the popov family wasn't always a magical one. in fact, it wasn't until the year 1008 that they even knew of the existence of such craft. a religious family, the patriarch - vladimir - was a well respected priest. his family was large, he had 12 sons and two daughters. they were a happy family.

until his youngest children discovered they weren't exactly normal. a pair of twins, a boy and a girl - anastasia and andrei. it began in her and then through practice he found the magic too. only children at the time of discovery, they had a great deal of fun with it. but that's when their father discovered it.

at the tender age of 16, anastasia gave herself up as the witch in order to spare andrei from the punishment. she was burned at the stake and andrei was forced to watch. the pain of seeing his other half burned alive proved to be too much for her, and he released a curse so vile and deadly that he should have been to put to death then.

the curse sentenced those around him to a fate worse than death, but he felt his sister had been avenged. so began the line of popov wizards - practically royalty amongst the russian magi. within 200 years they had become household names amongst the public. they were feared. they were vile. they were killers.

they couldn't be tied to the hate crimes against those without their gifts, but everyone knew. it was easy to tell. from the way they spat at those not of their lineage. those without magic. those responsible for the death of anastasia.

centuries passed and their views did not change, until recently. three of the newest generation of popovs found themselves in britain, due to some sort of "necessary inconvenience" as their father put it. they didn't mind growing up in london, it was where their mother was from and it was where she wanted to be. they weren't supposed to know she was dying - of a disease muggles could cure had they not been such bigots.

maxim was the oldest, a wild child with a lot of views that differed from his parents. natasha came next - daddy's favorite little devil. and the last child born was alonya. she was frail, and almost didn't survive the harsh winter she was born into.

they were 10, 6, and 4 when they moved to london. it came as no surprise when their father - alexander - was furious with maxim's increasing interest in muggle life. it came as less of a surprise that natasha grew into her father's shoes quite well - the hatred of muggles growing in her gut every day. alonya, however, had yet to start school and form her own opinions.

their mother died the year she finally got to go to hogwarts. it devastated her, and she threw herself into art and reading. becoming a hermit of sorts. natasha did not mourn her mother, death was just a part of life to the girl. she just became that much more of her father's favorite than before. maxim mourned his mother, but felt freedom from his father - and left the family entirely. he spent all his days at the school, until he graduated and took his inheritance and went to find himself his own niche.

it was a year later that he came back into the lives of the girls. rejected entirely by natasha - called a traitor to their family, she stood up to him with all the force a gryffindor would be expected to have. her twisted moral compass tricking her into believing she was right - the praise her father gave her convincing her.

alonya, on the other hand, had began to form her own opinions of those considered vile by her family. it was then that the rift between the popov sisters cracked open to become a cavern. she may as well had been disowned, as cold as her sister and father became towards her. she was a traitor in their eyes. she left them, for the muggles.
