Other Frozen Remembrance (Short Story)

The event was 6 years ago.

I sat near the cold wooden wall, looking outside at the falling snow, remembering the time 6 years before.
The window was frozen cold, but I kept my hand on it, contacting the reflection on the other side.
Before I closed my eyes to ponder over what had taken place in the 6 years of my life after the event, Miss Bella entered my room.
"Damian? What are you doing alone, near the cold window? Why don't you come downstairs and sit by the fire?"
I looked at the beautiful maiden who tended to the rooms of the house.
"I'm fine" I replied in a dim voice.

I lived in the house of a kind man, a man who had given up his small mansion to change it into an orphanage for children like me.
The orphanage was a secret however, they took in children in need, those who were homeless or abandoned.
I looked at my lap. I was wearing a pair of fine jeans, and a white sweater, and I set on a wooden stool in my barren, empty bed room.
It was a large enough room to be considered a master bed room, in fact, it was before.
I had only a bed, a dresser, and a stool in the room, and a lot of empty space to use for what I'd like, but due to my nature, I left it empty and dull.

Miss Bella stepped inside and looked around, before nearing me and patting my head.
"Don't worry, I know what you're thinking about. I've been through it before."
It was true, Miss Bella has been through the same situation I had 6 years before.

When I was the age of 10, my parents were killed in a house robbery. I had witnessed it, and immediately grabbed the emergency knife and cut the criminal before he had left. As soon as authorities arrived, I gave them the blood sample to test.
I had concluded that the criminal was a 29 year old man with an unstable mentality, based on his posture and way of wording things.
Judging by that, it was assumed that he may have been homeless.
Sooner or later, the police found him, and he was in fact, 29, and mentally unstable.
Astounded, a police officer came to me to speak personally, and recommended I be taken to the very orphanage I had resided within.
They happened to work there when not on police work, so they knew how to access it.

Remembering the event brought a tear to my eye.
Miss Bella wiped the tear away and crouched down to confront me face-to-face.
"Damian. I know it may be heard to think about the event, but remember. It was 6 years ago. It happened already, and you need to get over it."
I turned away on my stool.

Miss Bella got up and left the room, only to return with a book, moments later.
She set it on my lap and patted the book.
"Read this. You need a hobby to keep your mind off of these things." She told me as she left.

"Human Psychology".
Extraordinarily boring.

I took the book and lightly set it on the ground, and slouched near the window again, looking outside.
I saw below, two of the orphaned children playing in the snow. I could tell it was Tina, a 12 year old girl who was abandoned by her abusive father, and Jay, a 11 year old boy, whose parent's died in a car accident.

They had fun throwing balls of snow at each other, building structures made of snow, and generally playing.
They had no worries nor guilt of their parents' deaths.
I observed as they played a game of "snowball tag" and made snow angels.

Interesting.
A field of frozen water, too cold for normal life to withstand. They don't fear it, they don't worry of frost bite, being frozen or anything. Their childlike minds simply know one thing: Play.
I stroked my chin as I thought about what the children were thinking.
I was studying human psychology.

I looked back at the book laid on the floor and thought to myself.
I could do something good with my life.

Instead of being the weird, anti-social kid of the orphanage, I could be the one to study and become more knowledgeable.
I took the book and opened it, ready to start my journey of study, knowledge, and a care free life.
