Why? What happened to those Houses to make you care for him?
His entire family got slaughtered because Lord Hollard at the time of the Defiance of Duskendale decided to side with their overlord, House Darklyn. The Defiance started as a tax despite between the Mad King Aerys and Lord Darklyn and escalated to a full on kidnapping/siege/hostage situation that ended with pretty much every member of House Darklyn and House Hollard executed. Only Dontos survived since he was a child at the time and Selmy, who had just rescued the king, begged for the boy's mercy.

I'm not saying that House Darklyn and House Hollard wasn't at fault, because it was a risk they took and it backfired on them. I just feel for Dontos since, due to no fault or say of his own, his entire family was killed in front of him and his house name was practically pulled through the mud for all time. I mean it's bad for Jaime when he got branded Kingslayer but at least he sort of had his house's support for a time, and that was his fault/decision. Was it any wonder that through all the shame, trauma and growing up a friendless orphan Dontos end up turning into a drunkard?

And finally, when he reached the time of clarity, of revelation and the moment he's found the courage and strength to pick himself up, become a true knight, and stand up for what's right, Littlefinger's men turns him into pincushion with crossbow bolts. :(

Haelga doesn't think too positively of Conn, I'm warning you now
Hit me with your best shot.

Fun Fact ; I had Haelga sitting on The Seastone Chair, so if she ever did take The Iron Islands from Conn, it would be some epic foreshadowing.

Oh shit, when Aerys was captured? I never connected the names.
Well, back when Aerys had his one way pissing match against Tywin, still his Hand at the time, House Darklyn said no to paying the tax, and so Aerys wanted to prove that he was a capable king without his Hand, rode with a few guards and one Kingsguard to arrest Lord Darklyn. Of course underestimation plus riding into a defiant Lord's seat of power equals clusterfuck, so one dead Kingsguard later Aerys finds himself a hostage to House Darklyn and Tywin ends up showing up with a cavalry only to get stalemated when Darklyn sent him a message that any aggression would get the king's throat slit. Selmy took it upon himself to mount a one man rescue crew since he's freakin Gandolf and the rest, as they say, is history.

Well, think of it this way. Your father sends you as far as possible away, to be raised by strangers everyone views as insane. Then when your father dies, your older brother sends you even farther away, to find a rock the size of a football, something that takes you five years.

She has no love for Conn, to say the least. She's hoping though, that he can discover what she's learned, and try and better the Iron Islands, but we all know that shit isn't happening, so it can lead up to plenty of drama.

I feel like I'm going to love their relationship- whether they become friends, or enemies. I'm going to have a quick snack and then I'll start my reply. Gotta' shove some Filicity and Aerea in there as well!

Define "better the Iron Islands." Is she looking for more equality between genders, moving away from ostracizing the Farwynds, going back to/further away from the Drowned God? What sort of reform is Haelga looking for? Or is she looking for something other than a social reform?

And hilariously, Haelga might just abandon the Iron Islands all together for now. Move back to the fa

In the books, the Iron Islands are dirt poor at best. They cling now to an idealized tradition that was basically just stealing from others because they were strongest. But they haven't been stongest since Harrenhall was razed to the ground. She is trying to fix... well.. basically everything you mentioned. The Farwynds can lead to the salvation of the Iron Islands, in her gaze. The ability of the Farwynd Navigators allows her to monopolize the trade she will try and create between the Iron Islands and Essos. Bringing in Westerosi products to Essoi markets in exchange for exotic goods like silk, gold, and spice, things that can enrich the Iron Islands is something she views as incredibly important. If the Ironborn can learn to pay the Gold Price with the Essoi, they can finally move on to something other than raiding an undefended village or two in order to sustain themselves every time the realm goes into chaos.

Alrighty! I look forward to it! And I feel like they are more likely to be enemies, considering how Conn is planning to start up raiding again, and his crazy schemes involving a dragon egg.

Both the Greyjoy siblings are crazy, just in different ways.

Fair point. Much more self sustaining than constant raid on the shorelands in terms of upping the standard of life on the Iron Islands. It's almost a parallel to what views Cerys and Hjalmar had in Witcher 3, did you perchance draw inspiration from that?

Man, I was also kind of hoping for some smart ass remark from Ravenna about how the Queensguard couldn't defend her an hour after she got crowned, considering she almost got killed. I would have Martyn do it, but it's not really his style. Ah well.

I have never played a Witcher game in my life.

And allow me to edit that into my post before someone else postd

God, that's such a good game. Skellige was one of my favorite zones, I think Novigrad wins out for having a city vibe to it, I half expected it to be like a skyrim city.

Neither of my characters are men. Yours is. Also skyrim cities are garbage. I didn't like Skyrim that much at all

I was late to the skyrim train, playing it in like 2013 for the first time. Did two play throughs, by the second one I got bored. Couldn't mod due to it being an xbone game. It was fun, but it felt like it coulda been so much more.

Well, if you like an immersive world that's delivered in a competent RPG, you give them a try. They're pretty good games overall.

Right? I love the sheer storytelling and how Geralt ends up in a bunch of random but world shaping events when he's only really trying to find someone that's essentially his daughter. I would have to agree with you in terms of zones. There's just so much story within the walls of that one city alone (even if it's "the largest city in the world"). My favorite scene has to be the battle of Kaer Morhen, especially if you've recruited everyone. That fight between Eskel and Caranthir was one of the best cutscene fights I've ever seen in a game.

Eskel would've won too had Caranthir not cheated with his teleport ability :P

It was amazing until I realized each major battle between a nation-wide rebellion and a continent-spanning empire consisted of like five guys swinging swords around for all of two minutes.

That killed it

Yeaaah uh. I killed Keira. . . . So I couldn't recruit everyone. She tried to use me, and I fucked her life up for it. She even tried to have the vertical tango with me! So yeah, that happened. . But the story telling for The Witcher 3 was top notch. From the smallest quest to the main story, albeit a bit weaker in the end. But by no means bad. My ending was pretty satisfying as well. I hope the next RPG CDProjekt makes has the same dedication put in.

I was really, really hoping for something big. Like, real big, to happen. The Civil War quest chain was too predictable, repetitive, and short. Every quest chain was too short, honestly. The only part that extends the game is grinding for good weapons/armors.

Yea, it's hard to do something large scale with the engine Bethesda uses. Oblivion did a better job in terms of simulating a large scale battle but I see what you mean.

I didn't blame her since she honestly wasn't trying to be malicious towards me (also I slept with her *shrug*). To me she was just a scared woman that made some poor choices and about to make another one that would get her tortured and killed (or just killed, by me) by the sick bastard known as Radovid the Stern and his goons. I mean if I killed everyone who slights me in that game more than half the NPCs would be dead by the end lol.

Yeaaaah. . . I RP'd that a bit as the No-Shit Liam Neeson on a quest. She wasted my time. She died. I did like the Bloody Baron though, very nice guy. I also went with the cheerful Triss as my true love. Yen seemed a bit too demanding for my liking. . Is it possible to get Triss at Kaer for the battle if you don't tell her to stay at the docks? Doesn't that force a relationship no matter what? Like, if I wanted to replay with a Yen-centric story, would Triss leave at Novigrad?
