Oracle.jpgOracle
Oracle huffed, still looking into the timestream so her movements were a little more unsure, "That's ridiculous. How old are you? Being able to... to do something like that to your own timeline... what the hell, man?"

She sighed, "Ma'am, all due respect, I can't hit you. Your choosing to take a hit is satisfying and all, but I am definitely starting to get frustrated. Do you have anything else you want to see me do or are we done yet?" Oracle blinked and rubbed her eyes, turning off the future sight with a small groan.

Scile smiled and gave a big nod. "alrighty!" she said not caring at all about James rage, fumbling around in her pocket "lets see, Teddys number. Map to the covenant? Boarding ticket to the Ark? Uhh one of the knives that stabbed caesar. Signed edition of the 95 theses of Martin Luther. Sir Arthurs crown. Signed copy of Dracula's autobiography, Saint Mathiels cross. An Arrow of hou yi...Ah here it is! Spatial distortion ring!" Scile chimed before tossing the ring intron of her, the ring expanding into a gateway leading right to the cafe. Epherial confused poking his head through "....Hey Scile, I'll uh, I'll get the towels and ask boss to make some warm drinks." He quickly ducked back in as Scile gestured the gateway "Best cafe in LA!" She added before walking in. Thyris lifting Sato into a princess carry, taking the kids hand with a tentacle and leading her through the gateway.

"....Youve been here for two days and your causing me even more trouble" Shard complained as he was already brewing a hot pot of matcha Tea. He didnt know what tea to make but looking at the fucking bird goddess wearing excessively japanese clothes Matcha was a safe bet, "Yes yes, welcome to the Devils Tale bakery, Please take a towel and have a seat, I'll have tea ready in a minute" He said annoyed as he watched the group walk in. Epherial zipping back downstairs with a large pile of warm towels. two for each person. Handing them out with a smile he added " any requests for drinks not tea?" He was in full customer support mode as ruru just awkwardly sipped on her milkshake looking at the group. "So uhh Sis, whats with the group?" She asked Scile just laughing, "These were some fun people whose mission I crashed, seems the little kid was kidnapped and knows the Bird goddess." Rurus eyes went wide "she got kidnapped? By Hades... here one minute, she must be freezing in those clothes" She quickly ran up to her room, pulling out a large comforter and a big plushy, walking back downstairs, kindly handing her the plushy and putting the blanket around her. "there ya go~ its not much but. Even a little bit of comfort helps" she held the warm cup of matcha Epherial brought over, not wanting to overwhelm the little kid.

Ada grumbled into her knees, "Yeah whatever... probably doesn't matter in the long run... Just going to be a disappointment." She stayed quiet the rest of the drive. Yes, she was thinking about what to do, but what they could do was limited by her desire to keep him alive. How long could she really do that for, though? She desperately wanted a friend around her age, and having a boyfriend would be nice, yes, but... she also couldn't risk their home and lives getting messed up by some civilian boy. She went to her bedroom without bothering to say much else. Today sucked. She hurt so much still, and this crap on top of it was just stupid.

Around two, she decided to get up and head out, to wander around if nothing else. Someone had targeted her, was targeting her dad, but she didn't care right now. She wanted away from everyone she knew and that included him right now. No doubt he'd hear her leaving, she didn't bother being secretive about it since he'd figure it out anyway, but she also didn't bother to ask for permission first.

"I'll be back later. Love you."

Hannya

A thin frown pursed the samurai's lips from behind her mask, slowly walking after the spider doll with wary and even measured steps down the hallway after the spider-doll, fingertips continuing to rap slowly against the hilt of her blade. "If this gets us killed, I will ensure you are reincarnated into a jellyfish, 42." The Samurai was rather irritable, as opposed to the meek Unagi or the enamored SpiderDoll. As they entered the room Cyri was seated in, the woman stared ahead at the fact it was just...a young woman, likely around her own age if not a little younger than the both of them...petting a tarantula with a large pink bow on it. Beyond that, her Japanese was...awful, frankly. Passable, but not in a good way. Though there was the distinct instinctual feeling of danger all about them, goosebumps erupting across her flesh beneath her armor and clothes. They'd walked right into the den of a monster, quite willingly as well. Without much else to do she slowly approached the pillow and knelt down, legs beneath her as she adopted a proper posture, folding her hands in her lap. The feeling of danger and possible harm prickled at her mind, though she refused to let it sway her from her chosen path. The only option was forward, she would not turn around and run away from mere fright.

Hannya was silent through the little exchange between 42 and the 'Itsy Bitsy Spider' as she revealed herself, brow furrowing silently as she spoke. The woman's mind obviously had no means to slow down or pause, the only thing it knew was how to press onward, and then dart about in a dozen directions, like a bobtail that had gotten into catnip. "If I may ask," she started, voice uncomfortably cool and even-keeled. "What do you mean other ones...." The way her neck slowly twisted and swivelled, it was as if one could hear the rusted hinges of a door slowly being opened. "Forty Two, you fool, how many followed you? Out of kindness to you, Miss Cyri, I will not stain your carpet with her blood. I will be polite, and simply throttle her for her foolishness." The Samurai's threat wasn't entirely empty, nor was it entirely genuine, her hands balling into fists atop her legs.

Thomas Black

Thomas was content to chat with Selene for however long she wanted, obviously, though after a while she dozed off. With Selene napping Thomas's attention turned to the road ahead of them, cheek resting against the car window. "Hopefully we just end up speaking with Böhmer today. The less people that see me and Selene within arms reach, the better. I'm glad the old man's doing alright...wonder if he knows I'm alive. Pretty sure I was written off as dead due to the lab meltdown." Meanwhile, Mary had unfortunately misunderstood what Böhmer had requested. She thought he said 'within an hour'. Not 'in an hour'. And because of that, she was early for once, rather than somehow being late despite being a speedster. And because of that, straight to work she went. Mary darted this way and that as she worked on the tasks the good doctor had put before her.

