Eiru Eagna
Gold Rank Support

Eiru paused for a brief second, moving a finger to her temple as she recalled Leon's actions and how exactly she ended up in this situation in the first place. In fact, Eiru had all but forgotten the whole babysitting ordeal and his idiotic display at the port a few mornings prior. Moving her finger from her temple instead of toward Leo she wagged it bag and forth with a grin "tsk tsk tsk, kids these days, always so keen to go out and get themselves killed. Is this what they call the emo phase? Listen Leo, mommy and daddy still love you no matter what crazy fad you get absorbed into, isn't that right Ymir. Wait... what exactly are the gender roles here... nevermind forget I asked I'm not calling you daddy Ymir. Not enough gold in the world could make me do anything of the sort!." Shaking her head back and forth at mere imagination Eiru hopped from her hammock to the hardwood floor and proceeded to strike a confident pose with her hands on her hips and a twinkle in her eye. "But seeing as you just reminded me of the fact you messed up my brilliant plan and left me no choice but to take this quest in the first place! Not to mention you tied up Ymir and dragged her onto this ship like a complete perverted psychopath! Well. I don't really see you have a choice in the matter! Also on that note, please avoid sleeping near myself, Ymir and Nanalee in the future."

Turning her attention to Ymir, stifling a chuckle as she did so Eiru spoke again "Unless of course Ymir... nevermind! We have more important things to discuss than you two being as dense as bricks around one another. The relic!"

Turning on her heels Eiru moved one hand quickly from her hip to point at Hanzel "Hazel... Bazel...Dazzle? OH! Hanzel! This quest is no longer under the jurisdiction of the adventurers guild! From this point forward, I Eiru Eagna will be taking the quest on for personal reasons. That means you and your crew are free to renegotiate the price of your hire. Gold will be no issue and of that, I can assure you. Name your price! This relic must be recovered no matter the cost to my Natio... me!" Moving that same hand to her chin Eiru looked the man up and down before adding "And, if you're willing I believe having you personally tag along would be most beneficial. You will be aptly rewarded. Ruvo, Natalee you too! What do you say~?"

"Well I certainly wasn't planning on kicking the bucket before any of my impersonators and I don't think you could stand dying out at sea so you better not bite the dust just yet either."

"That would be the worst," she agreed, privately wondering if a better phrase wouldn't be to 'choke on salt'. There seemed to be a great deal more of it than dust.

"Yo Nalee," He paused. "Not my best nickname, I figured since I gave the other guy a nickname I would give you one as... You know what, never mind."

Nalee... gnarly. Ymir covered her mouth, snickering under her breath and wandering over to elbow his side after she'd finished dying in the corner. "You seem to call a lot of people by the second half of their name. Some custom I'm not familiar with?" Shame her name was too short to add to the trend. "Even if it is I'm not calling you 'Nadis though."

"Tsk tsk tsk, kids these days." Ymir glanced over as Eiru started talking again. The witch had regained some of her usual colour—though it wasn't the only aspect of her personality to return. "Is this what they call the emo phase? Listen Leo, mommy and daddy still love you no matter what crazy fad you get absorbed into, isn't that right Ymir."

Ymir blinked, glancing askew at Leo for a beat before offering an uncertain grin. "Uh, I haven't actually met his parents or anything. So it's not like I'd know..."

"Wait... what exactly are the gender roles here?" Eiru muttered, continuing as if she hadn't heard a thing. It was starting to concern Ymir actually—she stepped forward, wondering if they hadn't fallen off their bed or knocked their head, intending to check even if it meant rattling them awake. "Nevermind," Eiru said, brightening all of a sudden. "Forget I asked. I'm not calling you daddy Ymir."

...huh?

Ymir froze, hands halfway raised as if to grab Eiru's cheeks. Instead her thoughts missed a step and fell flat on their face, unable to comprehend the order of the words. Eiru said some weird things sometimes but—

"Not enough gold in the world could make me do anything of the sort!"

She... no. Ymir had nothing. She'd been knocked sideways into some oblique realm, maybe where the common tongue was spoken backwards. A distant part of her wondered if she were suffering some sort of mind magic attack, or if she'd fallen off her glider earlier and was only now encountering the effects. She zoned out completely, at least for a second or two, before reality kicked in and Eiru's words began make sense again - though she found she wasn't such a fan of what was going on.

"-tied up Ymir and dragged her onto this ship like a complete perverted psychopath!"

Perverted?
Ymir frowned, not liking the situation she returned to. Eiru stood with her hands on her hips, speaking in that tone she used whenever she was determined to get her own way—no matter who or what she had to go through. "Well. I don't really see you have a choice in the matter! Also on that note, please avoid sleeping near myself, Ymir and Nanalee in the future."

A few things finally clicked. Ymir's hands lowered as she glanced around the room—eyes flashing as she checked for those out of her field of vision—Nanalee had indeed returned, standing behind Hanzel near the entrance to the cabins, though most the other sailors had returned to work. Ashitaka and Ruvo were staying out of the way of the conflict it seemed, though Leo was stuck in the middle of it all.

"Unless of course Ymir..." Ymir glanced down at the sound of her name, returning a blank stare as Eiru's implicit words sidled away to nothing. "Nevermind! We have more important things to discuss than you two being as dense as bricks around one another. The relic!"

Ymir's lip curled back, the hair along the back of her neck prickling as Eiru swept onto her conversation with the quartermaster—"Hazel... Bazel...Dazzle? OH! Hanzel-!" —and remained utterly oblivious to the implications she left behind.

A perverted psychopath. She glanced over her shoulder at Nanalee, who'd also been spoken for, ignoring the wings and talons and trying to read their expression instead. Eiru continued talking and gesturing, though Hanzel managed a few words edgewise in between it all. Ymir stood very still for the most of it, turning over the unpleasant feeling she had in her head.

"And, if you're willing I believe having you personally tag along would be most beneficial. You will be aptly rewarded. Ruvo, Natalee you too! What do you say~?"

Enough
. Ymir scowled, reaching forward to grab at the witch.

"While we're talking about people being dense," she said, making full use of her height to glare. "You should be careful of what stones you throw. Leo isn't the one who knocked me out, stole my property, and used it to blackmail me into coming along. Nor is he either of what you describe him as." He definitely wasn't the one the witch would need to watch out for at night—Ymir was very much regretting her choice not to draw devil horns on their head while she had the chance. "I'm here to map out the islands. If find anything I'll let you know, otherwise you can find your relic with whoever else you haven't managed to insult since waking up."

Ymir stepped away, pausing a moment before she turned and passed Hanzel and Nanalee on her way out to the deck. The sun and salt of midday were glaring, the details of a looming island visible in the distance, but it did little to clear the storm clouds in her head. Eiru was a friend, but goddammit if she didn't sometimes... push it too far. Not everyone had a reputation that could be cleared with a few words to the upper echelons of their house.

Ymir sighed, setting her head against the railing as she waited for them to finish up. She'd probably end up going with them in the end, she suspected. If only to make sure they all made it out okay.

"Anything of note happen there in the past few years? My information is a bit... well... out of date, you could say."

Hanzel shook his head. "Same rumours, different season. If people aren't after the treasure then they're after the guardians of it, and then all that's left is the debris floating on the surface for other sailors to find."

"Hazel... Bazel...Dazzle? OH! Hanzel-!" The quartermaster crossed his arms, raising a brow. His expectations that what followed would be entertaining weren't disappointed. "This quest is no longer under the jurisdiction of the adventurers guild! From this point forward, I Eiru Eagna will be taking the quest on for personal reasons."

"Will you now?" Hanzel said, raising a brow. "And we should honour that because...?"

"That means you and your crew are free to renegotiate the price of your hire. Gold will be no issue and of that, I can assure you. Name your price! This relic must be recovered no matter the cost to my Natio... me!" The witch set her hand on her chin and gave him the sort of once-over he wasn't unfamiliar with—though he was far from foolish enough to think they had anything apart from calculating intentions. "And, if you're willing, I believe having you personally tag along would be most beneficial. You will be aptly rewarded."

He barked out a laugh, watching her turn to the others in the room and give them the same, expectant stare. "Ruvo, Natalee you too! What do you say~?"

It was hard to predict what either of their reactions would be, given they weren't part of his regular crew. Either way it wasn't his decision to make. There were ways he knew of getting to the shores of Siren's Watch, but that wasn't the real danger of it. "The price isn't an issue," he said, nodding towards the others. "We will dock, but I don't intend to send anyone who isn't willing to go along. Delivering you to and from there far as I or any of the regular crew go." He wasn't about to risk the vessel by mooring there for any length of time - not while knowing what awaited them in the shallows. "The place is also known as the Sailor's Grave, so beware of what awaits. You adventurers might have the stomach for it, but the rest of us are just looking to get back home alive."

Nanalee Imphon | Of Spiritual Snow
A curious explorer with a love for battle, adventure and power.

