Experiences Whats making you angry today? Rp pet peeves

Kazami42 Kazami42 I-I mean, I suppose when you put it that way, it sort of makes sense...

But honestly, you make a VERY GOOD POINT! I'd be more concerned about powers being OP, personality not being flushed out, posting schedules/regularly (I suspect I have a rather unpopular opinion on those, so I'd rather not delve into it, but I hope we can both agree it's still more important than a faceclaim in an RP! Good heavens!) and what have you...

Also, honestly! The way you use faceclaims?

Sure, alright, it would take a veteran and competent writer to pull it off the way you do, I'm sure, but to AUTOMATICALLY LIMIT THAT? Not even giving anyone a chance?

How does anyone NOT SEE that hurts their cause to gather more players for their RP?

That's like saying someone HAS TO HAVE A CERTAIN POSTING STYLE or something!

Also that: Not only do the severe restrictions make it hard to take the RP seriously, but good luck keeping INTEREST IN such a limiting RP! :xFeek:

Pretty much par for the course. I prefer online life, so I could care less about how often to post, let alone how much. Yet able to understand others needs and to adapt the system for the like minded that may fall behind by life. But literally anything is more important than a faceclaim or lack thereof. It's like "Alright lads, we got one guy with a 90 rehashed copy paste bio, one other with God's tears that spawns mechahitler, and we have this one that fits. Uhh, hermaphroditic social butterfly with anger management issues, that's outcasted for their differences... Cool. Isn't into magica or anything bigger than a dagger. Cool let's just do some fina- *GAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSP* OH LAWRDY LAWRD, THEY GOT DEM HOOMANZ IN THEM THERE HILLS. WAKAWAKAWAKA, SMITE SMITE SMITE". Kek.

The extremists I like laughing at. They tend to make Alex Jones look calm and collected. "They be puttin' faceclaims that turn the RP dryer than a cryer" but I think the real problem for CSes are the guys that like to hit people hard if they don't have, can't do, or don't have "on par" bbcode. They get a deservingly higher rep for being rubbish. Now I drag these elitist punks in because of this:

Not all, but a number get as irky with physical appearances too, and God forbid if they aren't surrounded by a 100 layers of code challenge. On another site, I used to be spiteful to those types, you know the stuff. Succeed getting into the story, one up the OP, have my character have exaggerated similarities, but can have likeable qualities. Most characters ended up being aggressive fashionistas, with random bouts of friendliness, before suddenly being a loud militant aristocrat to a "bad idea" for anything. Though I don't think veterancy has anything to do with how one writes a nation, faction, or character well. It merely helps refine one's existing and varied skill. Rarely does it go into a 180 to a new direction. That is more so reinforced by investment in the then and now, as well as observing others, than how many RPs they're in. But anyway:

Spite is one hell of a tool.

I don't think we could be more in agreement: Anything in extremity is ludicrous!

I truly couldn't wrap my head around how anyone could be like that until our talk... Though I'm disappointed to say it doesn't bring me much more faith in RPers, though I'll try not to scorn the many for the faults of the few, naturally.

I can totally understand spiting them, too. It's completely not my thing (for various reasons I'd rather not delve into...) but , well... Honestly, you attract what you exude. If you're going to ignore the OPer and Ghoster but completely harp on someone for a faceclaim then... honestly... what did you expect? That they're going to take that laying down? That others aren't going to see that? Or see it and agree with you?

I should certainly hope the RPer being harped on for the faceclaim has more self-respect than that.

Admittedly, I don't exactly hold myself in a high regard, either, but I don't put myself into situations where the unfair treatment is blatant anymore.

Should they be spiteful? No, absolutely not.
Will they be? Treat your RPers like dirt and you better believe they will, regardless.

I may get some unfitting RACES not flying (like say, for example, a dark-elf in a setting where there are simply no dark elves in general, and being the "last of its kind" is not a part of the RP Plot/ character arc), and that may mean they can't describe their character as having elf-like physical traits, but having an unfitting face-claim/description is a completely different ballpark than harping on someone FOR HAVING it in general.

And don't get me started on BBC Code elitists.

I love BBC Code. I wish I could code beautiful posts on my own instead of rely on the kindness of strangers for it... But that being said...

