Advice/Help Sci-fi firearms help

Project Naiad

Octopus in disguise
Hello! (It's me...)
I was hoping someone could help me come up with a cool weapon for my sci-fi character. Here's a little about him:
His name is Nate Glass, code named Naiad. He's part of a small unit of specialized soldiers (think Overwatch or Mass Effect).
His powers include telekinesis, hydrokinesis and psychic field generation.
He fills the role of a support unit, and hasn't had extensive firearm training, so I was thinking of something small and light, good for providing cover fire when he's not using his powers rather than his main source of offense. I would like something unique for him.
Final note, gun name is going to be 'Trident' (to fit the Naiad theme).
So yeah, throw your suggestions at me! (But not too hard, I bruise easily)

The name "Trident" instantly brings to mind some sort of rifle with 3 barrels, so there's an idea, it's not exactly small like a pistol but it would make sense for a less experienced character because more shots means less misses, simple math~!

You're right, or at least a gun with three firing modes.
Do you think a pistol with three barrels could work? Maybe shaped in a triangle?

The 3-barreled idea is dumb. It adds unneeded weight and complexity to the gun, which is the last thing an inexperienced shooter is going to want. I'd go for a light carbine (generally means a cut-down rifle) with added recoil compensation systems, maybe a simple pneumatic or hydraulic tube that would use the kinetic energy from the recoil to push a weight, reducing what you felt. Or some sci-fi gizmo. Of course, you could make it a chunkier firearm, but a big gun generally implies somebody who's tough and knows what he's doing, visually.

Of course, you want it to have some type of 'triplicate' to go with the trident idea, so why not make it an exclusively burst-fire weapon? I recall a gun that I want to call russian that has a burst-fire mode that has a unique system that makes it so that the shooter doesn't feel the recoil until all three rounds have left the barrel of the gun.

If it's a magnetic weapon or something similar like in mass effect, and you're using the logic that the gun shaves out metal spikes, why not make it so that it just fires 3 spikes at once in a modifiable spread?

So instead of getting the Trident thing from the gun appearance you get it from the number of bullets in a single round? That's pretty cool yeah, however Trident is only a name for the gun, it doesn't have to be related to the number three.
As for the spikes and explosives I don't think it really fits the character, they make me think of torn flesh and that's something more fitting for an assault unit.
Maybe something that connects to his water/psychic theme? Or something that increases his supporting abilities, like a gravity gun (although he already has kinesis for that) or similar.
Of course I could just go for a normal low range, fast rate of fire SMG, but that's pretty boring :P

I was thinking of something looking like this, but smaller (this is actually a shotgun). Something modern looking and not particularly damaging, opposed to a bulky rifle.

If you're still having ideas, why not a Carbine or SMG with a drum mag that has a high firerate? It's bullets could split into 3 bullets once it reaches a certain distance, and why not give it Shock rounds?
totally not taken from borderlands.

Sounds pretty cool! No shock ammo though, maybe some sort of soaking ammo, since he can manipulate water but not create it?

I was thinking Shock because you could drench an enemy for Critical Damage, but Soaked ammo seems to be just as useful... Why not two ammo types?

I can totally see the usefulness of shock ammo, but the thing is, I'm kinda ocd when it comes to my character's themes ^^', it's weird I know.
However multiple ammo types isn't a bad idea, maybe soaking ammo, cryo ammo and psychic empowered ammo.

DID SOMEONE CALL FOR MY
EXPERTISEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE?

I'm going to need a couple of questions answered before I can proceed to perhaps make a custom firearm.

1. What era are we talking about here? 40 or 4,000 years into the future from now?
2. What are the prime weapons that find use on the battlefield? Do ballistic weapons still exist and if so, are they primarily used compared to non-ballistic weapons or not?
3. Does this world use the weapons of today? Do the M16 and AKM still see use or are reincarnated into different weapons that vaguely resemble their predecessors?
4. What type of weapon will your character need? Will it need to be able to switch from long range marksmanship to close quarters chaos for example?

The closest thing I can get to personalization would perhaps be olive or tan finishes, but perhaps I can add camouflage using the magic of MS paint.
Here's what I typically make if you're interested in "hiring" me:

Woah! OK let's see.
1) The year would be about 2200.
2) I have never really thought about this but I'd say yeah they exist and are still popular.
3) Probably not. Weapon manufacturers have come up with new designs and technologies.
4) It would be a small and light weapon, probably an SMG, fitting for a support unit, probably with a special type of ammo. something he can use to provide cover fire when his powers are on 'cooldown', not as a primary damage source.

However as cool as your designs look they are not what I'm looking for for this particular character, I'd like something more smooth and modern looking along the lines of the picture I posted, with a blue, white, silver palette.

Alright, I think I have enough to work with here. I'll try my best to see if I can meet what you're looking for.
I don't see a picture.
(On a side note they're probably as modern as modern can get. The SA80 I used as a base for the second image is about 20-30 years old, combined with the parts from the AUG A3 which was introduced in 2006. Polymers and tactical rails are also pretty modern as well.)

I don't know, I really wouldn't know how to pay you for your work :/