Nanalee smiled brightly back at her previous sparring partner with a small wave of her feathers, glad to see that everyone seemed to be doing relatively fine, and that the witch had finally woken up. "Yo Nalee, not my best nickname, I figured since I gave the other guy a nickname I would give you one as... You know what, never mind." She didn't quite understand why Ymir had descended into such a laughing fit from his words, and cocked her head to the side before choosing to just ignore it. Humans had a very different culture to her own after all. "What you been up to? You missed out yesterday evening. Though I can't say I remember all too clearly what exactly you missed out on beyond some extraordinary music performances from Ruvo and I." "Heh, I joined a fighting tournament! But, it sounds like you guys are discussing something important so I can tell you about it another time." She responded quietly to avoid disrupting the words of the others.

As Eiru continued to chatter on, Nanalee quickly sidled over to stand beside Hanzel rather than behind him now that most of the crew members had returned to their duties. Noticing a new face that she couldn't see earlier, she blinked at him curiously, her harpy eyes darting from his eyepatch to his sword before giving him a small smile as greeting and turning away. As she turned however, her eyes locked onto the white-haired human, Ymir, instead. At first, she was looking at her because she appeared as if she was in a daze, but later it was because her expression kept worsening. Faintly feeling as if another fight was about to start, when her eyes locked with the human female she was keeping her eye on, she was somewhat surprised. Nanalee had only been half-listening to Eiru at this point, since she didn't exactly have a very long attention span, so when Ymir grabbed the witch she wasn't too clear on the reason why.

"While we're talking about people being dense. You should be careful of what stones you throw. Leo isn't the one who knocked me out, stole my property, and used it to blackmail me into coming along. Nor is he either of what you describe him as. I'm here to map out the islands. If find anything I'll let you know, otherwise you can find your relic with whoever else you haven't managed to insult since waking up."

Nanalee was a simple-minded person. So when it vaguely became clear to her that Ymir seemed to be defending Leo, she instinctively took their side. He was the adventurer she liked the most so far after all, since he had been the friendliest and even sparred with her. Completely forgetting about Eiru's question directed towards her, she instinctively chose to follow after Ymir towards the top of the deck. Perhaps now wasn't the best time to talk to someone who just exploded, but, she felt that it was the right thing to do.

"Ymir?" Nanalee greeted light-heartedly, popping into Ymir's peripheral vision with a smile. "How are you feeling? Seasick?" She inquired with her usual, naturally high-pitched tone, stretching her wings a little though they still ached. "I can get your meds for you if you'd like?" She pondered a little with her eyes lowered before speaking some more, whether Ymir wanted her there or not.

After silently staring into the warm, idyllic sky for a few moments, she continued. "When I need to refresh my mind a bit, I like to go for a fly around the area. How about we go for one together? Your, um, flying stick is very cool." Her smile brightened abruptly, as she impulsively jumped and leapt off the railing into the air. As the wind caught her, she winced slightly, having already forgotten that one abrupt night of rest wasn't enough to heal her from the three combat scenarios she faced yesterday. Still, her smile remained as cheerful and carefree as ever as she flapped her wings to remain in place in the air.

"It will probably help you get away from your seasickness too. So? How about it?" She grinned, enthusiastically waving a talon at her.

Ashitaka IV

It was a lot of new information to take in. With nothing to say, he simply listened, and with new insight, learned exactly what he had signed up for. The posting was so vague that he had honestly thought it was just an expedition into some isles, but that was clearly not the case. The witch kept mentioning a relic. What relic? More importantly, what wasn't he being told? And where the hell were they going exactly? And who the hell is Nanalee?

Fortunately for Ashitaka, that last question answered itself, as if in response to his thoughts. She wasn't human, that much he knew, and definitely drew some fascinations - he had only ever seen someone with completely white hair twice before, and both were elders from his village. She gave him a quick nod and a smile, to which he returned the subtle greeting, before catching her eyes on his sword. After raising his eyebrows in acknowledgement, she turned away to speak with her comrades. Fair enough. Wordless conversation was commonplace where he was from.

"While we're talking about people being dense, You should be careful of what stones you throw. Leo isn't the one who knocked me out, stole my property, and used it to blackmail me into coming along. Nor is he either of what you describe him as." Well, that was certainly sharp. From what he could tell, this witch was turning out to be incredibly impulsive. Normally he had no issue with following someone blindly into an unknown land - after all, that's how he found Lantana - but he made a mental note to keep his distance. Out of everyone onboard, Ashitaka was probably the most ill-prepared for this trip, a fact only exacerbated by his poor magic skills. Still, she was clearly the boss of this operation - even going so far as to say it out loud - and it clearly meant a lot to her. He silently held onto the hope that she wasn't leading them into a trap.

"We will dock, but I don't intend to send anyone who isn't willing to go along. Delivering you to and from there far as I or any of the regular crew go." The captain wasn't coming? That was almost a relief. He could do with a little less barking. Having heard enough, Ashitaka had silently decided to stick around and follow the team ashore - for better or for worse, he needed that money, if there was even any to be had. Besides, "grave of sailors" is just an old mariners tale, and those stories never held any water in the past. At least so he hoped.

Transition: Cabins --> Deck
He needed to escape the claustrophobia of the crew cabins for a minute. Ashitaka made his way to the deck, leaning against the railing to get some fresh air. He spotted Ymir a short distance away, obviously with something on her mind. Shortly after, the white-haired harpy from before appeared, and after some exchange of words that he couldn't discern, she started flapping her wings and flying! He had heard stories, but it was another matter entirely to see it happening in front of him. Returning to his own little bubble, Ashitaka drew his blade and inspected the edge, his gauntlets keeping his fingers safe - not that there was much to protect him from, the edge was fairly chipped and dull. Sure, it was a hand-me-down, but he had at least expected a functional weapon from his aunt's package. Without a whetstone, he resorted to plan B.

Removing a single coin from his pocket, he inspected the glean of the metal - it looked like steel, or at the very least iron. Not enough to fix the core damage, but enough to make the blade cut for a day or two. It would have to do. He rested the coin against the blade, and closed his eyes. Concentrate, you've practiced this before. With what little mana he did have, the coin slowly merged with the steel, as if being swallowed. Red ribbons of light, though dim, wrapped around the rest of the weapon for a moment, and when he opened his eyes the edge had dramatically improved. No more chips and rolls, although the crack near the tip hadn't been fixed. With a satisfied smile, he sheathed his weapon, and returned his gaze to the water.

After checking his peripherals, he took a moment to relieve his socket of the eyepatch, the cool air immediately soothing the soreness. Wearing a tightly-bound piece of leather for long stretches of time is inevitably going to make the spot sore, so he made a habit of "airing out" whenever he could, if only for a moment. It was relaxing. Refreshed and recentered, he bound his eye socket once more, turning his attention to the distant island.

It would probably be the only relaxation he would get for the next little while. Absorbed in his own head, It didn't really matter what was on that island, or what the witch's agenda was. The job was to attend the expedition, and that was what he would do. That was final. After all, it was too late to head back, and he was too tenacious to abandon ship now. At the end of the day, should things go awry, he would simply do what he did best:

Survive.

"Heh, I joined a fighting tournament! But, it sounds like you guys are discussing something important so I can tell you about it another time." Leonidas smiled. "Sure sounds good, do tell me though, you did win right?"

"You seem to call a lot of people by the second half of their name. Some custom I'm not familiar with? Even if it is I'm not calling you 'Nadis though." He grinned and waved his hands dismissively. "No no you misunderstand. I didn't just take the second half of her name, I simply took out the second Na." He paused for a beat. "I would hope you don't, Leo is fine."

"tsk tsk tsk, kids these days, always so keen to go out and get themselves killed. Is this what they call the emo phase? Listen Leo, mommy and daddy still love you no matter what crazy fad you get absorbed into, isn't that right Ymir." Leonidas froze up, his grin quickly vanishing. "Uh, I haven't actually met his parents or anything. So it's not like I'd know..." Ymir's uncertain statement dragged him back to reality, he gave a dry, hollow chuckle. "Yea... yea you'd think they would, huh. Too bad that couldn't be further from the truth." He offered through gritted teeth.

Eiru didn't stop talking but Leonidas didn't pay much attention, vaguely registering that the one currently being addressed was Ymir rather than him anyway. Instead, he fiddled with the hilt of Ocean's Lullaby a habit that he now realized didn't bring any of the comfort that it used to with his old sword.
He vaguely registered Eiru jumping from her hammock and directing her speech back to him.

On any other day, Leonidas would have probably simply laughed and joked along but Eiru's less than fortunate wording at the start of her grand speech still had him in a particularly foul mood. "Oh don't even pretend for a second that I'm the reason you were forced to take this quest, we all know that you do whatever the hell you want anyway regardless of what the authorities think. I have choice enough, what are you going to do if I decline? Tie me up and drag me along? Oh wait, that's right, you need others to do that for you." He bit out.

