Realistic or Modern 4 Years Later

"Lucky, I've ran into a lot of psychos the past couple years. It wasn't so bad when I was in a group, but since I've been going it alone things have been a lot worse."
"You been by yourself very long?" He asked, hoping Madis wouldn't mind him asking.

"Very long. I think two years now. Was with a friend from before since then. Good times, well, relatively." While Madis didn't seem worked-up by the question, he did seem a little more depressive while responding.
"But yknow, life goes on."

Alex noticed Madis' sounded a bit less happy when he answered, it didn't take him long to figure what happened to his friend.
"I see." He said, nodding.
"Two years is a long time to be alone.. but I guess I've been pretty reliant on others most of the past few years."

" I used to be-" Started Alex, before momentarily stopping. He was going to tell Madis about the Northstar Militia, but wasn't sure if Madis had any experiences with the group. He decided he may as well tell him. "I used to be part of a group, Northstar Militia."

Madis seemed surprised for a moment: "Huh, I guess "used to" is a good sign." After a moment of silence, he added: "Damn, but I guess it could've been worse. They just let you walk away? Sorry, I'm not too familiar on how their stuff works."

Alex was relieved that Madis didn't seem too bad about it, "Yeah.. It was good there, I'm not gonna lie. But I couldn't stay there.. I left in the middle of the night, I didn't know if they'd let me out without a fight so I figured just sneaking away would be best"

"I don't blame you for being a part of them, sometimes people have to steal to survive, that's just the world we live in." Madis sighed, and took Alex's axe and started chopping the tree, hitting it at a notable angle.

"Yeah, I guess you're right"
He was then a bit surpriesed when when Madis took his axe but then watch him chop down the tree, looking at the way he did it for when he'd have to do it himself.
"Should I use your hatchet then to chop down a smaller tree? Or do we have enough for now"

Madis chopped the tree half-way, taking a good few minutes doing it, then handed the axe back.
"You take the rest of this down, then we'll have enough. Should be a few-ten good hits for it to fall now."

"Gotcha"
Alex was handed back the axe, and he looked at it before approaching the tree. He had been watching the way Madis was chopping at it, and copied him. He struck the tree again and again, his strikes sometimes a bit off target but very strong. After some minutes the tree was near to falling.
"That wasn't so bad, I guess just one or two more hits to go"
Alex hit the axe a couple times more, and then it began to fall and Alex got out of the way, satisfied.

"But how was it? The Northstar? They cool as people? Or are they meaner than they seem?"

"It varied. Most people were decent, good people. Some of them.. some of them were downright sadistic. Of course, killing and hurting others wasnt the groups priority, but it was for some people. That was only a selectfew though."

"Well, kinda. Met a few pairs, they've mostly left me alone. Guess I don't have much for them to want. They did rob a caravan I was tagging along with once, but the caravan heads payed them off." Madis took a break and swiped the sweat off his forehead, then took off his hoodie "But those sadistic people, groups keep them around?"

"What'd we do with them? Well I mean not many of us liked them, but as long as they were helping the group and not going too overboard not much was done about them. A few people were kicked out here and there though" He answered, frowning as he thought back on his time in the group

((Just a heads up, friday to sunday I'll be away. I might possibly be on for a short time but I might not. Depends if I have WiFi. Ill be in england))

"Well, there aren't that many people out there at all, and people in any sort of larger faction at all are a minority, so I wouldn't really call it lucky."
Madis picked all of the pieces of firewood up and carried them inside.

"You need any help with that?" Offered Alex, holding his arms out to carry any firewood leftover.
"I feel pretty lucky to be away from Northstar. None of the big factions really seem worth joining to be honest, although I had considered finding Northstar again for a short while after I left, I think I'm best just going it alone, or with a small group.

So you never been part of any of the major factions at all? You travel around a lot, or have you been settling mearby?"
