plot.
Every second you exist is another moment lost in time. However, not everyone loses that time. Timekeepers—or keepers for short—are a group of people who work underneath father time himself to improve the world at large. Their goal? They're considered a last resort... the ones who have to re-write history to improve the world from the awful wasteland that is the future. As for how they're chosen, it's not really stated explicitly. Father time has mentioned that its because they've played a part in an event that impacted the future. Forcing them out of their original timeline left an impact. For the better is the term typically left unsaid. So, with a team of morally grey members, the timekeepers are changing the world—one moment at a time.

This roleplay is meant to be a group of characters who travel through time to different places in the world to stop or encourage an event to happen. Their main initiative? To finish their mission without getting caught or compromised. There is only so many times Father time is capable of taking multiple people to a certain time frame. After one or two attempts, they must return back to the base to either improve the plan or continue on to their next mission without re-doing their failed mission. In which case, the whole timeline of the world can be rewritten and fall further into chaos in the future.

setting.
This roleplay will be set mostly at the time palace of Father Time. This is the part of the universe that is reserved for him to dwell in. It was no surprise that when he created the concept of the timekeepers, he made adjustments to allow them to live alongside him. Each member has their own living space and also their own office. There are several conjoined offices on the same level that serves as a meeting place. It is used frequently by the members. Besides from being a place to socialize, it is also a crucial part of their operations.

The ticking of a clock could be heard throughout the palace. Although it was the background noise that followed them every moment of the day, it still caused Mei to wake up earlier than she had intended. Hazily opening her eyes, she slowly blinked until she was lazily staring at the far wall.

A sliver of sunlight was creeping through the blinds, cascading over her carpeted floor to fall over her dark satin covers. Groaning to herself, she intended to roll over to fall back asleep. That plan was quickly dashed whenever the clock finally struck seven AM.

It was with little ceremony that it began to chime.

Groaning louder in response, she waited until the seven chimes had passed. With the last note hanging in the air, she peeked out of the covers. Black hair stuck up in all directions as she got to her feet, brows furrowed. She trudged over to her curtains, shutting her eyes before she pulled them open. Frowning at the sunlight permeating behind her closed lids, she turned and made her way to the bathroom.

Her morning routine commenced with little fanfare.

After washing her face and brushing her teeth, she got dressed for the day. She moved to grab her time traveler device, slipping the harness around her thigh. She checked the time on the clock face, a little relieved to see that it was a long way before eight o'clock.

Leaving the room, she made her way down the long hallway towards the spiraling stairs. The pretty golden banister gleamed in the morning light as she descended. Pausing in her movements, she glanced up the staircase. It spanned up to eight levels, connected to different levels of the castle. She didn't notice any movement from any of the other members. With a sigh, she continued on her trek to the kitchen.

It took her several minutes to get to her destination.

She was hellbent as she went about setting up the coffee machine for its first brew of the day.

The routine was a familiar one.

Although Mei Ling wasn't considered the 'friendliest' of the timekeepers (alright, she was one of most critical people she had ever met—with a mean streak to boot), she was still kind enough to make the coffee for anyone who drank it. The caffeine was a small saving grace with all the work she—and the rest—had to do that day.

Vincent woke with a start in a puddle of his own saliva. His alarm was beeping incessantly after having been silenced several times during the earlier morning. He clumsily reached over to the nightstand to turn it off, his slender fingers fumbling with the device as the recoil-worthy sound continued. In his desperation he hit the top of the alarm. Ah, yes. Finally. Silence. Regarding the evil little time box with distaste, Vincent Pham pulled an itchy sweater over his head, zipped up his pants and headed out the door. A twinge of both excitement and regret nagged at his brain, although breakfast was at the forefront of his mind. One more day to go until the mission. He was still waiting for his pre-mission confidence to swell, but it wasn't quite able to push through the cobwebs of self-doubt. Would he be ready? Oh, Hell. Pancakes first, anxiety later. He picked at the lint in his jacket pocket absently, approaching the stairs. Monochrome marble gleamed all the way down the platform. Veins of black leaked through the pristine white like cavities, and Vincent wondered who cleaned the floors. None of them ever had cleaning duty, as far as he was concerned. Maybe it was just something he'd been skipping, and the others were too peeved at his behaviors to tell him it was his turn to play janitor.