Eiru simply continued. "Unless of course Ymir... nevermind! We have more important things to discuss than you two being as dense as bricks around one another. The relic!" Leonidas zoned out again, contemplating if he should cast magic on himself to calm down a little.

"While we're talking about people being dense. You should be careful of what stones you throw. Leo isn't the one who knocked me out, stole my property, and used it to blackmail me into coming along. Nor is he either of what you describe him as. I'm here to map out the islands. If find anything I'll let you know, otherwise you can find your relic with whoever else you haven't managed to insult since waking up." In the end, casting magic wasn't necessary, Ymir's sudden outburst and the anger she let out strangely took his own anger right with it.

He watched Ymir stomp out of the cabin, he considered going after her but Nanalee already seemed to have something similar in mind so he decided against it, turning back to Eiru who was still talking to Hanzel instead. "The place is also known as the Sailor's Grave, so beware of what awaits. You adventurers might have the stomach for it, but the rest of us are just looking to get back home alive."

Leonidas stared down at Eiru. "I believe you said something about gold not being an issue? Well, that's good because I've changed my mind. If you want me to come along you're going to pay me, in advance." He briefly paused, rubbing his right ring finger. "And I expect to be paid as Leonard Hower, not Leonidas Hood. Not just enough for a few rounds of drinks in a bar, enough to buy me a new ship should I decide this whole pirate hunting thing is a waste of time keeping me from seeing my sister."

She didn't know why she thought coming into deck would help. The wind was a welcome relief, but the watery deathbed of unknown stretched before her took her mind to all sorts of unpleasant places as she focused on the distant landmass.

"Ymir?" A light voice piped up nearby and Ymir glimpsed Nanalee's white feathers and worried eyes. They hung back, as if unsure how to approach. "How are you feeling? Seasick? I can get your meds for you if you'd like?"

She huffed, taking her head off the railing to rest on her hand instead. "It's fine, I took them earlier. Pretty sure they're starting to kick in."

She returned to staring out over the ocean, all glittering and wide. There were unfamiliar birds milling about not too far away and as she watched, one dived from the sky into the water's surface, gone for one heartwrenching moment before it popped back up. Bizarre creatures.

"When I need to refresh my mind a bit, I like to go for a fly around the area." Ymir glanced quizically to her side Nanalee began to speak again. "How about we go for one together? Your, um, flying stick is very cool."

Ymir blinked, snorting to herself as she straightened. "Yeah. It's called a glide-"

The air stirred beside her as Nanalee launched into the air and, well - Ymir was allowed to be a little envious of the powerful wingspan that made the sky their domain. She set her hand on her bag, noting belatedly that the harpy had a few more scrapes and bruises from when she'd last seen them.

"It will probably help you get away from your seasickness too." They waved a taloned foot and Ymir eyed it suspriciously. She had more than a few scars from those. "So? How about it?"

The cliffs and crags of an island beckoned in the far distance, and despite the many jagged outcrops of rock that lay between the open waters and its shores, it had a certain allure. Ymir glanced over her shoulder towards the cabins, noting Ashitaka on the opposite side of the vessel and in a split second she made up her mind.

She turned back to Nanalee, the corners of a smile starting to show as she pulled out one of her nimbler glider designs. "How about a race?" She nodded to the foreboding outcrop of land in the distance, the ocean interspersed with rock jutting out like spears the closer one got. "First one to reach the shore. We can see what sort of fun it has in store for us."

They'd find their way back easy enough. Ymir could do with being off the boat and they were there to explore - why not kill two birds with one stone...

...phrasing. She winced, beginning to wonder if humans didn't have some innate enmosity towards avian folk. It wouldn't be inconcievable from a survival standpoint, but... putting it out of her mind she hopped up onto the railing, grabbing the attention of the guildmate behind them. "Hey Ashitaka! If the others ask, Nanalee and I are going to check out the island!"

With that she snapped open the wings on her staff and hopped off the edge, setting the glider under her feet and pulling on the winds to lift her into the air. The familiar elation was a welcome change as she angled towards the new destination, her mind made up regardless of whether Nanalee decided to accept.

A lot had happened in a short amount of time. Eiru had managed to collect themselves enough to explain a bit regarding their sudden bone chilling scream. Apparently Siren's Watch was the name of an island supposedly inhabited by sirens and it was also the resting place of some kind of relic underneath said island. Whether that meant there was spelunking trip in the future or some swimming excursion he wasn't sure but given the legends he had heard of sirens, Ruvo felt he could make a decent guess it may very well be beneath the waves. One detail did catch his attention and that was the stipulation that none of them were to dare touch the relic though the reason as to why couldn't be disclosed. "I guess its dangerous to touch, but why not just say that?" he thought to himself. The answer as to why would likely be revealed in time but the veil of secrecy made one wonder what this relic really was.

Following that, a truly strange exchange of words ensued as Eiru began trying to scold Leo though it seemed the witch ended up becoming flustered as they tried to work out what exactly it was they were trying to say. Choosing to instead drop the metaphor entirely, Eiru then began to push blame and insults onto Leo before closing it out by calling both Ymir and Leo dense when they are together. In all honestly the whole tirade seemed pretty uncalled for and ridiculous. Then just like that the witch was off directing their attention to the quartermaster in an attempt to renegotiate deals to make sure they got to the island. "And, if you're willing I believe having you personally tag along would be most beneficial. You will be aptly rewarded. Ruvo, Natalee you too! What do you say~?" "Well if ---" Ruvo was about to respond but a very clearly angry Ymir cut him off followed up an peeved Leo. The two were rightfully not putting up with the nonsense that Eiru was spouting and made sure that the witch did not forget that it was her actions that caused a lot of their recent troubles.

After the retaliatory statements an awkward silence hung in the air for a moment only to be broken up by Ymir storming out of the room and Leo questioning Eiru on her statement about 'gold not being an issue' when it came to payment for finding the relic. As for Ruvo he didn't know what to think, he didn't even know what prompted this whole argument in the first place. For now he figured he should just decide if he wanted to join Eiru or not to recover the relic. On one hand he wasn't much of a swimmer but if there were sirens lurking about then his magic may prove invaluable in protecting everyone from their alluring songs. In the end though it probably wasn't going to be much of a decision, if they were going to the island no matter what and if his presence would protect others then it would almost be expected he attend. Taking a seat on his hammock and letting out a sigh "Truly never a dull moment with the guild".

"Captain," One of his crew marched into the captain's quarters through the nearly broken door, it was a miracle in itself that the door hadn't completely collapsed yet given the number of holes in the wood and the almost excessive amount of rust on all the hinges. Wyck sighed, then again that description applied to nearly everything on his dump of a ship, even so, he couldn't deny the perks of sailing on an unsinkable ship.

He irritatedly gestured for the crew member, who had apparently taken his low sigh as a sign to shut up and wait, to start talking. "Out with it, I don't have all day to listen to your useless rambling." He barked, throwing the broken compass he had been fiddling with at the wall next to his underlings head with considerable force.

The other undead hastily saluted. "Yes captain! We've arrived at the island the informant described." Wyck paused his fiddling with a different object he had picked up from his desk, putting it down with a dull thud. "Good, time to move then." He said, standing up and marching towards the door, pushing the crew member who came out of the way forcefully in the process. "Move, you're in my way."

"Captain! We've arrived at the island." Another voice called out. Wyck sighed and shot his first mate a long level look. "Yes, I can see that. So this is where it is huh." The first mate gave a small nod. "This is the place the informant mentioned, we can't be sure if the relic is actually here though." Wyck shook his head. "No, it's here."

The first mate hesitated. "If you're sure..." "It's here. Because if it's not I'll make sure that informant becomes an undead and suffers for all eternity." Wyck growled before turning around and barking orders at the crew. "Prepare to go on land, we're here to take that fae relic whatever it takes." The first mate spoke up again. "Captain, what do we do about the siren's guarding the relic according to the informant?"

"Kill them all, they remind me of that wench Melina." He barked, punching the railing of the ship with enough force to leave a dent. "We're getting that relic and when I have my hands on it I'll finally be able to get rid of those pests keeping me in check, starting with Melina and that brat Cynric. Now then, go!" He commanded, stretching his arm towards the island with a wicked grin.

Eiru Eagna
Gold Rank Support

Eiru was not expecting to be grabbed suddenly by Ymir. Scratch that! Eiru was not expecting to be grabbed by Ymir for a second time since having embarked on this quest. In fact, being turned around so suddenly and glared down upon by the woman completely caught the witch off guard and a short gasp escaped her lips when it happened. Following which the witch could do nothing more than listen to what it was Ymir was 'laying down'. Actually, the witch didn't even get to defuse the situation thereafter due to the fact the woman stormed off following a soft shove. The whole ordeal left Eiru quite literally scratching her head in confusion. "Did I? That doesn't sound like something I'd do... wait... no actually that does check out. But did I?" Moving her hand to her chin Eiru thought for a moment on the subject "Perhaps. I owe Ymir an apology. I do faintly remember the hostile procurement of a diary... vaguely."