As they arrived Thomas was uncomfortably silent, looking entirely out of place since he was in public with Selene. Maybe this was a bad idea...they just needed one picture to go viral with his luck, and he'd be in such a hole he'd never dig himself out of, let alone see his family again. What Thomas had been expecting was a much older german man looking like he was constantly keeping death back with a stick. What he wasn't expecting, no way to anticipate in fact, was Böhmer being a god...damned...cyborg. Thomas's eyes went wide, jaw slack as he simply stared at his once teacher, snapped back to reality as he was shaken back and forth. "Hello there, Doctor. It's good to...see you...sir. You look..ahm..different. I'm typically not very hungry, I don't eat much. Wait...students? Sir-" Böhmer was much more...energetic than he remembered, and much more...metallic. He could barely get a word in edge-wise, though his eyes went wide at the prospect of students. "Students? Doctor Böhmer-" too late, he was getting their attention. Dammit. What was worth, the crazy german was outright rambling about his daughter and his wife...in public...when he couldn't be seen near her. Double dammit. Thomas looked over to Tabby, mouth dry as cotton and jaw slack in shock, giving a weak noise in his throat as any noises he'd have made just died. Attention darted to Selene as she spoke, gently patting her on the head. "Not a robot...Doctor Böhmer is...was...is? Is a human...I'm as lost as everyone else." Thomas cleared his throat, glancing at the good Doctor, and then Selene, and then Tabby. "Ahm..well...Doctor Böhmer, could I borrow you to speak in privacy? Just a quick moment, sir." Mary, to her credit, had been keeping an otherwise respectful distance from the entire scene given how...awkward the gentleman who had walked in appeared to be, though she was within 'arms reach' of Böhmer as necessary, a clipboard in hand with a pen in the other.

"Ah, ja. Ja. Ve can talk in briffate," Dr. Böhmer said. He patted Selene's head and ushered her toward the students, "Schtutents, bleaze Henterdain zee child for ein moment. I vill pe right pack."

Selene looked totally out of place surrounded by a gaggle of college students, but she swallowed, "Um... s-so... what do you guys do at college? Like... is college fun?"

Dr. Böhmer walked off, the whir of robotics filling the hallway as he walked across it back into his office. He closed the door after Tabby and Thomas were both inside, "Now zen, vat is zee broblem? Tabby cleared her throat, "Sir, Doctor, Thomas is... well he's clearly alive, but his situation is complicated. My name is Tabby. I'm his 'handler' but... you don't have to consider me such. He's been kept by the military due to the effects of that accident on his body. He hasn't been allowed to see his child or wife since the accident, though... so I imagine that news of a letter to you is... jarring... especially since it sounds like she thinks he's dead... Anyway. Selene, Thomas's daughter, isn't officially here. Okay? We need to be careful about this so they don't take his child away."

Böhmer's eyes narrowed, "I do not take kindly to beople zat vould Himbrizon und uze beople as ein Hexberiment. Much less mein former schtutent und friend. Thomas Black

Thomas hurriedly followed after Dr. Böhmer towards his office, hands buried into his pockets and shoulders tensed up, skin practically crawling with every person who saw him. This was all so bad, he was certain this was going to end up biting him in the ass. "Dr. Böhmer, when did you become a cyborg?" There were obviously more pressing matters at hand, but the last he'd seen his teacher the man was basically a living corpse who was too stubborn to die. Now he was a hyper cyborg...what the hell was today. Though of course, Dr. Böhmer asked about the accident and Thomas could feel a knot tie itself into his stomach all over again. But that knot quickly unwound and tightened into a ball of lead. Dr. Böhmer had heard from Juliet? "Sir...I am..." Thomas was stumbling over his words, irritation gnawing at his mind and spreading like a wildfire into unruly anger. A deep breath in...hold for ten seconds, slowly deflate all of the air out of his lungs. Repeat the breathing exercises, relax...relax. Thomas's shoulders tensed and relaxed as he started to speak again. "Sir, the meltdown of the nuclear lab effectively mutated me far beyond recognition of what 'normal' is, though you can't see that at this moment. The United States Military effectively uses me for...other means, than my doctorate would have me doing. To encourage my cooperation, Selene and Juliet are kept well out of arms reach...I haven't seen Juliet in ten years, and Selene the same until just a day or so ago."

Thomas glanced to Dr. Böhmer's hand on his shoulder, forcing a weak smile. "I'm not allowed to, sir. I've limited to no contact with the outside world. The more people who continue to think I died in the lab accident, the better as far as military brass are concerned. I am forbidden from contact with colleagues and friends, be it through letter or otherwise...Tabby ends up having to deal with my moping more than anyone else, lately." Thomas paused, taking a deep breath before he locked eyes with the metallic face of his teacher. "Sir could I...see one of those letters, Juliet sent you? The most recent so I just...I'd like to know she's doing okay and where she's coming from."

Dr. Böhmer eyed Thomas with uncertainty, his own anger broiling, though he didn't show it, "It has peen tvo years or zo. Maype ein little less. Zomas... CHuliet und your daughder Zelene haffe peen... kebt from vu?" Tabby took a deep breath, watching Thomas with a wary look in her eye. The man scared the hell out of her whenever anger was concerned. She didn't say anything, though, letting Dr. Böhmer continue.

"Of courze, vu can zee zee letder," he said, shuffling through his desk to find it and hand it to him, "Vu might not like it zough. Sche zounds... defeaded und debrezed, Zomas. Understantaple if sche zinks vu're dead. Not to menzion sche zays zome schtrange zings zat make much more zenze giffen vat vu'fe chust told me. Zis is zee most recent one. Dr. Böhmer cleared his throat, despite not needing to at all, and allowed Thomas to read the letter. Tabby muttered to him in a hushed tone as he did so, "Be careful, please?"

Dear Dr. Heinrich Böhmer,
I have managed to write you today. I'm not supposed to, but the mailwoman is coming by to collect site mail and I've bribed one of the site guards to hand it over. I'm still working on a high-security nuclear project, so I'm not allowed to say anything. The others that are still alive from the accident are working with me on it. We've made some progress, which is nice... I think Thomas would have been proud of me.