The yawning stairwell dawned on Vincent before he had much time to examine the sparkling condition of the tiles. It was all quite fanciful and dandy, he thought. If Father Time had so much experience with, well, time, why did he build a castle? Too many levels, too many stairs, and way too much walking for his tastes. It seemed like an old-fashioned sentimentality had come over their boss in the process of building his elegant home. Perhaps it was a little charming. Outside the window, fog had settled like cigarette smoke on the glistening indigo water. It crept up the sides of the stone bricks, devouring them in a vague haze. It felt like a fairytale. Yeah. Charming was the right word after all. The concoction of coffee and baked goods emanating from the kitchen sent him into a ravenous state. To Tartarus with the stairs! He slid down the final railing with a childlike glee, perhaps having watched one too many American movies involving small children on Christmas day.

Humming eagerly, he pranced over to the teabags, paying little mind to Mei Ling. He cast a nonchalant sidelong glance at the coffee maker, waiting for his tea to start hissing like a wayward cat in its kettle. She was a coffee drinker, huh? Vincent found coffee rather revolting. It seemed like a grown-up drink. A Mei Ling drink. Her severe facial features caught him a little off-guard, especially at this early hour. Yikes, maybe the coffee was necessary. "Hey hey, Mei Mei," he greeted her with a cheerful bump of the elbow, alerting her of his presence.

"How'd ya sleep? Are you excited for tomorrow?"

He casually tossed the questions up in the air, already anticipating her searing answers. His voice was quick and light, with an almost rhapsodic rhythm. It was pancake time.

Sabine sat up, rubbing her sleep-crusted eyes. She had left the curtains open last night; warm sunlight flooding the room as a natural alarm clock. She stared at the light beams, furrowing her brow. Was it the actual sun from Earth? Or just a facsimile made by Father Time to comfort the Timekeepers?

She shook her head. It wasn’t important. What was important was that she get up. She threw back her soft cotton bedsheets and slid from the bed, slipping her feet into a pair of house slippers.

She made for the bathroom, her nightgown swaying around her legs. She hadn’t made the switch to pajamas yet. She quickly washed her face and brushed her teeth, staring at herself in the mirror.

When she was brought to the time palace for the first time, she had cut her hair with a frenzied hysteria. She liked the symbolism: cutting herself from her past. It was easier too, no longer having to carefully curl her hair around strips of paper for the perfect hair style.

She grabbed a wooden comb left on the sink counter for her, ran it through heir choppy hair, once, twice, before tossing back down to get dressed.

The closet had a large bounty of clothes of all kinds. Sabine hadn't had the confidence to wear trousers like Mei Ling but it was going to be her first assignment. Better to get used to it now rather than later.

She chose a fairly modest pair of trousers, dark brown and loose about her legs, and a loose long sleeved white shirt . Taking a page from Mei Ling's book, she wore a pair of boots, strangely already conformed to the curves of her feet. Father Time had given her several devices. She took the device and slid it into a pocket.

She poked her head out of her bedroom door, glancing around. No one was in the hall. She stepped out, hesitantly, heading for the kitchen.

A figure dressed in black was staring at the coffee machine with intense focus. Ah, Mei Ling was up. Next to her was a skinny young man who she had never seen before.

"Good morning, Mei Ling," Sabine said, looking around the bright and open kitchen. "And, er, I don't believe I've made your acquaintance."

