eyes he was standing in front of a castle like the ones you would find in a fantasy novel. He wasn't alone though as there were other some that looked as surprised as him and others that acted like castles like this were an everyday occurrence.

What did I get myself into?

that week flew by in a flash, she busted her ass to make enough cash to take with her as well as pack, she had received a letter the day after her initial letter telling her just to focus on getting to the school, deciding that she had nothing much to loose, she put her cell in her bag, emptied her mind, closed her eyes, and imagined the illustrious school, but something was off...now it was quiet...to quiet, she opened her eyes to see the same castle school from her mind, but there were others now...who were they...and more importantly where were they? she checked her phone, it seemed to have no connection "shit..." she mumbled and set it back into her bag which she pulled closer to her, unsure of what else to do but wait.

after a few moments, she decided to at least meet someone while she was here so she turned to the boy not far from her (hector) and worked up the courage to speak "hello... I'm Juniper" she introduced herself, Juniper was soft-spoken but able to be heard.

Xavier was walking around his apartment while brushing his teeth , passing the door and walking into his kitchen , he stopped halfway and walked backwards . As he peeked around the corner he saw another note , he went over to it and picked it up , he threw the note on his bed as he finished freshening himself up for the day before getting his bag , he was planning to go to an old friend before he read the note , the note didn't make sense to him but he picked at the words " Focus on getting to the school , really , no directions , nothing " he said as he grew quiet still picking at the words in his mind before spacing out , the only thing that got him back to reality is when he noticed that his apartment floor isn't his apartment floor anymore , he looked around seeing others , he then looked up at the castle "ha....ok so either i am going mad , this is a dream or i spaced out to far thinking about this letter " he thought to himself as he looked between the letter , people and castle

Adelaide was starting the next morning with a cup of tea when she walked by her door and noticed a letter underneath it. She arched her brow and leaned down to pick it up and realized the paper was similar to that of the one she read yesterday. She put her tea down and opened it.

"Next week? Thats pretty soon.."

She wondered if she should play along with this game, though deep down it unsettled her in a way that made her hands shake slightly. She sighed and put the letter down and looked around her small home and thought that a change of scenery wouldnt be bad and if anything maybe she could go somewhere next week just to get her out of the house. She picked her tea back up and walked to her room to sort through her belongings.

The week went by slow for her as always since she hardly ever left the house, money she had gotten over time after the incident was enough to get her by for a long while and she only ever worked for her local bookstore every now and then to keep her busy. She looked at the suitcase she had packed in her one hand and the letter in the other.

"Alright lets get going then"

She walked out her front door as the morning mist greeted her face and blew her hair away from her patched eye, the leather cool against her face as it cooled with the wind. She glanced back down at the letter after she adjusted her scarf around her face. The directions were easy enough to follow since clearing her mind was something she had gotten the hang of, and as she walked down her small dirt path and out her gate she closed her eyes for a moment and hoped maybe she would land somewhere better. As she opened her gate and let go she felt the wind around her die down for a moment and what shocked her was a feeling of unfamiliarity around her. She quickly opened her eyes and looked around her. At first she noticed the castle and was in awe at what stood before her, so much so that she felt her knees go weak but then she noticed the others as well.

"Ah.."

Her mouth was open but no sound came out as she looked between the others.

Time passed very quickly for Marcus when we was enthralled in one of his books. There were certain aspects in the books he was reading that he needed to go back to previous books to double check their consistency. He often spent days like this, curled up on his bed with a notebook and 4 other books open around him. His mom opened his door and a placed a letter and a long box, which contained a poster he was also waiting for, on his night stand. He needed to rest his mind so he opened the letter from the fanclub. "I only ever think about the school and all the other places in Edgehold, so this shouldn't be hard" he thought to himself. Was this some sort of camping trip for diehard fans? Or maybe a secret convention that was invite only, he would definitely bring some of his original works to share. "One week! I can't wait!!"