There are some private projects I'm trying to work on in secret. I need supplies, though, and you're the only person I could think of. I'm sorry to ask, but can you please give your signature on the document attached and send it to the address listed? Thank you, if you can. If you're still kicking at this point... though I bet you'd fist-fight death if he tried to take you.

A guard told me about my child yesterday. I can't see her. She's being raised well in a Catholic church by a nice Father. I would have probably preferred a Shinto temple, but... I don't deserve to be picky. She's better off without me. I couldn't bear to face her - I couldn't even keep her father safe. Not that I have a choice at this point. I live here, after all. I don't even know that you'll get this so I'm just rambling on a piece of paper. I don't even know that they'll let this get to you. Maybe they'll catch it. They've caught letters before.

Still, my girl's a troublemaker, apparently. I wish I was allowed to go outside and see her. I haven't seen the other side of this wall in years. Even if I don't deserve her, I'd love to see her. Sometimes I stare at the night sky and wonder what she thinks of the same constellations I can see. I know she's in LA, so we can see the same sky, at least.

Since this is a government facility, I can't have things delivered directly. They'd catch it and not allow it in - too secure. The address I attached is a safe place. Just trust me, please. I'm close to a breakthrough. I can feel it. I just need to keep going. I can't stop until it's done.

Thanks,
Juliet Black

The letter was handwritten and rushed, like it was written with a shaky, tired hand, and it previously had another piece of paper attached to it - whatever Juliet wanted the doctor to sign. That had long since been mailed off, however. She sounded so... sad... not to mention it sounded like she was in a facility that she wasn't allowed to leave.

Thomas Black

Thomas felt a tremor run down his spine as Dr. Böhmer echoed the situation, a numb nod of his head. "Yes, sir. Carrot on a stick, and I'm the horse." Thomas slowly extended his hand to take the offered letter, listen to his teacher and friend carefully. "Sir-..." He took a slow shaky breath, his other hand shoved into his pocket clenching into a fist and unclenching slowly. He was right. This wasn't right. This had never been right. But after what Tabby had said in the car...he was growing more aggravated with Dr. Böhmer's commentary as well. Thomas wasn't an idiot, he was classified as a genius intellect with a doctorate in nuclear physics...they were simply offering insight, offering guesses. And as much as his inner voice cried out 'that can't be true, none of it can be', he was getting the distinct feeling they were onto something. Thomas's jaw set, working slightly as he gave a hollow nod to his teacher, eyes having the sparkle of angry tears that he would not let free. "Thank you, sir. I'd like that but...we can't. Because it can also backfire something terrible...they have too much they can use against me to justify what they're doing. Even Tabby knows that...she wouldn't say the quiet part out loud, I think. But the court of public opinion would only momentarily swing in my favor." It could be his purely pessimistic attitude and depression, but...he was right, he felt. Sure, the public would side with him initially. But when they found out what happened if he got angry, what he turned into...most people would scream to lock him up, if not kill him. Superpowers were one thing, turning into a WMD was another.

"Yes, ma'am," he echoed hollowly, looking over the letter. Juliet wasn't even allowed to see Selene...he understood him, but not even Juliet could see her daughter? It made sense why she was in adoption, but at least Thomas was given photos every once in a while! The next line though... 'She's better off without me'. Thomas felt it in his soul, the metaphorical shattering, his heart splitting and tearing. For those paying attention, a large vein could be seen throbbing in his temple and at the base of his neck, his pale complexion slowly gaining a more crimson hue. Thomas was beyond sad, sad was the default. Anger was where he was going, chest rising and falling as he tried his breathing exercises. Hadn't been outside of walls in years... "No...No...No..." A growl rumbled out of the base of his throat, entirely inhuman and unnaturally deep, going from a simple and common baritone to a Basso Profondo and deeper still. "How...how dare they. I'll kill them." Try as he might his breathing exercises weren't working, brow eyes slowly gaining an unnatural red tint as he visibly shook where he stood. He needed to remember the address. Memorize it. He could memorize entire textbooks and theorem, math that made people's heads spin, and he can remember this fucking address! His wife...his beautiful wife who was always so full of hope and happiness. She sounded so sad. Rationality was slowly going out the window, and he was fighting a quickly losing battle. But he couldn't change here, even if he knew that the monster would quickly go out hunting, he also knew it'd cost them L.A, if not more. He glanced at Tabby, pupils having gone reptilian slits in red irises as he stared at her, voice far deeper than usual. "Knock me out. Can't keep calm."

It was a simple and desperate request rooted in the recognition that if he stayed awake, he'd stay angry. And if he stayed angry, he'd just get angrier. And from there....everything would go wrong. "Do it!" Thomas barked in an otherwise unnatural fashion, veins bulging in both temples and up his neck as he tried desperately to keep calm, his mind alight with rageful fire and fury, an inferno for a psychic to notice quite readily most likely.

“Thomas…,” Tabby cautioned, moving up to him as he spiraled. She was shaking, but she put her hands on his shoulders, “Doctor… go head back out to your students just in case this gets a little messy, please. It’ll be okay.”

Dr. Böhmer slowly nodded and moved past the two, “I’m not sure what’s going on but it’s clear this is the effect you were talking about. I’ll… let the kids know this might be a while…”

Tabby stared him in the eyes, mentally corralling that section of his psyche, the ‘Beast’s Corner’. “Thomas, stay with me,” she said, weighing her options. Forcefully knocking Beast out earlier was exhausting. Doing so again would probably put her out of commission. Not to mention, his kid was around and knocking out her father wasn’t exactly a nice thing for her to witness. “It’ll be alright, Thomas. Just hold in there. Selene’s still in the building. We don’t know where Juliet is. We only have a lead. We need Thomas, not Beast. We need your head on your shoulders.”

It wasn’t working. Of course it wasn’t. He already knew everything she was saying, it was just a dumb hope. Shit. She gave him a weak , apologetic smile, “Right… well… can’t say I don’t care.”