Sukomi was already awake before the scheduled time, already dressed and prepared for the day as well. Downstairs in one of the training areas, Sukomi stood in the center of the room. In her hands was a wooden training katana, held in front of her in a ready position. Holographic enemies surrounded her, wielding swords of their own. Seconds passed as everything was still, until the holograms began to move towards Sukomi. With quick and precise movements, she made quick work of the holograms, blocking and counter-attacking. It was only minutes until the last enemy was destroyed, leaving the room empty except for her. She glanced at the clock in the room, noticing the time. She found it a little ironic that for someone who could travel through time, she still had to follow a linear schedule. But she didn't question it.

Sukomi walked to the exit, picking up her travelling device and held it one hand. She didn't want to put it on just yet.

As she walked, her footsteps echoed throughout the hallway. When Sukomi first arrived to this place, she always thought it was so big for just the handful of people living here. Plus, with all the new technologies and advancements, it took a while for Sukomi to adjust. By now she knew how to operate most of the devices in the palace, as well as the training room. Thankfully, there were others who were more familiar with them so she usually left it to the others to operate them.

As she rounded the corner and walked towards the kitchen, she noticed that others were awake now. There was her counterpart, Mei Huang. She was a part of the leadership within their organization like Sukomi. There was a third, but it didnt seem they were awake yet. There were two others. If she remembered correctly, their names were Vincent and Sabine. Sabine was a newer member, while Vincent had been around for a while.

Before stepping into the kitchen area, Sukomi bowed slightly, putting her training sword in a corner of the room and loosely fitting her device harness, the strap going across her chest from her left shoulder and down to her right hip. Approaching the other three in the room, she quietly cleared her throat to make her presence known.

"Good morning."

» Hugo Steele
Hugo’s eyes slowly fluttered open through an unclear haze and semi-consciousness. Not to the sound of an alarm, but to the sound of wind chimes near the window his room. They were more simplistic in design but having them in his room reminded him of the many adventures he’d been on – the wind-chimes themselves being a ‘souvenir’ he grabbed (okay, he stole them off of that one bastard that nearly shot 'phonse - sue him).

Rather than head downstairs after washing his face and brushing his teeth, he went straight for a cigarette. It was a habit that he had yet to kick after all these years. Drinking coffee like the others wasn’t really for him, it left a bitter taste on his tongue and felt foreign to him. The only other beverage which he remembers drinking in his boyhood were tea and the occasional beer.

He opened the balcony attached to his room and went there the to smoke, only interrupted by needing to flick bits off at the ash tray he had sitting on his table. His eyes slowly made their way over to the little clock on the foot of his balcony. Seven-fifteen. It was weird, the clocks around the place were a constant reminder to his link with time. He wanted to smash them all.

He then groaned letting his head rest on the wall behind where he was standing. He really didn’t want to do anything today. He went back into his room before getting full dressed. A more simplistic version of his everyday apparel. A loose white shirt, black trousers and black dress shoes followed with his travel device strapped on to his bicep underneath his shirt.

He wasn’t really in any type of rush to get to the kitchen, allowing himself to take his sweet time. The endless hallways and loops around the building were ever annoying to the average person without much patience. And Hugo was definitely one of those people. But today it almost felt like a saving grace in preserving him time to get to the kitchen. He didn’t really need to hear the accumulation of loud voices during the night.

However, tranquility didn't last forever. Once he’d manage to reach the kitchen, past the endless white corridors and staircases, he noticed the movement of people already there. He always wondered how the hell people managed to get there so quickly. Usually it was always Mei there, bright and early. And it seemed like she was the first one there too, being the only one actually stuck into a task unlike the others who were trying to make idle chatter.

Of the people there, he was familiar with two out of the four people. Mei and Sukomi were familiar faces. And whilst he knew who Vincent was, he couldn’t necessarily say that he was familiar. And then there was one of the new recruits – Sabine. Oh, to be so vulnerable and naïve. Hugo was sure that would fade with time.