How some people scorn or outright reject those who don't have it or don't baffles me.

If it's unreadable on a phone, just tell them you can't read it mobile and if they might get a new one or tweak the old one. If your "picture perfect" RP has nearly everyone posting in BBC Code but one guy or two who write competently well and regularly that contribute just fine to the plot and character arcs, you best build a bridge and get over it. I'd like to think I post moderately well with just coloring dialogue. I had a friend who coded TWO SENTENCES (he was inexperienced back then). The BBC code does not MAKE the post, just is the "cherry on top."

I wish people kept their priorities in check: The "meat" of the post is what matters.

I'm getting the vibe you've ran into way too much of these types for your liking, and I'm really sorry to hear that. I'm getting frustrated just thinking about this and I personally have barely SEEN IT, let alone experience it!

...Oh hey, on the subject of what's making me angry today: People like the ones we're discussing.

Now, no shade or tea... and I'm not calling ANYONE OUT... but if you recognize you have these tendencies I HIGHLY SUGGEST you re-evaluate your priorities, because other RPers might not take that laying down! :ghostxnx:

Yeah, and on the list they're pretty bad. But I wouldn't exactly say the worst. For an example, I've stated, maybe repeated this, on this and other threads. It's only happened once but I'll hyper summarize it: on a site we nickname SB, there was a weird person. They saw one guy make up the first nation builder on site, and we all rebooted for the concept. But they took command for a genreless RP. Essentially, they were a hardcore lore fan of fallout, and despite all factions regardless of origin, IE three by the end were TES, some were fallout, one metro one, etc. Because it followed long after an apocalypse so we could do anything, they felt compelled to curb it. They demonized me, a few others, and the site having so little of a rp community, it effectively meant they initially got the lot on me. Yada yada. Then I dealt with the bitch for a few years before we got here from discord. Then in 2018 they fucked off.

I still consider that worse in my case and keep bringing it up, because if I had other options it might not of been worse than previously discussed troublemakers. I was already writing for my own thing just to get past life, and got into roleplaying to a more consistent extent by that point and needed it. And them doing that made me stop writing my story, my RPing spiteful, and generally I didn't quite be right. My mindset was like a pessimistic nihilist and I expected coming here would just be the same. But I actually was met positively. While most of my friends left somewhere, I stayed here because they still have that pathetic parasite lunching off them. I slowly grew into a more positive but still uncaring mindset. Due to the initial positivity and lack of crazy shit in life and on this site more recently, I usually go to threads where people introduce themselves, and try providing that level of positivity to others. Regardless of if they need the hope, or if they already are mentally fine and just saying hello.

The story if you bother looking for it is arguably worse than this summary in my mind at least, but there you go. This is why I tend to have a higher tolerance of other douchebags, but I can still complain about them if I really want to. My mindset didn't fully recover until I started using all the vent threads on the site. But I've gotten it all out. I like to interact with others, even without my computer and not RPing currently, because I generally have nothing else to do and otherwise everything's boring. After feeling great of venting, it passed a while later. When that passed, I felt a bit empty as I had nothing to hold on to and think or feel about, so I decided to make up things to give myself something to do until I find something here or in reality to replace it with, I get rid of that feeling by doing random stuff regardless of how lasting it is. I consider that meaningful, even if it's more akin to a 3 minute shitpost. I view meaning as simplistic, aka "it's meaningful if you do it." Rather than someone else who may think meaning as entertaining at least five babillion people in one session. It sounds hyper cringy but I don't think it's that bad. Though I might just be so used to it that even that I shrug off and just move on lol. Overall when I ain't got something to do, I'm just bored and never go outside so I might just friendly-shitpost on someone's thread to start a convo.

