The guards rushed from the brush to form a shield of men before Brenner. Ever since their last meeting, all of Bren's underbelly scales and half of the scales on his neck, back and tail were white. His eyes were a milky gray like those of a blind person. He coughed out a thick plume of smoke, a ball of flame striking the ground before Lyra, killing a handful of her warriors. The kingly guardsmen raised their weapons and let out a war cry before setting forwards.

Lyra cried out and hit the ground hard, the burst of flames having sent her flying backwards. She got to her knees quickly, her hands desperately pushing her hair out of her face as she looked around in horror. There were limp bodies aflame all around her, some lucky enough to be dead, some not. She looked up at Brenner, tears rolling down her flushed cheeks. At this rate, her army would be completely wiped out within minutes, and there was nothing she could do to stop it. Her magic was strong, but she still didn't know how to use it at will. "Brenner please! End this madness! I know you're still in there somewhere!" Lyra shouted to him as she stumbled to her feet and slowly made her way towards him, the guards being too busy with her people to try and stop her from getting close to him.

Brenner lowered his head and stalked toward Lyra, growling with his mouth slightly open to show that the back of his throat was washed with golden light. He was preparing to breathe fire again, but he was biding his time. Beneath his feet people were crushed, warriors were knocked breathless by his tail, and some were impaled by his claws with every step.

Lyra held out both of her arms as if to block him from going any further even though he was at least five times her size, probably much more. “Please!” She screamed, her heart chipping away but by bit as each person fell to the ground dead. “Brenner it’s me! It’s me! Please just see me!” She shouted trying to break him free from the trance he was under. She glanced at the amulet that swung from her wrist and she held her breath. ~I’m sorry Brenner. But this.. is the only way...~ she thought before she ripped off the amulet and threw it at him as hard as she could, it landing below his feet just as he was about to step, it being crushed by his weight and digging into his skin.

Bren froze as the amulet shattered underfoot. Everything seemed to go into slow motion as he collapsed like a giant rag doll. His tail and wings knocked away all warriors on the battlefield in a painful but nonfatal motion. Brenner's whole body began to tremble vigorously in a seizure that made his limbs crush one or two people. He began to shrink quickly, bones shifting and scales fading into skin. A pale, naked Brenner appeared in the center of the leveled, charred battlefield. He shakily got on all fours, refusing to be vulnerable. He turned his furious, loathing gaze on Lyra. Bren at the moment would kill her in an instant with no regrets. Somehow he knew that that was the last time he would ever be a dragon. It was like there was an empty hole in his chest where that piece of him had been. After hundreds of years, the dragon was such a big part of him. That it was gone... was unthinkable. Bren's eyes welled up with tears that streaked over his cheeks even as he stood slowly. He felt weaker. He hadn't felt so vulnerable since before he was cursed. Bren was truly a human. He ran his hands through his hair and pulled hard at the white-and-black strands. Blood started beading in his scalp. "YOU'VE ROBBED ME OF WHO I AM!!" He appeared manic in this moment.

Lyra stared at him, her heart dropping. She didn't have the time to notice that he was naked, her eyes remaining on his face. "Brenner I-I'm sorry. I was just trying to help you!" She tried, taking a few steps towards him, her body trembling at the thought of what he might do to her. "Please Brenner," She cried, practically sobbing at this point. "Please just calm down and look at me!" She said, knowing that he was so blinded by anger that he didn't know what he was doing. She stood only a foot away from him now, her hand hovering above his chest as she wanted to touch him, to comfort him, but she didn't know how she could at this point. She just stood there crying, her shaking fingertips barely brushing against his heated skin.

"DON'T TOUCH ME! DON'T COME NEAR ME--! DON'T, DON'T--!" Bren let go of his hair and shoved Lyra away. He may not have had super strength anymore, but he was still in really good shape. He was still strong compared to most humans.

Lyra staggered backwards, and even fell onto the ground from how weak she was, the shattering of the amulet having taken all of her strength. She grunted as she pushed herself up and she looked at him for a moment, contemplating on whether or not she should just walk away. "I'm not leaving you. Not again!" She shouted back before she ran at him. She practically slammed her body into his, her arms going around him as she held him in a tight embrace, her eyes squeezed shut. She refused to let go of him, her whole body tense as she held onto him with the last bit of energy she had left. "Brenner it's me! It's me Lyra. Please just know me!" She cried, her tears falling and hitting his skin.