Tabby squeezed his shoulders and separated the Beast from Thomas’s mind by surrounding it entirely with her psychic presence. Sure, Beast was akin to an intelligent animal mentally, but it was still ridiculously strong. She didn’t want to knock Thomas out though, for his and his kid’s sake. Tabby wobbled on her feet and let out a soft whine. She let herself slump to the ground and held her head with a hand, grimacing, “Fuck… this sucks more than I thought it would. F-feel free to be angry as much as you like for once.” She could feel her head pulsing with pain, and so she just sat with her eyes closed, hoping her nose wasn’t bleeding.

“Don’t hold your emotions back. I’m sure as hell not doing this often,” Tabby mumbled, “I’m sorry, Thomas. I’m on your side though. We’ll find a way to get to your wife. It’ll be alright. We’ll find where she is. I can search for information on the address it came from as well as the address it mentioned. Once my head doesn’t feel… ugh… Hah. If there was ever a time I wished my cynic view wasn’t right, it’s now. I hope Juliet’s okay, though… I never knew her, obviously. She’s not… I mean… she’s not the type that would hurt herself if she’s that depressed, would she…?”

Poor Tabby was having a very, very small sample of what Natalie dealt with daily. Being mentally throttled by a monstrous entity. She was decidedly not a fan. Internally, her mind was turned into a hellscape with a very, very angry beast at the forefront of it. She gave a weak smile to the huge being, "Hey bud... sorry about earlier... and about this now... Do you care about Juliet and Selene like Thomas does? I've always kind of wondered if you're capable of that kind of thing... but it's not like we ever have a chance to chat. This is a strange opportunity. I promise I'll bring you meat next time you're out... next time you're out that's planned, anyway. I'll even try to bring you a death row inmate to play with or something as an apology if I can, bud."

"I really need to get out now, my Synth-Lungs won't last long." He spoke, hearing the faint voice of...what was that hero's name? Axiom, Augmented Superhero. The police database was the best thing to read, especially when you were standing inside a building, and need a guy's name.
"Im coming! Just need to check my- Oh." His bionic eyes were detecting trace amounts of...something. It was definitely something. "Yeah, uh, scratch that! I need to check something." He mumbled, approaching the blood-like path. He took a finger and dipped it in the strange ooze, taking a scent scan.
It was definitely not natural in origin, not was it manmade---or at least it didn't appear to be.
He quickly shook it off, and made his way for the exit. Bolting past beams and falling doors at over a speed of 30 mph. He made one last final stride, which tossed him out the building and into a dumpster.
"Oh---OW! Shit. Should've not done that." He mumbled, stumbling to his feet. He then saw Axiom carrying some really messed-up guy, whom was leaking the same stuff he just scanned.
"I guess this is then. Heard you guys wanted me for civil violence? Here I am, Marcus Nexus." He spoke to them, approaching at a steady pace.

Cosmic Arbiter

Olivine folded her hands behind her back slowly, quirking an eyebrow towards Oracle. "Quite rude, asking a woman something like that. But if you must know, I am a century old, I should think I look quite good for my age, no? However, that particular skill is not related in the slightest to my age." The Cosmic Arbiter slowly floated forward until she was face to face with Oracle again, slowly reaching out and resting a hand on her shoulder. "I can understand your frustration, but I assure you this is not to belittle you. But I do not know where to properly start our training sessions if I do not know the upper and lower limits of yourself. This is not to stroke my ego. Your skillset is varied, and your basic spells still have a considerable punch. This is good."

Olivine floated around until she hovered near Oracle's shoulder, fingers trailing down her arm as she moved so she could give her upper arm a small squeeze before releasing her. "I should think this is a good basis that I can focus our training on from here on out. May I treat you to a meal as compensation for putting you through your paces?" Olivine slowly started to float back to the rooftop before her feet landed atop it. Pressing an index finger to the base of her throat she quickly trailed it down her side and flicked it away from herself when it could travel no further, her clothes melting away to reveal her day wear beneath. Holding her hand out at her side she closed it as if she was gripping a doorknob. Slowly twisting her hand she wrenched it back, a shimmering door forming in the air that showed the hustle and bustle of the street below, though none on that level could see the door. "Shall we go, then?"

Casey Kemp

Casey shot a look out of the corner of his eye towards Ada as they weaved through traffic on the way back 'home', a frown etched on his features. "Only a disappointment if you don't try." The ride home or at least the rest of it was marked with staunch silence save for the hum of the road and cars around them. As usual, maneuvering past military patrols at the crater was painfully easy, the duo getting 'home' without much issue. Casey's attention quickly turned to his usual studying once they got home, reviewing local heroes, their skill sets, fighting styles, everything, eyes glued to a collection of large monitors. As Ada got ready to leave Casey glanced over his shoulder as he heard her voice, giving a small nod. "Love you too. If anything's wrong, call for me. I'll be there for you, always." As his daughter left he returned to the screens he was reviewing, mind working to memorize fighting styles and the movements everyone was so ingrained into.

Natalie Brenton

A chuckle escaped Natalie at Chutes reaction to what she'd done, straightening upright promptly. "You get rattled so easily. Mixture of cute and funny. Don't change, yea?" Natalie wasn't...invested in the date, per say. The agreement was to give him a practice date, she hadn't been directly asked out. And thus, she saw it just that, as giving Chutes some practice. A wink was earned at the compliment and the kiss to her hand, a soft laugh escaping her. "You flatter me, Chutes." Once again they were teleported, and once again Natalie's stomach demanded that it be out in the open air rather than on the inside, the woman forced to pause to get her bearings and not violate the rules of anatomy. "Oh this is pretty."

