Viewpoint What music do you listen to during RP?

I'd love to hear and see what you guys write to. I love to listen to Legend of Zelda songs. The games date back to my childhood, and they give me such calm and positive nostalgia vibes!

Ooh I listen to (If I'm studying) Enchanted Forest Ambience Music. But when I'm not, it's one of the following. Melanie Martinez, Alec Benjamin, AJR, girl in red, or Ashnikko.

Don’t really listen to much music during RP but I do listen to music during writing. If I do listen to music it’s a mix of Sabaton and my fnaf playlist.

Personally, I like listening to stuff like the Little Nightmares OST. Such a creepy bit of music, at the same time really good. Prison toys is my personal favourite.

Typically I listen to video game pieces growing up, classical pieces, some opera of various natures, bubbly indie music, compositions from modern composers (like Denny Schneidemesser (underrated fantastic guy with fantastic music), Ean Grimm, and Emmett LaFave ("Have you heard of the high elves?")), and whatever really tickles my fancy. When in doubt, check out Newgrounds. You can really get inspiration for your characters from quirky and great composers there.

Great question, by the way.

I like to listen to Nightwish most of the time I'm RPing. The gorgeous symphonic melodies and fantastical lyrics always sweep me away from reality and help me get immersed.

Oh, I get so much inspiration from music. It really depends on what I’m writing. If I’m writing a more action oriented scene, I’m usually listening to rock music. If it’s something more futuristic, it’s usually electronic or dubstep. Lately, I’ve been really inspired by classical music. It’s just so melodic and whimsical. My current favourite album is Inscape by Alexandra Stréliski. 🥰

A fine choice, Nightwish. A friend got me into that symphonic rock (metal?) band, and I very much enjoy some of their songs.

I am listening to Inscape and am quite impressed with the pianist! She has a lot of talent.

i actually have playlists for most of my muses! so if im listening to music while writing, it's probably one of those ^^
other times i might just listen to one of my regular playlists lol which is mostly a mix of emo and alt stuff ;w;

I usually don't listen to music at all while writing because background noise annoys me.
Although sometimes, when I'm writing a fandom character, I listen to songs from that fandom. Like that character's theme or just general soundtrack. It helps me to get inspired.

I’m glad! I couldn’t agree more. She’s really great! I came across her by going through the Youtube rabbit hole of music. I was actually looking for more contemporary classical artists. My friend suggested Yiruma and so I just followed the classical piano side of Youtube. I hope she’ll continue and create more original songs and melodies.

My playlist varies greatly depending on the roleplay. But one thing is true: I rarely listen to anything other than videogame music. I've been a gamer since I was a kid, and I've never gotten much of a taste for more typical music. Any song with lyrics distracts me from my writing, and besides, videogame music is made to be enjoyable while being played in the background, so it doesn't distract you from your focus on what you're doing. It's made to enhance an experience that requires focus in itself. So it's the perfect background music for me.

Now, over the years I've tried many videogames with awesome soundtracks. Some of the videogame franchises I like to listen the most to nowadays are:

-Sonic the Hedgehog
-Kirby
-Plants vs Zombies
-Pokemon
-Harvest Moon
-Mega Man
-Them Fightin' Herds

And many more. But I like to choose soundtracks depending on the scene I'm writing. For a more action-packed scene like superheroes or fighting scenes, I naturally pick something that goes along with that. Sometimes it's according to the setting, so if a scene is taking place in the winter, I look for the music of an ice-themed level. I sometimes associate some of my characters with certain themes from videogames.

For some of the older games, if you don't want 8-bit music, you can simply look for remixes of your favorite videogame music. Youtube has a lot of talented people who make beautiful remixes of classic videogame themes, that can bring your favorite theme from a classic retro videogame from the 80s or the 90s to a whole new level of awesomeness. I recommend you look up the music you like from different videogames, and see if any work for you.

If you don't know what franchise to look towards, I recommend looking for stuff like "Nintendo Calm Music" or "Happy Nintendo Videogame Music". You'll find long videos that have a large playlist of different themes from different videogames. Most will offer time stamps for each music in the video, so check them out, see which ones you like, and explore the music from those games. I assure you you'll find a lot of music you love!

I don't only use these for roleplaying, by the way. I like to listen to them for whenever I'm on my PC, whether I'm researching stuff online, doing my own creative writing, doing some work on the PC, or just about anything other than watching youtube videos or gaming.

well, depends on what character im writing and whats the mood or their ts, but this is my current one woop

For me it's kinda just the same thing as the rest of the day;
either a singular song, or specific sections of my 144 song custom spotify playlist

I love listening to loud music, indie rock, punk and some pop music because I feel very swag and powerful. Or maybe slowed music because I'm a baddie. B)

This one is IMMACULATE

i usually find it too distracting to have something playing while i'm writing but every once in a while i'll put on something instrumental (film or video game soundtracks, orchestral covers, etc. that suit the mood). predictably there's a lot of hans zimmer, some vitamin string quartet and similar groups, clint mansell & sam hulick, ramin djawadi and trevor morris. i listen to lyrical stuff when planning or brainstorming but i end up mixing my words if listening and writing at the same time.

Oooo man. :) For me, I am all about getting into the zone of the character I'm playing, the universe, etc. So looking up those hour-long ambiance tracks on YouTube is a must. Like if I'm doing a Pirates of the Caribbean roleplay, you BET I have the soundtrack ambiance of the softer orchestral moments from the movies playing in the background.

If music, it needs to be instrumental, otherwise I'll get too distracted with the words. Game background music (instead of fight/boss music) is often good, as it's designed to be atmospheric but not distracting. Usually I default to Hollow Knight (either "Queen's Gardens" or "City of Tears") or any track from the Talos Principle, though "When in Rome" is so calm and desolate.
Soft piano/harp, no percussion, repetitive, can be looped... relaxing. Good for focusing.

Or I'll have a soundscape generator going. Current favourite is called "Tanker at Sea", with the waves, cabin noise, rain and faint radio.
Though I'm not writing about anything sea-based right now... if I were clever I'd have something more thematic, but I guess I just like having the silence filled :v

World of Warcraft music for sure. I listen to it when I'm basically doing anything whether it be RPing, writing my book, doing homework, even at work sometimes. Nothing beats it for me, I just love the theatrical fantasy sound.