Brought back to the matter at hand by Hanzel's words Eiru listened carefully to what he had to say, it seemed he was willing to dock at the island but unwilling to venture any further. A shame, truly but an understandable response. He had men under his command and they all relied on him should something happen. He had a duty to his crew and if they weren't going then it was clear he wouldn't be either. Nodding her head in understanding Eiru hummed before responding "You have my thanks Bazel. Docking at the island is more than enough. I understand you will be putting your men at risk doing so and the longer you stay the more danger you invite. I won't ask you to venture into the depths of the island with us so. But I will offer you compensation should anyone be injured during your stay. That is the least I can do for you and your men."

Leo spoke up soon after and to Eiru's surprise, he didn't follow Ymir's example and grab her. Ymir seemed to be extremely upset and yet Leo seemed much more composed despite being the main target of her jokes. How odd, perhaps Eiru really was dense. Focusing on the man's features Eiru's face grew stern as did her tone of voice "Leo. If you think throwing your name around is going to convince me to give you a small fortune you are out of you're mind.". Taking a step toward the man Eiru stepped in close, her small frame giving off an odd sense of authority when compared to the far taller Leo "Regardless of what name you wish to throw at me, Leo, Leon, Hower, Hood... you're still an Iron rank bard. Let's get one thing very straight here and now. Do you want to go out, fight some pirates and reclaim your 'rightful place'? That's what you want is it not? You want to swaddle on out there, swing your new enchanted sword around a little and sail on home,e to your sister to reclaim the tile you ran from, to begin with? You have it all figured out, don't you... I can tell by that look in your eye you want nothing more than to beat me down right now. Want to know why. Because deep down inside you know I'm right. Hold on, you're thinking I forgot something! Ymir is it? That's cute."

Moving a hand to the hilt of Leon's enchanted sword Eiru smiled softly, her face hidden from Leon's view by her hat "Leon. This relic is important to me. It is also important to someone far more powerful than you could even begin to comprehend. A ship is no small reward and I will not give it to you because you are of the Howard family. I will not give it to you because you had the audacity to talk down to me from a position you think is above my own. But I will grant you a ship when that relic is safely within my grasp. Because I view you as a friend. Because you are closest to my 'best friend' and because you hold her dear. But make no mistake Leonidas". Pulling the sword from its hilt, the metallic blade sparking to life vigorously, Eiru moved to run a finger along its flat. Lightning the like of which Leo had not yet been able to call forth began arching to the floorboards, searing the wood with an awful smell. The lighting flickering in and out highlighted the witches pale, almost translucent skin each and every time. Perhaps even for the first time leading the man to question whether she was as human as she led everyone to believe."I am a gold rank adventurer for a reason Leo. And I haven't had the chance to say this before but. If you ever hurt Ymir. I will kill you." Locking eyes with the man as she returned his sword to its hilt Eiru smiled softly "I mean that quite literally. So, have we a deal Mr. Hower? You get me my relic and I get you a ship. Oh! And before I forget, I don't actually think you're a pervert, I was just joking. I apologise!"

"Leo. If you think throwing your name around is going to convince me to give you a small fortune you are out of you're mind." Leonidas had meant to use his real name to illustrate that he was serious and couldn't be bought off with the usual few rounds of drinks and accommodation for the night, not to strong-arm Eiru into paying him more. He wasn't stupid, he knew the witch cared little about authority and any threats made based on lineage would have no effect. Still, with the way he phrased it and the uncharacteristically cold tone he had used, it wasn't exactly a surprise that Eiru would misunderstand his intentions.

"Regardless of what name you wish to throw at me, Leo, Leon, Hower, Hood... you're still an Iron rank bard. Let's get one thing very straight here and now. Do you want to go out, fight some pirates and reclaim your 'rightful place'? That's what you want is it not? Hold on, you're thinking I forgot something! Ymir is it? That's cute."

The witch wasn't exactly wrong, for a brief second, when Eiru mentioned him running away from Cylia, he wanted nothing more than to plant a fist in the smaller witch's face and he must have done an extremely poor job of hiding that brief desire if Eiru was able to see it that clearly. That anger passed just as quickly as it rose up however, leaving Leonidas to consider if Eiru's words carried some truth. He had always convinced himself that he hadn't run away, hadn't abandoned Cylia, and well, in a way, he definitely hadn't. After all, it was his father who chased him out when he expressed his desire to follow in his mother's footsteps and become an adventurer. He hadn't left willingly. But, it wasn't like he didn't have a choice, he could have just sucked it up and stayed. Maybe that way his sister's life could have been different. Then again, he could have never once imagined that his father would put Cylia in charge of the academy. Leonidas shook his head in frustration, forced to push the thoughts to the side when Eiru continued her speech.

"Leon. But make no mistake Leonidas" He didn't comment or try to stop her when Eiru pulled Ocean's Lullaby from its sheath and produced a lightning magic show more impressive than his wind magic and poetry combined but he did involuntarily take a step back. Eiru was plenty scary when she wanted to be and just because he wasn't angry anymore didn't mean that she wasn't.

"I am a gold rank adventurer for a reason Leo. And I haven't had the chance to say this before but. If you ever hurt Ymir. I will kill you." That was slightly ironic, especially coming from the one who had knocked Ymir out and ordered for her to be tied up and dragged on board, but Leonidas wasn't about to say any such thing, especially not with Eiru's hand still being very much within range of the hilt of the weapon she had just given back. "I mean that quite literally. So, have we a deal Mr. Hower? You get me my relic and I get you a ship. Oh! And before I forget, I don't actually think you're a pervert, I was just joking. I apologise!"

Leonidas stayed quiet for a moment before letting out a small sigh and shaking his head with a small smile. "Haah, you think you have the upper hand in an argument for once and next thing you know you're thinking about whether or not you've been lying to yourself for the better part of your life." He muttered to the ceiling with a small forced laugh before focusing his attention back on Eiru. "Yes we have a deal, and please just stick to Leo, you might not believe it but I have no intention of reclaiming anything, I just want to see my sister. Oh and while we're on that topic, some of the things you said, ouch, harsh." He said with the slightest hint of a smile and a touch of his normal cheerful tone.

"Also, you don't have to keep bringing up Ymir. I'm not completely daft Eiru, it has not escaped my notice that you've been making comments for the last several, I don't even know, weeks, maybe months at this point and I would be surprised if it has escaped Ymir's notice. Listen, Ymir has absolutely zero interest in me the way you're thinking she does. So unless you think you can prove I'm wrong, which you can't, I'm not going to do anything." He said with a somewhat uncertain smile before adding. "Besides, I have enough girls after me as is. Now, if we've put the whole thing behind us, I have some mental sorting-out I need to do before we get to the island."

Nanalee Imphon | Of Spiritual Snow
A curious explorer with a love for battle, adventure and power.

  • playful_snow_harpy_by_sakimichan_d5odkw1-fullview.jpg
Nanalee's smile only brightened as she watched Ymir pull out one of her interesting little 'glides', flying a little distance farther from the ship in anticipation of watching the human take off. For a moment, she pondered why more of the other humans didn't use the devices she had. The sensation of soaring through the winds was such an integral part of her life, that she sometimes wondered how the many other land-tied races lived without it. She did not deny that each race had their strengths however, such as the northern mermaids of Aestir... she could never comprehend the idea of finding that water as 'warm'.

Her mismatched eyes drifted back to Ymir from the ocean's surface as the human spoke, with an offer she would rarely ever deny.
"How about a race? First one to reach the shore. We can see what sort of fun it has in store for us."

Nanalee's eyes sparkled, not only due to the idea of a race, but because Ymir seemed a little livelier and happier than before, at least in her mind. Nanalee was not a great comforter, nor someone that someone could reliably come to with their problems, she was far from it actually. But over the years, she had developed her own way of making those around her happy again, which was being 'distracting'. Maybe it was because she was used to often being described as such, but she somehow made it into a good thing sometimes.

"Sure! Be careful though, those rocks look like they'll hurt if you land on them. Also! If you fall into the water I can fish you out, no worries!"

She reminded kindly towards her human companion, accidentally reminding herself of a few particularly frightening past memories. Her scaled talons would be fine to land on such jagged rocks, and having her wings wet didn't mean she couldn't fly, so she wasn't worried about herself at all. Maybe it was because she was used to being one of the few races that ruled the skies, but she subconsciously looked down upon the flying potential Ymir could have with her man-made contraption.

After Ymir left the new human swordsman with a message, prompting Nanalee to smile in his direction also, the pair set off. Furious winds whistled past them as they raced, and Nanalee found herself pleasantly surprised to see Ymir dashing at quite a fast speed. Perhaps it was because she had only ever seen Ymir idly flying around the ship on night watch, but such a sight was oddly fun to watch, almost causing Nanalee to rush headfirst into the first rock she came across.