Natalie settled down to change into the skates she'd been given, humming softly to herself as she studied the ice before her. "Yea, I can suppose it'd be easy to fall and shatter my jaw, yea? That'd be a right pain to explain to Father Mason when I got back to the hotel, don't you think?" After sliding on the skates Natalie slowly stood upright with a slight wobble, taking Chutes hand as they moved to the ice. No sooner had she made a bit of progress was she struggling to stay upright, her feet threatening to go out from beneath her as she nearly went into a split, only to correct and then overcorrect, her free arm flailing at her side this way and that. "Shite," she mumbled as she tried to stay upright, brows knitted in focus.

Adam Marshall

Adam took up the rear of the group as they made their way inside, hands in his pockets. A soft chuckle escaped him at Sylvia's reaction, their daughter not having a chance to make any progress into the house on her own two feet before Sylvia snatched her up and pinched her cheeks. As his wife reprimanded Misty and Dunnie in equal measure he stood by the front door, closing and locking it up behind him, letting his wife take the reigns on this. He didn't need to interrupt her or piggyback off the conversation when she was taking point, he could wait. At the question in regards to Muse, Adam gave a small and calm shrug. "Mhm. From my understanding, at least, I couldn't really tell unless someone told me as you'd guess. She's going to stick around for a late lunch. I'll help you get something heated up. You and I have to talk later, work stuff. A whole lot to unpack." Looking over to M&M he gave her a slow nod, speaking calmly but sternly. "Don't run off again, young ma'am, alright? Your mom and I had to do a lot of practice before we could do our jobs, and we had to wait a long time to get where we are now. Don't be in a rush to grow up, hun. No more running off though, okay?"

James and Sato

As Vice, Thyris, and even Asano spoke to her, Sato's isolated thunderstorm overhead seemed to quell ever so slowly, the thunder becoming more sparse as the lightning ceased altogether, the heavy downpour having slowed to a steady rainfall as the goddess start to fully come to grips with the danger had passed. "I will...accept the common room offer. Not...that we need such charity." A blunt lie, but it seemed like her more 'natural' personality was starting to crack through once again after today. Such indifferent words, for a woman whose tears had stained her face beneath her mask. Sato snuggled into Thyris's embrace, an arm reaching behind her to hold Asano to the best of her ability in the position she found herself in. "I am fine...everything will be fine," she whispered back to her 'daughter' in their native tongue.

James could only stare in shock, awe, confusion, and rage as Scile oh so happily searched her pockets, dropping literal artifacts out like it was no big deal. This was it. This was the reincarnation where he died from a stress-induced heart attack. He could feel it coming, it'd be inevitable. "God...bless it," he grumbled, his head throbbing with a migraine. Sato gave a weak noise of surprise as she was suddenly lifted into a princess carry, leaning into the embrace even as she gently punched a balled fist against Scile's shoulder. Not remotely painful, if even having enough force to be felt, more of a show of protest than anything. "I-I can walk, you know...I'm not an invalid..." Despite her protests, Sato made no effort to truly get out of Thyris's grip, extremely exhausted from an emotional standpoint.

As they walked into the bakery James heaved a heavy sigh, at least the bakery looked nice. Taking a towel he ensured he was dried off and tidied up, glancing at Epherial. "Just a water for me, please. I think I'm slightly dehydrated from stress." Despite his anger at literally everything, James wasn't about to lash out at someone trying to do their job as customer support. James promptly flopped into a seat, head leaning back as he stared at the ceiling, warm fluffy towel in his hands. "I need a vacation...I've been here two days and I already need a vacation. Based off my understanding, the little girl is part of said goddess's village. She's been dead for a good few millennia. Something called the O.A resurrected and effectively kidnapped her. Goddess isn't taking it well."

As Ruru worked to comfort Asano, Sato paused before translating, her voice sounding somewhat hollow by now after the day. "She is giving you a gift. It is fine to accept..." After a moment James spoke up, to no one in particular. "Vice. Or Sophia, if you're listening. Are you able to identify the nearest therapist, for obvious reasons? I'm going to try to get a 'shopping list' done later that we can review..." James rolled his head to look at Ruru, and glanced at Scile? "You're related...oh god. Your...sister decided that she'd charge in, pick a fight with my lovely green friend while we were trying to save the kid. Literally just charged in, declared she wanted to fight, and interrupted a whole lot."

Thomas Black

Thomas glanced at Dr. Böhmer as he made his way past him, Thomas practically shaking where he stood. The poor man was a wallflower, soft-spoken and gentle as could be. But any man, no matter his personality, would become nothing but angry at the revelation that his wife didn't know what the outside was like anymore...didn't even see their daughter except sparsly...to have her fall into such severe depression. The 'Beasts Corner' could be better described as a caged portion of his psyche. A metaphysical cage that held that raging monster, and the bars were bending and cracking, and the door was rattling. "My wife...what are they doing to my wife, Tabby," he croaked, anger in his voice and tears in his eyes. "I understand me...but not Juliet."

Of course he knew they needed him right now, and not Beast. They needed to think this through and plan...but that was incredibly difficult for him to do, given the circumstances. Though, to Tabby's credit, she managed to do some good to corall the portion of Thomas's psyche that they didn't want out and loose. Keeping the door shut tight, the bars from breaking, whatever it'd take. At the confirmation that for once, Thomas could feel angry and not be a risk, to be allowed to experience his emotion...he let out a slow and small sigh. "Thank you," he mumbled, still shaking where he stood. Thomas wasn't the 'get loud and shout' kind of angry. But just based off how he held himself, the way he clenched his hands at his side, the scowl on his features as he slumped against the wall and put his head in his hands. The way he took deep, frustrated breaths and grumbled empty noises into the air, a small chant of 'those fucking bastards' on his breath. "Please Tabby...whatever you can do, please help me. I can't believe them...they call me a monster!? Their justification for keeping me on a leash, fine, I'll accept that. But Juliet...why juliet!?" Thomas shook, not answering for a long while at Tabby's question, if only because he didn't want to start raging in his old teacher's office. "She's not. She wouldn't hurt herself. I know Juliet, I've known her for ages...she wouldn't, I know she wouldn't. I swear to god, if they've pushed her to that point...she swore up and down she'd never considering something like that, even at our biggest lows...If they've pushed her to that point...I won't need Beast, because I'll kill whatever shriveled heart bastard who did that to her myself."

