Araqiel had sat down in the dark against the base of tree alongside a long black rock -man made, he figured, for their transportation contraptions- with the intention of assessing the damage done to his wings. All of him looked frankly horrible; battered, bruised, bleeding and caked in mud and dirt. But it was his wings that bothered him the most, a painful wrongness that screamed for his attention. To right what was wrong with them. That was wishful thinking. The bindings holding his wrists together had caused his fingers to go slightly numb and limited his reach along his wings. His biggest set were either broken or dislocated in several places and there was nothing he could for that even if he had full use of his arms.

At first Araqiel busied himself with trying to chew through the hard plastic binding that was starting to cut into his wrists, only causing the plastic to cut deeper and blood to run slowly, tickling his arms, to his elbows and dripping to his knees where it stained the over long t-shirt better suited for a three hundred pound man than a seventy five pound boy. When he gave up on that he turned to his smallest wings, digging his humbled fingers deep into his feathers and pulling. He sat and plucked his own wings for hours on the side of the deserted road, stressed to the extreme, eventually his little wigs were a mass of blood and matted feathers and his medium sized wings were next.

As Araqiel sat and tortured his wings he stressed and wondered over when a human would come down this path he found. Would ?they take him back to The Facility, the horrible research building that still housed his family? Or, Would they be nice and help him? Would they be scared of his wings? He supposed seeing three sets of wings on a child is not a normal occurrence for humans as a whole... He just couldn't help but fret.

Stephanie had just had a gig at some performance hall in a town that was definitely the definition of the middle of nowhere. Apparently there was some kind of government facility near it and they were the only town to have stayed near. She wasn't sure if they were just a bunch of crazy people in the middle of the woods somewhere, but she was definitely glad to be leaving. Singing along obnoxiously to a Foreigner song, Juke Box Hero, she turned onto one of the only roads that led out of the town to the west and started down it. The road was almost eerily deserted, and tall trees blocked out any light from nearby cities or towns entirely. Steph was a big wigged out by the road, but for now she was distracting herself with her music. Turning up her bright headlights as the path before her seemed to darken even further in the night as clouds swept over the moon, she kept an eye out for any deer than might come bounding into the road.

Letting out a casual sigh as the song ended, she let her eyes wander to the edges of the road and at the blurring trees around her, when she saw what seemed like a person besides the road ahead. When she looked closer, she realized that it was a child, but by the time she realized this she had already traveled a few feet past him. Stopping abruptly, causing her seatbelt to lock in place as she was jerked forward, she looked through her rear view mirror to double check that she hadn't been imagining things. There was in fact what looked to be a child on the side of the road. A child that looked extremely out of place and like he had been beaten up or something. Shifting into reverse, she slowly backed up until she was right beside the child. It was dark, and all she could see was that he was rather small and pale and covered in dirt and blood, if there was anything weird about him or behind him, it was concealed by the gloom of the trees.

The purring rumble of her car's engine became more apparent as she rolled down the passenger side window and looked down at the kid.

"Hey kid," she called out to him, a worried expression on her face," are you lost?"

Araqiel heard it before he saw anything and his vessel suddenly broke out in a cold sweat. The contraption he had been taken to the facility in with a few of his siblings came to mind. Remembering their terrified faces, the tension in the air, and their worried cries demanding to know what was going on almost made him regret attempting to turn to a human for help... Surely they weren't all that bad though? His parents had little trouble out in public with the humans, but of course those occasions had always been planed out thoroughly before being executed.

He could almost smell his own fear when the pair of blinding lights crested over a swell in the road and the human contraption came closer at an unsettling speed. This thing was also much louder than the contraption he had been in before and he couldn't tell if that was a good or a bad sign. Araqiel had to look away as the thing passed him by, blinded temporarily by the lights.

At first he thought the human inside hadn't seen him. He worried for a moment how long it will be before the next one comes along. The screeching of the thing coming to a halt stopped those thoughts in their tracks and now he was shaking. The human had seen him. And stopped. And was backing up to get a better look. Araqiel could have wet his poor excuse for a pair of pants he was so afraid. In fact, he might have. He wasn't really sure at that point.

And then the human poked its head out the side of the dark loud metal thing. He saw long hair and a soft face. When it spoke its voice was gentle and high pitched. Female. Good. He knew he had a higher chance at help with a female human because of their nurturing instincts. But her words seemed odd. She sees a wounded boy on the side of the road and her first question is if he's lost? Humans...

