Bending Academy

Excited. I guess that's how you could describe how Mink felt. She is devastated that she would have to leave her farm and family, but she was also super excited that she would get to go practice her new found powers. The car ride to her new school was excruciatingly long and boring. But when she made it and saw the huge school the sleeping butterflies in her stomach suddenly came to life. Nervously getting out of the car she said goodbye to her grandma and started to walk into the huge building. Just as she reached the door to get inside her foot got caught on the mat outside and she fell, face first, into the door.

((sorry it's kind of short))

One of the upper classmen rushes over. "Oh my gosh! Are you okay?!" She asks as she helps Mink to her feet and helps with her bags. "Here, let me help you to your room. "Which room number?"

(Don't worry about it! My intros are normally a lot longer than what I tend to type once into the roleplay.)

"Um..." Mink replied still in a daze from falling onto the door. She clumsily reached into her pocket and pulled out a folded, wrinkled paper with her schedule and room number. She handed the paper to the girl and held her head as she waited for the dizziness to stop. When everything finally stopped swimming around in circles she picked up one of her two bags and started to follow the girl inside the school.

The inside was even more magnificent than the outside. The walls were lined with beautiful tapestries and paintings. The first floor was just the lobby and some people's offices. Mink wondered if this is what the first floor looks like what do the rooms look like? Stumbling up the stairs, still making a fool of herself, she tripped a little but caught herself before she could cause herself anymore damage.

The girl shows Mink her room, helping her get her bags in before leaving to help others.

For Derek, this school may be a blessing in disguise. His parents were fed up with him disobeying them, fighting, getting in trouble with the law for minor(ish) crimes and coming home drunk and/or high. If he hadn't been able to come to this school he would have been kicked out of the house. But this was like a second chance for him. For the last month of summer his parents had been busy getting him the right uniform, everything he needed for his dorm and just getting everything ready. His home town was an hour and a half from the school, which was better than a lot of people. Normally each school for benders covered everyone up to a three mile radius around the school.

The day to move in was soon there and before he knew it all his things were in his room. The dorms were all U shaped and four floors. One long hall was male and the other female then the short hall was were for the RA's and common rooms. Each long hall had two, hall shared bathrooms, which were not co-ed. Freshmen were on the top floor and seniors on the bottom floor, and the buildings were old, so no elevators. The rooms were nice too, everything seemed pretty new since they had recently redone the dorms. There were two loftable beds, a desk, a dresser and a closet for each person, then each room had one sink. Each dorm had a courtyard outside in the U, that related to the element housed. The ones that controlled all of them had a combination of all of them, just downsized to fit everything. Fire dorm had a fire pit and area to sit around and such, water had a big pond, air had lush grass to sit in and mediate, and earth had trees and a garden.

It didn't take him long to move into his room and unpack everything. He didn't have much personal stuff so he didn't have much to unpack anyway. He was there before his roommate and his parents left soon after he was settled. The building and whole campus was alive with activity, all the upperclassmen that had moved in a week before were helping move the freshmen in, the air types have a big advantage over the others. Since the powers didn't even come out until they were 15, not a single freshman knew how to control their element and the majority hadn't even 'bended' anything yet. Those who had, it was a pure accident most likely caused by some emotional outburst.

Derek went down and to the back of the buildings, where a few upperclassmen roamed to get away from the craziness of move in. He walked down the path towards the woods. Once past the tree line he stepped off the path and pulled out a pack of cigarettes and a lighter, lighting up and smoking as he explored the forest a little bit, careful not to explore too deep.

Mink looked out her window, too tired to unpack more than the small bag she had that held her electronics and smaller things. Instead of watching the water ripple in the pond on the water side of the school she watched the tree line as little critters jumped from in and out of it. A boy, about her age, suddenly appeared in her vision and disappeared into the forest just as quickly as he appeared. A small light flickered in the forest as he disappeared, signaling that he lit a cigarette.

Making gagging noises to express her disgust in smoking she turned away from the window just in time to see her room mate step through the door. "Oh, uh, hi," Mink said nervously as she rubbed the back of her neck. The other girl giggled at Mink's timidness and at the weird noise Mink had made as she entered.

"Hi! I'm Jamie!" The girl introduced herself excitedly.