He laid back and closed his eyes, picturing the illustrious school that he'd love to attend, he'd give anything for this to be real. Suddenly his bed felt hard and cold, the quit of his room replaced with the sounds of a soft breeze and voices of strangers above him. He opened his eyes and found himself lying on hard stone staring up at people who had looks confusion etched into their faces, a few with fear, even fewer with excitement.

Hew tried to collect his thoughts, he must have dozed off and this is one of his million dreams. If that was true then his fatigue and back pain from sitting hunched on his bed would have been gone, he was definitely awake! This is it, it was real NOLMERRA'S ACADEMY OF MYSTIC ARTS!!! He belted out a shout and began kicking his feet and rolling his fists while rocking on the ground in a fit of excitement. Now some of those looks of confusions may have had something to do with him.
"Wait" he though to himself, "I thought I had a week to get ready?". He realized that his poster wasn't due to arrive until the week after the books. It seems in his ferve, he lost a whole week to studying and continuity checking his books, which didn't surprise him, and his mom sort of moved at her own pace and wasn't to social with even him. None of that matter, who cared if he didn't have a single thing prepared, he would start fresh here. He began to become increasingly aware of just how hard and cold the stones under him truly were at this point.

The next day there was another letter waiting for Iris when she got home. Opening it without any ceremony, reading while walking, somehow avoiding the furniture. A small snort escaped her "A lot of details there, not easy to get lost like that", her hand hovered above the trash can, ready to throw out the strange letter. Staring through it for a few moments without letting it fall, Iris sighed, her free hand coming up to push her hair back " To hell with it, is not as if I have something to lose". Keeping the paper secured in her grip, she pinned it to the fridge.

A week had passed since that. Iris had had the last day free, and the same for the current day. It was raining in London, not that it would be a surprise to any of its inhabitants, the weather was never the reason people moved to the city. Iris was sipping her morning coffee, a very strong, short and black expresso that made her feel closer to being a person, sitting on the kitchen counter, staring at the letter on her fridge. She knew today was the day and she had done little (or even nothing) to prepare. Putting the cup down, she grabbed her phone to call her sister. "Hey stranger" a smile adorning her lips hearing the familiar voice "Yeah, you know how it is, I've been busy." "Nothing much, just work." "Yeah." "No, I just called to say that I... miss you and love you very much." "No, nothing. I just don't know when I'll be able to talk to you again." "Give mum a kiss." "It's okay I don't really want to talk to her." "Bye love." Putting the phone down, she jumped down and grabbed, the now almost cold, coffee, still staring at the letter, moving closer to it. Touching the corner of the paper with two fingers, her mind going back to the strange instructions on how to get to the school. Taking another sip, her mind still trying to figure out what the words meant, Iris closed her eyes without noticing. When she lowered the cup, the surprise was almost enough to let it drop. She wasn't in her little apartment anymore but outside, somewhere, surrounded by strangers. "What the actual f**" her eyes wide while trying to process what was happening. She was certainly glad she had the good sense of getting dressed before having breakfast, this would be another kind of challenge with her pajamas still on. Around her, some other people had reactions very similar to what she was experiencing. Well, that is, except the dark-haired guy on the floor that was... well something.

With a small smile playing in her lips, she offered him her hand "That doesn't seem the best place to be, unless you enjoy being stepped on. Please tell me that's not the case?" she had a clear voice, humor dripping from her words and expression and a clear British accent.

Mark reached out his hand and accepted the aid from the pretty British girl smiling down at home. He began to question whether this would be his new best friend, or the love of his life... or maybe she's his rival. He smiled at her and looked around at the world he found suddenly sprawled around him, all while still holding her hand. This was too much for him, everything was true, if only his father could see it. His thoughts raced, pulsed quickened, breath thinned and the sneaking suspicion that this was more that just the fanclub creeped over him.

Xavier stood around a bit of a short distance from the rest as he watched more appear , it took him a little longer to realized that he wasn't going mad or dreaming , this was real but now his curiosity is biting him . This was something from fantasy shows and Novels , how is it possible , though he did have to admit now that magic was more real then anything now because ....well hell , how did he get here when h could strictly remember that h was in his bed room , spacing out as usual to now be standing in front of the gates to a castle which now that he thinks about it , has never seen anywhere .