At first, Nanalee's flying speed was quite slow because she didn't want to leave Ymir too far behind, but with a quick beat of her wings she caught up to Ymir's side. Slowly lost in the memories of when she would soar across the ocean's surface with her family, she unknowingly sped up, weaving through jagged rocks and waves and slowly leaving Ymir behind despite her initial self-limits.

Before she knew it, the crags and fearsome rolling waves of the island's shore greeted her. Blinking at the sight, she turned around and waved at Ymir before doing some odd gestures and pointing upwards to try and tell her that she was going to fly higher to get a better top-down view.

Flapping her aching wings a little tiredly now, with the rush of adrenaline slowly wearing off, she rose in elevation as more and more of the island came into view. Nanalee's first thought was that the island was quite... lifeless. As the others had described, the island was filled with tall rocks and mountains, most of which seemed dangerously jagged and steep for their height. Barely any trees were in sight, much less forests. Occasionally, she would see the odd little dot in her vision scurrying about, indicating there were at least some things that lived on this island, but her surveying was cut short when she reached a top-most view of the island, almost touching the clouds.

The island... was shaped like a beast's maw. She couldn't think of any other way to describe it. And it was only after that realization, that a most ominous feeling crept over her. The tallest mountains, that she once thought were shaped erratically and lined most of the island's edge, all seemed to curve slightly inwards, like terrible teeth. There were two smaller... isles? Platforms? Pillars? Whatever they were, they seemed a bit like eyes, and Nanalee could not shake the strange feeling of being watched, even once she descended back to the island shore. She did notice the ship just docking at the island too, quite a ways away from where they were so she didn't get a good look, but rather than explaining all she had seen, she felt that it would be easier for Ymir to see for herself.

"Hey. I think you should go up there and take a look for yourself..."

Nanalee spoke somewhat solemnly, though still with the small, carefree smile she always wore. Initially, Nanalee wanted to speak a few words about the race and how fast she was on her glider, but now such thoughts had long left her mind.

"Truly never a dull moment with the guild."

Hanzel was inclined to agree, nevermind that dull moments weren't always a bad thing. Especially not at sea. "Your lot appear particulary chaotic," he observed, watching the two white-haired troublemakers start on their second round. The taller one was the first to storm off, and Hanzel watched quietly as several others exited after them.

That was about the time that Leo stepped in, and Hanzel picked up on a number of interesting things while the two of them were speaking without reservation. One was a Hower, the other apparently had just as much money as one, and neither of them seemed to care who heard.

"You have my thanks Bazel-" He briefly weighed up the merits of trying to correct them, but it was likely a lost cause. "Docking at the island is more than enough. I understand you will be putting your men at risk doing so and the longer you stay the more danger you invite. I won't ask you to venture into the depths of the island with us so. But I will offer you compensation should anyone be injured during your stay. That is the least I can do for you and your men."

He sighed to himself and inclined his head, catching Ruvo's eye on the way out and nodding at them to follow. "We'll have to ask for you and Leonadis's help again," he said, heading up the stairs. "You might've picked up from the name already, but we'll be dealing with sound based enemies on the new route." Not that there wasn't a chance of running into them along their original plan, but a detour to Siren's Watch meant a number of things. The entire east side of the island was deathwish for ships---broken hulls littered the shallows, leftover from violent storms or vessels lured into rocks in by the sirens' song. The Salvager would have to travel south around the island to find a safe place to dock---and that would take them to the edge of the old abyss. "We have some other precautions-" A few members who were part or fully merfolk had natural resistance, and there were a number of ways of drowning out noise... "But I'd like to avoid using them if possible. If you and Leonadis are able to come up with a plan after he's recovered, we might be able to go a trip without hearing the captain's singing."

-an experience one could happily live without. Hanzel glanced to where Scrapper was taking a nap up on the stern, blessedly silent as they recovered from the morning's rush. Unfortunately they were in for another round. Heading up the stairs Hanzel talked briefly with the captain and soon enough the crew were up and turning the ship around.

While he was up there he noted their newest member on deck, standing off to the side where they wouldn't be in the way. As he watched they appeared to cast a spell over their weapon, though from a distance it was impossible to tell if there were any difference after.

"Preparing for a fight already?" Hanzel said, having made his way down the stairs. He stopped at their side, staring out over the open waters. "I'd try to avoid any encounters this time round honestly." He tapped the side of his head in indication. "I assume you've at least heard some of the stories about sirens."

The waters were calm, deceptively so, but neither the ocean nor the skies above were truly ever still. The glider dipped with the added weight, but it only took a moment for her to compensate with winds and it all evened out.

"Sure!" Nanalee grinned as Ymir joined them a safe distance from the hull, the both of them treading air in a mixture of wingbeats and controlled currents. Ymir didn't have to move as much to keep herself aloft, but the constant adjustments didn't come nearly as naturally as it did to airborne folk. "Be careful though, those rocks look like they'll hurt if you land on them."

Nanalee's voice carried well in the air, starting at a higher register that naturally cut through all the noise and squalor. Knowing the winds would only carry her voice away, Ymir didn't bother to answer, though maybe that was for the best. She might've told them to be more worried about themselves. Pulling the headpiece she always wore down over her eyes, Ymir started on turning her glider in the right direction.

"Also!" Nanalee piped up again, catching Ymir's attention as she prepared to take off properly. "If you fall into the water I can fish you out, no worries!"

Now that would be a disgrace. There was no reasonable excuse outside ineptitude she could think to justify falling off her own glider. Being fished out by a harpy would be pretty novel, admittedly---they were normally the ones knocking her out of the air---but nowhere near something she'd want to try. She rolled her head with her eyes, diverting one of Scrapper's gusts and speeding off towards the island. It didn't take her long to rise to a safe height above the water, glancing over to see Nanalee had already caught up.

Ymir settled at a comfortable distance, set on having them in her periphery. The memories of talons and feathers amidst violent snow were enough to keep her on edge, though for once it wasn't the things in the sky she was mostly wary of. The tinted glass she wore gave the ocean an otherwordly colour, not unlike a sea of opal, and despite the steady winds she kept low against her glider. Sailors claimed the ocean could be tempestuous, but the skies were just as much so.

They spent an indeterminate amount of time above the deep waters, and the towering monolith of an island grew taller by the moment. In time the bottomless blue gave way to coral shelfs and rising banks of rock, and Ymir pulled her goggles briefly up to see the water had taken on a wavering, cyan hue. White foam spilled around the jagged outcrops of rock that started off small, but grew in size until they threatened to dismount her if she wasn't careful. She slowed, activating her second sight as she dipped in among the fallen jungle of stone. They passed more than a few sunken vessels, broken hulls leaning against the rocks - some speared straight through.

It was only when she heard the faint echoes of a melody that she shook herself out of her growing fixation. She swept back into the safety of sky, far out of reach and range. The closer they got the more she caught sight of long, fish-like tails winding through waters that seemed to glow, and the faintest of melodies that teased the senses. A growing sense of unease permeated the air.

She was reminded briefly of their race when she saw Nanalee up ahead, but Ymir dismissed the thought in the same breath. She alternated between her two sights as she slowed to a careful glide, drifting between the monolithic stones on the ghost of a breeze.

"Hey."

Nanalee's voice caught her attention as Ymir reached the 'shore', stepping off her glider onto the edge of an outcrop for a rest. The edge of the water below her wasn't so much sand as it was a mix of dead, broken coral and sediment from the towering precipice. Ymir looked thoughtfully over the jagged waters they'd navigated, seeing that their ship had changed course far in the distance.

"I think you should go up there and take a look for yourself..."

Nanalee spoke quietly as she alighted on the rock, which Ymir was privately grateful for. They didn't need half the denizens of the island alerted to their presence---especially if Ymir's growing suspicions about the place were correct. The uncanny feeling of being watched had grown stronger. It wasn't a sensation she was fond of.

With a brief gesture of confirmation she stepped over the edge and caught a draft rising towards the spires. As if the graveyard of ships they'd flown over wasn't foreboding enough, the jagged landscape only got rockier the higher they went, and where vegetation did grow it was wiry and tough. Ymir landed on one of the highest peaks, and it was clear enough to see the whole island jutted to one side, curving over an alcove that didn't seem altogether unfriendly---

And not entirely inaccessible, given there was already a ship docked in the shallows.

"That's---" Ymir held her breath, glancing to the side as she tracked the ocean's surface for signs of the Salvager. When she found the vessel they were still a ways away, but it wouldn't take long for them to find a place to weigh anchor. The crucial question was whether this new ship was going to be a hindrance... Ymir cocked her head, squinting down at the shore. "Are they shipwrecked?"

They definitely looked shipwrecked. From what she could see the sails were in tatters, and there were more holes than humanly possible in the hull. Small figures scurried about on the shore, dispersed among the many rocks and crags as they spread across the island, but there wasn't much to say whether they'd be friendly or hostile...

