Garmungdur, Viktor

Raparth

Oracle of Dimensional Science
Name: Viktor Gregori Garmungdur

Nickname: "Garm" (originally a joke call-sign coined by Corinthia, it stuck and gained traction among the other pilots)

Age: 27

Gender Identity: Male

Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual

Birth date:      21/12/2499

Place of birth:      Tranquility, Lunar Settlement

Ethnic background:      German/New American

Marital Status: Widowed

Previous Area of Residence: USE's Guangzhou Shipyards

-Describe the environment in which he chooses to live:  Viktor keeps his space clean, although it tends towards disorganization.  While he has generally lived in bustling areas (whether a military base or a large city) and enjoys the added stimuli when brainstorming, he tries to eliminate distractions from his environment once he is starting his work.  He tends to prefer a clean, functional look to his environment, rather than add any (as he would call it) "ostentation."

Appearance:

-Height: 190cm

-Weight: 86 kg

-Misc: He has a cybernetic implant in the lower back of his skull, interfaced with the brain by an artificial neural network, and is of his own design.  It allows mental communication with certain compatible systems (currently not much outside of his lab and residence).  While the top section tends to be covered by his hair, some of the blue-silver metal is visible down

Personality:

-Good Traits:
Brilliant -
Viktor is considered one of the greatest scientific minds of his generation, developing systems even in advance of more widely-accepted theory.  A true polymath, he has an immense breadth of knowledge and quickly picks up the nuances of any field he chooses to focus on.

Drive -  The conviction that knowledge is always an improvement and that wasted time is wasted opportunity constantly pushes Viktor to accomplish the most that he can.  While not necessarily unbreakable, he has taken the death of his spouse as a call to action, in order to protect as many lives as possible.

Congenial - While he has not had many long-term friendships, he is always happy to work with others when they have something to add.  He thrives on brainstorming with others so that they can help create or catalyze the solution in his mind.  As he truly believes that cooperation is the most effective path to progress, he is extremely honest and forthcoming (sometimes more than others appreciate).

-Bad Traits:

Erratic - While he might have made great strides in through the projects he has pursued, Garmungdur has never been good about following an established pattern of research.  When forced to work on a topic that is not the focus of his current muse, his progress slows to a crawl.  He might create a new point-defense system for a battlecruiser, but when it comes it implementing across the fleet (or to ground forces), his inspiration fades.

Disconnected - Perhaps as a result of years in a research setting (or perhaps as part of what lead him there), Viktor is prone to becoming overly focused on his current projects and either forgetting or ignoring other concerns, be they food, sleep, or other people.  It usually takes an outside party to ground him again.

Hubris - Not everything in the world holds his interest, but on a deep level Garmungdur truly believes that, given adequate resources (and adequate time, if fate is generous), he really can accomplish anything.  This also leads him to blame himself for failings even when they may be beyond his control, as he is certain that he could have done it properly.

Likes: Seeing something new, Difficult challenges, Skillful work, People who push boundaries and are successful, Cooperation and honesty

Dislikes: Long-term monotony, Gaudiness, Undeserved arrogance, Tradition overruling efficiency, Political maneuvering, Competition that brings people down, Possessiveness, Aggressive behavior

Tolerants: Societal rigidity, Ill-advised or unsuccessful risk-taking,

Bio:  Viktor was born to a family deeply committed to the ideals of the Utopian Society of Earth.  This commitment allowed him to have a childhood free of want, but full of duty.  From a very early age, he demonstrated an intellect beyond his years and was soon entered into some of the most rigorous programs available.  It was clear that he took primarily after his mother, and so he eventually attended the prestigious Copernicus Institute where he received a doctorate, as well as scholarly recognition of his dissertation detailing a set of potential avenues for developing a neural interfaced implant that could allow the user to mentally control devices up to and including Naval vessels.  Knowing he lacked the personality for becoming a soldier, Viktor nevertheless applied to work for government-backed research groups tasked with military projects.  He received placement at the Navy's shipyards at Guangzhou; while working on large collaboration tasked with creating better combat suits for use in a hard vacuum, he met, fell in love with, and eventually married Corinithia Biros in 2520.
She was the star test pilot in the program, possessing a drive to push each test to the limit, risking her life so that others would not.  Corinthia was always challenging Viktor to improve upon whatever project they were on.  They matched wits and seemed to bring out the best in each other; he helped her understand the technological intricacies behind the work, while she pushed him to appreciate the people the work was meant to serve.  In 2525, she and the other pilots were off to the base at Mars Zeta-46-A-28 to run trials on hardsuit designed to counter enemy drops from low orbit.  The last conversation they had ended with him cautioning her to be careful of overburdening the antigrav, to which she gave her traditional response of, "You know me, I can handle anything"
In the months following the news of the attack, Garmungdur tried to bury himself in his work, but grew frustrated with the feeling that he was focusing on such small problems when there were so many more pressing issues.  He was certain that the military knew more than they were telling him, but was hardly in a position to push for more.  After one of many conversations with his mother, in which she asked him to look towards the future, rather than being set on the past, Viktor decided to do just that.  He applied for a position at Terra-Magna, given the reputation of both it and the Ion Program, Viktor was sure that he could both pursue his own goals as well as fanning the fire of genius in the young minds that earned admission.