The thought still tugged at his curiosity as he looked around . The people all seemed shocked at first but for the most of it started getting the feel of the place . He looked around before a girl appeared in front of him . He stared at he for a while as he waited for her shock and awe to subside a bit as well before approaching her before stopping next to her " Unbelievable isn't it , a great castle , strange scene and a few confused people , in all honesty ,this wasn't how i expected my day to go " he said as he turned to her , slowly extending his hand to her " Xavier D. Zekoris " he gave up his name to her with a slight smile

Adelaide had let go of her suitcase at some point though she wasnt sure when and only when she finally started to come back to reality did she hear someones voice next to her. She turned quickly and held a bandaged arm to her chest instinctively. Her eyes met a silver haired young man with his arm outstretched in her direction, Xavier huh? She looked him up and down for a moment, her amber colored eye curious but hesitant.

"Uhm..hello, sorry I dont really..do handshakes"

She was consistently labeled as rude for that reason but she had her reasons and felt she didnt owe anyone an explanation for it. So instead she offered him a swift head nod in acknowledgement.

"Im Adelaide Ravencroft, you dont happen to know exactly where we are do you? I was just assuming the letter was a joke..that or as soon as I left my house I was hit by an oncoming car and died"

She noticed the man beyond Xavier on the ground being helped by another young woman and wondered hos he could be so excited over something like this. No doubt it was exciting but also a bit terrifying at the same time and she wondered for a moment if she left anything at home that she would have to worry about later.

he brought his hand back but didn't take offense "all fine , i don't really shake hands either , i thought you might but it's fine " he said before look at the castle and back " No , i have been trying to figure that out myself , i thought it was a stupid prank hence why i didn't really hesitate to throw it in the fire once i was done filling it " He said as he watched her eyes moving past him , he followed her eyes as they landed on the guy .

"Yeah we all gave different reactions to this place , im surprised that he could be so excited about the place " he said as his eyes wandered around to everyone "though one thing is bothering me at the back of my mind , why just us few , are there more coming , are their more inside , you know questions one asks when one looks around " he said before his eyes landed on the girl again , taking in the features , the way she stood , the eye patch and the bandage . To him it looked like life his her way to hard , harder then it should hit anyone ever.

"You know at first i thought that this was really a dream but i know i don't do lucid dreaming so this has to be real , it's strange when you think about it , just get a random letter , complete it's instructions , only to get another one that ends up teleporting you to a place you never seen before .....anywhere" he said as he viewed his surroundings a bit more

Hector had been trying to figure out what had happened to him. Now he was 100% sure that that some kind of magic had to be involved with him being in front of a castle, which definitely was nowhere near his home. He didn't really have anything else to go on but hope that someone would come and explain something, anything for it all to make sense. On a different note he was taken away from his thoughts when one of the girls that was there walked up and introduced herself to him.

"Oh well hello nice to meet you I guess," he said try to not make an awkward laugh. It had just occurred to him that he really hadn't spent much time socializing with others lately. I really need to get out more, well if I ever figure out what's going on that is.

"So, uh I can guess that you might have an idea to why we are here? I mean if that letter that I got was true then it looks like we got accepted to some kind of school but I wasn't even expecting this." Hell burning the letter didn't make any sense but he couldn't of imagined that he would wind-up in a place like this.

"Oh I'm Hector by the way I should of said that first."

Iris looked closer to the guy now that he got up, somehow she felt like his demeanor matched his looks, staying silent as well, debating if she should break contact. Holding hands was never really her thing but somehow she felt like this strange guy was using the touch as a lifeline. Not having the heart to do it, Iris looked at the people around more carefully now. Two others not far from them seemed engaged in a conversation and she could use some answers and something told her that the young man holding her hand didn't have them.
Turning in the couple direction, she pulled him with her, speaking softly "Let us find us some answers".
When she was close enough to be heard she gave a small smile to the two of them "Hi! Does anyone have any idea of what's going on? My hallucinations don't look like this normally... or feel..."