"I suppose the easiest way is to ask," she mused, fidgeting with one of the bands on her glider. Better that they find out before the Salvager was in view --- not that these people would be going anywhere with the state of their ship, but they might see an easy target for a hijacking. "What do you think?" she said to Nanalee, unable to make up her mind.

She pointed towards the northmost part of the island, the opposite direction from where the Salvager would arrive. "If they start shooting or something we can fly that way. You or I circle around and warn the others after we're out of sight." OR, they might be friendly, but the emblem on their flag was too torn up to identify. This definitely wasn't the sort of place one wanted to get stranded at, but that went for their crew as well. "Or we could head straight back to the Salvager. Either works."

Out of the corner of his working eye, Ashitaka spotted Hanzel - he was fairly sure that was his name - approaching him from the left. He turned to face the man, having eased himself significantly since the tensions below deck. "Preparing for a fight already? I'd try to avoid any encounters this time round honestly." The swordsman smiled and shook his head. "Just fixing up some damage. Not looking to get hurt today, either. Been a long time since I last sailed."

"I assume you've at least heard some of the stories about sirens." He pondered that for a moment. Sifting through his memories, Ashitaka returned an answer: "Yes, but only one. We grew up close to the shore. Trade vessels came and went on the regular. Every now and again the kids - myself among them - would slip behind some crates and listen to their stories. One of them mentioned Sirens."

He rummaged around in his pocket.

"That said, I've also encountered a Siren. Again, only once, when I was out to sea with my cousin. I learned that it doesn't affect everyone equally: I was drawn to the song, but my cousin nearly dived into the water. I also learned that a good hard slap is a great way to return someone to the present - oldest trick in the book." He chuckled. "Even so, since then I've gotten ahold of these-"

He pulled what looked like two small balls of sponge.

"Earplugs. No idea if they work or not, but it's a nice comfort."

Ruvo would of stuck of around to hear how Eiru responded to what Leo had to say, but it seemed the quartermaster was gesturing for him to follow. "We'll have to ask for you and Leonidas's help again," "Help with what?" he questioned following Hanzel up the stairs. He figured it would involve their respective magical affinities given that last time they put a sea monster to sleep. "You might've picked up from the name already, but we'll be dealing with sound based enemies on the new route." "Yea the sirens... I've heard stories that they can lure in sailors to their doom with their songs" "We have some other precautions- But I'd like to avoid using them if possible. If you and Leonidas are able to come up with a plan after he's recovered, we might be able to go a trip without hearing the captain's singing." "I'll check back in on him and Eiru in a few minutes then, hopefully they would of wrapped up their whole exchange by then" he replied before splitting ways from the quartermaster who looked to be heading to wake Captain Scrapper up from a nap. While it was true that both Leo and himself could both handle enemies that weaponize sound and enchantments their methods of combating against it could be hard to use at the same time without prior planning. Typically Ruvo would simply create an area of silence around him or on a target of his choosing, but depending on his choice it could stop Leo's magical poetry from being heard. So making sure they had a plan would be exceptionally important, that and perhaps making use of Eiru's magic that seemed to be able to focus sound magic in some way.

"Captain! Captain, we have a problem!" One of the crew members rushed up to Wyck, spyglass still in hand. Wyck didn't give the undead a chance to catch his breath, grabbing him by his collar and lifting him slightly off the sand of the beach. "Out with it then, you know I hate wasting time." He hissed, lifting his other hand covered in an ugly blackish-gray glow close to the man's face.

"We spotted a figure flying above the island." The man hastily reported. Wyck blinked a few times before lowering his left hand to his side and letting go of the unfortunate crew member's collar, nonchalantly pushing him back as he did to send the man tumbling backward. "So?"

"Well, I, uh, we, we thought you would want to know." The man stammered from his position down on the ground. "Well, out with it then. Who was it? If you felt that I should know I assume your mysterious figure must be a high-ranked navy pest at the minimum."

The man hesitated. "Well, uh, no, no captain, I don't know who it was." He said before hastily adding. "But they could still be a threat." Wyck went silent for a second before he burst out laughing. "A threat, a threat he says." He pulled his leg back and kicked the crew member in the stomach with enough force to send him flying a good distance backward. "Say that again and you're dead." Wyck barked, any trace of laughter gone from his voice in an instant.

"There is no one I don't know who could be a threat to me and once I get my hands on that relic there will be no one that is a threat to me left." He declared before spinning on his heel and facing away from the crew member he had just kicked. "As for that mysterious figure, just kill them if they get too close, no one will stop me from getting that relic." He said with a growl. "And as for that jester over there," He added, pointing over his shoulder. "Fix him up and have him stay behind with a few others to guard the ship, I can't have him dying on me. Cleaning up his corpse would be far too annoying."

"I'll check back in on him and Eiru in a few minutes then, hopefully they would of wrapped up their whole exchange by then."

Hanzel nodded as the soft groan of the ship marked a change in direction. It was eerily loud against the blanketing silence—even Scrapper had ceased his usual directions, coming to rest on the navigator's shoulder at the helm before disappearing ahead of the vessel to scout the way. A heavy mist had rolled around, obscuring the jagged waters and the perils within.

"Please do," he said eventually. Though he worried what sort of state the two below deck would be left in, Ruvo was level-headed enough to handle it. At the very least Leo and Eiru didn't seem liable to throw hands at a moment's notice, though he did have growing concerns over the strange light he'd seen emanating from the cabin.

"Yes, but only one. We grew up close to the shore." Hanzel listened as Ashitaka spoke of his younger days near the water. There was familiarity in the words. A resemblance to the life Hanzel once lived before his unwilling departure onto the waves. "That said, I've also encountered a Siren... I learned that it doesn't affect everyone equally: I was drawn to the song, but my cousin nearly dived into the water. I also learned that a good hard slap is a great way to return someone to the present."

"A tried and true method," he murmured, laughing against the whisper of a breeze Scrapper maintained to keep them going. "It depends on the person most certainly."

""Even so, since then I've gotten ahold of these-" Ashitaka pulled out two pieces of material and Hanzel nodded, recognising the intended use easily enough. "Earplugs. No idea if they work or not, but it's a nice comfort."

"Blocking out their voices entirely is one of the best methods," Hanzel agreed. The closer one got to a Siren the harder it was to break their spell. "The presence of bards is another one." He nodded towards Ruvo, glancing at the entrance to the cabins as well. "Music is a powerful tool on the ocean. One of our oldest legends is of a fisherman who could calm the waves with naught but a--"

Hanzel cut off abruptly, tilting his head back to listen. There was little at first but the waves and creaking hull and billow of sails against the wind—most of the crew had already fallen silent with the arrival of the mist—but present behind it all was the insidious notes of a melody, so in tune with the ocean that most wouldn't hear it until far too late. The shadow of the peninsula loomed above them in the distance, watching from above as if to remind they were in waters not their own.

"You may want to put those in," Hanzel said, his easygoing posture slipping away. "Ruvo-!" he called in hushed urgency, turning to pass by them on his way to the helm. "We're out of time. Get Leo out here and prepare yourselves." Hanzel in the meanwhile would need to inform Scrapper. The old parrot was half deaf and, perhaps more unfortunately, tone deaf as well. His songs had the effect of both driving away sirens and wanting to make the crew throw themselves overboard. He'd need to be informed that the countermeasure wouldn't be necessary before their enemies came into range.

Ruvo was trying to relax to the sound of the waves as he leaned up against the wall near the entrance to the cabins, though it was strangely difficult with how quiet things were. It seemed he had grown somewhat used to the hustle and bustle that were usually on the boat which was now replaced mostly by silence as a fog began to roll in. "Ruvo-!" Standing at attention, Ruvo turned to the quartermaster who was rushing past him. "We're out of time. Get Leo out here and prepare yourselves." "O-Oh, uh right!" he responded caught off guard from the sudden urgency of the matter, he hadn't yet quite heard any singing but he guessed they had entered the sirens territory sooner than expected.

Now rushing down the stairs into the cabin Ruvo hoped that Leo and Eiru's argument was over. "Leo! Hanzel needs us on deck right away. I think there's some sirens nearby that we need to protect everyone from" he said noticing that the two seemed to have put some distance between one another for the moment. He had also wanted to invite Eiru to lend whatever assistance or advice they had to offer but he also didn't want to make things more difficult if another argument cropped up. Though he had feeling that if Eiru wanted to help that no one could really stop them. Now heading back up the stairs hopefully with Leo in tow Ruvo would ready his instrument. "I had wanted to plan out how we were going to do this, but I guess we will just have to improvise again. Seems to work out for us"

"Leo! Hanzel needs us on deck right away. I think there's some sirens nearby that we need to protect everyone from" Ruvo's request, though seeing as it was just a passed on message from Hanzel it could just as well be taken as an order if Leonidas wanted to stay on the Salvager, came basically as soon as he had given Eiru a monologue of his own. He sighed deeply, so far for being given a moment to sort his thoughts. Eiru's answer would have to wait until after this situation was dealt with. That is, if Eiru even wanted to answer, he figured she would bring the topic up again herself if she should want to and hurried after Ruvo after grabbing his violin from his hammock.