"Sukomi, Mei" he said whilst nodding at the two women with acknowledgment, a form of greeting in his eyes as he walked towards the kettle before pouring water into it. He looked back at Sukomi before asking "Tea?" with an eyebrow raised. He then continued, "And if you're going to ask for any of that fancy jasmine tea bullshit then forget it and make your own."

  • Finish him.
"Please. We can be civil about this-"
Civility's got nothing to do with it.
    Finish him.
A warning shot. Did he fire it? No, it was the Juptian. Cano and his shiny, new bionic arsenal arm from last month's job. Show-off.
    The credit's fake. Finish him.
    We'd be making orphans.
They're only bloody Terrans, came the automatic answer.
How rich. So are you, bastard.
    Ma would be so proud.
    Now, fin---

    "--ish him!"
Hungover eyes slowly opened. The expectant figures of Scorpion and the defeated stance of Baraka greeted Leon, ready for that final click of the controller that they'd been waiting for since midnight. Leon rubbed the back of his neck, feeling the tension release as he straightened from the awkward position sleep had decided to take him in. Of course the two-century old ancestor of Smart Link holograph screens did not close by itself. The increasing whirring of the video game processor prompted Leon to push away the blankets and turn the game off, slipping the disc back into it's casing. The game and it's companions were souvenirs and guilty pleasures of Leon's. The designs were simplistic and banal by any Neo-Galax's standards, but the Martian found a certain comfort in it. Plus, they were far less addictive than the Augmented Virtual Reality brainwash chips bullshit cranked out during his time. At least, that's what he's been telling himself the past week since he acquired his newest addition, Mortal Kombat 9...

Leon stood up amidst three days' worth of 1960's classic Double Diamond beer, 1950's Dr. Pepper soda and bags of 1970's Ruffle chips. As usual, he debated the very pleasant idea of tidying it all up, especially since this was the last day before mission call, but it was unfortunately interrupted by the grumbling of a ravenous stomach. A tough call, but Leon was won over by the fact that he'd be that much more productive once he'd had some grub. Provided Sarah wouldn't have his hide by then, of course.

And so, his course was decided. A quick shower, shave and spritz of Martian Vulcan cologne later, Leon was out of his quarters and heading down the spiraling staircase, shirt in hand as he tied his unruly navy blue hair back into it's trademark ponytail. The grand halls of Father Time's castle labyrinth greeted him with all the warmth of an old friend, helped along by the delicious, familiar smell of coffee. As usual, he was one of the last to arrive to the kitchens, just barely managing to pull the shirt over the rest of his body as he entered.

The cold yet equally captivating figure of his favorite second-in-command was the first to draw the Martian's attention. Mei Ling was residing over her routinely spot next to the coffee machine to get the first brew of the day started. Next to her stood Leon's young Padawan Vince, who seemed equally as enthusiastic for the prospect of breakfast as his mentor figure was.
Nevertheless, it was a new presence, a green thumb sorely sticking out of this typical scene that caught the Martian's eye the most. She was a slight thing, barely reaching his shoulder as he approached her, a good-natured spark in his crimson-red eyes.
"Vincent Pham," he spoke up behind her, a fading yet still noticeable Martian lilt in his accent. "Good lad, with a decent head on his shoulders and quick on his feet. He'll show you the ropes." He passed the new recruit and placed himself beside his protege, an amicable arm on the younger man's shoulder. He threw a wink back towards the newcomer, his Martian vernacular emerging to the surface as his voice jokingly lowered. "If the hero's your type, Vince here is your Terraman."

Just then, a quiet clearing of the throat marked the entrance of yet another familiar face.
"Good morning," Leon greeted his superior, casting a quick eye towards the gear Sukomi had left in the corner, reminiscent of her daily early morning workout. He turned towards the cabinets, grabbing a plate as a dry smile appeared on his face. "Can't say the same for those holograms though, hm?"