Though to contribute to the thread further since some might look at this and somehow think it derailing:

Dunno if I said it before, but I'm cool with a repeat one final time. I despise it when you're busy doing a lot of stuff but you can still RP, then when you organize your team it gets reorganized because the playerbase trusts veteran community players more and I believed that too. Then the guy helping you with mechanics suddenly has a personality change, the mod squad is incompetent, and the mech guy defaults the RP to "unknowned" and threatening to take over it by posting the IC first, so your large idea has to be rushed and dumbed down to get it out first while juggling fifty things, they start going against your word removing shit from people despite approving them all myself and fighting to keep it, and communications die between everyone. Your one mod has effectively abandoned but stays for observing you, and the other starts planning throwing things in the initial pages like revolution that literally nobody can handle yet that gets shot down immediately, and I revert the team back to competent users, [which I had initially, and was observing carefully to see if they'd be good mods. They were, and I kept plotting the RP with them even as they got "replaced" on the server. One nobody liked purely by "THEY AINT BEEN HERE LONG LIKE US", the other one that knew magic properly got forsaken by my community because at the time they were all shady needy bastards I can't trust.]

By that point I had slightly more free time. I proved the community that their ideals were faulty crap, and let those that deserved it to stay in the other guy's oppression while I fixed the RP. After a backup draft, I kicked his mental breakdown looking powerhungry ass out, and gave the ultimatum to the other guy that was useless. I recreated all the mechanics myself, redrew the map, and nobody talked back to my decisions anymore. Apparently, having more experience and done variations of mod and RP styles meant nothing to the brats. Most of the time until that rp, I was usually always a normal player. One time they wanted to do two RPs at the same time, thought other players would boost them alive. I literally explained to them that the same person, writing the same length posts, active on both RPs, would leave less content and burn them out. They didn't listen, what I said happened. Another one didn't like overviews, expected themselves to enforce decisions, and expected nobody would exploit the lack of info to spawn ghost armies and all. I kept fighting until they said I could just use something unrelated, the RP died before the spawnening happened. They thought they could trust a known ghoster with a important role, multiple of us said no, the lazy ghoster powergamed, refused to post, and officially stayed in the RP but in reality they stopped looking at the thread and let it die. Same guy gets better tech than those proven to limit and balance themselves, same thing happened. They thought other people were better mods, and I did what I always did to make them learn. I did it, let go while I prepped, and showed them that they are too chaotic to be trusted in mod decisions. Did this work? Yes. I was taken more seriously. But my RP died and I temporarily got depressed due to how important the original non-adaption material was to me.

Every time I was made a mod of any type for my community's RPs on RPN, I resolved problems mostly quickly as well as thoroughly, I stopped tech shenanigans, and unlike them, I read through entire posts and CSes. In WoT, there was a fight that lasted over around a month. Out of 4-5 mods, I'm only one that fixed Chennai in around two days. With this community when it still existed, that was considered an achievement.

This by technicality, is two stories. The summarized mod thing at the end, and the other one. The morals being: don't let someone incompetent or even useless be any mod unless to prove a point. [Which despite like three whole RPs my mod created and quickly abandoned, one case unexpectedly throwing all his responsibility on me when I couldn't do it. Apparently these guys forgot about those examples.] And the second one is, if you start a small fun RP which isn't meant for massive and 24/7 constant activity and some guy tries dominating it, smite them. That guy was my first fault on RPN, but I can't be entirely blamed since it wasn't a slow and preventable circumstance. They were extremely helpful and trustful prior, then suddenly acted as if they got possessed, started making up shit to equate us as "community bad", and then fanatically believing things they thought up without bothering to look it up and confirm it. IE assuming everyone in one old RP was a self insert with no care to any kind of story, interaction or world/universe based, and without even going to see if it was true, apparently the Divine hath spoken to make it a fact. >_>.

On RPN, I've actually experienced very little personally of bad events or players, but when it does appear, it's quite the spectacle as well as learning experience. It helps identify and kick those losers out before they embed their claws too deep. I of course don't count all actions in a single RP as being a larger scale than it really is. Only three RPs out of like seven or more RPs I've ever been in was bad, and every single one but two of those had the same players in it. Hardly capable of being able to compare anything to other communities on RPN. Of which there's only one other I know of. So far it seems players sort of like wolf projects, rather than form a group of friends that also RP everywhere together. That other community probably does better, I sorta slowly and systematically exterminated my own. Though I might still use the server in the future for another one. A shame really, quite a few people I liked on there...

Of course with everything above being summarized to varying extents in comparison to more detailed versions, it's probably bound to be different seeming or flawed than other times I've mentioned it. But I don't enjoy repeating myself too much.

The whole "heart is an awesome power" trope. Don't get me wrong, I like the basic idea of the trope (which is a weak power that can be really useful when used in an creative way.