"I had wanted to plan out how we were going to do this, but I guess we will just have to improvise again. Seems to work out for us" That did make Leonidas chuckle. "You should know by now that planning things is not really my style nor my forte my dear fellow." He offered with a small grin, giving Hanzel a sharp nod as he made his way to the middle of the deck.

He put the bow on the strings of his instrument before pausing briefly. Not planning things did come with the downside of having to actually be able to come up with a solution before it was too late. Now it wasn't like Leonidas couldn't think of a few solutions, they were all just simply stupid or took too much mana, they still had an entire adventure on the island itself before them and he still hadn't been able to stock up on any medicine. It would be exceptionally easy to simply make the crew of the Salvager fall asleep with a soothing tune and while that might accomplish the task of drowning out the siren's song it would also most definitely lead to the Salvager being shipwrecked anyway without any sailors to control it. Likewise, it wouldn't be impossible for him to block out the sound of the siren's completely with some spellcraft of his own but protecting every single person on board the scavenger was sure to burn through his mana reserves at an annoyingly fast rate which would leave him useless for the adventure on the island.

In the end, he took a step back towards Ruvo. "Are you confident you can manage a way to block out the siren's song if I support you with my magic?" He asked, he didn't have to be the center of attention, if Ruvo would be able to achieve the desired result while using a reasonable amount of mana he would gladly take a step back and fill a supporting role. If worst came to worst he would just have to go with his second plan and hope Ruvo could support him enough to not completely run out of mana.

Nanalee Imphon | Of Spiritual Snow

At first, the winds felt as carefree and revitalizing as ever, but as unease and trepidation crept over her, Nanalee couldn't help but feel as if even the sky was out to get them as she re-ascended to follow after Ymir. Looking back down at the island once more, she focused her attention on the foreign ship as Ymir spoke, thinking that they blended in awfully well with the shipwrecks that littered the island's borders, except that they somehow seemed intact and afloat.

"That's---Are they shipwrecked? I suppose the easiest way is to ask, what do you think?"

"Well, at least, it looks like they are." Nanalee began plainly, her sharp eyes of an aerial predator picking up all kinds of inconceivable wounds on the ship that look more than fatal. The fact that the ship hadn't fallen apart or sank yet was a miracle she didn't really understand. Was it held up by magic? Some invisible coating? She had no idea, but was very curious about it. It also looked as if... they had some foreign races onboard which she had never seen before. She couldn't clearly make out the details from this distance, but some seemed quite... whitish? And some seemed a mix of white and human skin tones.

"If they start shooting or something we can fly that way. You or I circle around and warn the others after we're out of sight."

"That sounds like a good plan!" Nanalee nodded enthusiastically, internally full of praise for the idea. She hadn't thought of coming up with much of a plan at all, and was just going to casually head closer to investigate. Despite the ominous tingly feeling at the back of her spine, she still didn't have much sense of caution yet. Hence why she was internally glad Ymir came with her, since it was always good to at least have some backup measures. She just tended to forget to think about them.

"Or we could head straight back to the Salvager. Either works."

"No, I like your plan. Since we're here to scout, we may as well bring back as much information as we can. Let's go!" Nanalee smiled before taking the dive and stretching her wings once more. The sound of the wind against her ears still seemed particularly harsh, but she remained relatively unfazed as her curiosity for the foreign ship took precedence. They looked practically ruined, so whatever little sense of fear she may have had for the foreign ship was greatly diminished. If anything, she started wondering what kind of story they had to tell about their ship's current state.

As she swerved past a jagged pillar of stone, her eyes curiously focused on the individuals scrambling about on whatever was left of the ship's deck. It was only then she realized that the whitish colour she saw of them from afar was actually bone! Some were practically living skeletons, whilst others were mixed and matched with rotting flesh and yellowed bone. One particularly interesting individual had only half his face made of flesh, whilst the other half seemed to have melted away into bone. Just as Nanalee was marvelling over witnessing the fabled undead she had only heard of in passing, she watched the crew point at her and raise their firearms without hesitation.

"Turn back!" With her eyes widening slightly, she immediately dove to avoid the incoming bullets and warn Ymir. Raising a temporary wall of ice to block the consequent fire so that they could retreat safely, Nanalee soared higher and fled towards the north as planned. The sound of stray bullets whizzing through the air kept her alert, until the echoes faded far behind her as she circled round and through the tallest spires and landed atop one of the flatter peaks.

"You should report back. My appearance is too conspicuous. I think they must've seen me much clearer than they saw you. I also used some of my magic. I'll stay here and regroup with you guys when you dock."

Nanalee started explaining her thoughts immediately once she regrouped with Ymir, the long flight to flee had given more than enough time for her to think about their next course of action more thoroughly.

"I can see things from farther distances, so I should be able to watch you guys. If I have to move from this peak, or need a better vantage point, I will leave a mark in the direction that I went."

She added quickly, before ushering Ymir away.

"Go now! Quickly! We'd be terrible scouts if they meet with the hostile ship unprepared because we didn't warn them in time!"

It was relaxing to share words with a friendly face. Ashitaka didn't have very many enemies, to be fair, but he spent most of his time away from other folk. It was refreshing to feel human for a change, and not like an automaton. "Music is a powerful tool on the ocean. One of our oldest legends is of a fisherman who could calm the waves with naught but a--"

The silence that followed gave Ashitaka pause. He heard it too. It was exactly as he had remembered it no less, even all these years later. He could feel his attention begin to wane. "I hear it too." In a swift motion, he shoved the roundels into his ears and - nothing. Not just silence, but pure silence. It took him back at first, before orienting himself to a complete loss of sound. As suddenly as it started, the charm ended, and Ashitaka returned to the present. Definitely a good buy.

Hanzel's mouth was moving, but he heard nothing. Still, he probably assumed it was an instruction regarding the plugs, and he merely nodded. He turned to Ruvo, mouth moving again, with the bard saying something in return. He could only make out one consonant from his poor lipreading skills: L. L? Leo. He was looking for Leo. The sooner the better too, the song was getting louder - maybe. At least that's what happened last time.

With Hanzel and Ruvo gone, there was only the lone swordsman in the silence. A few deck hands were starting to drift, looking over the side to try and find what sweet tone waited for them. With nobody else around - or at least, none that he could see - it fell to him to keep them sane. He made his way over; shouting would be futile. He took the nearest crew member, and delivered a cold, hard, back-handed slap.

"Snap out of it!"

That seemed to do the trick. What first began as anger and confusion settled into understanding, gratitude, and then panic as he scrambled to do the same to the others. It was a temporary fix: obviously he couldn't go around slapping every crew member until they were out of the waters. They needed a more permanent solution - as to say, the bards.

Ashitaka had never fought a Siren before. With a little luck, he still wouldn't. His left hand rested cautiously on the leather hilt of his blade.

"Those bards better be good..."

Eiru Eagna
Gold Rank Support

With Hanzel looking for Leo's aid Eiru was quickly left alone by the man soon after he had given his response and far too soon for her to give one of her own. Although with everything that had been said thus far it was probably for the best. Now alone in the bunk area, Eiru moved to plonk herself down on the floor cross-legged, rooting in her bag as she did so "Hmph, kids these days! If Ymir doesn't like that man then I'll eat my hat!" Producing a quill and parchment Eiru went about writing against the hardwood floor "Perhaps I was too harsh on the man. After all, I fled my home too did I not. Perhaps this is what the humans call... projecting. Huh, how unusual. To think I'd lose my cool like that, how unsightly...". Finishing with the parchment Eiru returned her quill to her bag and produced a brass tube with which she secured the parchment for delivery. Calling over her broom Eiru tied the tube to the base of the handle and smiled softly with a sigh "My first letter home and it's strictly business huh. I'm in for an earful... Take this right to the palace and let no one stop you my little broom". And with that Eiru's broom departed the room, coming up to the deck before blasting off with a loud and echoing boom.

Eiru fell back with a sigh thereafter and moved her hands to cushion her head "Well, guess I'll leave the sirens to the bards. My mana's running on empty and I fear Ymir's rocks are all but drained. Plus I doubt that craggy island will do me any good."

Those bastards- Ymir landed nearby atop the peak and immediately set about examining one of the wings on her glider. A stray bullet had punched straight through the leathery material, leaving a neat little hole that was bound to get worse with time. This was one of my better ones too.

"You should report back. My appearance is too conspicuous." Ymir forced the wings of her staff closed and shoved it back into her bag as Nanalee spoke. "I can see things from farther distances, so I should be able to watch you guys-"Oi!Ymir had half a mind to object to that, eyes narrowing. Her sight would be just as effective--she just wasn't fussed on sticking around as a target, and Nanalee was making a good point about urgency.

"Go now! Quickly! We'd be terrible scouts if they meet with the hostile ship unprepared because we didn't warn them in time!"