Before the Martian could hear Sukomi's less-than-impressed response, everyone's favorite ray of sunshine had entered the room, his features, as always, creased into a constipated expression of high-strung pessimism. The youth went straight for the kettle, barely managing his greetings before his foul mouth came into play.
"Don't mind Hugo over there," Leon called over his shoulder to the new recruit as he plated himself a heaping pile of sausage and egg. "Father Time himself still can't figure out what went wrong with that one."

The screen in front of Alistair Thomson radiated a bright blue glow as he scrolled through the files from their past mission. Due to his understanding of computers, he was often tasked with evaluating the information for Father Time. He sighed for the tenth time that morning, glancing towards the clock.

He had woken up earlier than intended with a urge to re-evaluate his mission notes. So, he had sat in one of the offices with his glasses and an ash tray slowly filling with the butts of cigarettes.

Alistair sighed after he finished typing his analysis. Groaning as he stretched, he slumped into his chair before closing the files and booting the system down. He glanced over to his ash tray, only feeling a little guilty as he left it in favor of finding something to drink.

Walking down the luxurious staircase, he wasn't surprised to hear a chorus of voices in the kitchen already. Everyone had a schedule—it was only naturally that they had a tenancy to follow it.

He slipped into the kitchen with his hands in his pockets, glancing over the rest of the members already gathered there. His eyes lit up as he noticed Mei Ling holding a cup of coffee. There was a moment of triumph that filled him as he plucked the cup from her fingers.

Without even looking back, she grasped the cup in one hand while her other hand moved to punch him in the gut.

He let out a winded noise, slumping over to grab at his knee.

"I was just messing around!" He huffed, giving the woman puppy dog eyes once he had caught his breath and straightened back up.

Her expression didn't waver as she glared over the rim of her cup, eyeing him as she drank.

Wheeling around to face the other second-in-command, he asked, "Sukomi, isn't there rules for things like this? Mei isn't allowed to hit me, is she?"

It didnt take long for the kitchen to become lively. But it was wake-up time after all, so Sukomi expected everyone else to arrive shortly.

As she walked up to the kitchen counter where Mei was, Sukomi's attention was called by Hugo, one of the more older members. He was a good person all around, though she didn't really know him as a person. The most interactions she's had with him was during missions where every now and then, she had to deal with his...'rebellious' attitude. That in itself was a pain.

Sukomi gave him a small nod, accepting his tea offer. While she did indeed prefer her own blend, she wasn't too picky about it. If it ended up tasting worse than she thought, she'd just put up with it. While she waited, her attention was called once more when Leonidas returned her morning greeting. While she found his follow-up quip about the holograms amusing, her facial expression didnt show it. She just awkwardly nodded in response.

"I suppose so."

In the corner of her eye, she caught movement as one of the older members, Alistair, walked into the kitchen area. He was a nice person, a lot more tolerable too in some cases. She watched as he approached Mei, then out of no where, picked out her coffee cup. What happened next came to no surprise for Sukomi as she watched Mei punch Alistair. She simply watched as Alistair doubled over, then turned to her asking to take his side in the matter. Sukomi's eyes moved to look at Mei, who she could tell was not exactly amused. Her gaze moved back to Alistair, giving him a black expression.

"No, there isn't any such rule. However, given the circumstances, I believe that was justified."

Sabine looked at the blue-haired man speaking to her and tried to hide her surprise. She had never never seen blue hair or heard of his accent before. She glanced at the shorter man before her, Vincent, was it?

“It’s a pleasure to make your acquaintance,” she said, instinctively starting to curtsy before realizing she was wearing trousers, not a skirt. She straightened and, ignoring her incoming flush, just nodded at Vincent and the blue-haired man, turning towards the pantry.

In the meantime, the kitchen had become busy, no doubt other members arriving to break their fast. From what Sabine could tell, there weren't any servants. She bit her lip. She didn't know how to cook. Well, a good start would be tea. Strong tea.