But I have two main issues with it's execution in roleplays. 1) The power is never actually weak in the first place. It's always something really broken with a somewhat silly name. 2) People always get real fucking smug about it for some reason.

I love when a seemingly weak or one or two use power comes into play in unique ways. Like someone who's power is to simply create light and it's just a distraction blinding tool or a magic lamp and the main enemy is super duper nocturnal in his dim lair . . . suddenly sucks to have light sensitive eyes.

But yeah, if you like building a story and natural character development this can be super annoying and disruptive to story flow the same way and usually in partnership with the deus ex machina obsessed. The whole thing either doesn't move if you aren't moving to what they have planned or they unveil it in desperation to show it where their was so many plot holes.

This is something that I've come across recently but hypocrites. It's sadder when it's a friend that you know in real life.

Another case is a rp that I was in where the player explained that she had a life and family to take care of so rushing her wouldn't be appreciated. I respected that and never rushed her for any replies. She, on the other hand, rushed me minutes after she posted a reply that was a couple of paragraphs for a reply. I made the last post for our rp and would be pinged by her on discord with a message that said "Bump" even though it was her turn.

Another peeve of mine is putting forth the effort when doubling and the focus of the rp shifting to the partner's story and leaving yours in the dust. This was also done by the same partner mentioned above. This happens and the person has the gall to ask you for more plots when the basis of yours hasn't even been touched. I understand muses and inspirations change. I tell partners all the time that I do not care how long it takes for a reply as long as they are still enjoying the rp. This partner just made me feel so disrespected.

Request threads full of errors. From start to finish, pure errors. Even in the title. You can hardly understand any of it.

When it comes to realistic face claims (aka using celebs and the like), I get frustrated when I see people use certain celebs for a particular age group. Maybe it doesn't bother everyone but I'm picky when it comes to age-appropriate face claims. If they are supposed to be 28 and above, I don't want to see people like Kate Walsh and whatnot. A Bob Morley character would make sense.

Anyway, that's my peeve for the day. Carry on my.. ;)

Today what's really getting on my nerves is my lack of motivation and increasing levels of procrastination when it comes to writing. The fact that, paradoxically, my perfectionism makes me despise every little bit of writing that I produce makes everything worse, wich contributes to my downfall over a spiral of easy and fast relief and enterteainment which means videogames, help.
It's too early to hear someone putting my problems into words.

When someone comes to your request thread expecting you to make adjustments to your plot and rules for them to be comfortable.

"Oh, I see in one of your plots you were planning on playing the female character. Well, I can't play a male character so can I play the female instead?"

"You only write on site? Discord is much better for me, I'm willing to write with you if you take this to discord."

"There's no romance in this plot. Romance is a must for me so we have to do something about that."

this isn't the worst sin in the world or even a dealbreaker, but i don't like it when people have a bilingual character and when said character speaks another language, they write it as it is without any translation. like, for example;

she thought about it for a second before speaking up. "non ho capito, puo ripetere?"

and i'm left wondering what that the hell that character said. obviously i can go and translate it, but it just feels weird and throws me off? if that makes sense? i don't mind if it's short sentences now and then, but i've seen characters having full on conversations with npcs in languages i don't understand without any translation and it's kind of annoying.

especially when that language uses a different script and they write out words in that script. like, there's really no need for that and it's so out of place when everything is in the latin alphabet and boom, hangul or cyrillic out of nowhere.

personally, if my character is speaking another language and even if it's one i speak, i prefer to write it in english and do something to indicate they're speaking a foreign language (italicising or something like that). but if that's not your style, please at least leave a translation for my dumbass ansjhdhf so i'm not left confused af.

Absolutely this! And worse if it is a made-up language. Like I remember some people playing elves and all their dialogue was in some "Elvish" from an online translator that they ran their dialogue through before posting. Why do this? WHY.

Unless a word is untranslatable, like it's a cultural artifact of some kind, or doesn't have an equivalent word in the language you are writing in: write it in the same damn language.

19th Century authors liked to sprinkle French into their novels, because it was considered to be a mark of good education, but even though I understand French reasonably well, it still annoys me when a character speaks French and it isn't translated. See also: heavy references to Greek mythology with no context.