"Oh, I'm Mink. Nice to meet you," A slight blush of nervousness crept up Mink's cheeks. She put out her hand and the two shook hands. "Well I'm kind of tired so I think i'm going to take a nap. If you need anything or need help just wake me up okay?"

Mink went over to the bottom bed of the bunk beds and curled up facing the wall. Eventually sleep took over and she faded into black nothingness.

((sorry it's been a couple days. I haven't had a chance to get on rpnation))

Derek walks for awhile, sticking to the paths, taking in the silence and beauty as he smoked. It was a terrible habit and he needed to stop, but it helped him relax, which was hard for him. He finishes the cigarette and sighs, putting it out before tossing it. There weren't any trashcans and he wasn't going to just carry it around. He continues to walk for a good two hours before finally circling back to his room. He greets his roommate before getting into his bed and just playing around on his phone. Nothing was planned for the day besides move in so he had nothing to do until dinner. Students could come and go as they pleased to eat in the dinning hall, three meal periods planned out for when breakfast, lunch and dinner would be served. When he gets hungry he gets out of bed and heads to eat. His roommate had left some time ago to explore the campus and try to make friends. He was perfectly fine with going to eat by himself though.

Once at the dinning hall he grabs a tray and goes through the buffet style area to get his food before moving to where all the seats where. It was a huge hall, rows and rows of tables and a large table at the front for the teachers when there were feasts. He finds an empty seat and sits, quietly starting to eat.

(It's fine! I understand.)

Mink woke up to someone shaking her and softly calling, "Hey, honey wake up." She softly stirred awake and sat up, rubbing her tired eyes.

"Are you okay?" Mink asked, wondering why she was woken up.

"I'm fine," Jamie replied, "But I wanted to wake you up so you could get some food. I'm sure you're hungry."

"I guess so," Mink said to make her room mate happy instead of telling her that she would much rather good back to sleep and for Jamie to leave her alone.

To say the dining hall was crowed would be an understatement. There were so many people, and so much food. Jamie and Mink pushed their way through crowds until they reached the buffet like food table. Jamie piled on as much food as the plate could hold, while as Mink barely got anything. Jamie lead the way, as always it seemed like, and lead them toward an almost empty table where a boy sat. They sat down and Jamie introduced herself to him. Mink didn't say anything though. She took small little bites, and played with her food instead.

"Come on! You've got to eat something," Jamie scolded and tried to force Mink to eat. Mink refused however, for she had become very anorexic over the past few years. She would have told Jamie about it, but it was too personal and it was easier to refuse food then to explain what had happened, which would then lead to tears. Jamie had eventually given up and they ate in silence, well Mink did while Jamie jabbered to the boy who sat in front of them.

Speaking of the boy he looked oddly familiar, almost like the boy who had disappeared into the forest earlier that afternoon.

Derek was surprised when two girls came and sat in front of him. One was overly chatty while the other was pretty quiet. He liked the quiet one. He wasn't against talking and Jamie seemed nice. But she was just a handful. Jamie eventually leaves to go meet other people, leaving Derek and Mink alone. He glances at her "Um...h-hi" He says softly, offering a small smile.

"Oh, uh, h-hi," Mink replied nervously, not expecting the boy to talk to her. But then again Jamie had left the two alone. Looking up she took in the boy's appearance. His shaggy-ish black hair fell around his face like a perfect picture frame, and a little bit of stubble outlined his chin. His blue eyes sparkled just a little as they stared into her own blue eyes. Looking away she picked up her sketch book that she had brought down here without anyone noticing.

Flipping to a blank page she started to sketch someone. A boy. As she continued to sketch the boy slowly started to turn into the one sitting in front of her. Freaking out because she wasn't trying to draw him, Mink quickly slammed the book closed and reach for her glass of water that sat in front of her. Taking a big gulp to calm herself down Mink watched the boy again as she set down the glass. Shaking her head she looked down at her food where she had only eaten two small bites.

He goes quiet again as she picks up what looked like a sketch book. She didn't want to talk to him, that was clear. He finishes his food and stands, picking up his tray and walking off. This was going to be sooooo much better than his normal school. He tosses his trash and puts his tray in the stack of others before walking out. He had spotted his roommate across the dining hall as he left as he knew he would still have the room to himself. He liked that better. He liked his alone time to just think and not have to think of what to say or do. He shoves his hands in his pockets as he walks out.