Araqiel wanted to respond, wanted to request her help but he couldn't work past the lump of fear in his throat. So instead he spoke directly to her mind.

Please. You have to help me, please.

The kid spoke, though she could have sworn she didn't see his lips move, but she must have been imagining it.

"Okay, okay," she said, shifting the car into park and stepping out of it, the door creaking shut then closing with a slam," uh... do you need help getting into the car?"

She was pretty awkward about everything, not really... ever having dealt with kids. And she'd never planned to.

"I can take you back to your house... but probably the hospital first," she offered, her uncertainty sounding in her voice.

Araqiel sensed the young female's unease and knew he had to be careful about how he revealed his wing for it seems she hasn't seen them yet. He attempted to stand slowly and flinched when his wings flexed reflexively to help him keep his balance without the use of his hands. He let himself fall back against the tree, panting. He looked up at the girl, looked in the eye and held out his zip tied wrists.

Help, he spoke to her again, in the same way as before. I need to go home. A hospital would not understand.

Araqiel could feel his vessel's heart racing at his nervousness. He was treading on egg cells and he knew it. Past experience tells him humans are not so receptive to his kind.

She stared at the kid for a second, knowing for sure he had spoken, somehow, without... speaking. This time, for sure.

"You... I..." she stuttered for a moment, still trying to comprehend what had just happened," I must be loosing my mind."

Running one of her hands through her hair and frowning down at the kid in disbelief, she let herself inspect every cut, every mud splotch on him. Maybe he was a monster or an alien of some kind but... he didn't seem like he was going to do much damage even if he tried to hurt her right then.

"Can you get in the car on your own?" she asked, surprising herself with how calm she sounded," then you'll have to direct me to... wherever it is that you live."

image.jpg
I'll need you to open the ...car...if you don't wish to unbind me.
He told her wading barefoot a step through the pile of bloody feathers he pulled from his wings, careful to keep his distance. Just in case, he also tucked his tattered and broken wings in as close to his vessel as possible. He won't be able to fly away but he can try to protect himself if necessary.

I would... Give directions. But.... I don't know where I am.

"Right... Right... Bindings... Sorry," her demeanor immediately switched back to one of uncertainty. Pulling a switchblade knife from her pocket she approached him carefully," is it okay if I just... cut that zip tie off? It'll only take a second."

She didn't want to hurt him, and she sure as hell didn't want him to hurt her. However this weird encounter went down, she preferred it end with neither of them injured in any new way.

image.jpg
Araqiel nodded and held his bound wrists higher, unsure if it would be wise to approach the female when she's gone back to being so cautious. Carefully he another step forward bloody feathers clinging to his dirty skin and thought to her again, I don't want to hurt you. You don't need to be afraid. And then out loud he says in a small, hoarse, overused (as if he'd been screaming) voice he whispers "please? It hurts."

"I uh... o-okay," was all she could force herself to say, kneeling down to his height and gingerly cutting off the zip tie, making sure as best she could that the blade didn't touch his skin. Now, she could see the feathers on the ground, though, they couldn't have come from him, right?

Tossing the zip tie to the ground, she looked at him curiously, yet warliy.

"What happened to you kid?" She asked, standing now and reaching into her car to grab a bottle of water. Steph didn't know if he needed to drink water, but by the sound of his voice, he needed it.

Handing it to him she pulled open the passenger side door and waited for him to enter the car. She knew that this could be extremely dangerous, but, she didn't want to just leave him here.

Araqiel flinched when the ziptie came off, exiting the wounds on his wrists. He marveled at how gentle the female was being. Maybe this could work after all. He still startled when she spoke to him. And he replied in his usual way, I am not a child, don't let my appearance fool you.

Araqiel stared at the offered bottle of water for a moment before hesitately taking it into his shaking hands, stepping closer so he could do so. He turned the bottle over in his hands wondering at the gift. He could see that it contained water but he wasn't sure how or even if he was supposed to get to it. He took in the sight of the car next. It didn't look comfortable, and his already screaming and aching wings agreed. He knew right away he was going to make a mess and he wasn't sure how much the female would appreciate that. He stepped closer still anyway, keeping his wings tight to his back and his back away from the human he poked his head inside. He didn't understand the design at all or where and how exactly he was supposed be on the inside of it. The last car he had been in he kneeled directly on the floor but the seats, he assumed they were seats-they smelled of dead cows and chemicals- were in the way. With his wings so damaged it looked like it might be a painful ride. Seeing the back seat was mostly empty he climbed in there and laid face down across the bench seating (I'm assuming it's Baby from spn?) giving the female a good view of his broken wings.