She'd received a cursory tour of the palace, including the kitchens, and after struggling to remember where the wealth of teas and coffees were, she found it in a very well organized pull out drawer. She frowned at the numerous labeled jars for a moment and then grabbed the English Breakfast blend. Father Time had made her a cup with a very interesting tea bag but loose leaf was better.

While she was waiting for her tea to steep, Sabine watched a red-haired man swooped in and attempted to take Mei Ling's coffee which was swiftly intercepted by a punch to the gut. Her eyes widened at the violence so early in the morning. Still, she added a splash of milk and a spoon of sugar to her cup and squirreled it away to the large table across the kitchen, taking a seat near one of the corners and curling around her tea.

Sarah G. Hakett

On the morning before the mission, Sarah woke up in a similar way to every other day. Still, in her sheets, dull eyes and gaze, paralyzed, waiting for an alarm to wake her. The sun warmed the glass on her open window. Light poured through silk curtains that swirled over the wind every so often. Smells of the freshwater lake filled the room. Birds sang outside from the rustling trees. But Sarah couldn't feel it, she couldn't hear it, and she didn't see it. She only focused on an uncouth amount of butterflies, collecting one by one, above her on a chandelier. Like, a dark, purple kaleidoscope invading her vision of an otherwise clean white ceiling. They stared her down, waiting, but Sarah didn't shout or struggle. She just lay in her sheets, unfeeling, unmoving, waiting for her alarm to wake her.

As usual, Sarah was washed, fully dressed, and ready to eat by 7 A.M. Why waking from sleep paralysis was so straining, she'd never know. She took a deep breath in, closed the closet doors, then out as she marched over to her mattress. Sarah halted near the edge of her bedding with arms crossed, her brows furrowed. She had one thin sheet and a flat pillow she slept with every night. Even if it was bad for her back, other pillows seemed to make the pain worse. It was tidy every morning, even after a night of rest, almost like Sarah didn't move an inch from the moment she fell asleep to the moment she woke. The only crease came from her getting up. Starring at the display could almost disturb her.

Sarah fanned and straightened her sheet and smoothed her palm over it. She went to sit down in the sun-warmed spot beneath her window. Sarah usually sat down to collect her thoughts. It would be the final time she could before she started the day, left to the cold empty hall, and greeted the people. Either way, breakfast was already on her mind. She'd have eggs with mushrooms, strawberries, a pair of golden brown toast covered in butter, and one cup of milk. Sarah found herself smiling over it while she stared blankly at the outside. It could bring a tear to her eye, how good the food she could make turned out. Nothing could ruin the pure glee she had just from eating breakfast.

Sarah hugged her shoulders as she walked out the door, then crept down the corridor until she reached the stairwell. With every step she trotted downward, her arms felt warmer, and it became abundantly clear that she wouldn't be alone making breakfast, which was okay. It wasn't horrible if accompanied while cooking. She could handle mostly everyone, even people like Vincent and Hugo. Sarah just hoped that Leonidas wouldn't be there. She could almost swear that he made it his mission to give her a headache every morning. Just thinking about it made her groan, so to distract herself, Sarah focused on the smells emitting in the air. The scent of fresh-brewed coffee and tea. Thinking about it got a scoff out of her, which was Sarah's form of laughing at the things she didn't fully understand. Hot drinks were practical, she'd admit, especially during the cold early morning, but Sarah never became keen on them even with all the sweeteners or modifiers you could add.

When she finally got to the kitchen, she stopped right before the entryway and closed her eyes. She already smelled eggs, felt cold strawberries in her hands, and her knife slicing through a stick of butter. Sarah turned into the kitchen, and guess what, Leonidas was there. Yippie. She decided to walk right past him and get straight to the point. She wanted a pleasant morning now and found that a simple greeting to the crowd would her do right by them. "Good morning, everyone... And Leonidas." Sarah started to open the cabinets and drawers, collecting her cooking supplies.
