The Hidden Temple

Well, was waiting on @Action Replay to possibly acknowledge Oustus, but I suppose that'a not a total necessity.

Heya @Grey, totally unrelated topic, but I have a simple dice system I pretty much stole and modified from a basic RP system I found a while ago have been working on, and I wanted to get your opinion on its effectiveness. I'm going for simple here, it's more of a story-telling device than solid numbers, so it's very flexible, but I wanted to see if you thought it was balanced enough to be put to use.

GM rolls to set difficulty.

Is that the only issue then? It's more of a story-progression device than a fixed system, so harder tasks would have major penalties to them, but still leaving the miniscule chance that sheer dumb luck or ingenuity can pull them through it.

I mean, they have at most a 2d12 against a DM's 20, not including penalties that would be applied, so more like d20+5 or +10 in strenuous cases. There's always the chance the DM will crit-fail, but that might make for more interesting plot, no? I'm open to suggestions, but I don't want to have to catalogue difficulties for every scenario and then balance them against each other, that just makes it tedious for an RP that's supposed to be plot-based, not system-driven.

You don't have to catalogue difficulties for every scenario. You have some guidelines, and you trust a GMs intuition when it comes to setting difficulties. Having the GM roll the difficulty introduces more randomness, and while that can force you to improvise, it can also derail things. It also slows things down - the less rolling, the better. May seem counterintuitive, but that's how it is.

Also, if you intend for the system to be used outside a digital space, that Stat model won't work - there are no odd numbered dice IRL, so it would have to operate in increments of 2. At that point you might as well roll 1d12 and add the stat. Assuming a cap of ten, that means the most any player can roll is 22 - so you have your hardest difficulty be 20 or 21.

The thing about using the d12 is how static it is - there is no curve. You'd get a better curve from 1d6; it can get you a 12, but the average is 7. It means you are most likely to roll 7 + stat, so assuming the average stat of a character is 3, an easy or moderate difficulty would be 10.

Honestly, I can think of a couple of systems that do exactly what you want - Unhallowed Metropolis does it with d10s very neatly.

If you noticed, all of the stats are exactly that, even-numbered all across the board. Even with the upgrading and downgrading of dice, it goes by increments of 2, a d8 becomes a d10 in exchange for a d8 lowering to a d6, etc.

But, if you have alternate systems, I'd be more than happy to look at them, as I said, this is my editing of an existing system, which I actually now realize is the Catalyst Game Labs system, makers of Shadowrun, while my version was a take on their Cosmic Patrol and Valiant genres.

This was mostly based on ability levels of the characters skills, having a d2 would obviously make them inept at it, a d4 would be acquainted with the topic, d6 would be below average, d8 is average, and d10 is exceptional. Since a d8 is average + d12 = 20, an opposing d20 didn't seem like a bad option, while exceptional could obviously surpass that with a little luck. If I were to remove the DM rolls and simply make it intuitive difficulty, would that be enough to salvage what I've got already, or should I scrap it and look for a different system?

Yeah, my bad. Things jumped the shark on campus and at home over last week/end. Schedule is tied up for tonight but I logged on to say posts tomorrow.

Well, I must say that the Unhallowed Metropolis system actually did work out rather well, I'd say. Kudos for the advice, Grey

No worries. I really want to run UMet sometime, but it's been oddly difficult to find players.

Well, I'm a sucker for gritty horror and eldritch terror RPs, so if you made one, I'd be interested, if I had the time. I have quite a bit on my as is, and with the upcoming moving season, I'm hesitant to add any more on for fear of dropping them like hot tamales.

Yep, I'm here. What do you need?

Also, good news everyone - we're getting a hosted project, so I might split group 2 up a bit.

What don't I need. so to roll for something you take the number you have in that skill and roll that number of d12's right?

Also how to perception.

Like howwww? :0

To roll, Kagu, you roll as many d12s as the relevant Attribute - so for perception, that would be Intuition.

And I dunno, stick you all in individual hot zones as tutorial threads, then have you meet up later.

Alright, folks, we're moved into a HP now!

Please split your character sheets into their own threads in the Character subforum.

Group two, I'll probably split you guys into four different threads. May require editing your current posts to pretend the other characters aren't around. Your choice.

Sweet, nice work. I'm pretty sure we didn't specifically mention that our characters were right next to each other at the moment, everyone kinda just wandered off in their own direction, so it'd be plausible to just assume they went separate ways.

Alright, done and done. Oustus is now detached from the group and ready to explore the derelict battleship.

Or what if we're all just really crazy bandi after an unknowable amount of time in the freezer? WHAT THEN GREY.

So Grey, any news on when we're gonna kick this off proper? I know we have more room now, how do you wanna set it up, individually?

*patiently impatient* xD

Oh, well that's a rub. Okay then, I guess all we have to do is wait xD

Yeah, sorry guys, my connection has been down since Friday. I should be able to sort things out today, but I've got a backlog to work through.

No worries, Grey, just take your time getting things back in order, it's been a slow weekend all around :)