Brenner detached Lyra from himself. If she didn't walk away soon, he just might end up trying to kill her. His fury was beyond anything he had ever felt--it was like it was burning him from the inside, hotter than even the fire that constantly churned within him as a dragon.

Lyra saw that her time was quickly running out and she stared at Brenner with wide eyes. She had never seen him look so furious in all the time they had spent together. She could see that if she didn't do something in the next millisecond, he would he lost to her forever. "Damn it Brenner!" she said breathlessly, exasperated before took a sudden step forward, her hand on the back of his neck to pull him downwards as she pressed her lips roughly to his. ~I pray before the old gods and the new when I was this... Please.. Let this work!~ She thought silently, her body frozen as she awaited her fate.

Brenner's fury was dampened like the kiss was a wet blanket dropped on a fire. Something in his mind snapped on, like a light switch. His eyes widened and he grabbed Lyra by the shoulders, forcing her to arms-length. "What the hell, Lyra?!" He stepped back and rubbed his mouth, brows drawn as if he were annoyed, but his cheeks were flushed.

Lyra let her head drop, her shoulders shaking as if she were laughing or crying. And it was probably both at this point. She looked up at him, a wide smile on her face as she wiped the tears off of her cheeks. "You're back. You're actually back." She whispered before stepping back into his little bubble and hugging him tightly once more, her arms around his neck and her body leaning against him, her face buried in the crook of his neck. "I've never been so happy to see you." She said, her voice still shaky as she couldn't stop the tears from welling up in her eyes. They had never been so close to one another. Not even when Brenner was teasing her. And the fact that Lyra was initiating this sudden closeness was shocking.

Brenner seemed not to know what to do. He awkwardly pat her arm and stepped away, the expression on his face showing confusion and awkwardness. "Seriously... Why are you so touchy all of a sudden?"

Lyra continued to laugh for a moment before a sigh escaped her lips and she pushed her hair to the side. "I guess you've just grown on me, that's all." She said, smiling up at him. She still had the urge to hold him close, but she fought against it, pushing it to the back of her mind. "And you are... Sort of.. in the nude.." She added, a small blush coming across her cheeks as she covered her mouth, a now cheesy grin spreading across her face. "So you could say that's helping with my sudden attraction for you."

Even after all this time, Brenner still didn't care that he was naked. It wasn't abnormal to him. He couldn't help a smile and something compelled him to step closer. He threaded his fingers in Lyra's hair, an inquiring look in his eyes. "You've always been attracted to me, admit it." He kissed her gently and was surprised himself that he did it, but it didn't show.

Lyra held onto the wrist of the hand that was in her hair, her other arm going round his neck once more to pull him closer, her eyes closing blissfully. "Alright. You're a tiny bit attractive." She whispered as they parted for air before she pulled him into another kiss, a fire having been lit in her heart that only he could extinguish. Even though she had gone through so much pain and struggle just to get to this point, she'd do it all over again if it meant she could live in this moment with him forever. "Maybe a little bit more than a tiny bit." She added after a moment, her forehead resting against his. "But what about you? Have you always been attracted to me?" She teased, having gained a bit more confidence since he had kissed her back.

Bren smiled and laughed softly. "You're okay," he replied, gazing with amusement into her eyes. This was the last of the hardship the two of them would have to bear. Somehow Bren knew this in his heart. They would live a much less eventful life, and sure they would taunt each other and act hard to get, but that was part of the fun. They were meant to be despite their struggles, and now there was nothing holding them back.

"You're okay, but I'll keep you anyway." Bren kissed Lyra again, deeper this time. And in the future Lyra would find that Bren never would go against those words. He had learned to love her, and never would he regret it.