He sighed and clutched the water bottle to his chest and closed his eyes, waiting for the other shoe to drop, and finally answering her question. My family's homestay was raided by male humans with guns and plastic shields. Even though his face showed no emotion his voice sounded very clearly puzzled at the plastic bit. How could plastic protect them from the things his family could do? But he continued on we were taken away to be studied. I think I'm the only one that made it out...

"Right, not a kid," she said mostly to herself, pulling open the handle to enter the driver's side of the car and looking back at him, nearly loosing her cool composure that she had managed to fake for a little while now when she saw his wings," that's... that's awful."

As she started up the car and continued down the path she had begun to take when she had met him, her eyes kept flicking to her rear view mirror every few seconds to check that he was alright. It seemed he hadn't opened the water bottle yet, and she was a bit confused. Maybe he didn't know how? This was all a bit weird for Steph. The car had gone extremely silent in the time she had been driving and it made her uncomfortable.

"So E.T, what's it that they call you?" she asked casually, a pop culture reference making its way into her question as it did most of what she said.

The road they were on led to an onramp, that led to a highway, that- if Steph's map was correct- would lead to Utah, then Nevada, then California. There were more cars here, but the only light came from other headlights and the lamp posts that stood high above the road that came in small waves and bursts of white or yellow light.

(Yes it would be the same car as Baby Cx)

image.jpg
Araqiel groaned when the car started moving, the movement pressing a wing into the seat back. But after that he didn't make another sound until spoken to and that was only a sigh before he spoke into the female's mind again I don't understand that reference.... The name I was given is Araqiel.

He chanced a look up through the window long enough for him to see the direction they were headed in. He continued speaking in her head, And if your intention is still to take me to my homestay, you're heading in the wrong direction. You need to head north. Not west. Toward the mountains of Montana.

Steph looked back at Araquiel again in the mirror curiously. Everyone at least knew what ET was; a cheesy 80s movie. He must definitely not be from anywhere around humans normally.

"Well, it's nice to meet you Ara.. Araquiel?" she responded, faltering at his name for a moment before continuing," got it, though, we might have to make a stop before taking on that road trip."

The sun had just begun to come up and the sky was stained hues of pink and purple and blue and gold. Stephanie loved sunrises, though, she never seemed to be awake to see them. Stopping the car off at a small gas station, as they were still a ways out of any large city, Steph looked back at Araquiel hesitantly. "I'm... uh... not sure if you'd like to stay in the car or get out, but while the car fills up I could go in and grab some bandages for those... those wings of yours."

It felt weird to be talking about the wings of a child who wasn't actually a child who was not human. Steph had seen a lot of crazy things in her rather short time on Earth, but this was definitely new.

image.jpg Araqiel hummed out his annoyance at having to stop but knew he could do nothing about it. He had no idea how the human's car works. I think it best if I stay hidden. He told her while pondering the idea of of bandages. I am not comfortable with you touching my wings. I can repair them when I return to my homestay.... But perhaps a blanket to prevent passerby from becoming alarmed.

Besides, I doubt any one apothecary contains enough bandages for my wings..

She merely nodded in response, placing the nozzle of the gas pump into the slot to fill up the tank before heading inside the gas station. The night was suddenly extremely quiet without the purr of her baby's engine.

"Do you maybe have a blanket I could buy?" she asked the man behind the counter, who seemed a little too... well shaven to be working at a middle-of-no-where, broken down gas station.

"Yes, of course," he answered, his overly-bright smile and sickly sweet tone creeping her out a bit as he stepped out from behind the counter and led her to a shelf of blankets. They weren't the greatest quality, but, they would do she imagined. None were too scratchy or uncomfortable. She grabbed one, purchased it, and headed back out the door.

But, she couldn't shake the wigged out feeling that the man had given her, and when she looked back at the building she could've sworn she saw him staring at her with the same creepy smile. Shivering slightly and climbing into the car after her tank had been fully filled, Steph handed the simple gray blanket she had bought back to Araquiel.