Xavier looked around more before he heard someone behind him "eh...oh no , believe me the two of us are just as confused as everyone else though i guess i should give him credit , he seems to be the most excited person here " Xavier said as he looked between the 2 " I'm Xavier by the way , just to clear that up so we don't just seem like complete strangers " he said as he looked around " I don't suppose they will let us in anytime soon , i mean they got us here so now what , should we expect a letter to appear in out pockets or something now " Xavier said as he looked around a bit more " Hey , have you two noticed ...or at least find it strange that it's only us few here .....maybe um a bit paranoid but if this was suppose to be a university , wouldn't there most likely more then just us " he asked as he sat down on the grass , looking up at the other 3

Soon enough the others were joining and Adelaide could feel the tension rise inside her. It had been too long since she was around people and usually when she was around people it was nonstop talk of her past and how she should get out more or find a boyfriend, etc. etc. and just as the tension in her rose it also faded. She realized that she didnt know these people and they didnt know her which meant no talk of the past and only talk of their current situation.

"Hes right..I have no idea whats going on right now and it does strike me as odd that we seem to be the only ones out here. Obviously we were all brought here for a reason if we all got the same letter, I just wasnt prepared for it too actually work"

She looked back towards the enormous castle and also to the large door carved into its face. It was closed yes but that didnt mean that no one was inside,"

"We could..always try knocking on the door? As straightforward as it might be it may just be the only thing we can do right now until we figure out where the person is who sent us those letters"

Juniper at first, thought he didn't hear her since she was quite soft-spoken though she jumped a little when he responded "oh...uh...no, I have no Idea why we're here...or in fact where here even is" she said, looking around, a tad unsure what to do next, she was pulled out of her thoughts by more chatter around her, the same question seemed to be floating around 'how do we enter?' she thought for a moment "maybe we should just push open the gate?" she suggested, cautiously approaching the gate then turning to the others for a little reassurance before giving the gate a decent shove, she was quite strong for such a fragile-looking girl

( Quinlan63 Quinlan63 , I'll leave you to decide whether or not the gate opened)

Hector had to admit that in the back of his mind he wasn't sure if Juniper was even going to budge the gate even a little. But it seemed that in some weird combination of effort on her part and some luck the gate opened effortlessly. On the other side they were met by a women who looked about her mid to late thirties wearing a dress suit and glasses. She seemed to had been waiting for us all to open the gate. Before he could ask even a simple question she held a hand up singling for them to not speak for the moment.

"Welcome, I am Summer Elffire the assistant headmaster and I would love to welcome you all to Nexus Academy of Magic. There is so much that needs to be told to you all but I think we are going to need a change of venue." Clapping her hands they all went from standing outside the gates to sitting in a classroom of some kind. Well that is what Hector thought since there was a chalkboard and desk everywhere. The only things that didn't seem right was that there were symbols sliding across the walls. Hmm just like magic.

"Well as it most like has come apparent to you is this academy is no ordinary university but for those special enough to be born with the gift to use magic. Obviously that might be something to adjust to but as of today you have all join the magical community."

The way she talked about magic and the way they went from standing outside to sitting down in desk only made Hector more curious to learn more. In fact he was wondering how it was possible that he never discovered that he could use magic before even by accident.

Xavier had his attention turn to the gate opening "well now , i guess it makes sense that we should have knocked " he said as he stood up and looked at the other 3 " i guess it's time for answers then , shall we " he said as he walked closer to hear the woman , after her short speech they all appeared in a classroom , only difference from a real classroom was the magical quality that gave it it's charm , no magic pun intended , he looked around to see that everyone had the same face as to when they arrived . It didn't take long before he focused on the woman again as she started speaking . He words did play around in his head a bit , though he would think that he would recall himself being able to use magic but it's been interesting so far , might as well try to believe that this was really happening , he looked back at the others " Please tell me you all heard the same sentence that is just heard , are we here because we poses an ability....to control magic " he asked the other three

Marcus was still analyzing the situation with a huge grin painted across his face. "What happened in the books after Delreid arrived at Nolmerra's Academy" he drilled himself. "UGH! that was so long ago back in the first book." While he oftened switched between volumes, it had been awhile since he read through that one, it was a bit mundane and cliche riddled with content that was later undid by great works of magic. "Aha! He was bathed in flames to see if he really had magic". That thought both excited and frightened Marcus, as much as he wanted to partake in the trials, failing was something you only did once.