For Tabby's conversation, it wasn't so much of a conversation to say. Beast was still rather angry with her, after all. The only response she got was a painful roar that resounded through the psyche, slamming at its cage as it did so in an effort to throttle her. After all, it was likewise feeding off of Thomas's anger, and he had plenty to spare right now.

~Dietrich~
1652125393633.png Dietrich shook his head as Morgan talked. "I saw it, but I don't know what half of that stuff means. Much less how someone can change between code and a solid form." Or was she even solid to begin with? He frowned at that thought. Neither of them had actually touched Syssel, even though she had offered her hand. Was she really flesh and bone? Dietrich sighed. No point in thinking about it now. Morgan would find out soon enough.

Speaking of which, Morgan made a good point. Even though she could do the work herself, and arguably better, if they could off-load it onto a third party it would free her up for more important tasks. It made the blond uncomfortable bringing someone new in, but that wasn't new. He was always suspicious of new partners. It was easier to deal with their acquittances once they had history and Dietrich had an idea of who was trustworthy and who wasn't. Likewise, once they spent some time working together Chronos would have enough damning evidence to bury anyone who dared to double cross them.

Shifting slightly, Dietrich turned his eyes to Morgan as she stepped out of the bathroom. It was times like these that he had to admire her. Although some may question her methods, there was no doubt that the steel in her eyes was a rigid righteousness that sought out to stamp out the corruption in this world. If he didn't know any better, he would wonder if she was a Nephilim too; a child of an angel of justice. Dietrich nodded. "The young lady may be hesitant, but I'm sure Mr. Tristan would be more than willing to convince her. After all, he's already lost her once." If Tristan truly cared about his girlfriend, the blond had no doubt that he'd do anything to either stop Kali or make her pay. Vengeance and justice are separated by a thin line after all.

Holding up the car keys he already had in his pocket, he smiled. "It'll be best if I drive. I'm sure you'll use the car ride to do some last minute preparations." He offered his elbow to Morgan, "Shall we?"

Tabby groaned softly into her palms, “Well… You are strong and hard to control. She’s… I mean she’s… not strong. Not Beast strong, I mean. So it’s a lot easier to keep a relatively normal person contained without all the fanfare you have going on. For you, you need that ‘carrot’. For her, they can just forcibly contain her if they want. That’s my guess anyway.”

“I have no idea what to do. All we can do is figure out where she is. We can look into the addresses. We can check both of them out. I can’t just go completely a-wall, though. I’m not strong enough to fight the damned government…,” Tabby complained. A thin trickle of blood ran down her lip from her nose, which she quickly rubbed away and hid from view with her hand.

“Okay. If she isn’t in danger of hurting herself then we need to trust her on that. We have a few different options moving forward. All of them are difficult. We can disappear. Snatch Juliet from wherever she is and grab Selene and just go off the grid. I’m sure there are mercenaries or other groups that could get us new identities. We can ask the doctor, he’s old, he probably knows a lot of random people. Another option is staying public but making a show of it. Getting key figures on our side. Elementa is in town. There’s that hero Jewel who used to be a villain. There’re activist groups. If they’re not going to play fair then we have no reason to. And yes. We. I’m stuck with you whether you want me or not. I guess I’ll have to try to convince Selene to call me Auntie. Hah,” she laughed and took a napkin out of one of her pockets to hold at her nose.

“Look. Thomas. I’m going to keep this up as long as I can. I know you’re pissed. Believe me. I can fucking feel it right now. Let’s gather ourselves and get your daughter tested so we can get out of here. The longer we are here the more of a mess it is. I don’t want to alarm your kid unnecessarily though. She’s young. Let’s get it done. Get the students out of the way. Then talk more with the doctor. We can look at the other letters. We can write down all the addresses mentioned and the dates. But first. Just… while I can still keep this up, let’s finish the kid thing. At least that way the risk level goes down,” Tabby forced herself to stand back up and shuffle over to Thomas, “C’mon. You can do this. I’m here, your little badgering angel on your shoulder.”

Asano
“Megami Satō! Otoko wa totemo hayaku ugoku! Kare wa sharin de hashirimasu. Okashīdesu ne!” (Goddess Sato! The man moves so fast! He runs on wheels. How strange!) Asano remarked, eyes wide as everything happened so quickly. She accepted the blanket and doll and the tea… the tea. Asano very slightly pouted.

The girl stood and waddled with the blanket wrapped around her up to Shard, “Kon'nichiwa. Arigatōgozaimasuga, ocha wa amari sukide wa arimasen. Amai mono wa arimasu ka?” (Hello sir. Thank you, but I don't like tea very much. Do you have something sweet?) She offered him back the tea and bowed at him, “Yoroshikuonegaishimasu. Go shinsetsu ni arigatōgozaimashita.” Thank you for having us. Thank you for your kindness.

Meanwhile Vice responded in James’s mind, “Yup still here. I think I know somebody. I’ll contact her. Usually it isn’t instant to get in though. I’ll see what I can do. Maybe we’ll get lucky.”

Misty puffed her cheeks and looked away, embarrassed, “Okay… I’m sorry… I wanna be a detective like you guys… I just wanna be a cool detective… I wanna be cool…”

“Oh honey, you are very cool as is. Don’t be rushing. Your wonderful as you are,” Sylvia sighed, petting her, “Gosh, what are we going to do with you? You are far too curious for your own good.”

“I am noooot! You guys are embarrassing me!”

That netted her another light cheek pinch before Sylvia released her with a huff, “I suppose we do have a guest here, after all. We’ll talk more about this later. You’re still not having any electronics tonight though.”

“Ugh… ok.”

“I swear she’s going to be such a handful as a teenager…,” Sylvia laughed, cupping her own cheek as she watched Misty drag Dunnie off to her room. She continued her walk to the kitchen and started the oven to reheat food, “Adam, love, I’d like you to call Nyar. I want to have a few words with him. I am almost certain this is his fault. Somehow. It’s always his fault.”

