The Sky Dragon

Description

Sky Dragons are characterized by their long, serpent like bodies and many short legs. They have crystal like scales that appear white with a rainbow luster in color. A long mane of white hair trails the sky dragon's neck and back. These dragons are best suited for flight, but are known to sometimes swim. On land they cannot travel fast due to their stature. Sky dragons grow slowly and can take up to several decades to reach full sizes, which are large enough to fly several humans easily. The lifespan of a sky dragon can extend beyond a thousand years. As sky dragons age, they develop 'wisdom', and can communicate in the tongue of other species.

History

Like most dragons of Morganna, the sky dragons were historically feared and hunted. While sky dragons were feared for their large sizes and seemingly endless lives, it was primarily because of uncertainties they caused. These dragons are capable of reaching great speeds in flight, and the forces produced when flying full speed can cause sudden shifts in weather patterns. The people of Morganna came to associate sightings of sky dragons with these unpredictable shifts of weather, and believed sky dragons were directly capable of controlling the weather. This is not true, however; as the sky dragon only indirectly affects it with forces produced while flying. Sky dragons bring forth great winds and storms. They can also create thunder when passing through clouds and can produce twisters. This is why they were named "sky dragons".

In sunlight, the crystal scales of the sky dragon produce reflections in the sky similar to rainbows. These reflections are unlike natural rainbows because they dart quickly across the sky. This is because the rainbows only appear when the sky dragon is in flight, and the reflections move in sync with the dragon. This phenomenon became known as the "shooting rainbow". Shooting rainbows were also associated with sudden shifts in weather.

Aurum: The Sky Dragon

The most famous sky dragon recorded in history is Aurum, the dragon of Morganna. Morganna and Aurum led the first unit of dragon riders into battle, and communicated in battle with whistle commands from Morganna's tin whistle. Legend has it Aurum still resides in the ruins of Morganna's castle, forever awaiting the return of his great master.