"I get it!" she huffed as Nanalee shooed her towards the edge. The glider she pulled out was notably larger than her previous one, with wings that spanned the length of the staff rather than a mere two thirds. "Circle back and tell us if their movements change at all," she said. "Try and make sure none of them spot the ship if possible. They seemed to be spreading out in search of something." Supplies, she would have thought at first, but if they discovered there was an easier ship to hijack those plans could change. "And absoutely do not go towards any songs if you hear them."

It was called Siren's Watch for a reason no doubt. Even if they were pretty far from the water it would be best to be wary. Hopping off of the ledge they'd found, Ymir started towards where she last remembered the Salvager being.

The melody that grew with the crashing waves was all too insidiously sweet and familiar. Some of the crew, much like Ashitaka, who were familiar to sailing and the dangers of the ocean had their own countermeasures ready. The only ones completely unaffected were the merfolk, one of whom moved to the helm to take the wheel as Scrapper's voice drowned out any initial effects of the song.

"INCOMING!! KRAAAAA!! ALL CREW BELOW DECK! ALL CREW BELOW DECK!"

The iridescent tails of the sirens could be seen between jagged outcrops as they approached the ship and those weak to the song scrambled for the safety of the cabins. Hanzel had to grab a number of sailors who had fallen into a daze and shove them towards where they needed to be, noting as Ashitaka slapped or shook several others awake. Scrapper rose higher into the sky as the preparations began to finish, and Hanzel turned to see where the two bards were up to in their planning.

"You should know by now that planning things is not really my style nor my forte my dear fellow." "I suppose I should, but this seemed a bit too important to not at least discuss a little" To his surprise Leo seemed to pause for a moment when he said this, placing his bow onto the strings of his instrument before pulling away and taking a step towards him. "Are you confident you can manage a way to block out the siren's song if I support you with my magic?" Well that wasn't quite what he expected. Here he expected to simply support whatever plan Leo had in mind given he was certainly a lot more experienced with improvisation, but now it seemed all eyes were on him to provide a solution and in a timely manner too. Needless to say the pressure was on, especially with the siren's song increasing in intensity which limited their time to plan anything. Ruvo did have some options at his disposal with his magic given that he could manipulate sound in a variety of ways. He could try to push the incoming siren song elsewhere like how one may throw their voice but there was still the risk it could be heard if he wasn't careful. Then there was the option of just trying to overwhelm the song with a consistent loud enough sound, but he would rather not permanently deafen his fellow guild members and the crew. No, it seemed his original strategy may indeed be the best. He would create an area of silence that could act as a refuge to stay safe from the song. The only issue was that there was no telling how long it may have to be maintained. Would the sirens simply pursue the Scavenger or would they give up after awhile? There was no way of knowing, and while up-keeping his spell wouldn’t be as taxing as the big burst of mana usage like in the fight against the sea monster Ruvo also wasn’t sure draining himself of mana over time was a good idea either.

Letting out a sigh, Ruvo turned to face Leo. "I'm confident I can block out their song, but I will need your support. With my magic I can create an area of silence that will stop any noise from coming in but also all noise within. I'll do my best to cover everyone I can but I'll be relying on you to help anyone I miss and to stop the sirens if they chase us." he said before he moved to position himself closer to the doors of the cabins. “Oh and if you need to use of your poetry magic, I’d do it now. Communication will be tricky for a while” he briefly warned before starting his melody.

For those perceptive enough to recall the chords played for Ruvo’s sound amplification spell, the melody he played would sound familiar. Almost as if it was the same but played in reverse, and with each passing moment the sound from his lute grew quieter and quieter until suddenly no sound could be heard despite Ruvo visibly still playing the instrument. In fact for those in the vicinity everything would of gone deathly silent as a 30 foot sphere of silence would be created centered on Ruvo. If everything went well the sphere would be large enough the protect those in the cabins below deck. And if not then with any luck Leo would be able to help .

Leonidas chuckled at Ruvo's surprised expression. "No need to look at me like that, I don't always need to hog all the attention." He said with a smile before continuing with a more serious expression. "Think about it calmly, no pressure, I have a working plan up my sleeve if you think it will be an issue, it would just cost me an annoyingly high amount of mana to pull off." He said with a nod.

"I'm confident I can block out their song, but I will need your support. With my magic I can create an area of silence that will stop any noise from coming in but also all noise within. I'll do my best to cover everyone I can but I'll be relying on you to help anyone I miss and to stop the sirens if they chase us." Leonidas nodded. "Seems like you're better at improvisation than you give yourself credit for."

“Oh and if you need to use of your poetry magic, I’d do it now. Communication will be tricky for a while” Leonidas nodded, if he was responsible for covering anyone Ruvo's spell missed it wasn't out of the question that he would have to travel outside the area of the spell himself.

"Soon I won't be able to hear my own voice but now already I intend to block out all noise." He cast the spell in a hurry before Ruvo started playing, the silence enveloping him immediately. He could see Ruvo playing his instrument but the music didn't reach his ears. Even so, Leonidas could vaguely imagine what the song would have sounded like by observing the chords Ruvo played.

Having to only cover himself and anyone who ended up unaffected by Ruvo's area with his spell took considerably less mana compared to having to cover everyone like he would have had to if Ruvo couldn't think of a way to block the sirens out. He shot the other bard and quartermaster both a thumbs up before making his way around the ship, keeping a close eye on all of the sailors.

The winds were being fickle again, much to Ymir's annoyance. The reflective goggles and cloth mouth cover hid her scowl, but the everchanging shifts in pressure meant it took far more effort to keep the large wingspan stable--and the subtle new melody playing at the back of her mind didn't help.

The source proved more detrimental than she expected when one of the wings dipped and nearly threw her off the glider, accompanied by a lurch of panic and fear as she realised how close to the water she'd begun to drift. She pulled up, climbing into the air to gain some much needed distnace, but even the rush of wind around her head could do nothing to silence the memories of the song calling her back towards the waves.

Damned ocean. She blew out a puff of air that did little to warm the cloth covering her features. The very presence of the water below seemed to sap the warmth from the sky, leaving the winds misty and cold through the layers of material. Feathers might have helped keep the chill at bay, but at the very least Ymir was used to similar climates.

She relaxed somewhat as the vessel came into view between the jagged spires of rock, only to check her breathing at the sight of the surrounding waters. From up high they looked like sharks waiting in the flanks. Few rested on outcrops of rock while dozens more trailed around the ship, not in the least bothered, it seemed, by needing to wait for their quarry to come to them. The song grew in instensity as she approached the air above the ship, pulling the glider up short as she switched into a rather steep dive towards the deck. She pulled up just short of the varnished wood, but it took until her feet the solid surface with nothing but the jolt of impact to realise something was amiss.

"What in the dawn-" The voiceless words and silence were far more eery than anything she'd encountered so far. Nothing but a faint ringing filled the air, as if a string had been cut and left only deafening echoes behind. Stomping her foot against the deck did nothing. Ymir frowned, repeating the action several times before realising it wouldn't achieve anything but a limp. She glanced around the deck, spotting Leo nearby and gesturing towards her own head in silent confusion. This isn't just me, right?

Her attention strayed towards Ruvo next, which seemed to be the answer to her question. The bard was awfully focused for someone playing a soundless instrument. Ymir watched in stunned silence before recalling the circumstances with a jolt. Pulling out a blank and pen sheet she hurried up onto the helm to begin relaying the new information to the quartermaster, sketching a rough layout of the island with notes on where the unknown ship and Nanalee would be.

It wasn't until they approached the edge of the shallows that the sirens began to retreat and Hanzel gave the signal for Ruvo to stop playing. Ymir had never been so happy to hear the sounds of the ocean fill the silence. The creak of the hull and the murmur of crewmates filtered through the fading notes of the song, but there was an uneasiness as well. From the sky the drop off into deeper waters had been clear as day, and the fact that even the sirens wouldn't approach it didn't bode well.

The ship stuck as close to the edges of the island as was safe, aiming for a shallow bay that was rumoured to be safe among sailors. Even Ymir was surprised, she wouldn't have noticed it at all from the air due to the overhanging rock. The unknown ship must have approached from the other direction to have ended up where they were. Either from the islands to the north or the Hallow Shoals themselves--if the state of their ship was any indication they may even have been foolish enough to cut across the waters that separated the two.

"That was... interesting." she said, checking to make sure her voice had returned. She noted a number of the crew members giving Ashitaka the side-eye as they passed, though she couldn't fathom why. Shrugging, she approached the two bards to lean up against a nearby railing.

"Well! You made it past the sirens. I'd compliment your playing had I heard much of it." Pulling out the glider she'd originally been using, Ymir undid one of the clips to inspect the damage done to the wing. It wasn't great, if her frown was anything to go by. "Can I ask what the cannon-fire was?" She was pretty sure she'd seen something flying into the distance before she arrived, though it didn't look much like a cannon-ball. "Also I hate to say soon after the last disaster, but I think we may have pirates docked on the island."