“Nyar…?” Muse mumbled, so very awkward feeling like a severe third wheel.

“Oh. Nyarlathotep. Our resident pain in the ass,” Sylvia explained, “Eldritch god. Outer god. Whatever. Man of many faces. Many names. Sometimes a babysitter when we can’t find anyone else since Misty is such a handful…. Oh! Actually if you’re able to handle some level of the kind of things Adam works with, maybe you’d be a decent babysitter. We pay well.”

Muse blushed and waved her hands wildly, “Oh! No no. I couldn’t! I mean. I don’t, I’m not… I’m not really a great babysitter. My grandma would love it though! She loves kids and is way better with eldritch stuff than I am - she even dated one before!”

Sylvia squinted at her for that comment, mouth slightly agape, but she shook her head, “I’m not gonna question it. I’d ask my mom and dad to babysit but they’re always busy… and dad’s… ehhh… I’d love to take you up on that offer. We’ll have to set up a meeting to meet your grandmother. So then, Muse.”

“Abigail! Please. Muse is just my hero name but Abigail is totally fine. Especially for you and Adam,” she interjected.

“Abigail, then. Are you a fan of umami flavors? I have a tasty ramen. I personally prefer it spicy but Misty’s a little more sensitive to spice so I make two pots,” and as she said that, she indeed had two pots at the ready that she put leftovers into to reheat, “One spicy as hell because that’s how I like it. One mild. Both umami. We aren’t afraid of MSG in this household.”

“…I um… I like spicy…,” Abigail said, fidgeting. She looked to Adam, “Sir, your wife is really adorable…” She blushed more, “Sorry! Sorry. I’m just so thrown off. Everything is happening so suddenly and now I’m having a late lunch with people I hardly know yet. Heh.” Abigail rubbed the back of her head, “Thank you, though. I appreciate.”

Sylvia laughed again, “Oh, I’m sure he agrees with you. He thinks I’m completely adorable and cute. Don’t worry too much, Abigail. It’s okay, you’re new, but you’re lucky to be in Adam’s corner. He’s a great detective. I can tell you’re shy. His unique brand of coolheadedness will be a great match for that. I’m sorry you got roped into this kid… mess. Kids are a handful. So what’s your grandmother like? And what do you do, yourself?”

“I, um, well… I’m a hero in training. My voice is my weapon, I guess. I can make people feel what I want, calm them, distract them… or… um… worse, but I don’t go down that route. I also love to sing. You’re right though, I’m so shy, so despite how nice my voice might be and how magical the effect might be, I am terrified of publicity. Being a hero in training forces me to face that. I’m training with two other people as well. A boy, a mage, to try to work on my magic. And then I’m also a HiT for Kali,” Abigail continued.

Sylvia scrunched her nose, “Oh boy. Yeah. You better keep this poor innocent soul, Adam. She’s too good for someone like Kali. She needs your guidance to balance out Kali’s. Still. You like to sing? What can you sing?”

“I can sing just about anything. It’s really relaxing… er… or well… usually it’s really relaxing. I have to be more careful about the effects it can have on the people around me,” she was thinking, still very clear in her mind, about Kali’s hand with a knife through it. Abigail cleared her throat and shuffled, sitting down at a stool at the kitchen island.

“Alright. Well. What about your grandma?”

“Oh she’s wonderful. She’s the kind of person everyone likes and gets along with. She always has a new and interesting story. She took me in since my mom didn’t want anything to do with me. She’s a total sweetheart. She has the same power as me but she’s always got something up her sleeve. She doesn’t even look old!”

“Adam love could you pour us all some drinks?” Sylvia said, “Your grandmother sounds interesting. It makes me wonder if she’s got elven blood in her. It reminds me of my own father. Go grab five bowls please, Abigail. Second cabinet on the left.”

“Yes ma’am!”

Chutes
Chutes grinned evilly at Natalie’s struggles, giggling as she flailed. He brought her closer to him, gently resting his free hand against her waist, “If you think too hard about trying to balance it makes it harder to actually balance.” The ice rink was so quiet that the blades scraping softly against the surface was loud. “If you’d prefer I can move us to a location with the public, but I wanted to at least start off in private.”

“What do you like to do in your free time, Nat? When you’re not being a fancy hero?” He asked, smiling, “I’m a book collector, unsurprisingly. Little pockets of knowledge, those things. I’ve had a library for over a hundred years, now. I spend a lot of time on my own, aside from when people pop by. It’s fun, sometimes, having other people appreciate your collection. Books without readers just collect dust.”

Ruru blinked then looked at scile, "its...A thing with her, shes a warrior at heart ya know. She means well usually." She said with a small smile. Shard looked down at the small child, and sighed giving a small glance to ruru then crouching down, he took the tea and set it aside. "お茶は結構苦いですからね、わかります。これはホットチョコレートで、かなり甘いです。でも熱いので息を吹きかけてください。"(Tea is quite bitter, I know. This is hot chocolate, and it is quite sweet. But it's hot, so blow on it.) He gave her a mug of hot chocolate then had her sit next to ruru, and stood up. He had generally assessed the situation, another revival most likely. Calmly walking to the crying goddess He reached out his hand, and slapped her across the face, a sharp loud sound silencing the entire room. Shards eyes merely stayed focus on the goddess even as the spear of water pierced through his chest. "How many died? You remember every name don't you, every face." He spoke in english to keep the child from understanding. "How many years has it eaten you inside, the guilt of your failure. The pain of not being able to protect them. You may cry. Shed tears until your eyes bleed. Scream until you choke on your own sobs. Years may pass. But you will never forget them. Never forget the agony in your chest from their disappearance. But you do not have time to wallow. They have left behind their last gift. By whatever means she was brought to you. She is everything they stood for. Theirs hopes. Their memories. Their future. Treasure her, give her the life that was taken from the rest. And let her enjoy the beauties of the world." he said to her before pulling the spear out of his chest and dropping it on the ground turning around and walking off, glancing at ruru as he walked past her. "It is the least we......you can do to honor their memories. Your a goddess, to need sense talked into you by a demon. Pathetic" He spoke before vanishing into the back room. Ruru looking super awkward as she kept her head down

Ada and Sean
Getting out of the crater wasn’t too difficult. Someone gave her a hint of trouble, but it was easy to deflect. There was even an app she had on her phone that was “BtH”, Bring them Home. Something for an excuse, an app for hunting for bones in the crater. It was a map that showed all the different locations remains had been found and how to call it in if you found remains and whatnot. A simple explanation to the concerned police officer and it was no big deal.