~The End~

Holly seemed offended by the fact that Valen didn’t have the same lover for hamburgers that she did. She punched him in the arm before pouting in the passenger seat. “Everyone likes hamburgers..” she muttered, sulking like a five year older before she suddenly straightened up, a loud gasp sounding from her. She slapped Valen on the arm multiple times to signal that she was remembering something of the utmost importance. “How the heck did I forget?!” She demanded herself before turning towards Valen with a great big grin on her face. “There’s a party tomorrow night up in the mountains! It’s supposed to be a huge deal. I got an invitation for it from my friends s couple days ago and I COMPLETELY forgot. This could be your change to meet some more people! Ya know, put yourself out there. You have to come with me. You have to have to.” She said, shaking him vigorously in hopes that it would make him compliant.

Myra somehow managed to balance on the counter as she reached over and unlocked the door, quickly swinging it open shortly after. “Incoming!” She shouted before she launched herself off the counter, her body slamming into Jacob’s. She wrapped her legs around his waist, refusing to touch the ground as she held onto his shoulders tightly, her body trembling. She had no idea what she had heard beneath the bathroom floor. But it sounded like some sort of bug. A demon bug from hell itself. And she was petrified of bugs.

Valen made a sound like a whining puppy. "I don't know if I'm up to socialization..." When Holly didn't stop shaking him he tried to swat at her hands. "You're gonna make me wreck!"

"Whoa!" Jacob exclaimed, stumbling back into the wall across from the bathroom door. "I know I'm not the worst guy, but to have you throwing yourself at me..." He smiled. "What's the problem, Myr?"

“Well then just stick with me and be my plus one! I really don’t want to go alone. Please come with me? Please please please?” She begged, her hands just gripping his arm now instead of shaking it since she didn’t want to die the night before a party.

Myra flushed and glared at him, their faces only a inch or two apart. She turned to glance back at the bathroom, her legs still wrapped around him. “There was something under the floor. It sounded like a bug. A big bug. A big demon bug.” She said, her hands gripping his shirt.

Valen groaned. "Why do you appeal to my loyalty...?" he muttered too soft for her to hear. "Fine," he grumbled. "I'm assuming you want to go buy a dress or something?"

Jacob sighed, moving to set Myra down. "It was probably mice in the basement. Rodents can get frostbite too, so a warm, sheltered place is bound to attract a mouse or two."

Holly’s grin suddenly got even wider and innocent if even possible. “I forgot to mention that it’s a costume party...” She said slowly, not wanting him to back out now that he knew that. “But you still have to go! You already said yes. So there’s no going back.” She added before pointing up the road. “There’s a costume store just up there.”

Myra reluctantly let go of him, her legs falling away from his waist and her feet dropping onto the floor. She took a step away from him, a light blush still on her face as she smoothed out her shirt. “Mice don’t sound that demonic..” she muttered, her fingers running through her hair before she tucked it behind her ear. “But thank you for the rescue.” She said after a moment, her back leaning against the wall across from him. “Sorry if I surprised you.. And if I was heavy.”

"I said I would go but I didn't say I would dress up!" Valen said indignantly. He paused and almost seemed to pout. "Are you seriously going to make me get a costume?" He was already pulling into the store parking lot.

Jacob laughed. "You're a small girl so don't worry about it." He was taking a step closer to her when Victoria's voice echoed from the kitchen to the hall they were standing in.

"Hey you guuuuys! Come get some hot cocoa and then go to sleep!" Jacob smiled, revealing faint dimples. He held his elbow out to Myra like an old fashioned gentleman.

"Walk with me?"

“You betcha.” She said in a Canadian accent before unbuckling. “This is gonna be so much fun! I’ve never been to a costume party before.” She said happily, her eyes bright with excitement.

Myra glanced down at his elbow, her eyes quickly returning to his face. She sighed, a small smile finding its way onto her face. “If I must.” She said reluctantly. She took a hold of his arm, her shoulder leaning against his. “I probably should have told her earlier... but I really don’t enjoy hot cocoa.” She whispered to him, not wanting Tori to hear her.

"Well what are you gonna dress as? And what will you dress me as? If I have to choose something my costume will just be Valen."

Jacob gasped dramatically. "Dost thou bite your thumb at me, sir? How can you not like hot chocolate?!" he said in a stage whisper. Then he grinned and straightened. "How about I make us some coffee after Tori falls asleep? That sound good to you?"