While he was in his own world, apart from the new world that he found himself in that was drastically different than the old world, the pretty girl who's hand he still had hold of pulled him towards a growing group of bewildered people. She asked if they knew what was going on and none had an answer, only suggestions on how to obtain one. He had an idea, at least he had a most devote wish he masqueraded as and idea, "This was the world of Edgehold!" he wanted to exclaim "We are candidates for a most prestigious magical community where you either succeed or die a failure!" He often had to curb back his enthusiasm for fear of putting people off so he held his tongue, they would soon see.

The gates opened up and while he was excited, he held onto Iris' hand, a gesture of futile protection. If she stepped forward and was bathed in a cleansing inferno, she would either stand glorious amongst the ranks of the chosen few or his budding love life would come to an abrupt and unsatisfying end. But instead of a towering fire, there was a woman, similar in many ways, but a lot less dramatic and grandiose, at least thus far. She was speaking, a welcome address from a headmaster, typical but still enough to make his eyes water.

In a blink, he was in a desk, hand disconnected from Iris', it palm was cold and suddenly incomplete, he really really hoped that she wasn't his arch nemesis. One of the boys leaned over and asked a question. Marcus was all to ready with a response "There are those who souls are remnants of the energy of long collapsed stars, these individuals reside in a shell bearing an appearance to those around them. These supernovas in flesh carry a potential, one that can lead them to shine and illuminate all that is dark, or they can collapse in on themselves, under the wait of a wasted destiny and leave no trace but a black hole of an existence." He recited proudly, that was almost work for word the flavor text on the inside of the dust jacket of the first book. It was obvious to other people that Marcus was clearly a joy and hoot to have at parties -_-.

Xavier sat and listened to the man , a bit unsure of what he was saying but took that as at least a reasonable answer , even if he didn't understand it "you know , you seem to be about the only one that is more excited that confused to be here ....dare i say it's at least a bit reassuring that someone isn't confused to be here , you are quite an .....interesting character you know that ..... still haven't told me your name though , you seemed to go into your own world out there when we introduced ourselves " he said as he looked at the others " so ....each of us has .....well was born to use magic .....saying it a bit out loud still doesn't completely make sense but we are sitting in a classroom .....inside a castle that never surfaced anywhere on the world map , with someone in front speaking about it and magical runes floating about the room so i guess it doesn't shock as much anymore if one slowly starts getting use to the idea " he said as he turned his head back to the guy " but back to you quickly ......as i said you haven't really given me your name yet " he said as he reluctantly , despite not being a hand shaker , held out his hand to the man to at least get a name from him and not....a clever , well thought out phrase that would act as the replacement for the actual answer of his name .

In typical Marcus fashion, he forgot to interact like a normal human being. He wondered if he should give him his real name or his handle, afterall, he didn't have to be boring quirky Marcus Lasure here, he could be someone new, it was obvious that his quirks were a good fit for what was going on. On the other hand, he wasn't aces at coming up with a lie and sticking to it, that's why a lot of people found him trustworthy. He didn't think he could pass under his handle as Desmond Champagne anyway. Desmond was debonair and mysterious gentleman, traits that Marcus was neither. The best he could pass for was puzzling, or as Xavier put it interesting.

"Of course! we should all be excited, we are set on a path that will give life meaning. I've always dreamed of this stuff, magic and academies, headmasters and new friends" he was bright and smiley, until the words "I've always found this life to never be enough" left his lips. His smiled dropped off and his eyes widened, those works choked him like.... well like a noose around his neck. "I'm Marcus, nice to meet you... uh?" he reached for his new acquaintance's hand, not exactly shaking it, more a firm grip, a wiggle and a release.

