Ulfric Ellrulfsson
Earl of Gothland
This thread pertains to a semi-Realistic Drama RP style-type with some elements of mythology and futuristic lore. Metaphors and symbolisms may be frequent (ex. Medieval characters referring to Colonial charcter's muskets as 'fire-spears'). No modern techs or space-techs allowed. Mostly takes place during the Viking Age, c. 500-1000 A.D. (Rated-R for Restricted). This story contains vulgarity, blood and gore, pornography, drama and violence. Not recommended for children. Viewer discretion is advised.
This is a continuation of a RPG on another site containing characters played by actual players (not NPCs), and the following narrative is based on actual events played in-character. OOC conversations between parties may be regarded as IC 'diplomatic negotiations' between emissaries. Be aware of these things when you read this.
My name is Úlfric Ellrúlfssön. I am the Jarl (Earl) of Göthland, and my father Konung (King) Ellrúlf of Svealand has tasked me with an important quest to save our allied neighbor's kingdom from our enemy neighbor's Viking raids. Being vikingr ourselves, we set sail in our dragon-headed double prowed longship, the Örmbátur, and took to the high seas. My father volunteered to lead the voyage, but since he is aging, I insisted as his oldest son that I lead the expedition instead. The king granted my request, and I assembled my first leidgang. My crew had 50 men including myself, ranging from ages 15 to 50, all of whom were my kinsmen. A majority of them were úlfhédinns. I myself have been called the Prince of the Úlfheðnar. If you've heard of us then you know we have old traditions. We worship many pagan gods like Odin, Thor, and Ellrúlf's father Freyr, who is also my grandfather. We Norsemen are known to be medieval, primitive, brutal and savage. Does this sound like you?
*Uses the wine pitcher to fill your mug with a cold drink*
We sailed west from the Baltic Sea into the North Atlantic, where my ship was blown off-course by Thor's laughter. He was laughing because he was celebrating our safe journey. After a few weeks, a mysterious fog led me to a land full of wizards and dragons. I had planned to explore this new land, but the night we arrived, my crew made contact with some uninvited guests. A warship carrying 500 armed persons in Roman uniform came and stormed my encampment. They insulted our Viking traditions and dropped our peace offering in the sand. As such, 42 of my best men died on the beach that night. Only I alone, and six of my closest kinsmen escaped. My own two brothers, Hürgor and Edgtho, did not survive. If it had not been for the help of Odin's ravens, I too would be dead beside my brothers.
*Takes a swig from his ivory-horn mead flask*
But the gods have shown favor to me thus far, hence why I am here to rebuild my ship and reform my crew. I will need expert warriors who will live up to the courage and strength of my fallen kinsmen, and will not disappoint them in Valhalla, but who will make the gods proud with their tact and wits. I will not need many, as there will only be one ship. But you must be willing to trust your kinsman beside you when the time comes. You must show both leadership and teamwork, as it takes several warriors to form a shield wall. You must be eager and willing to face outnumbering odds and superior weaponry, for some of our enemies have long spears with barrels that fire dragon's breath at a distance greater than our longbows. Their armor is tough to penetrate, and they are aided by dark magic and foreign gods. Does this sound like something you'd be interested in?
I will need shieldmakers, swordmakers and shipbuilders. The shieldmaker must also be a shieldbearer. The swordmaker must also be an expert at swordsmanship. The shipbuilder must also know how to sail and navigate my ship. Everyone must serve more than one purpose. If you are up to the task, then post a character sheet below and I will examine your qualities. If I am impressed, I will send you a message on how to contact me in real-time for further details.
*Summons his servants to bring more wine and plenty of food for his guests*
There are no requirements that you are aware of. Anyone can submit a profile, regardless of age, gender or literary skill. However, I will be studying each character sheet carefully to see if I think you will be an asset to my leidang. If you do not wish to join my leidang, but would still like to be our ally, then you may submit a character sheet and I swear to you, it will not go unnoticed. I will also need a linguist, one or two archers, a seer, and someone to take care of our horses (or dogs). But we will not need slaves.
In fact, any runaway slave or servant who is sold to me and joins my ship's crew will be granted their freedom as karls. Everyone will be expected to oar the ship and help with cargo, as freemen and equals in rank and status. As freemen (and freewomen), you will be allowed to keep whatever booty and treasures you receive. As your Earl, I will not tax you, my brothers and sisters. On the contrary, I will see to it that you are rewarded greatly for your service, and any land we conquer or settle will be divided up evenly amongst you. What say you? Let's see if you have what it takes to be a viking.
You may submit a character at any time. Multiple character sheets are allowed, but please don't submit too many characters (1 is fine, 3 is great, 5 is okay but 6 is too many). Viking women are also invited to join my gang. However, let everyone know this, that all women aboard my ship will be treated as equals. This extends not only to times of battle when they may be called upon to fight, but also in times of peace when they will be given an equal share of the profits as landowners. Anyone who does not honor my law in this matter will be cast overboard with their necks cut open. I hope we have an understanding.
*Smiles and raises his horn in toast and cheers*
Now, we celebrate, and wait to see who will join. Yes? :-D
