Introduction

The year is 2466. Humankind has cured cancer, stopped global climate change, and has recently explored to the very bottoms of our oceans. Right in this era where we were so certain that we fully understand the world we live in, a new challenger arose.

Seemingly overnight, a mysterious island appeared in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Discovered in the course of a sonar test conducted by the US Navy, satellite imaging later revealed it to be a little larger than the state of Texas. The top of the island appears to be covered with trees, but strange and unidentifiable wavelengths surrounding the island have interfered with any sonar or imaging attempts. All images of the island have come out blurry at best, and sonar has proved to be extremely inaccurate.

After being the first to discover the island, the US Government attempted to cover up its existence and claim it as an US territory. However, their attempts to investigate the island in secret quickly backfired as a result of multiple information leaks causing a worldwide mobilization to explore the new land. This fascination with the new territory only exploded when a very important discovery was made:

Dragons.

The island's only inhabitants were apparently the mythical winged creatures, and the event seemed to come right out of a fairy tale. Governments from all over the world sent teams to investigate the island and the creatures that inhabited it, but each effort ran into a multitude of problems. First of all, the island had some sort of property that made all modern satellite, sonar and imaging techniques extremely ineffective to the point where they were essentially nullified. This meant that all navigational and targeting systems were down, forcing humans to return to 19th century methods of navigation and weapons use. Secondly, the dragons proved to be highly intelligent and largely managed to dodge or rebuff the majority of attempts to investigate the island.

Meanwhile, citizens worldwide were advocating for animal rights and for the island - referred to as Dragon Island for obvious reasons - to be protected from international interference. Backed by wealthy activists and rapidly gaining worldwide support, the dragon protection movement managed to temporarily halt the ongoing military investigations into the island. However, the movement was too late to prevent several dragon specimens from being captured. In the temporary truce that ensued, all interested government parties joined together to construct an organization to ensure that no country gained an edge over another in terms of dragon exploration.

Thus, the Dragon Defense & Exploratory Coalition (DDEC) was formed.

The DDEC is chaired by a representative from the US Government and its members include China, Germany, Russia, Japan and India. The DDEC operates as an approval board for any missions sent to Dragon Island, which is formally referred to as Covensano Island named after the Navy ship that discovered it. After multiple missions were once again proved ineffective in penetrating even the outer shell of the island, the DDEC decided to conduct a joint mission into the island.

The plan was to take all currently captured dragons and send them in with human counterparts to explore the island. Governments thus began the hunt for suitable dragon riders, and the mission start was charted to be 15 years from the day to ensure proper preparation and training. Until then, activity in dragon island was brought to a halt and while multiple DDEC teams remained on-site to monitor the island, no major exploratory missions have been mounted since.

Welcome to the DDEC! You have been chosen as the very first dragon riders the world has ever seen, and have been tasked with befriending a dragon and riding it into the little-explored Covensano Island. The potential risks are massive, and your government has pressured you to outperform all of the other dragon riders and collect as much information as possible. Over the last fifteen years your government has been preparing you for this mission, and while the training was harsh they assure you that the real mission would be much harder. The dragons, unhappy at having been captured, are largely uncooperative and forming a bond with them has been strenuous.

All doubts aside, however, the mission start date is approaching and you will soon be sent to meet with the other dragons and their riders whom you will risk you lives with to explore Covensano Island.

Each character will be sent as a representative of one of the five countries in the DDEC (China, Germany, Russia, Japan and India) and the representatives from the US will be played by the GMs. The characters will have been paired with their country's captured dragon, and while each country will have had a different method of choosing the dragon rider one similarity is that the dragons certainly weren't happy about the situation, and befriending them may have taken a long time and characters may still have a hostile relationship with their dragon.

Players will be expected to play both their human character and their dragon. Characters will be outfitted with technology that enables them to communicate with their dragons through a method similar to telepathy, but whether or not the dragon elects to communicate with them is up to the player. Characters will be permitted to have technological body modifications and specialized equipment, though all of that is going to have to go through the GMs first.

There are different types of dragons and each country (for the most part) has captured a different type. More information on the countries and the dragons will be provided on the CS thread where you can choose which country you would like to make a character for. However, some general dragon information is that they are regarded as being as intelligent as humans, are usually over five feet tall, and all have some capacity to fly using their wings.