I want my rifle and body armor. Which is to say I am rather uncomfortable with the obvious magic. I took this as a joke, my hobbies included logic. I was in no way prepared for the reality of magic. The irony being that magic had always been used to mean the opposite of reality. I shake my head to get my mind clear of he rambling thoughts. What matters now is information gathering. I know that magic is real, now what am I going to do with that information? Well apparently I'm going to school.

I nod to myself as I follow along with the group and listen to the apparent assistant head master.Though I seem to be completly at these peoples mercy so I sit in a desk and listen.

Adelaide watched as one of the other girls walked up to the gate and gave it a shove, but with its massive size she was sure it wouldnt just open. And to her surprise it did indeed open with what seemed like ease and behind the doors revealed a rather plain woman and when she announced who she was she really wasnt shocked for some reason. But an academy for magic? That for some reason did shock her despite the way she got here and even after she was suddenly moved to a school like room with strange writing on the walls. She looked around at the others and listened to what they had to say.

"Xavier has a point..why didnt we show signs of this earlier? Why wait until we are college level to tell us instead of being told this earlier on?"

She didnt want to just accept all this blindly, she had to know why them and why now? Had she known she had magic years ago there would have been so much she could have stopped and changed. She pursed her lips and ran her hand through her hair with a heavy sigh. At least she wasnt alone in this but she was also feeling a bit overwhelmed and not even over the fact of all the things she would probably end up learning, it was mainly from the thought of all the missed opportunities she had before she knew about all of this.

"I have a theory about that" Marcus interjected, "it's a long held belief but it may have more weight now. What if, since the world we live in constantly reminds us that magic isn't real, the doubt we hold is what keeps us from using magic. In short, we use our magic to create the world we think exists, one without magic, so we unknowingly bind ourselves." This was usually the part he'd start losing people, whether they laugh it off like a joke or just slowly distance themselves from him. "You know, like have you ever noticed when you're unsure about life, stressing out about what you should do, you get deja Vu more often?" He was reaching out in the dark, hoping someone would find him.

The Darkling The Darkling

Iris stayed uncharacteristically silent during the small conversation with the group, although she was listening to their words she was also paying close attention to their body language. She had to agree that some details of all of this seemed to not fit properly, like when she did jigsaw puzzles as a kid and tried to force a piece in the place she thought was the correct one. Maybe for now she would just pocket all does little pieces and with time figure out where they truly belonged. For now Iris decided to focus on the big picture and for that... That she had a good feeling.
She turned slightly when she heard one of the other girls going for the gate, and people said she was impatient... But whatever she was expecting what happened next wasn't it. When the new woman started talking she had Iris undivided attention. Suddenly she was moved to a new place, finding herself seated inside of a classroom. "I wish they would stop doing that..." the words escaped through gritted teeth, jaw set and arms crossed. Being tossed around like a doll witouth free will wasn't something she appreciated at any point.

The guy she had helped up before was now answering things like most of this made sense to him. Sitting behind and one seat to the left of him, Iris found his explanation poetic. "wouldn't that be nice" she thought, her eyes softening slightly. But no one was ready to simply accept any of this so easily so the questions kept coming. After hearing Marcus last theory, Iris decided to step in the conversation as well.
"So you're suggesting that we are somehow strong enough to alter reality or at least to influence it? And we have be doing this without noticing or wanting. Wouldn't it make more sense that up until now that magic was dormant and alone you could never access it?" Iris laughed a little with her own words "I mean assuming this is all true and there's any logic to be had". Although her words may sound a little harsh there was nothing but curiosity behind them.

"Not altering reality in the world around us, just our own truths. Have you ever taken a test that you studied real hard for, but when you sat to take it, you're doubts of your skills made you forget everything? It's just like that, you think it's not possible to use magic, or maybe you have never thought of using magic, so you can't."