"So, Montana, eh?"

image.jpg Araqiel had been watching the exchange from the car and blanched as soon as he recognized the man. Not so much by his looks but by his soul. He was relieved when the female came back out unharmed, but then it wasn't her her they wanted was it? Araqiel did the only thing he could in his condition.

Reopening the wound on one of his wrists he used his vessel's blood to draw a symbol of protection on the back of the seat in front of him. When the female came back he hissed at her... Like a cat. In an attempt to quite her and quickly did damage control in his usual, quieter, way of speaking.

I apologize. I don't wish to frighten you, but we need to leave. Right now preferably. The man you just spoke to has ill intentions.

Stephanie watched him reopen a wound with her jaw agape in shock, though, she couldn't think of what on earth she could say. Looking back at the man, who was quickly closing on the car, she merely turned and turned the key to start the car. Araquiel had hissed at her, like a cat, and for the moment she was mostly focused on getting away from that man. She knew that she'd had a bad feeling about him, and, whatever he wanted to do to Araquiel, it couldn't be good. She'd just met him, but Steph felt that he was worth protecting; he was a good person- or, whatever he was. It was just something she could... sense.

The engine roared as she headed back towards the highway, and small chips of gravel stirred up behind her back wheels. The man had hurried his pace, and so had Steph's heart. Quickly gaining speed and entering the freeway again, she still didn't feel safe in any sense of the word. What had Araquiel gotten himself- and by now her- into? Steph couldn't change her mind now however, as they were solidly heading to the north, and she wasn't sure she would if she could. She'd always wanted a life of adventure. Sure, this isn't exactly what she'd thought that it would mean, but, it was for sure the start of an adventure. She could feel it.

image.jpg Araqiel sighed in relief, not realizing he had been holding his breath, as soon as he felt they were out of harms way. I fear I have endangered you unnecessarily. He told her sadly, if you don't wish to be envolved any longer all I ask is that you take me to my family's homestay. But you are free to leave me whenever you wish...

IMG_3266_1024x1024.jpg

Steph looked back at him through the reflection of her rearview mirror for a long moment before switching her gaze back to the road out of a safety habit. She let the silence run on for a few seconds longer before letting out a long sigh and a quiet chuckle.

"Kid-sorry- Araquiel, I'm so not smart enough to get out while I still can," she replied with an amused smile, amused at how in less than a night her life had been completely altered. Maybe not swung 180 degrees, but definitely altered," now, let's head for montana."

Intelligence has very little to do with doing a good deed.
He told her as he fiddled with the blanket, opening it to its full potential to cover himself. It didn't cover everything, but it did enough that if someone happened to look in they would see at a glance a young child taking a nap in the back seat. Araqiel closed his eyes again, attempting to ignore how awful the blanket felt against his raw wings, and resumed clutching the water bottle-gift to his chest again. He didn't sleep however, even if he wanted to he knew he wouldn't be able to yet. His circadian cycle (sleep cycle)wasn't at that point yet.

Steph looked back at Araquiel curiously. She definitely had to keep the colloquialisms to a minimum when talking with him. Or, at the very least, teach a few to him. He seemed to be asleep, so, for the moment she continued to drive. Their next stop would be somewhere in Wyoming.

(a bit of a time skip in here?)

image.jpg
Araqiel could no longer deny it. They were being followed. He had felt the same presence behind them for some time now, just after their last stop was when he supposed he felt it, and it's been in and out of his field of awareness ever since. Now he's propped himself up on his hands and knees so he can look out the back window searching for a face to match the soul he feels, careful to keep his wings covered. Eventually he spots the same man from their last stop sitting behind the wheel of a large black suv.

I have a feeling we are being followed. The man from your previous stop is in a large black car a short distance behind us. ... He must not know about where I live.

Abby-Brothers-picture-6.jpeg

She glanced back in her rearview mirror, first at Araquiel, then at the black car that had definitely been behind them for far too long.

"Alright..." she said simply, pulling off of the road they were on at the first exit and onto a rather deserted road. Thankfully though, he would lead them off their course. Hopefully, this would convince the man behind them that they were still heading to their destination, even though the Impala was now headed more towards the west again than the north.

{i'll let you tell the man's side of the story for now? i just want to make sure his actions are to your liking Cx}