She wandered after that. Ada wanted to stab something, but was too exhausted to want to exercise more. She hurt so much. Her fingers ran across one of her new scars, feeling the bumps of the stitches under her shirt. It wasn’t Sean’s fault. If it was, she’d feel better about everything. It would be easier. Her dad said it was only a disappointment if she didn’t try? Since when did he try? He never tried with any women. So hypocritical. She kicked a rock in frustration, the pebble skidding out with sparks to god knows where thanks to the speed with which she did so.

Ada ended up back at the library. She didn’t really mean to, but she wandered back that way without thinking of it. She had been enjoying the library the past few weeks. It was calming. But now she grimaced at the doors, realizing she had come here despite not wanting to. Stupid subconscious. Stupid dad. Stupid Sean.

“Sean!” she squealed, nearly jumping out of her skin as the boy opened the door, leaving the library. He looked just as startled as she was, with his guards behind him.

He glanced back at them, then to her again, shoulders dropping, “Ada… hi. Um.”

“You two have an argument?” one of the guards asked, chuckling as they moved past him out of the library, “Don’t be shy, Sean! I know you just saw her before but you can hang out with your friend. Don’t mind us.”

Sean frowned, “Yeah… um. I was just leaving… Can I talk to you though? Just… ah… really quick.”

“Y-yeah! Of course,” Ada’s hands flapped, side-stepping in a short blur to walk beside Sean, “It’s fine. We can talk. Um…” She looked to the guards.

Sean looked uncomfortable, “Guys can you hang back a little bit so we can talk privately?”

“Of course,” Keeler said, the others nodding and backing off.

Sean’s voice was hushed, “Why’re you over here?”

“I could ask you the same thing. I just ended up here. I was upset. Couldn’t sit still at home. Are you okay?”

“I’m fine. I couldn’t sit still either. Not… after all that… I’m fine. Shaken, upset too, everything. But yeah,” he shrugged, “I couldn’t sit still. I um… I looked into some… some stuff. About your dad.”

Ada gave him a side glare, “I knew you would. You said you weren’t going to use that power on us.”

“That was before what happened. That was something agreed with with your dad. Not… a mercenary. That’s different. It’s a different thing.”

“He’s the same person he was before. As am I. Just because you didn’t know something doesn’t change who we are,” Ada snapped, speaking in an angry whisper, “What do you want to talk about anyway? Couldn’t you just have texted or called or something?”

“I didn’t want to risk it. I just… ugh… look. Whatever. Be pissed at me. I needed to know what I was getting into. I’m not looking to die anytime soon. I need to have some sense of what’s going on - and your father’s a monster by the way - but I didn’t look into private stuff like conversations or whatever. I’m not interested in private stuff. I just wanted to know what I had to look forward to for training and stuff and to try to get a sense of how… not to get killed,” Sean swallowed, nervous at the thought, “I wanted to ask you some stuff.”

Ada folded her arms and shrugged, “Fine fine. I guess I get why. I’d probably do it too. Dad’s gonna be pissed though.”

“Yeah… I um… I wanted to say sorry for snapping at you. I didn’t… kinda… think about how tough your life might have been and your situation. How you got to this point.”

She scrunched her nose, “My life is just fine. I don’t think it’s tough. It’s life.”

“Well yeah I guess you wouldn’t really know anything different. Still I mean, your birth parents getting killed like that… how your dad trains you… the… the torture you just went through… everything…,” Sean mumbled, clearly still haunted by the events that transpired, and for good reason, Ada had to remind herself.

“Wait, my dad’s my dad, Sean,” Ada corrected.

Sean looked like he had just stumbled onto a landmine, “I… um… o-oh… so uh… like I said I didn’t look at any conversations or anything… but… j-just the events to get a broad idea of your father’s methods… and um… that… you… oh boy. This is not how I wanted this to go. H-he hasn’t told you?”

Ada fell silent. Her lips contorted into an incredulous smirk, brow furrowing, like she couldn’t decide on an emotion. She cleared her throat, and spoke up, “Right. I think I need to leave. I’ll answer your questions later, Sean…”

“Ah… yeah… yep… yeah that’s fair. That’s understandable. I’m sorry. I didn’t know.”

“Not… I know. I know you didn’t know. I… I didn’t know… so just… I’m going to go now,” Ada said, a smile slipping onto her face like a mask, “Make sure to tell your mom I said hi. Sorry I didn’t catch you at a better time! Mr. Keeler? We’re okay. Don’t worry so much. Arguments are normal. Message me later Sean, yeah?”

“…yeah.”

Ada left. The whole conversation took less than five minutes. She felt… hollow. She felt cold and angry, like a freezing breeze rushed across her bones. Yes, she had considered the thought before that he wasn’t blood related, but she just… figured she looked more like her mother. That happened a lot with kids. It wasn’t that weird. It- Good god she was upset. This was dumb. This was so dumb! He was still her dad either way.

And so she returned home much sooner than she would have otherwise. Much sooner than her dad would’ve been expecting. It was only a walk, and a short one at that. The library was close by and she hadn’t even gotten to go in the damn thing.

Ada let the door slam shut and said nothing. She took out her little pocket knife and with a twitch, flicked it in quiet rage at her dad. Not directly at him, she didn’t want to hurt him, but into the wall near the monitor. She still said nothing and went back to her room, falling face first onto her bed.