I guess I scared him away? Mink though as she got up and threw away her food. Pushing past people she made her way outside to do some exploring. She emerged from the crowd on what looked to be the fire's side. There was a bonfire thing in the middle of a gravel pit. Stepping toward the fire someone scolded her and told her to get out of fire territory. I guess the elements don't mix really do they? Quickly walking away she found the water side of the school where a pond sat. Little fish swam and plaed in the water, sending little ripples across the surface.

Plunk! Plunk! Plunk! The rain echoed through out the forest. An excited pulse rang through Mink as she sat down on the bench closest to the pond. She loved the rain. It always seemed to wash away her anxiety and worries. Laying down on the bench she watched the rain pour down and send the pond into a rippling fury.

He notices that no one was in his courtyard and sits down in one of the wooden seats by the fire pit and leans up, lifting his head and closing his eyes as the rain drops on his face. He too loved the rain, although he loved thunderstorms even more. He completely tunes everything else out besides the rain, relaxing against the chair. He was hidden slightly in the courtyard so no one would bother him.

Boom! Thunder echoed off the trees, startling Mink awake from her slumber. She was sopping wet and her clothes clung to her skin. She laughed, which echoed around in the quite air. Taking in a deep breath the rain smell filled her nostrils and she laughed again with glee. "God I love the rain!" She shouted, figuring that no one was outside since most people didn't like the rain. Mink was always the happiest outside in the rain. She let her true self shine and didn't really care who saw her.

"Why can't it rain all the time?" Mink questioned loudly while she picked up a rock and skipped it a few times across the surface of the water. Finally Mink could let all of her worries and depression wash away. All of her worries about being judged and people hating her. Crack! This time lightning bolted through the sky sending a flash of light across the sky through the dark evening.

Derek smiles as lighting cracks across the sky and thunder rumbles around him. He stands after awhile and moves away from his dorms courtyard, glancing around. Everyone was inside to get out of the rain but movement catches his eye. He walks over to see who was out as well. He half expected the water courtyard to be full of water types but instead he only found the girl from before. "Hey!" He calls out and smiles softly "Like the rain too?"

Mink jumped back. Not expecting anyone to be out while it was raining. She giggled at herself and replied, "Yeah, of course!" Mink dropped a rock she had picked up into the pond and walked over to the boy. "Hey you're the boy from the woods and the dinner table," She remarked when she looked at him more closely.

((kind of short, sorry))

He raises an eyebrow "The woods? I didn't see you in the woods. Dinner yes...but..." He shrugs a little as he walks over to the pond and sits down, watching the water as the rain falls.

(Don't worry about it! It can shorten a little as we really get into it.)

"Oh oops, sorry. I might have been people watching earlier," Mink answered. "But anyways I'm Mink! And who are you?" She walked over to the bench where the boy sat and sat on the opposite side of him, where her head was laying earlier. She tilted her head back, letting the rain splash on her face.

"Derek" He smiles softly as he tilts his head up towards the rain, closing his eyes "So I guess you found bird watching too boring?" He jokes softly.

"I guess. I don't know. I just looked out the window and there you were," Mink replied, looking up at the pale gray sky. Mink thought about mentioning that he smoked, but figured he probably didn't want to talk about it. "So what element are you?" Mink questioned, tilting her head to look at Derek.

"All of them, although my core is fire. What about you?" He opens his eyes and looks over at her, quietly studying her. It was pretty uncommon for fire benders or people with fire as their core to like the rain and it was hardest for them to learn water but for some reason he had always been drawn to it. Not only did he love the rain but he loved to swim too.

"Lucky! I wish I got all four!" commented Mink, "Guess mine! It should be pretty obvious." Mink sat back up and held her hand out, palm facing the sky, to let the water splash on her hand. She turned toward Derek and sat cross-legged on the skinny bench. "If you need another hint besides for the obvious ones, we're complete opposites."

"really?" Mink questioned. The rain started to slow and the thunder and lightning stopped. As the rain slowed so did Mink. Her bubbly, happiness started to fade with the light as night approached.

He nods "mmmhmm" Although the rain was stopping, which was always disappointing, Derek loved the night. But he could see she was fading fast and stood "I guess we have a big day tomorrow....we should head inside to dry off and get ready for bed..."
